Loved the video, beautiful scenery and I didn't even get wet. It's always a pleasure to watch you adventures. Just waiting for your next one, hopefully you'll have better weather.
Hi Bryan Wow, what a great job you did on this video . The scenery in Wind River Range, reminds me of Glacier National Park. thanks for sharing your adventures. I look forward to the next one. 🦉
El Nino has made for some strange weather patterns this year. From fires in Canada to a hurricane in the panhandle of Florida. Wouldn't expect rain in Wyoming in August. Still you managed to capture some beautiful landscapes in The Winds. Thanks for sharing, Bryan.
Oh Man! Only viewed the first 5 minutes because I'm already late to leave the house, but totally enthralled and can't wait to resume... Again, you capture the majesty like few others.
Thanks for another great video Bryan. This trip here of yours overlaps muchly with our trip planned for end-of-August '24. We did the lower Winds in late-Aug '22 (Popo Agie) including Texas Pass and the Cirque---inspired by You!! Keep on keeping on. Godspeed
Hi Bryan- great to see you back in the Winds!! You sure had some stormy weather to deal with this time! Lots of rain, wind, hail and quick drops in temperature, brr!! You're a pro at handling all that... I'm guessing you couldn't have a campfire due to elevation rules, or else the wood was just too wet. Great to see the conditions when you were able to film... it's such an amazing area and I loved seeing all the lakes, meadows, rock formations and mountains. Seems like the bugs weren't a big problem, hopefully. Even though there were quite a few people around, looks like it was pretty quiet and you had some private camp sites. I've got the Winds on my wish list ... but first I need to get my pack weight down...lol! Awesome adventure! - Jen
Thanks Jen! Yea, lots of storms. Actually there was a lot of rain all summer, although not great for backpacking, it was good for plants and reducing wildfires. For the last three or four years I've been trying to do a trip in Sawtooth Wilderness in Idaho, but couldn't because of all the wildfires and smoke. So this year I was able to get there for a five day trip and should have the video posted in a couple of weeks. You need to get your pack weight down so you can do a trip in the Winds! :)
Excellent that you got to do your trip in the Sawtooths! I hope it was great weather! I know! Steve and I just went out for a night and came to the same conclusion! We climbed 2,400’ in 2.5 miles and were pretty worn out! I’ll check out your older video with suggestions and do a little Christmas shopping! We would like to do 3-4 nights on the PCT next summer, but our packs are way too heavy. I’m great for it as far as hiking itself goes. If I get my weight down I’ll be in the Winds for sure!! @@BryanDeLay
once again beautiful captures of stunning places! The Winds do remind me of some places I visited this summer in CO, in the Indian Peaks, Ward and Nederland, CO... but seeing your journey... I'm going to have to get past CO and on up to Wyoming sooner than later!! thanks for sharing, your videos are amazing.
I did 7 days just north of where you were, starting 2 days after you finished. I didn’t see anyone for last 5 days, had blazing sun the 1st 6 days and had an absolute ball. I’ll be back again 1st chance I get.
That's great anselmocat! That's amazing you didn't see anyone for the last 5 days. There are some areas around New Fork Lakes and Green River Lakes that don't get a lot traffic once you get in a few miles from the trail heads.
Great footage as always, Bryan! Hoping for either The Winds or San Juans next year. Don't think I could go wrong but man, The Winds would be so great. Thanks for the great vid!
Well your run on great weather was about to catch up and it did with a vengeance. I was impressed at the great video and those jaw dropping views showed through. Your Winds footage never is the same and always inspires. I was wondering whn youwere going to hit it this year! Well done.👏😊
Loved this one! Love seeing you on some of the same trails that I have been on. That was quite the battle with the weather on this one! The Winds will keep things interesting!
Bryan the weather you experienced reminds of the weather I get in the Winds every time I go. Day after day of dodging lightning storms. I was curious about your original plans from summit lake back to your car. I was told that the pine creek canyon trail is unmaintained and is covered in blowdowns. This is going back a few years so maybe they have cleared it. Have you heard otherwise. I have always wanted to do that loop to avoid doubling back on Pole Creek. Thanks. Love your videos.
Thanks JJWGA! Storms in the Winds are very common, although I've been on a few trips there without any storms. I talked to an employ at the outfitter in Pinedale and was told the Pine Mountain Trail did have some blowdowns, but was doable. In fact some of his friends did the trail a few weeks before. Avoiding backtracking on Pole Creek Trail was my goal too.
I remember your comment and I responded, but for some reason It's is gone. Sometimes YT has some glitches. I've had comments show up under the bell menu, but when I try to reply the comment disappears. Anyway sorry and thanks for your second reply.
Hey Bryan.....you've obviously been busy since you got home. Great job on the editing of this video. I really enjoyed watching. Your many years of experience was showcased in this one, too. Proper prep, good decisions. Looking forward to your Sawtooth video with Coach. And then of course the Sam Billings Memorial CG and Darby, MT video! Woohoo!😉🤸♂ Hope to see you soon, Tom (Black Oak PM).
Thanks Tom! Crazy busy since I've been home. My Sawtooth video should be up in a couple of weeks. Actually I should have videoed that storm at Sam Billings Memorial CG after you left.
Thought this Winds video was about due to be dropped. Enjoyed the vicarious hike along with you. Looking forward to a few more from this year's western trip!
You're on to my schedule Dr. John! Actually I only filmed two trips this year. The other filmed trip was in Sawtooth Wilderness in Idaho, which I should have posted in a couple of weeks. Glad you enjoyed this video.
Love the Wind River range so thanks for sharing your latest adventure there. So much water... even from the sky. How do you like your rain skirt? I use mine quite a bit...light weight waterproof piece of kit.
I've been using my Enlightened Equipment rain wrap for five years or so and really like it. Even use it in the winter unless it's really a cold, wet trip, then I'll use rain pants.
I'm just checking out your beautiful trip video and noting the weather. I plan to hike out of that TH mid Sept and wanted to get a bead on what to expect from mother nature. I think I'll stick in an extra tarp that I can throw up quickly and pack some warm clothing....possibly traction. I really don't want to change my plans, but I can always look for something tamer if it snows or hails too much. : )
Thanks LMay64! Just got back from the Winds and the weather was much better than last year. Very little rain and warmer than last year. Did four trips in the Winds this year and the lowest temperature was only 36. However, two days after my last trip there was light snow in the higher elevations. Watch the long range weather forecast, it can snow any time of the year in the Winds.
After Joey told me about hiking with you and that you were from my hometown, I actually wondered this year if you'd be in the Winds while I was there. Well, it looks like we were on the trail from the same trailhead at the same time. I think you exited the same day I started, so I probably just missed crossing paths with you! I had planned to start earlier, but I waited out those storms in Pinedale. I'm glad you had a good trip, and thanks for the video.
Thanks OutsideByNature! Actually I waited out rain for two days before I started this trip and the forecast looked good for the next five days. So much for accurate forecast! If you ever see me out on the trail please say hello,
Beautiful views, crazy weather, Bryan. I had to cut a recent trip in the Weminuche short due to the same type of weather above 12,000’. I can’t do the lightning that high and exposed.
Thanks tangenttrails! I didn't mention it in the video, but just after my storm narration on the second day behind the pine tree I saw the largest bolt of lightening I've ever seen about a 1/2 mile away and then seconds later thunder so loud it hurt my ears.
Hey Bryan, beautiful scenery from your adventure, as always! You typically wear a Montbell rain jacket. I see you were using the Outdoor Vitals Tushar rain jacket on your trip. I'd be very interested in hearing your review of the Tushar and comparing it to the Montbell with pros and cons!!! I was about to purchase a Montbell Versatile, but seeing you in the Tushar made me rethink my purchase. I appreciate your thoughts.
Thanks jmash41! Actually the Montbell was just a wind jacket. I've been wearing a Outdoor Research Helium rain jacket in the summer and an old Arc'teryc jacket in the winter, which was wearing out. So I got the Tushar jacket a few months ago and really like it. I'm anxious to see how it does this winter in all day rain in the southern Appalachians. So far for the money and the weight it's a great rain jacket. The Tushar just received the 2023 Best Lightweight Backpacking Shell award from Outdoor Magazine.
The Winds are my favorite place to hike. The last time I was at the Jean Lakes a forest fire broke out near there. What happened to Joey Coconato’s channel, My Own Frontier?
The Winds are certainly my favorite place to backpack in the west. The first time I went to the Winds in 2001 we had to reroute our trip because of a fire. Just checked and My Own Frontier channel does not exist. I have no idea why he would have deleted his channel.
Yes, I've noticed that Joey is backpacking with Catherine. Also saw in the Yosemite description that Joey has created a Patreon account where he's posting videos, but I still don't understand why he would delete his UA-cam channel.
Another good one in the Winds Bryan! I've been watching you for a few years now and you've been around the sun significantly more times than the other backpackers that I watch. I'll be 59 in November, backpack a good bit and I was wondering how old you are. I only ask because you seem to be very stable (as in squatting on that rock to scoop water at the 7 minute mark). It's one thing to walk distances but bending at the knees and waist with stability is a different task as we age. You either have incredible genetics or train throughout the year or both. Would you comment and describe your exercise regime assuming you have one? Also I gather from your other vids that you live in the TN area? If so when you travel to the Winds do you do other hikes that you don't record, or have family in the area? That's a lot of travel for a 4 day hike. I'm a PA guy and spend a decent amount of time in the Winds/Tetons/Yellowstone. THX in advance!!
Thanks farbeyonddriben8173! Next week I will complete 71 laps around the sun. First I been flexible my entire life. Second I've been working out almost every day since the late 80's. Also for about 17 years I cycled with a very competitive group with lots of 75 to 100 mile bike rides. Now days I walk 2 to 4 miles with some light jogging 4 to 5 days a week and go to the gym for an hour or more 2 to 3 days a week, depending on my backpacking schedule that week. Since 2011 I've averaged between 75 to 100 nights of backpacking a year. And finally I have a short yoga routine I do 2 to 3 times a week. Yes I live in east Tennessee. My trip out west is generally 6 weeks from about Aug. 1 to around Sep 10. I drive and car camp between backpacks. Normally I'll do 3 or 4 backpacking trips while I'm out west. This year I did three trips and filmed 2 trips. The second trip I videoed was in Sawtooth Wilderness in Idaho, which I should have posted in a couple of weeks. Hopefully I've answered all your questions. If not let me know.
Since I hadn't seen a video from you lately, and then I realised it was that Wyoming time of year again. I always enjoy trip to the Wind River. I think I noticed the rain coat before, but forgot to ask, where'd you get it?
Hey Bryan, got a trip planned in the winds , late September. Was wondering if hammocks would be a problem? Been watching for a long time, learned a lot from you and enjoy your videos!!
Thank you very much! Hammocks would work in lower elevations, but sub-alpine and alpine areas hammocks would not be possible. So you would have to plan your campsites accordingly.
It wouldn't be August in the Winds without Bryan!
Thanks Gregg!
Loved the video, beautiful scenery and I didn't even get wet. It's always a pleasure to watch you adventures. Just waiting for your next one, hopefully you'll have better weather.
Thank you laurenmartin682! No hail in the next one, but still had some thunderstorms. The weather was wild in the west this year.
