To this day I still love CvS 1's presentation, from the music to the announcer this game has a lot going for it. Visually this game was amazing, sprite work to fireball effects looked amazing. CvS2 is still my go to game but once in a while i'll pop this sucker into my DC and appreciate the work that went into it, because if it wasn't for this one we wouldn't have CvS2.
I agree, and I might catch some blow back for this BUT upon further review I like CVS1 more than CVS2. Hear me out for a second, CVS 1 has more replay value, and a ton of extra content to unlock. I spent countless hours on CVS1 back in 2000 when it first came out on Sega Dreamcast. In 2001 when CVS2 came out there were WAY less unlockables, but that was compensated for more characters and grooves. I understand that, but CVS2 left a lot to be desired as far as grinding and working for points to unlock extra content. Unpopular opinion probable, but I’m sure I’m part of the minority that likes CVS1 over CVS2. Don’t get me wrong I love CVS2 and the huge roster of characters, but I just felt more immersed in CVS1.
@@XxLast__BossxX thank you for understanding brother, believe it or not I’m playing the game right now. I’m getting an hour in before I gotta sign in for work at 10. 😅
As much as a classic as it was, it really lacked representation from Capcom's other fighter IPs. It really felt like SNK vs Street Fighter with one Darkstalker character, one Rival School character. I feel it didnt live up to the TRUE potential it couldve had. They should've had Street Fighter, Final Fight, Rival Schools, Power Stone, Red Earth, Plasma Sword, Captain Commando and some Mega Man (Legends seems to fit better tbh) representing the Capcom side. Same with SNK, they also have other fighting IPs like Savage Reign, Buriki One, and a Metal Slug rep. Also, I feel CvS1 had better stages, music and presentation than 2 did.
If only Kisarah Westfield from Aggressors of Dark Kombat was in that roster... Kisarah is actually the first female character who fights wearing a high school uniform, even before the famous Sakura (Street Fighter) I would have loved to see Kisarah and Sakura being rivals. Hope we see Kisarah in KOF XV or in a sequel of SNK Heroines.
One thing I must give this game over the sequel is the backgrounds. I just think they look so much better and are that much more distinct and unique. I mean, in CvS2 you fight in the desert, in the artic (which is a desert, only with snow instead of sand), in front of a couple of windmills. Pretty looking, but not that exciting. But a back alley where the sprites cast shadows on the wall? Cool. A half-finished house? Unique. Both on a rainy street and inside an arcade in the same level? Astonishing. A temple at sunset? Gorgeous. And of course I'm always a softie for a good train fight. Not to mention all the variety. Both what looks like an old japanese village at night and a high-tech fighting lab in the same game? Yeah, that is pretty cool. So yeah, the backgrounds in this game are among my faves. Yes, the sequels had some cute cameos, but still can't hold a candle to this ones more varied and interesting palette.
Some of the stages are actually specific locales from other games, like Pao Pao Cafe and Aensland Castle, or at least inspired by them. The second game never got as specific as the first did. Imagine getting stages like a SHMUP-filled hangar in space, the SIN Laboratory in ruins, the Final Weapon from X4 being sieged by Mars People, Metro City under attack by monsters from Mutation Nation... Really mix the two companies together for the stages.
I wish people would touch on the artwork more of this game. To truly immerse the players in this crossover, SNK characters were drawn by Capcom artists and Capcom characters were done by snk artists. All the promotional material looked awesome.
Let's not forget: DC/PS2 Marvel 2 *did* also have unlockable colors/characters via their points system, too. But yeah, there's a reason this is heralded as the golden age of FGs! CvS2 may be the definitve gameplay experience, but CvS1 was the peak of presentation!
Correction, not all the CAPCOM fighters were transplanted from the SF:Alpha/Zero series.....only MOST of them were. M.Bison, ChunLi, Ryu, Ken, and Akuma (maybe Dan) had all new sprites drawn specifically for this game. It still vexes me to no end that CAPCOM did the work to create all new sprites for these 5 (maybe 6) characters as well as the entire SNK roster....but just didn't bother to do 1 more all new sprite for Morrigan.
I wasn't too familiar with SNK when I first played this at the Metreon in 2000. All I knew was Fatal Fury and Samurai Showdown from their 90's anime movies. I liked how different the roster felt from MVC1 at the time.
This would be a perfect time for Capcom vs SNK 3. Capcom and SNK are both firing on all cylinders currently. It would bring so much HYPE to see them work together again. IT IS TIME!!!
Seriously need another SNK VS now more than ever! Not only because were in a fightening game renaissance again, but we seriously need Blue Mary to call out Cammy for stealing her look!!!!😂

It's funny you put this out on the anniversary of the game. While I played all the SNK and Capcom fighters. I missed out completely on this one. I'm definitely gonna check it out now.
Can't get enough of Capcom Vs. SNK can you? Don't blame you, it is indeed amazing. I especially appreciate it introducing lesser known series like Last Blade. Hopefully in the next game things can be more diverse and less SF Vs. KOF though those were the most popular at the time. As more people are introduced to more series(special thanks to you), the crossover will be even better.
Yeah. That is why I much prefer the rosters of SVC Chaos and Neo Geo Battle Coliseum. Those games have very unique choices! I prefer seeing obscure/less popular faces over the same characters every time.
The only Capcom vs SNK game I've played is SvC Chaos. Were SNK gave the Street Fighter characters their drawn sprite and I can never forget that intro where Kyo and Ryu were using their special moves only for Akuma and Mr Karate to interfere.

What was your main team?
Quick question. Which is better? CVS 1 or CVS 2?
CVS= capcom vs snk
I like part 2 more. More fighters, hidden characters, story endings, fighting grooves, & it just feels better. There's just more extras. Extra modes too, but part 1 was fun as well
I love the gameplay of 2 more. But I love the Sprite work of number 1 more.
this guy literally just complained about people calling out other people for intentionally misleading people with sensationalized click-bait tag lines. KekW people that dont like it when other people lie to their faces are "boring" rofl.
As a longtime subscriber I always love the irreverence!
need more capcom vs snk, i am done with capcom vs marvel stuff
I just found out about the SF6 TMNT skins TODAY (8.17.2023 - Thu.) $60?! SERIOUSLY??!!!
