Crawler Gears Off Road - Do They Help? Twin Transfer Case Hilux - 205:1 Final Drive Ratio

- Does a low crawl ratio help off road? Well in true LROR style we give you the answer without expert commentary mixed with a whole lot of baloney! We just put it to the test and you can see for yourself.
I had the pleasure of getting behind the wheel on some obstacles and it was fantastic to drive. Eventhough the KM2 tyres where near the end of their life and on the bald side the Hilux just found traction thanks to the slow rotation of the tyres and the down low torque thanks to the gearing.
The Toyota Hilux RN105 has a standard ratio Trail Gear transfer case in the front and a 4.7:1 transfer case behind it with 4.88 diff gears. It also has a Drivetech front disconnect with the front diff pushed forward 35mm. Trail Gear high steer setup with 2 inch lift rolling on 37 inch BFG KM2 tyres. It's twin locked with ARB air lockers.

Holy cow that is amazing. Just point it fricken anywhere!
Yeah pretty much 👊
I have never seen a Hilux that can crawl like that. Those tyres were worn and often wet and it still did fantastic. You would think the load bed overhang would get in the way, but it doesn't. Dropping off rocks downhill might be different though. Very impressive.
It wasn't bothered and found traction regardless. Yeah drop offs might take a hit but being almost slow motion shouldn't be an issue. Thanks for dropping us a comment 👍
nice... running a 1st gear is 3.68:1, 6.5:1 Tcase, 7.17 gears on 43" stickies. My math has me at approx. 175:1
.....and not done at 8000rpm but 800rpm
100% correct
I can scarely believe it. I keep thinking maybe that's just an easy course that looks rough. Makes we wonder why every rig I see struggling in the rocks doesn't have gearing like this.
Actually decent trails that many of us have struggled on. Have a look for some of our videos at Suzuki Hill Menai, and Waterfall Track Menai for a comparison of other rigs doing these tracks.
Question: Is it worth getting lockers on a Jeep Wrangler (not a rubicon) ?
Definitely
Fantastic vid. Thanks for taking the time to film and post. Could watch slow rock crawling all day.
Glad you liked it, im also a big fan of slow crawling 👍
My God...can anything stop it?
Put some sticky tyres on and not much would stop it.
Absolute monster amazing!!!. This bloke needs a rig rundown..he can't get away with this haha
Haha stay tunned planning on it 👍
Just a reminder we still need this !

@@lror Still waiting !
That’s incredible what those trucks are capable off...👏🏾👍🤗
I’m doing the same with my Defender, however on a different scale (rc scale crawler)
That’s so much fun to watch you guys, thanks for sharing 👌
🍻🍻🍻🍻
You're welcome man, glad you enjoyed it. Good luck with the tiny truck build 👍
Ok I need instuctions how to do it . I'll buy hilux and... what next... come on it can't stay like this 🙃
Haha let us know when you get the hilux
Marlin Crawler in the USA does adapters and boxes for toyotas
@@cliffordreed6429 yep but this is all from trail gear
That's how 4x4ing should be done
He's set the bar high for the rest of us.
Unstoppable !!
Best crawling video.
Not to forget driver excellence !
Thanks mate
hell yea! i have an old toyota pickup with the 4.7 gears and a crawl box! slow and steady unstoppable!
Just gives so much traction and control 👌
now are you getting an additional transfer case for the landy
It would be awesome. Till then one can dream.
We are waiting to see this monster again in other videos, side by side with all you friends crawlers....
How can I modify my vehicle f250 1991 with these crawl things?
I have seen 4x4 vehicles with insane 580:1 crawl ratios. But I suspect that such crawl ratio is excessive and has very limited uses. What's the most practical crawl ratio?
driver has the full control, maximum pleasure.
May as well just go out and buy a 4WD Tractor . I mean how far does one have to go !
😂
Looks cool...but how does going this slow make a rig more capable vs a 100:1 crawl ratio? If anything it looks to remove all momentum and wheel speed that is many times needed. Thoughts?
100:1 is very low as well and would need reduction gears to achieve that considering most factory low range ratios are around 40:1. Even the Rubicons (jk) are 65:1 and are considered low.
The advantage of twin sticks is he can run on a single tc when more speed is needed and has 4 ratios to choose from as opposed to reduction gears with only 2.
@@lror OK...my stock wrangler JLU 6 speed has a 84:1 crawl ratio and I'm going to regear the diffs to 5.13 making the crawl ratio 105:1. Why would you need any deeper? How does a 205:1 crawl ratio actually make a rig more capable?
Yeah the JL has a much lower 1st gear. You probably dont NEED lower than 80 let alone 100 but man that 205:1 is just cool 😎👍
Static friction is greater than dynamic friction, as my dad used to say. Airing down the tires is critical.
Great Great challenge!! Thanks for sharing this!
Welcome buddy, we had a great time out there 👍
What ratio is the trail gear case
Crawler gears are great. You can drive much more smoothly and with much more power. Unfortunately only had them at my Disco 2 for 1 year. Due to the poor and inadequate assembly of my garage, my high / low transfer box with the crawler gears broke down much too soon.
Thanks for the beautiful video.
I had 49% reductions in my disco but this is next level.
@@lror what’s more than the -49% for LT230 ?
Thats max for of the shelf gears. You could add an underdrive unit via the pto and have another set of Low Low range gears. Very rare and hard to find though.
Awesome, nice drive!!! Man strap a lawnmower and trimmer in the back on the next rock run🤣
Haha yeah to get the camp site trimmed 🤣
I'm all about the slow toyotas!
So good thanks mate

a note about your description, typically the 4.7 is in the rear case and the stock 2.7 in the crawl box, due to torque multiplication reasons, not that it cant be done. i also have a twin stick(2wd-4wd) and rear disconnect.
Yes mate 4.7 the rear transfer
I've adjusted the description. Thank you for pointing that out 👍🍻
Crazy car climbing LOL
Control baby ❤
Indeed with so much time to adjust.
@@lror make more video 🙏
Where can I buy this reduction ? Many thanks
What track are you guys on - looks great!
Suzuki Hill and Waterfall Track in Menai.
What a weapon
👊
What tires are you running? What brand and what size? Also, what pressure do you run?
They are 37inch bfg km2 on 8psi. They are pretty worn though.
@@lror because they're so worn and BF Goodrich are only a 36.5 brand-new probably now at actual 36 or a 35.5
@@philfoote829 haha yeah bf's are mostly undersized
