This was a fantastic era for fighters as a whole. So many amazing fighters were available with arcade perfect ports available on home consoles. CvS2 is eternally goated. This is true love we're making!
I have incredibly fond memories of this game with my buddy back in the day. This and SFIII have that Dreamcast/Optimistic Turn of Millennium Vibe, that jazzy trip-pop thing that Japanese game designers were throwing down from Jet Set Radio to the aforementioned fighters. We played this game for HOURS, chilling in his room, barely working AC, sweating our arses off, and having absolute blast. It is an exceptionally well made game and tons of fun.
The Final Battle (If your score was high enough) with Shin Akuma or Ultra Rugal was iconic especially Akuma's ending where the Gods pull him into the sky.
Though not mentioned, I wanna thank Capcom VS SNK for using the beautiful artwork of Kinu Nishimura and Mori Toshiaki! Anytime you selected an SNK groove you'd be treated to Toshiaki's realistic art style and Nishimura's sexy, manga-esque art for Capcom. Both contributed to the 1st game as well, but here, they were in charge of illustrating ALL Characters from both rosters! Personal fave arts are Nishimuras Evil Ryu/Mai/Morrigan and Toshiaki's Athena/Morrigan/Ryo!❤
Still an incredible fighting game to bless DC, PS2 and CB! The VS lineup was incredible( only rivaled with SVC) highly improved battle systems and made the games presentation so much more enthusiastic compare to the 1st game! Still a fantastic game to this very day and still enjoyed by all CAP/ SNK fans!
I always hoped that Capcom would release another true 2D fighter over the years. Besides the Super Turbo HD re-release, and I could be wrong, but the last 2D fighter Capcom dropped was Capcom Fighting Jam. I think there would be a market for another 2D sprite fighter.
@@YaowBucketHEADI think they’re worried any 2D title would cannibalize their current-gen titles which I think is premature thinking, there is a whole demographic out there of older players like me who just don’t get much into the 3D fighters.
I was in the Navy at the time, which was fortunate for me as I was able to pick up Millionaire Fighting on the Dreamcast in Dubai. Actually I stocked up, their game stores were great.
Marvel vs. Capcom animations are the Street Fighter Alpha series animations, Capcom vs. SNK animations are the Street Fighter III series animations and Street Fighter X Tekken is the Street Fighter IV series animations I see the patterns.
You are thinking of Capcom Fighting Jam/Evolution, where Chun and Yun were directly lifted from 3s. They were both re-drawn for CVS2 to match new sprites. Same goes for plenty of characters.
There were only a few Capcom characters that got new sprites, the are a number of Alpha sprites used in CVS Blanka, Cammy, Sagat, Morrigan, and E Honda to name a few. Ryu, Ken, Bison, Chun Li got new sprites in CVS and Eagle, Kyosuke, Rolento and Maki got new sprites in CVS 2. Honestly would love if this got a remaster with all the Capcom characters getting made in the same style along with bringing back the backgrounds from CVS 1.
P groove rewards you heavily for parrying, although the animation is rougher than SF3 so it's way harder. There are some P-groove pros that make it look super easy though. S groove lets you attack out of dodge, with some characters having way better dodge attacks. K groove's Just Defend attack (block before you're hit) gives you a liiiiiiitle bit of health back and less block stun. It's a less risky parry but with less reward. And the home versions let you make custom grooves that make hilarious TAS videos.
This game is still my number 1 as far as fighters go. Still have my ps2 copy from launch day and will never get rid of it. I was really looking forward to this game when it launched. I had so many combo videos before launch and couldn't wait to get my hands on it. If all the capcom sprites had been redrawn it would've been the KOF13 for capcom.
There’s another big game, by SNK, that uses 3D backgrounds with 2D sprites, KOF Dream Match 99, an exclusive Dreamcast port of KOF 98 arcade but with the aforementioned enhanced 3D backgrounds.
At EVO I met a handful of amazing CVS2 Players who were so kind and taught me and helped me learn more about a game I’ve been trying to learn for about a year! Really love this video mate, as a Maki anchor I gotta show respects
CVS2 is one of the best fighting games for fighting game fans. For anyone else, it's a nightmare. Trying to explain the groove system to someone who doesn't understand the concepts is like trying to give someone a crash course in calculus while they're struggling with 4th grade arithmetic.

This was my game. I bought a controller adapter so I could use a PS2 controller on my Xbox and I played on Xbox live all the time. Terry, Ken, Geese(2) was my main team, but sometimes swapped Ken for Rock, maybe Terry for Kyo. The occasional Iori, and towards the end of my time with it, I was learning Dictator. So many great memories both playing on the couch with friends and online. I remember I beat the rank 2 guy, Phantom Iceman one time. He must have been testing a new team, because we matched again right away and he OBLITERATED me. Good times.

Capcom vs SNK 2 is one of the very few 2D sprite fighters I still play till this very day. Along with Street Fighter Alpha 3, Street Fighter 3: Third Strike, and Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo.

That's little more than half of the Capcom roster lol! It's fair to knock on Capcom for doing it, but have to note how some of them got touched up or an overhaul to at least try to match the newly drawn characters like the shotos, Chun Li, Eagle, M.Bison, Maki & Yun.
The only competition this game had in terms of crossovers and character select was smash bros. You didn’t even have to know what Snk was to enjoy playing the characters
I was never really good at fighting games at a competitive level but I love my 2D fighters and this one was very special. It's on a different level on it's own.
I love that the SFII charge characters remain pure charge characters in this one. Really fun combo system and great versions of many characters, including my fav SF character, Bison - though I hate the paint the fence exploit and how he's top tier :( Also, unfortunately all high level matches are with the same few characters, much like KoF98... Would love to play this against other more casual players. Played this a lot against the CPU at some point and learned to consistently beat the arcade mode on the highest difficulty without losing. Though, against Shin Akuma and Ultimate Rugal I usually used 4-block Bison instead of a varied team.
