Being that this came out after cvsnk2 I wonder why they didn't just copy and paste more sprites? They already used DS and red earth sprites, they should've just went all out copy and pastes.
One refined and balanced fighting system with a huge roster of Capcom characters from different franchises would have worked! Also, an updated art style with vibrant backgrounds celebrating the history of Capcom should have been present! The finished product was such a huge letdown.
I was wondering to myself why they didnt make a capcom vs capcom fighting game, and this is why. Shame, really. Would loved to have seen a bigger roster with some cleaned up sprites. this could have been a huge game if they put the effort into it
It's a good idea but the character roster in this one is too random. It seems like they should have made Darkstalkers vs. Red Earth. That would of been more coherent and cooler.
If they where just going to Port over Sprites, then they should have just gone big. They should have thrown out the idea of Balance and just let us have fun. MvC 2 has no real Balance and its considered one of the best they have made. The Competitive Scene would have just adapted if it became Popular enough for it. Sad they never really gave this another shot.
If those of you want a good capcom fighting game, play the mugen project capcom universe nexus of heroes that my friends is what capcom fighting evolution should’ve been 😤
I actually enjoyed Figjting Jam at the time. To put things in correct context we'd been absolutely starved of 2D fighters outside of KIF when thus game came out. It was also 1st time Red Earth Caracters playable on home console outside of Tessa
12:38 If you look carefully, Zangief and Ingrid have newly-drawn sprites for this game. Honestly, I wished the CVS2 versions of Chun-Li and Yun get ported over and have some new attack animations if possible.
Capcom should rework with all the characters making they follow a specific pattern, not mixed them together like any child could do using Mugen in the computer. They did a excellent good job with Ingrid, but that was it, with Zangief, I think they changed the face of character when he is in the standing position, and this is it. This game was released in a time that many fighting games comunities online considered Capcom incredibly lazy with their games, especially the fighting titles. Meanwhile SNK released the SNK Battle Coliseum, which put Capcom Fighting Evolution to shame. What a disapointing way to end an era of 2D fighting games Capcom.
Zangief's sprite is actually the one from Alpha, but with a redrawn face and a color palette more reminiscent of what you could see in Street Fighter 3
Street Fighter 1 characters were also going to be included in the game being these Eagle using his CVS2 sprite, Sagat using a redrawn version of his SF2 sprite like what they did with the characters in CVS2 and Retsu, entirely redrawn for this game, but if i recall correctly they were cut because they ran out of time (you can search their sprites, they were posted at some point in a Street Fighter 5 official page) it seems that the fourth one is unknown And I have said this in other videos about the game but the characters' sprites got retouched, the most notably ones being Demitri who looks taller (as he should've been since the start) and Zangief who reuses his Alpha sprite but they also redrew his face. The rest of characters including the two ones i said change slightly or more notably their color palette for some reason, and for the Street Fighter 2 characters they either reused the Capcom vs SNK 2 resprites (Ryu, Bison, Akuma) or used the Alpha sprites (Zangief, Guile)
It's wild how Fighting Evolution was born from the ashes of Fighting All-Stars... which in turn, was born from the ashes of what would have been Capcom vs. SNK 3. After the release of CvS 2, Capcom reportedly reached out to SNK about doing a third installment. At the time, however, SNK had gone bankrupt and that crossover wasn't gonna be happening any time soon.
As a big Capcom fan I was excited when I got this game for Christmas. I was hoping my younger brother would play the game against me, but he was not interested. While it is not the best game, I was happy to finally play Red Earth characters.
I remember getting this during my Hey day of playing Capcom and SNK fighters including with local competitions. Capcom was literally on a roll before this came out, so I ended up putting a lot of faith in this title. The biggest issue I had was balance, but not simply in the way most publications would write them in as. If you wanted to lose, you generally picked a Street Fighter 3 or Red Earth character, because they are based on a system of many more frames of animation versus characters that have like 2-3 frame attacks. How do you parry that? Answer. You don't. You have to guess before the move even starts. When your amount of frames between startup and the hotbox is so incredibly low compared to what they are facing, the pure advantage is real. I see this as the biggest flaw in their idea to grab the same exact sprites, from their respective games, and honoring the same hit box timing from them. If they had redrawn the characters so they were compatible, then this would've worked way better, but that would've required work, and I guess work they weren't going to do at the time.
Capcom Fighting Jam isn't a real evolution...they could have brought Kyosuke of Rival Schools in 2D like in CVS2...they could have brought Jill Valentine of Resident evil like in Marvel versus Capcom...They could have brought far more than they did. Playing CFJ on PS2 was still fun though.
Remember, this game had a tiny budget and less than a year to complete, and was lead by an inexperienced developer at the time. A larger roster with original sprites simply wouldn't be possible, there was no saving this project.
well this game was a disappointing but i dont think it deserves the hate it got . had a ton potential but ultimately its for the die hard fighting game fans
Fighting Evolution is a good idea, but so poorly executed. Even something as simple as the roster could have easily been fixed. First off, over half the roster is street fighter characters. 12 of the 21 come from street fighter, granted their different Street Fighter games. Leaving only 9 characters for Dark Stalkers and Red Earth. Darkstalkers is a relatively obvious choice. Red Earth, at least today, seems like a somewhat deep cut. A lot more could have been done, they could have included other franchises like Rival Schools, Power Stone, Resident Evil, Megaman, or Final Fight. Capcom has the characters, even if you kept the sections small like they are,4 per series, that could have been a decently sized and varies roster.
The big Double "C" has graced us with "CAPCOM v SNK", "CAPCOM v MARVEL", "CAPCOM v TEKKEN" but not THE versus we actually still want 30yrs later in "STREET FIGHTER v MK". Another more possible one could be a combination of"STREET FIGHTER v SNK v TEKKEN v MARVEL: BECAUSE WHY THE F**K NOT!?".
I love Darkstalkers so liked being able to play with my favorite characters and fight my favorite Street Fighter characters..it wasn’t the greatest but I like.
Really did enjoy this video and found it interesting. Only thing I found jaring is you Big Daddy TopHat saying "evolution". It's actually pronounced "Eevolution". Too many people here in the UK miss-pronounce this word.
This was Capcom's attempt at doing a King Of Fighters which was successfully done by SNK with combining characters from different games in to a new series not only was Capcom late to this party they executed it poorly although SNK's new attempt at this formula with Neo Geo Battle coliseum bombed as well
NGBC should've had two games: One still called *NEO•GEO Battle Coliseum* centered on fighting where characters from Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, KOF, Burning Fight, King of the Monsters, etc are playable. An upgraded version called *NEO•GEO Battle Coliseum: ALPHA* where the ADK fighters from World Heroes, Dark Kombat, Twinkle Star Sprites, Ninja Masters, Ninja Combat and Ninja Commando show up. And a prequel called *NEO•GEO Swordclash Coliseum* where the roster is packed with characters from Samurai Shodown, The Last Blade, Sengoku Denshou, Fu'un, etc.
@@KenMasters. Maybe a third: Neo Geo Super Heroes - A game based on their non-FG, non-brawler roster such as Metal Slug, King of the Monsters, Twinkle Star Sprites, Magician Lord, etc. Magic, superpowers, cartoon physics, and more marvel-style gameplay.
@@austinreed7343 Oh, the non-fighters of SNK would basically be the unlockables in both Coliseum games, much like in KOF XI. It wouldn't be as fun without the fighting game characters on the roster. Nice timing. This game popped into my mind the other day after literally forgetting about it for years. Such a trash game from a great company in a great era. Literally played it maybe 2 or 3 times with my friends in the arcade and all of us were like "nah, why bother when we have Marvel, Alpha, KOF, etc. right here?" I didn't even pirate CFJ when I had the chance.
Talk about a game with ridiculous amounts of potential (even though it was going to be unbalanced as all hell) and dropping the ball COMPLETELY. The concept was awesome, gather fighters from 5 different Capcom series (Street Fighter II, Street Fighter III, Street Fighter Alpha, Darkstalkers and Red Earth) that will play with that specific fighting system and just duke it out in one all out brawl. Street Fighter III's Alex against Darkstalkers Anakaris? Street Fighter II's Bison against Red Earth's Hydron? SWEET! What went wrong? Easy, the game feels like a demo. It is INCREDIBLY barebones as there are only 4 character's per fighting game with 2 hidden character's which are unlockable (Pyron and Akuma), and an all new character named Ingrid. In total it's only 23 fighters. Why is the roster SO small??? It's missing an insane amount of characters that could have been put in instead of being regulated to background cameos. The game was going to be unbalanced anyway, they may as well have went all out with it. Also the only modes in it are Arcade and Vs. That's it. Such a wasted opportunity. What makes it even worse is that the fighting was really ON POINT as it is VERY crisp, tight and responsive while the all new levels and soundtrack (REALLY like the soundtrack to this one) are very good. Evolution? Not even close unfortunately.
Please do videos on mortal kombat 3 (& UMK3), Tekken 2, DOA2, & Soul Calibur 3. As well as videos on SNK's World Heroes Series, the Godzilla fighting games, the Blazblue series, Primal Rage, Mace The Dark Age, Sonic The Fighters, & Pokken Tournament

This game could been way better... but it just became official Mugen Capom game... I mean no tag team? or able mix or fuse style types at least as a optional mode?
Lack of characters, a previously cancelled game little effort pushed by Capcom would doom the companies fighting game franchise for some time til SF4. This game could've been great had its earlier issues been properly addressed!
I didnt understand why Pyron was the last boss when Jedah was in the game and he was the last boss of Darkstalkers III. Making Pyron the last boss made no sense if Jedah is in the game. If Jedah isnt the final boss than just make Shin Akuma the final boss then and not a secret boss.
The cancellation of Capcom fighting all stars and fans main complaint how “it’s a 3D fighting game and we hate it” is sometimes prove that you shouldn’t listen to the fans all the time especially since Capcom fighting all stars went through different phases such as being a third CVS game and having little budget left to spend which explains why Capcom fighting evolution was a rushed job. I think this is similar to SF3 in how fans try to washed out the original reaction to the game and pretend how everyone loved it back in the day
It always annoys me when Capcom does a crossover fighting game and it's pretty much just X vs Street Fighter. Even SNK vs Capcom 2 had, I think, 3 fighters that weren't from a Street Fighter game at the time (Maki, Morrigan, and Kyosuke) and even Maki eventually made it into a Street Fighter game.
This game could have been better if they included more backgrounds from multiple series, air combo system from marvel be capcom and more characters. Would have been a classic.
I'm still wondering why the hell did they changed Guy's head and Zangief idle animation Zero Sprites as they looked terrible. Same goes to Urien his animation was changed a bit
I remember buying this game on release and how mad I was for buying it when I got home. I was so excited. Even bought the controller made for it. Which was trash on day 1! I saved for so long just to waste it on this game. 😂😂
The fact that Capcom actually ruined some sprites (by changing some pointless details) and also the fact that this game clearly wasn't tested enough (having weird bugs like those juggles only some SF3 chars have)... this game was a complete disaster. If someone says this game was rock solid, he is either: -A liar. -Blind.
If they wouldve at least put 6 per game and had boss for each series if they woldve done 8 since it was a sad copying and paste work especially the red earth crew couldve really made a big diffrence
Just to point out a mistake on the video. You can switch character, or not, when winning and losing. So most of the time, you choose 2 characters but only play one…wich is worse than standard kof style system if you ask me ! (But no one is xD)
Why drop a nearly finished 3D game with several original ideas, then spend the remaining time rushing a entirely different 2D game with almost no additions whatsoever, is truly a concept I can never understand from old Capcom. It's also a shame no one of the original employees is able to ever speak about what really happenned to it...
I owned this game. Wildl unbalanced and terrible graphics. It's a fun game to play around with if you don't take fighting games seriously. And honestly for a long long time non-serious silly fighting games were a lot of what I played.
It's a shame that I still have a copy of this game. I had planned to leave it out front on the curb on a rainy day to see if anyone would pick it up. 😋
The biggest disappointment was that they never made a sequel. Fighting game series rarely get everything right on the 1st try. It seems like they just left this concept for dead instead of making improvements.
Well in my country sf3rd strike was really very very rare… you could only play as import game…. So I bought this game and I was super happy to investigate the parry feeling! Me and my friends played this a lot - so for us it was a great game until we had finally sf3rd strike! Since then I only play 3rd strike and imo even sf6 is super shitty compared to any classic street fighter !
What a depressing and wasted opportunity. Imagine a capcom fighting game composed of characters from different Capcom's IPs. If we never get a Capcom all stars fighter than Capcom really is disappointing in terms of fighting games. SF isn't enough. They could do much more other fighting games. Capcom doesn't need Marvel. Capcom has a lot of ips to use or revive.
This figures I only have like one or two Capcom fighting games like that and I get one that sucks like Capcom fighting evolution. Although before I had maybe the only one that was ever worse than that in Street fighter EX3

Being that this came out after cvsnk2 I wonder why they didn't just copy and paste more sprites? They already used DS and red earth sprites, they should've just went all out copy and pastes.
@@KKHell You do obviously if you took the time to comment 😏
Thanks for including Akuma and Morrigan. Fight on!
I was so hyped for this game and I actually bought it when it was new. I was very disappointed in it.
There was one planned at one point and they even trademarked a possible name for it but nothing ever came of it.
Mugen 😐
My only beef with the game is that they didn't use more characters from the available franchises and it ignored Cyberbots.
That low roster was a killer! This is when the crossover games and Dragon Ball Tenkaichi came out with big rosters!
This game was almost Capcom's downfall until Street Fighter 4. In my opinion this was a great concept but executed horribly.
Welllllll I mean in between this and SFIV they diiiiiid release a little game called Resident Evil 4. Hahahaha. I think they had it covered.
@@johnnybyrd300 Ya got me there!😬
I was talking about fighting games but Capcom as a whole was probably doing alright.
If those of you want a good capcom fighting game, play the mugen project capcom universe nexus of heroes that my friends is what capcom fighting evolution should’ve been 😤
The ever excessive milking of SF characters didn’t do this game any favors.
The current KOF has the same problem when it comes to FF characters.
This game was honestly my guilty pleasure when it came to fighting games. It was loads of fun.
I actually enjoyed Figjting Jam at the time. To put things in correct context we'd been absolutely starved of 2D fighters outside of KIF when thus game came out. It was also 1st time Red Earth Caracters playable on home console outside of Tessa
Capcom Fighting All Stars should be revived. With how experienced capcom are now, it could be phenomenal
Agreed
If not revived, then at least include the main three new characters at some point in the future of Street Fighter 6.
Yeah instead of Tekken X Street fighter, we should have to get that instead with that same dreamcasty styled graphics
This collection introduced me to CVS2 so it wasn’t a failure for me.
This games only value is to introduce people to better games. It's like a 5 way demo that should have been free with a magazine.
I had this game for the PS2 I liked it.
Me too. I got it as a birthday gift. It got me interested in Red Earth.
@@RingloomAzur Exactly, Capcom changed so few in Zangief that I am not sure why they did even bother.
Street Fighter 1 characters were also going to be included in the game being these Eagle using his CVS2 sprite, Sagat using a redrawn version of his SF2 sprite like what they did with the characters in CVS2 and Retsu, entirely redrawn for this game, but if i recall correctly they were cut because they ran out of time (you can search their sprites, they were posted at some point in a Street Fighter 5 official page) it seems that the fourth one is unknown
And I have said this in other videos about the game but the characters' sprites got retouched, the most notably ones being Demitri who looks taller (as he should've been since the start) and Zangief who reuses his Alpha sprite but they also redrew his face. The rest of characters including the two ones i said change slightly or more notably their color palette for some reason, and for the Street Fighter 2 characters they either reused the Capcom vs SNK 2 resprites (Ryu, Bison, Akuma) or used the Alpha sprites (Zangief, Guile)
I'm not sure it was mentioned, but the 2v2 mechanic is borrowed from the one used in Rival Schools.
Call it Capcom All Stars lol
When I see character select screen I was disappointed
I love Darkstalkers so liked being able to play with my favorite characters and fight my favorite Street Fighter characters..it wasn’t the greatest but I like.
This was the first game I ever returned, first day too. I was so disappointed with it.
This game was like Capcom's take on Mugen, it was just a copy-paste job.
Really did enjoy this video and found it interesting. Only thing I found jaring is you Big Daddy TopHat saying "evolution". It's actually pronounced "Eevolution". Too many people here in the UK miss-pronounce this word.
I remember playing this game as a kid and realizing that Capcom games can actually suck
Basically my experience. Can't think of a single trash fighter they made before this.
This was Capcom's attempt at doing a King Of Fighters which was successfully done by SNK with combining characters from different games in to a new series not only was Capcom late to this party they executed it poorly although SNK's new attempt at this formula with Neo Geo Battle coliseum bombed as well
NGBC should've had two games:
One still called *NEO•GEO Battle Coliseum* centered on fighting where characters from Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, KOF, Burning Fight, King of the Monsters, etc are playable.
In reality, this was Capcom don't even trying.
@@KenMasters.
Maybe a third:
Neo Geo Super Heroes - A game based on their non-FG, non-brawler roster such as Metal Slug, King of the Monsters, Twinkle Star Sprites, Magician Lord, etc. Magic, superpowers, cartoon physics, and more marvel-style gameplay.
@@austinreed7343
Oh, the non-fighters of SNK would basically be the unlockables in both Coliseum games, much like in KOF XI. It wouldn't be as fun without the fighting game characters on the roster.
Ones I’m thinking of:
• Athena (from SVC Chaos) *Swordclash*
• Cathy (from Top Hunter) *Battle*
• Elta (from Magician Lord) *ALPHA*
• Eri Kasamoto (from Metal Slug) *Battle*
• Fiolina Germi (from Metal Slug) *Battle*
• Johnny (from Mutation Nation) *Battle*
• Marco Rossi (from Metal Slug) *Battle*
• Mars People (from Metal Slug) *Battle*
• Maxima (from Robo Army) *Battle*
• Ricky (from Mutation Nation) *Battle*
• Rocky (from Robo Army) *Battle*
• Roddy (from Top Hunter) *Battle*
• Tarma Roving (from Metal Slug) *Battle*
@@KenMasters.
I’d imagine the brawlers would already be in Battlr Coliseum, and what if Neo Geo Super Heroes was a smash clone instead?
This is the only game I have sealed still. I actually bought a copy to play and a copy to keep for the collection.
I love the endings. Udon comics.
I actually enjoyed that game. 1 extra character from each game would of made a big difference. I from the UK and mines called Fighting Jam.
Capcom Fighting Jam sounds better,
and in the US we get "Evolution" on the title.
@@KenMasters. I agree. Things like that confuse me. Like how different do they think we are? Lol
The sprite work makes the game look like a Mugen... made by Capcom
@@KKHell That actually makes it more Mugen like IMO, it's not even consistent with it's inconsistency.
@@KKHell Each to their own and all that, but I gotta say I love the Alpha sprites for basically all the characters. Even the shotos and their bread roll looking cutesy feet.
this game coulda been sick. updated. with graphical assets original to the game. add in some rivals characters, and some from SNK. maybe a few others. hopefulyl the new garou game is good
I brought this game long time ago at Fry's electronics sucks it didn't play as well after playing it 😔 I still have the PS2 version in my room.
I think it looks pretty cool, is it available on the XBox S/X?
I didnt understand why Pyron was the last boss when Jedah was in the game and he was the last boss of Darkstalkers III. Making Pyron the last boss made no sense if Jedah is in the game. If Jedah isnt the final boss than just make Shin Akuma the final boss then and not a secret boss.
Probably because Pyron is more broken than Jedah.
Final fight revenge is an Ok game
Why did it fail? Given the end result,The question should be why was it even released?!
Seriously they should have a RedEarth FIGHTING GAME With all the Four Characters + Bosses & 4-6 new red earth characters and Bam a sure fire hit ....
Still better than neo geo battle colliseum. That was alright.. that's just it.
Interesting concept. On practice though it feels as if Capcom was just finding new and creative ways of cheating us off a new Darkstalkers game
Jedah and Red Earth were the only reason I got game day 1. He’s the only reason I got MvCI as well
This game could have been better if they included more backgrounds from multiple series, air combo system from marvel be capcom and more characters. Would have been a classic.
I'm still wondering why the hell did they changed Guy's head and Zangief idle animation Zero Sprites as they looked terrible. Same goes to Urien his animation was changed a bit
I still liked that game, I wish for a re-release and also wish they would make a sequel!
So considering a character's system mechanics are determined by the game they came from, what mechanics did Ingrid have?
I remember buying this game on release and how mad I was for buying it when I got home. I was so excited. Even bought the controller made for it. Which was trash on day 1! I saved for so long just to waste it on this game. 😂😂
There's something strange about seeing M. Bison kicking a cat.
Yup was in Capcom vs SNK 2 before Fighting Jam
We need a new Capcom Fighting All Stars not in the disastrous 3D, but 2.5D.
The fact that Capcom actually ruined some sprites (by changing some pointless details) and also the fact that this game clearly wasn't tested enough (having weird bugs like those juggles only some SF3 chars have)... this game was a complete disaster.
If someone says this game was rock solid, he is either:
-A liar.
-Blind.
"Bitches love tag team matches" 😂
If they wouldve at least put 6 per game and had boss for each series if they woldve done 8 since it was a sad copying and paste work especially the red earth crew couldve really made a big diffrence
We desperately a new Capcom all star game. MvC , Snk vs Capcom 3, something new, just anything!
Capcom vs Sega would be dope
As long as Namco is in there.
Just to point out a mistake on the video. You can switch character, or not, when winning and losing. So most of the time, you choose 2 characters but only play one…wich is worse than standard kof style system if you ask me ! (But no one is xD)
This game is awful, but the menu and intro designs are pretty coll, plus those Shinkiro artworks are lit... Capcom should use his talent more often
Why drop a nearly finished 3D game with several original ideas, then spend the remaining time rushing a entirely different 2D game with almost no additions whatsoever, is truly a concept I can never understand from old Capcom. It's also a shame no one of the original employees is able to ever speak about what really happenned to it...
they should've taken lessons on how to do a capcom only crossover fighting game from king of fighters and super smash bros
i sort of would like to see a game like this but Blazblue, Persona, Guilty Gear and UnderNight
Aside from GG, you basically described BB:Tag, which is also a trash "official Mugen" game.
*I Bought This Game And Returned It 😅 The Same Day*
I owned this game.
I actually like this game the stages artwork is the best. I think they should of made street fighter alpha stages or Capcom vs snk stages like this.
It's kinda sad since this is the LAST 2D fighter from the company
There was HD Remix and USF2 if you want to be technical.
I knew of this game for years, but finally bought it for ps2 in 2010 when i went on a retro binge. This game was terrible lol
Couldve been so much more.
Capcom are rising back to the top where they belong. Showing other companies how it should be done. Gives me hope for the future of gaming.
Capcom Fighting Evolution felt like a fan-made Mugen game. I couldn't take that game seriously.
Ah the crossover we didn't deserve.
The crossover we needed.
Sort of.
Ali v Chan, would be a true dream fight.
This is why I feel imo Mugen is very important I bet someone can make a better version of Capcom fighting jam then Capcom did owo
I still quite liked the Frankenstein that was Fighting Jam !!!
Sounds like it was Capcom's take on KOF
Wasn’t this already covered previously?
and its back
This figures I only have like one or two Capcom fighting games like that and I get one that sucks like Capcom fighting evolution. Although before I had maybe the only one that was ever worse than that in Street fighter EX3
