Hi John, nice to hear you're feeling better, I really missed your videos. Now things are moving forward again. Hopefully you can get this problem under control. The rover is a fantastic vehicle . Many greetings Udo. I am waiting for spring.
Glad you are feeling better. I hope you can eventually help the community settle on a definitive answer/approach to the ongoing upper shock mount misery. I’m personally not sold on the spring clocking hypothesis but would love to see it either proven or disproved. My last set (Welsh) started failing pretty rapidly and then melted so I need to deal with this again this spring.
Hi John, that movement on the shock is a bit of a surprise, but you may well be into something with the direction of the spring tail. If I could get my wheels off, I would tell you where mine face buddy. Let's hope the landy is just a glitch and not a costly repair. They do like to throw a code once in a while, its just to keep you on your toes, mate 😂
Hi John, my car is 2001 XK8 convertible with 70k kilometres on the odometer, Canadian car. My front shock mounts are original. I checked the clocking of the springs on both sides and I can confirm that the tail of the spring faces directly at me as I am looking through the wheel arch towards the engine. Basically, the tail resides at the highest-most point of the slanted strut tower. I am not sure if this would make a difference when it comes to the shock absorber rod sliding sideways, but it may be worth a try to reposition the tails and see how it goes. Cheers!
Steve glad u are on the mend I got Tate s collars to replace in the next few months he does these with passion and not as a business I truly fine sit force veteran
I checked the upper spring end location, on both side it is located on the outside toward the fender. the right side is generally pointed to the rearword mounting bolt and the bolt is marked with a pink paint on top. The left side spring end is generally pointed at the forward bolt and that bolt is also marked in pink paint. Not sure if it means anything. I took photos of the area, but can.t seem to see how to post them here.
Baxtor here John, l offered you a solution to the mount issue free of charge via another of your videos at one stage. The offer still stands if you wish to deal with that problem once and for all. If you want to clock springs it won't hurt but it certainly won't fix a poor quality mount
Hi Baxtor👍 Thanks, I remember your very kind offer. And thanks once again for this one.I have already been provided with some alternate mounts to try out and am currently giving them a go. If you would like me to share your details in a future video, it would be a pleasure. Send me a picture of yourself with your mounts, Your price, Cost of delivery for U.S. and Europe and an email address that you would like folks to contact you on. Send them to john@tothegarage.co.uk Thanks my friend Finest regards John
Your details are not in the video that comes out tonight. (as that video was made over a week ago, but i will put them in the next one on this topic which will be quite soon👍
Glad that you're getting better John. I think that yoiur analysis of the top damper mounts is correct and it's the first time i've heard this theory for this age-old problem. Interested to see how this works out as I've yet to get started on the suspension upgrades on my car.
I had exactly the same problem as you John and has the original mounts rebuilt by Baxtor (Steve) here in Australia. I have had no discernable change to the handling or harshness with these. Also, I don't believe that the positions of the spring tails will make such a difference with this tougher material. Disappointingly, Jaguar don't seem to provide any information about clocking the springs in their manuals. If it is critical, it would have saved lots of teeth gnashing over this issue. Great to have you back by the way John!
I replaced the top mounts 2 years ago. Removed some EURO mounts and replaced with the same type. One started to move out of center almost straight away, the other remained centered. My springs have two yellow paint lines down them, the ends of the springs are located between the yellow lines. Then I read about clocking, the one that remained centered was clocked both ends out and the one that moved the spring ends were facing forward. I now have new coil tops from Peter Hobman and when I get around to installing them they will be clocked spring ends out.
That seems to support John's theory. Very interesting. Someone on the main USA X100 forum had the same problem a few weeks ago and I suggested that they must have installed something incorrectly but I did not know what. It sounds as if I was, in essence, correct but if no reference is made to the correct mounting position in the manual then you can't blame anyone for getting it wrong. Richard
Hi Robert. I have also heard nothing but good things about Peter Hobmans mounts, so so with the combo of those and spring ends out, I would imagine you will have a very sound setup👍🤞
@@ToTheGarage Looks like you will be doing the same installation as me. I am just waiting for warmer weather to complete the installation. Probably in April.
Sorry you had the flu no fun for sure when it gets very cold here my tire pressure warning light comes on when it gets warm it goes away and the tire pressure are always correct maybe your having the same issue John I look forward to seeing your solution for the Jags top mount and coil spring tail take care Andy Allen.
You will probably need the rebuilt shock mounts from Baxtor on the Jag Forums. I'm going to do what you did though and go with the URO mounts but I'm going to see if I can buy a kit from Baxtor in the mean time so if the URO mounts fail I will get them replaced with some much better mounts.
Hi ✋. Sorry but no. I was very upfront with everyone that these are. strictly limited edition. Each is individually numbered and when they are gone they are gone. Sorry to dissapoint though. Thanks for watching👍
Hello John, I recently have a problem with my Super V8 (2000 build) auxiliary belt, it keeps flipping off, my mechanic doesn't know how to fix it, U have any tips. Greetings!
Could be a collapsed bearing in the idler or tensioner pulley throwing it out of alignment. Or it could be an incorrect belt There are two different ones dependent on year and model and the RIbs are different. Occassionally you find the wrong Idler pulley or tensioner pulley has been installed following a bearing issue. Some are plastic some are metal and they are diifferent shapes

I have an O4 model, with low mileage. The rubber is turning to dust. I will check on the spring location tomorrow.

@@richardsutton01 It would be interesting if drivers with struts that are original would inspect them and note if they are "clocked"

Force, not pressure. Wayne Tate has some strong opinions on these mounts and spring clocking. If you like I will email you his contact info.
