What a great trip. When I was about 12 my friend and his family took me backpacking and we went into a little sandy side. I would like see you hike into the little sandy lake and go up towards the circle towers that way
Thanks David! I've never hiked out of Little Sandy Lake. According to the map I have it would be off-trail up Little Sandy Creek and then over a pass and drop down to Temple Lake where you can pick up an official trail down to Big Sandy Lake. Maybe I'll look into that sometime.

Thanks Carl! After this trip I did two more trips in the Winds, a solo 3 nighter and a 1 nighter with Catherine, but did not film those trips. We had another trip planned for the Winds but got smoked out. Catherine went to Washington state and I went to Cloud Peak Wilderness in the Big Horn Mountains, which will be my next video.

Awesome! I just got back from the Wind River Range. I went back this weekend and was supposed to do the Cirque of the Towers but the trail is covered in down trees and I'm recovering from an injury so it felt like I was pushing it a bit climbing over and jumping off repeatedly. Anyway, thanks for your take on the trail!

The quality of you videography is outstanding and and has inspired me to return to the Winds these last four years. . The week prior to your trip I made the exact same mistake on my way to the East River. I was totally befuddled when I arrived at the sign for Pyramid Lake. I did however backtrack. The 'unofficial trail' is more a series of elk paths with a couple of pinch points where the canyon tightens. However the scenery of the East Lakes basin is some of the more stunning and remote I have found in the Winds. Saw no one for two days. The off trail back to Pyramid Lake was easier than I supposed. I coupled it with a loop over Hailey and Washakie passes. I urge you to gibe the East River another go. Its worth it.

If we had just continued on the CDT to the East River I think we would have realized what was going on. The topos up to Pyramid Lake looked pretty easy on the map. This may be the best video you've ever posted, imo, and I've watched almost all of them. The Winds are magnificent and you captured that remarkably well. What I was impressed with was the clarity of the video, the intensity of the colors and the slower pace. The slower, less rushed pace, made this video very enjoyable to watch. So did the selection of music and the placement of it. The camera work was excellent and the added technical features made it special. Great video. Thanks.

Brian great trail planning. I just finished my first backpacking trip to Island Lake. It was the day after the Labor Day storm so the trail was covered in trees so I did not make it to Titcomb basin. Going back next year and was wondering which of the other WRR trails you like best. I’d like to do two or three trips in the Range next September.

Thanks maryjbelle! I've been using a tarp since 1998 and like the space and being able to see out during rain when I'm stuck under the tarp for hours. Also it's much lighter than most tents. My current DCF tarp only weighs about 20 ounces including cords, stakes and stuff sack.
Did a hike in the winds last summer and the elevation was an issue for me. How do you stay acclimated when you dont live at that altitude? I want to go back next summer.
Yea, the elevation can be an issue. I will car camp for 2 or 3 days at 7,000 feet to help get acclimated. Even then the first trip can be challenging. By the 2nd and 3rd trip it's not as much of an issue.
Stupid question- how did you manage the shot at about 1:39? The camera tracks with you and cat going up a bend in the trail. Do you have one of those sliding rail things? ( I have a sophisticated understanding of camera equipment as you can tell.) But I like how you move the camera in your videos. The shot I mention was well timed too.
Thanks for watching Ms. Anne! Actually it's a very good question. The camera is actually stationary. The appearance of the camera tracking us walking is done with editing software using a pan & zoom function.
The Winds are amazing and you should certainly go sometime. Actually for the last seven years I've spent the entire month of August backpacking in the Winds. The bugs were not bad on this trip. They can be bad in July, but normally start dying off in August.
@@BryanDeLay Titcomb basin looks great as well. Question for you. I'm a hammock camper - are there decent trees to hang from in the lower areas? Looked pretty decent where you were camping. Obviously no trees in the higher areas, but likely wouldn't be camping there anyways.
I’m surprised you don’t carry a phone that enables you to check your current location on a map. My device allowed me to turn around several times soon after i took a wrong turn on the trail.
Michael, both Catherine and I have phones with GPS apps, but you have to download the map for it to be effective. We had no phone service the day we left and we both forgot to download the map the day before when we did have phone service.

I used a mosquito on the first night only. The bugs were not that bad on this trip. My tarp is a Mountain Laurel Design Trail Star DCF fabric.

Love both these hikers’ videos! Q- why the tarp/fly instead of a tent ⛺️ ? Weight or preference? That is hard core purist.
