I JUST bought this game last night at a tabletop store I like to go to and introduced it to my friend who was there with me since i had played a teaching game at another store some months ago..we had a few hiccups figuring out the whole "Starting Square" thing but it only took 2 games to figure it out. My friend really likes the game cause it's quick and he said it's like a simpler game of chess. I used to get my friends together for game night but it's gotten harder to get them all together recently due to work or other obligations we all have...so a good two player game for when I can only get one friend over, and it being a pretty portable game since the box is magnetic closing, helps make it a good game to introduce people to tabletop games with. I'm going to try a variant set of rules until I can get the expansions. The only change is that if we do another game, the five move cards used the first time round are left out of the draw for the next game so that we don't have too many repeats due to bad shuffles.
I recently found a video game called Pawnbarian that feels very similar to this (aside from not being a physical board game). Awesome video, I will likely be getting this game.
The rules state that you are then forced to forfeit your movement, but you still exchange a card with the center. But this should be VERY rare since you'd need to have specific placement of all your pawns on the board and then only the movement cards corresponding to that exact placement.
Yup, exactly. You'll do nothing and trade a card anyways. I've never had this happen yet though! Would require a pretty exact scenario, or only having 1 piece left on the board.
Thank you for such a clear intro! What happens if you get to the other side and haven’t achieved the objectives of stream or stone? Do they move backwards, or turn around and play that way?
Thanks for checking it out! As for the long sleeves (with shorts I might add), I cannot say. Strange fashion choice? Abnormal amounts of arm hair? We may never know.
The blaqck squares represent the current position of one of your pieces, and the other coloured squares represent the legal places for them to move too, as long as they don't take you off the board or onto one of your own pieces.
Thanks for this review! Nice overview for a great game. Also, it seems to be getting more wide spread acclaim. Saw it the other day in Barnes and Noble.
I'm not sure I quite understand your question. What rule are you thinking prevents you from moving. If I understand that better, I might be able to answer your question.
@@WatchItPlayed So the cards have backwards spaces. When you start, you start as far back as you can go. There are no back spaces so how do you get out on the board so the cards can be used? Looks like I should just ignore those back spaces at the start? I just would like to see the first move of the game after that, I'm good.
+Pep MacDonald that seems to be the nice thing about this game, you have 4-5 moves to look at each round. Seems easier as chess at first, but given that every figure can do the same moves and that the move rotation can be used strategically, it should have a lot more strategic potential
I'm now not sure if this is how Watch It Played requires instructors to deliver the goods, or if this instructor is mimicking Rodney Smith. Right down to the "thanks for watching" hand wave. Kind of puts a sour taste in my mouth.
On one level we didn't want to break our format, but also Pep was getting started around here, and it takes time to find the groove when creating tutorial videos. I look back at my first videos and know that I evolved as well as I went. It all takes time - gotta start somewhere :)
Is this the shortest tutorial ever?! What a streamlined game!
Definitely one of the shorter ones!
Great, simple video. Watch It Played, Rodney or Pep, never disappoint.
I'm happy to hear that! Big thanks for watching the show!
Ordering this, looks simple, fun and addictive - thanks.
+MrKnightlore Hope you have a great time with it!
It's sooo fun... hope you enjoyed it.
This game is awesome!! Super simple to play and can be quite challenging at times. I have all the expansions. Light and Shadow is really good.
Glad you've been enjoying!
Very clear and concise, excellent!
Congratulations on being super clear, comprehensive, and concise!
Thanks Lynn!

Best Pep Macdonald video to date, great work and thank you.
Thanks for that! Glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks, Pep! This looks like a great game to play at lunch with co-workers! =o)
Glad you enjoyed it!

I hope you have a great time playing!
Thank you guys for what you do!
Great, clear overview. Thank you. Off to play!
Have fun!
Great tutorial, mate!
Thank so much!
You regularly mention using the cards to move pawns, not masters. There's no difference between pawn movement and master movement, right?
Correct!
Thanks for that. Looks like fun. I'll have a go!!!
Hope you enjoy Patrick!
Nice!is like a very simple version of a"chest like"game.
This seems to be a great 2 player game.
You end up trying this one Gil?
Is it ever possible for there to be no valid moves (all options lead off the board or onto a friendly pawn)? If so, how do you deal with this?
The rules state that you are then forced to forfeit your movement, but you still exchange a card with the center. But this should be VERY rare since you'd need to have specific placement of all your pawns on the board and then only the movement cards corresponding to that exact placement.

Thanks to Dean for the assist!
Great presentation Pep!
Thanks for the kind words Ray!
freaking awesome.. this is cool... simple but epic.. nice game to bet with mountain dew.
Glad you enjoyed it! Mountain dew would be good. I'm more of a Dr. Pepper man myself. ;)
ooohhh... i'll try that someday if i can find it on our local stores here in the philippines.
Cool I just got this game
Hope the instructional is a help to you. Thanks for watching!
Well this game is very simple, but I'm always happy to see that other people play the same games I do
Thank you for such a clear intro! What happens if you get to the other side and haven’t achieved the objectives of stream or stone?
Do they move backwards, or turn around and play that way?
They don't turn around, you just continue to play as before, using the movement cards exactly as you had been previously. Know what I mean?
Some of the mvement cards let you move backwards.
Thanks!
You're very welcome!
I have a question, why is this game so awesome
Ha! Glad you like it!
I noticed that some of the grey squares on the movement cards were different colors. do those signify anything. the colors are blue green and red
They have no particular impact on game play.
Great simple/difficult game! Thx.
And what's with the long sleeves? Tattoos?😁
Thanks for checking it out! As for the long sleeves (with shorts I might add), I cannot say. Strange fashion choice? Abnormal amounts of arm hair? We may never know.
+Pep MacDonald anyhoe: Nice that u joined the WiP-show!
Thanks! I've really been enjoying it (though it's hard work at times) and I'm glad to have your support!
Similar to Swords & Strongholds. I'll have to see if my local store has this one.
Glad you liked it!
how many movement cards come with the game ?
16
How many movement cards are there?
Sixteen, I believe.
Reminds me of Ploy if you used dice. Nifty!
Haven't played that one!
the black spots are on the center so do the pawn start in center then move on a grey spot or can the black spot be anywhere on the board
+Joey Dominguez It can be anywhere.
Watch It Played well that cool

+LordElfiian Glad you enjoyed the video! Yep, the game is getting picked up in lots of locations now.
Can you capture your opponent master if they are still in there starting spot?
Yes.
I get this game tomorrow
Now you'll be able to pop it right out of the box and play! Enjoy!
OMG that smile, so much teeth!!! :P
The better to teach games with my dear! -Little Red WIP Hood
Thanks Pep, nice and quick game though.
Glad you enjoyed it!
How do you make the first move since the players all start next to the master?
I'm not sure I quite understand your question. What rule are you thinking prevents you from moving. If I understand that better, I might be able to answer your question.

@@stutzceo I think you'll find this question answered here in the video: ua-cam.com/video/IFRewjcngwU/v-deo.html - hope that helps!
About how long does each game last, Pep.
Barring player AP, should be similar to Hive or Duke. About 15-30 minutes?
Annemarie has it about right. I'd say the average game is 15-30 minutes. Can be much quicker too though.
Thanks from Mariya
You're very welcome!
Looks like a nice abstract game. Simple to learn, hard to master?
Thanks for watching! I'll have to admit, I've only won the game once. I tend to miss the places where my opponent can capture me from.
+Pep MacDonald that seems to be the nice thing about this game, you have 4-5 moves to look at each round. Seems easier as chess at first, but given that every figure can do the same moves and that the move rotation can be used strategically, it should have a lot more strategic potential
Can someone do a spoiler-free playthrough?
Not sure what you mean.
@@WatchItPlayed Nah, just making a dumb joke. 😆 game looks like fun.
Cool
Like.
I like that you like.
is it me or does the table look like it is bowing in the middle? Maybe just an optical illusion.
Effect of the camera, and a bowing issue. Getting a new table for the show, actually.
+Watch It Played Gotcha! All the years of leaning ;)
