Honda Accord vs Acura TLX | What’s Really Different Between These Sibling Sedans?

- As a followup to our 1992 Honda Accord vs 1992 Acura Vigor video from earlier, we have the chance to look at the modern versions of each car. Our Showdown is on the 2018 Honda Accord 1.5L Touring and 2018 Acura TLX Tech.
We had the opportunity to film the 2018 Acura TLX Tech at Acura Trois-Rivières. They have a fantastic showroom and inventory of new and pre-owned vehicles. You can find their website here: www.acuratroisrivieres.com/
We thoroughly enjoyed the 2018 Honda Accord 1.5L Touring, but wanted to see what the Acura brand had to offer, now that the TLX isn't just the European version of the Accord. The 2018 Honda Accord is all-new, whereas the TLX is based off the 9th generation Accord's interior and exterior, but received a facelift for the 2018 model year.
Our comparison is based more on price, features, and the FWD layout of both cars. The Acura is more expensive than the Honda in our Showdown, but should serve as a good basis for people who're cross-shopping both cars at around a $40,000 budget. The Accord is fully loaded but offers the smaller 1.5L engine, whereas the TLX is one trim above the base and comes lightly equipped in comparison.
We're not comparing which car is ultimately better, but what the real differences are between the two of them, and what you end up getting if you jump up-market to the Acura TLX. We also don't have a standalone episode of TestDrive Spotlight for the 2018 Acura TLX Tech as we're hoping to get the vehicle directly from Honda Canada down the road to feature with more time to experience it.

It seems like we always need to justify our Showdown episodes, especially once we've received our dozenth complaint about the exact same thing. A lot of comments have come in about the 1.5L engine we filmed over the larger 2.0L engine available in the Accord. First off, Honda Canada booked us with the smaller Accord, we don't decide what cars we get at this point, so we take what we're given and film the best episode we can. Second, the 2.0L Accord has a 252 horsepower engine, whereas the Showdown we have here compares the Acura TLX which has only 14 horsepower over the 1.5L engine in this Accord. I think a lot of people like to complain just for the sake of being negative, and it's very disappointing to us. We stand by this episode, and we stand by the engine choices for this comparison. We don't think the 2.0L engine in the Accord is more comparable, it would be significantly faster than the Acura in this case, not to mention having almost 100 lb-ft more of torque.
Perpetual Radio Networks well said
Oh come on, don't fall for the trolls lol. You put yourself on the tube, gotta learn to roll with the punches. I thought it was a good comparison but others may not, no big deal.
Crybabies gonna cry!
Seems like it!
Personally I think it makes sense what you did. You are comparing the "base" engines of the 2 cars. If you had the 2.0T Accord then perhaps the V-6 TLX would make sense. I do disagree with your assessment on how Honda is treating the Accord as "less sporty". The TLX offers the A-Spec and the Accord offers the Sport for those seeking more performance. More importantly, the Accord offers both engines in the Sport trim with manual transmissions. Both the TLX and the Accord have trim offerings to satisfy Performance and Luxury. Although the TLX is on an older platform, it still comes off with a more premium feel all around. I can't wait for the next generation TLX especially if it reflects the direction they are going with the new RDX. Thanks for the good review!
You went off the line in the Accord in Econ mode?
It would’ve been nice if you could’ve snagged the AWD version with red leather, that’s a stunner! Also we’d LOVE to see a review of the w140 S class! Much love from NYC
We’re hoping to get a TLX A-Spec from Honda, but we specifically asked for this trim since it was front whee drive and as close in price/features to the Accord. W140 S-Class Spotlight goes live on Monday at 7am ET!
Saw the accord ride by and man it’s way sexier in person
It's a decent looking car, we've only spotted a few of the 2018s on the road though.
You should see the one with red leather seats ❤️
Better than Toyota Camry?
@@AUA-camChannelwithNoName high trim cam looks sexy with tents too. But the accord has a better profile its sleeker IMO. 😁👍🏿
Exterior--> Acura
Interior--> Honda
Honda take note!
It's all about the looks and brand. Just like Lexus and Toyota. Buy the Accord if you want to blend in with every other cars on the roads. From grandmas, grandpas, teenagers, etc. The TLX have the uniqueness feel to it when driving. Doesn't feel like a boat, turn nicely and very agile for a car of it's size. I have the 2019 TLX Aspec and no regrets. I rarely ever see one in my city. Maybe 1 in a week. While the Accords I see 5 for every street I'm on. Plus, you'll be happier with the TLX.
The 4 wheel steering on the non-AWD models is definitely underrated! Helps with the steering for sure.
I'll never understand people's obsession with "looks and brand". Go ahead and pay a greater amount of money to impress people who forget about you 5 seconds later. I rather buy something fun and cost efficient and save the "looks and brand" money for something else.
@@kalookakoo5 its just not looks and brand.. the tlx is much quieter inside. luxury cars use better noise isolation materials.. my sister in laws civic was super loud and same with my Altima. I am glad I traded in and went with the tlx. its a smooth ride and very quiet when riding. blocks out a lot of noise.
I agree!
Great review!
Thanks, we appreciate it! This is a video we've bene hoping to film for ever now.
Is the Base 2.4L TLX cabin significantly quieter inside than the 2018 Accord ? Also which car drives better..and why ?
Wow the interior of the TLX looks dated compared to the Accord. The front end looks way better than the Honda though.
We're thinking the TLX could see a complete update for 2020, this year was the exterior facelift so Acura might not be rushing to replace it right away, but it's certainly going to be a need.
The Honda looks like it has Down syndrome
Pablo Herasme they both look like they do
So funny when I come to Canada and were power folding mirror as luxury....in Jamaica power folding mirror is standard for all cars even a Toyota Corolla. Guess it's marketing for ya
dj ochi and the acura tsx is sold as honda accord in jamaica
Love that Acura, really a great looking car. Hopefully you can get a TLX A-Spec vs Lexus IS350 F Sport or an Infiniti Q50s
We're hoping too! With more comments like this it can help to show Honda that there's interest in us filming these types of cars!
Perpetual Radio Networks I sure hope Honda see’s these comments then
We hope so too!
I test drove the V6 TLX and the Q50s and ended up with the F Sport Is350. TLX performance was garbage. Q50s is a better performer than both. I avoided the Infiniti because of poor resale value and horrible real world Mpg. On paper the Mpg seems close but real world driving that car drinks gas like water compared to the Lexus and Acura. Had that motor in G37 a few years ago. Got rid of it due to horrible gas mileage. Other aspects like how many safety and tech features were not considered at the time of my comparison because my main focus was driving performance.
@Perpetual Radio Networks, hey man I read somewhere that Acura claims the Type-S will be coming back. I really hope you guys will be on top of this because if this is true, could it also mean that manual transmission will be once again available?! Holy crap... that would be so sick!
That Acura Aspec is awesome... even though 290 horses is a little weak but still sufficient in combination with the SHawd... almost a perfect driving experience... I’m curious as to what the type s aspect will be like...
We're hoping to be able to feature some of Acura's new models as they start refreshing them.
You’re on drugs if you think 290 is weak 0-60 in 5.4 seconds bruh. Clearly know nothing it’s not a truck that needs 400 horses
Some of the equipment in the Accord Touring is available with the A-Spec and/ or Advance packages in the TLX
That's certainly true, in fact I believe the only tech gadget found on the Accord that isn't available on the Acura is the colour heads-up display.
I ended up buying a 2020 TLX Aspec 2.4 over the Accord for the following reasons: Factory rebate, the DCT, the tried and true naturally-aspirated 2.4, power folding mirrors, sportier exterior in Aspec trim, and...of all things, gas struts for the hood as I hate pop rods with a passion. Yeah, the nav screen is dated, but honestly, the dual screen setup has its advantages, and if the map graphics bother you that much, just connect to Carplay. So far, no regrets. Just be prepared that despite the DCT and Aspec trim, the TLX is a cruiser, not a bruiser. It has just enough (barely) sporting attributes to keep the drive interesting. But this is my secondary, commuter car, so I have no problem with its life mission. In fact, given that my toy ride is a BMW M2 which punishes my internal organs on every drive, I find myself grabbing for the TLX key fob more often than I thought I would!
Fair enough!
A CPO 2018/19 Acura TLX or a brand new Honda Accord Sport 1.5L? Those are the top two cars I am currently considering, along with maybe a new Camry. I have always been a Honda guy, though.
I started at the Honda dealership looking at the Accord and ended up buying the Acura TLX. I didn't even test drive the Accord, I really liked the interior, but strongly disliked the exterior. I wanted a car that was sexy and I thought it looked like a suburban dad car. Of course the Accord is a great car, for anyone to say otherwise would be silly, I just didn't like the look of it. But after driving my 4 cylinder TLX Elite for a year, I just wanted to share that I absolutely love owning this car.
The leather (not leather "trim" - ALL leather) seats look totally premium, better than the Accord and I can drive for 6 hours without getting fatigued - the suspension and ride quality is part of that, of course. And the engine is so quiet I don't even know if the car is on sometimes. I love having the two screens - Apple car play runs on the top, and the car's apps (e.g. the stereo / HDD / Sirius XM) run on the bottom - except navigation, which always runs on the top whether its Google Maps or the car's native app - it is VERY well thought out and makes sense. The ELS sound system is also very impressive. As an audiophile I still want to upgrade the speakers one day, but that day will be after I finish paying for the car, I'm not in a hurry, the sound system is GREAT for OEM. This is from someone who spent over 2 grand on aftermarket stereo equipment for my old Honda Civic.
The other thing is the car is like your butler, it thinks of all your needs and serves you like you're the boss. Keyless entry and exit, heated front windshield (still not sure how that works) - I never scraped ice off my windows once this winter while my neighbors labored away. I just remote started the car, then went and wiped the windows with a squeegee, and the winter was horrible this year. Same with interior and side defog and side mirror defrosting, these things work at top tier i.e. 1.5 minutes and you're driving, 5 minutes and all windows are crystal clear. And when I walk away, the side mirrors fold up on their own - cool! The car never honks at me to tell me its doing stuff, just quiet beeps saying "I'm locked now" and also "hold up buddy, I'm not locked." Built in car alarm too, learned that when I left my wife in the car and she opened the door and it went off. And the car is super quiet inside, virtually no road noise.
As far as pick-up goes, I can confidently pass anyone on the highway, and the gas pedal is very responsive in "Normal" dynamic mode - the car will give you whiplash and the tires will spin and slip if you drop your foot down at the green light (I'm getting high performance summer tires next month, so they don't spin like that) - you can peel out with smoking rubber in a 4 cylinder TLX. It does take premium gas, but if I stick to my half hour daily commute 2x a day the tank will last me 2 weeks - but I find an excuse to go for a super long drive every weekend, I just can't leave it in the driveway for one full day, I love driving it so much.
Glad to hear you made a purchase for the car you wanted! The TLX has always been a popular choice out in our area, we’re hoping to get a chance to feature it properly in 2019!
Thank you for this post! Best real life review without a video!
Im thinking abt buying 2015 4cyl tlx
What’s the year of yours ??
I’m currently driving a 06 tl I’m love it so much
And I’ve driven a 330i bmw 2017
I can tell you I feel like my tl the ride was better but the bmw was quieter
My tl it’s 15yrs old anyway didn’t expect it to be quieter
Weird the Acura is on the old platform. Usually the premium car gets the new platform then it moves down to the regular car a few years later, right?
That's usually the case, but recently auto manufacturers have started cutting out as much 'waste' as possible, and cross-sharing platforms between their divisions is a lot more common, like VW with the MQB platform that basically underpins everything sold in N/A with a VW and Audi badge. Same for Acura/Honda, mostly since consumers don't care anymore. They see the Acura as being a more prestigious brand and buy it regardless of how it's assembled.
1:25, power folding mirrors on the Acura but only in the "Advanced" package, I have a 2018 2.4L Tech and it does not have power folding mirrors. 2:17, the Acura TLX Tech package does not have heated rear seats either.
Are you in the US? We find that packaging and options is often different with Canadian-spec models, often coming with features like heated seats or power folding mirrors because of our colder climate, whereas they're features either reserved for higher trim/packages in the US, or not offered at all.
@@PRNTestDrive I see! Yes, I'm in the US, that makes sense then that there are differences since you're in Canada.
A lot of ppl are talking about the new 2018 Mazda 6 turbo being a strong competitor to the Honda Accord! Are you planning on reviewing the Mazda 6 turbo if you get your hands on one??
We are, and we have a date! We're filming a 2018 Mazda6 Signature on Wednesday, it will fall under our TestDrive Snapshot show, since we'll only have the car for a couple hours, but it will give us enough time to go over all the new changes for 2018 including that CX-9 turbocharged engine! We're pretty excited about it.
Very nice comparison video but I am still not sure which car to lease? I am thinking TLX base with Tech package or 2.0 EX-L? Any advice will be greatly appreciated :)
Depends on what you want out of the car! If you're up here in Canada the EX-L is only available with the 1.5L engine, but we still found it had more than enough power to get things going. The Acura isn't a bad car by any means, but it's lighter on features for the same price the 2.0L Touring Accord is. If it were us, we'd take the Honda, we really liked the interior and quality and overall performance. You also won't need premium fuel, and insurance might be cheaper since it's not in the premium segment.
Perpetual Radio Networks yeah I am in New Jersey so if I take Accord it has to be 2.0. So Acura TLX needs better gas then regular???
It does! Acura recommends premium fuel much like Infiniti and Lexus. Even our 1992 Acura Vigor needed premium over our 1990 Honda Accord.
Who cares just buy used when they're both 5 years old and go for the best deal
Exactly lol
Why
Vous êtes au quebec right ? Great review👍
Merci! We are in Québec, that's correct!
Whats up with the Acura interior being outdated? Honda got the first update? You would think the luxury brand would get the newer tech first.
That would be the logical way to do things, but it seems that Acura is taking a bit of a back seat these days with the RDX being the only new product for 2019.
I test drove a 2017 Acura TLX V6 SH-AWD and found nothing to tempt me away from my 2008 Acura TL V6 FWD. For some reason Acura put Goodyear tires on them which had poor grip, the power was decent but the electronic steering that most cars have nowadays was vague and numb. Perhaps if Acura had released a Type-S then it might have been a different story.
Acura seems lost these days, they aren't sure if they want to be a performance brand or a luxury brand, but they can't really do both at the same time.
@@PRNTestDrive the TLX Type-S concept implies they may have found their way again. Luxury and performance is a hard balance to attain, unless you're an M-car or AMG. Is Acura going to aim that high? We'll see. driving.ca/acura/auto-news/news/acuras-type-s-concept-shows-us-what-a-new-tlx-could-look-like
Nice and thorough review thank you guy!
Glad you liked it, thanks!
Waiting for TLX to update their interior.. till than sticking to my 2009 honda civic.
We're surprised the TLX wasn't updated for 2019, maybe for the 2020 model year they'll do a complete generation update.
Perpetual Radio Networks Hopefully it won't look like the new Accord. I've driven Accords since 1991 and cannot believe how ugly the new Accord.
Hello Toyota.
the time has come.
I've owned three Honda Accord and loved all three but now l own a TLX and it's better in every way
Glad to hear it!
Im considering a TLX and see your comment is a year old. Still feel positively about your TLX?
I'm late to this video. Should I buy an '18 TLX I4 or an Accord 1.5T 6 speed manual 🤔?
I'd probably just go with the Acura, if those were truly the only two choices available.
Dude, can't believe you mentioned the M3 in the same paragraph/sentence/week when talking TLX. TLX isn't as quick as the 335i (340i now), not even close. M3 is different league entirely...
Your reviews are excellent though
I do think we were trying to make the point that the Acura doesn't compete with anything BMW has to offer, but we might not have gotten it across the way we should have. We really don't think Acura is on the same level as BMW or Mercedes.
You know it's weird back in the 90s and even in the early 2000s I used to see a lot of Acuras on the road but these past couple of years the Acuras seem to have died down I wonder what happen
I think it depends on the area. We saw a lot of TLXs in the Toronto area last weekend, and the RDX seems to be a popular choice out here.
Acura was kind of in a slump from 2010 to just recently. They really struggled with their identity and had a lot of outdated models. They've gotten a lot better recently though. And they should continue to get better since they'll start updating their models with new honda platforms.
What happened? Look at the Acura TL from 2009. lol. The "beak" front design killed the sales of the TL. Acura is coming back full swing though with the new RDX this 2019, the introduction of the Type S (thank the lord!), and offering A-Spec on most models. The ILX is also very disappointing. The MDX and RDX are great models, and truly been carrying the brand.
The Vigor, Legend and Integra played a big role in their lineup. Then after was the RL, RSX, TSX and the TL which were really nice cars.
There are better options in todays market. For example, the ILX is a glorified Civic which I’d rather get a Civic Touring. Honda’s lineup seems more appealing and affordable
That's very true to. But I doni't believe that's the cause of Acura's decline in sales. Acura has the SH-AWD, used to have the Type-S, and a better feel of quality interior plastics then a Honda. The Accord definitely hurt sales, but I think the design hurt it more. No idea who thought it would be great to go away from the TL and TSX to make the TLX. It was a downgrade for TL fans regarding size and the options (rather a standard V-6.)
superb! video, neil i think you need to go japan and make some nice video.... it would be really nice see JDM cars, and still waiting for lexus GS350 3rd gen video ...thanks
That would definitely be a fun trip! A happy compromise would be if we could find a local importer in this area to feature inventory, but it seems like the best Japanese and Euro importers are out in Vancouver.
Having owned the TLX, the most important comment you made: "The Acura is dated". When the Acura is fully updated, including looks, I will be an Acura buyer again.
The Navigation feels older than what's on my 2001 BMW 7 Series.
@@PRNTestDriveIts terrible and left me hanging many times over 3 years.
With the technology now, I want a navigation that looks like something off "The Sims". I'd still take the TLX though.
@@roastbeefsandwich2084 22 is up dated interior
Great video
Thanks!
I appreciate this video. I'll be looking at the Acura since it's nicer. Other than the rear of the Accord, I like that also but Acura wins for me.
The TLX seems to be a popular pick here, we see a lot of newer ones on the road.
Great video as always! I’ve had my 2015 TLX for 3 years now, and still debate if I made the right pick over a 6 speed accord sport....Honda makes great cars and the accord is still a terrific bang for buck. The 2.0T sport in the current generation is a slightly detuned Type R powerplant, in one of the best midsize sedan chassis regardless of price...IMO
We've heard great things about the 2.0L engine in the Accord, we're looking forward to try it out for the 2019 model, since there's little point in us doing an episode on this years now that we've done the 1.5L.
How the reliability has been on 2015 TLX?
Amardeep Singh the reliability has been great, only regular maintenance. A massive improvement over the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee that I had previously that was constantly in the shop for repairs.
Just bought a 2019 accord yesterday and let me tell you that little engine is fast af for being a 1.5 turbo make a difference.
No kidding! The 2.0L engine offered in the Accord is also really quick.
Great comparison. I just traded in my 2017 Acura TLX 2.4L for a 2018 Audi A4 Premium Plus FWD. The difference in build quality, handling, power (even though the Audi has LESS hp than the TLX) and interior materials finally made me understand why the TLX isn't even always included in sport sedan comparisons with the German brands. The Audi makes me feel like I stepped up from a 'nice' Honda Accord to a real luxury sport sedan. Really hoping that Honda figures out how to truly differentiate their upmarket division products to feel and (maybe just as importantly) be perceived as part of a true luxury brand.
We're hoping so too, right now they're in this weird limbo. Infiniti seems to be stepping up their game, mostly with their sedans/coupés offering more to distinguish themselves from other Nissans, so Honda is going to need to do something too.
@@PRNTestDrive Honda needs to buy same transmissions what Toyota gets...from some company I forgot the name of that shit
How's audi after 4 yeara?
@@victorg2700 traded in the A4 for a Q5, have had it for almost 4 years - no problems at all. Great cars.
It's 5 years later, tell us all about the repair bills on that pos Audi 😂
How do you do the strobe effect in the headlights?
Not by choice unfortunately, essentially the LED lights aren't continuously lit like a traditional halogen bulb, so our camera's shutter ends up creating that effect as the frame rate isn't quite in sync with the lights. My understanding is the Canon 5D MKIV is one of the few non-professional cameras that can reduce/eliminate LED light strobe.
Why would you not compare the 2L turbo accord vs the TLX? Really not fair. I love how you say the TLX navagation is standard for the segment as you compare it to a Q60. What about a Buick Regal GS, or Kia Stinger?
We didn’t use the 2.0L Accord because we didn’t have it, Honda gave us the 1.5L and we do what we can with what we’re given. Kia Stinger isn’t a premium car, and Buick certainly has a slightly more updated nav system, but most people looking at Acura are comparing directly with Infiniti.
Perpetual Radio Networks this answer is wrong on so many levels I'm just going to unsubscribe and leave it at that. Thanks
Right then.. you understand that we book vehicles through the press fleet and are given access to vehicles based on availability. We're not MotorTrend, we can't demand specific vehicles from the manufacturers in order to film the 'perfect' episode. I'd love to know what you feel is wrong about our answer, considering it's opinion based. Also, don't edit your comment after we've replied to it, you said the Stinger was premium when we replied, and changed it after.
I need to decide what to buy Acura or Honda what do you think ?
Personally I'd just go with the Accord, the tech is slightly better on it and the cost works out unless you absolutely need AWD out of a vehicle. We're expecting to see a complete refresh for the TLX within the next 12 months.
Could have compare the TLX to the Accord 2.0T because of similar pricing. I would love the Accord 2.0T.
How do you review the top of the line accord with a 4 cylinder TLX with tech package. It would be more credible if you reviewed the 1.8 cvt model Accord.
That vehicle doesn’t exist in Canada. The only other option for the Accord here is a 2.0L with a 10 speed auto. Also this was the only car Honda Canada would give us.
Perpetual Radio Networks ok, that makes sense, but why not pull out an A spec or V6 SH-AWD with Advance package to compare both brands highest offerings.
I doubt many are cross-shopping a $36,000 Accord and a $55,000 TLX, most I think want the premium brand on a consumer budget. This Showdown takes two vehicles with similar prices and performance, not to mention both are front whee drive. If we took a V6 AWD TLX we’d have a hundred comments complaining about it.
Perpetual Radio Networks that right there is the main point. You don’t cross shop and Acura with a Honda. That would be like cross shopping a BMW with Hyundai. Same theory.
Murdered the Tlx Mats. Lol
Thanks for the great video. First of its kind comparing the TLX to the new Accord. I feel that you should have compared the 2.0T of the Accord to the TLX. They are more similar in terms of price point. Also the fuel economy of TLX is significantly lower than the 1.5T - as much as 7mpg. Plus the TLX requires premium gas, while Accord runs on regular. That being said, the TLX looks far better from the outside and even with it's dated interior feels more premium than the Accord. Also the 2.4L engine with the 8 speed DCT is a gem. Feels much quicker than it actually is.
Those are certainly good points, and we agree the 2.0L Accord would have been closer in price and power to the TLX we chose, but unfortunately we take the cars we can get and film the episodes around them.
I totally understand. It is still a relevant comparison for an average buyer who is satisfied by the base engines of both cars. Once again, great job with the video. Do appreciate it, please keep up the good work and hopefully look forward to many more car reviews from you guys.
Thanks! We're hoping to be able to expand significantly this year with the cars we're able to feature.
You should at least have mentioned there is a 2.0...You said it once barely towards the end, but the way you present these two cars come across very deceptive or misleading. You don't even mention horsepower numbers. This is my first time on your channel, but I found it lacking.
Horsepower numbers are in the specs screen at the start. Also, we go into more detail on the 2.0L Accord in our episode of TestDrive Spotlight on the Accord. Our Showdown episodes focus on the two specific cars featured in the video, and serve as a compliment to the information we provide in a Spotlight. I’m very sorry you feel this way about our episode, but the reality is we include as much as we can on the vehicles we compare in order to cover what we can without droning on and boring viewers.
Honda Accord all Day!
Slow asf to the TLX
Yeah they need to update the Acura interior dash design that is all the way back from the 2009 gens. Compare those interiors say from a 2009 Acura TSX or TL and your interiors there is a lot of similar identifiers.
I believe Acura is planning a TLX update for 2020, definitely needed.
Just purchased the 2.0 touring with the ten speed tranny. No doubt t it would smoke the Acura like a cheap cigar. I passed on the 17 because of the stupid infotainment duplication. Wasn't sure about the 2.0T but I was wrong, very wrong. This engine has it in every way. Loving the interior HUD and leather interior.
At $ 32K out the door there's not many cars out there to compete with rhis car. Not Camry by far, not the base IS 300, not mazda, etc...
The 2.0L Accord is really quick, we've seen it perform miracles on the drag strip in stock setup.
How did you manage to get the 2.0 touring with 10 speed at $32K out the door ?
Ya how because I have enough to buy it full price for the 2019 model
erm the 2.0 touring cost way more than the base tlx. You can get the base tlx with v6 sh-awd for the price of the 2.0 touring.
I have a touring version 9th gen accord, I find the driver seat to be significantly less comfortable then the 2018 aspec tlx. I dread driving more then 1/2hr in my accord even with added seat support.😟
That's definitely a bummer to hear! We did like the TLX's seat on this car, but the 2018 Accord should have new seats, so maybe they've made improvements over the one you've got.
I’ve been looking at a 2015 Acura TLX should I do it !!!?
They're nice cars, especially in the used market!
My vote, the Accord Touring 2.0T tops the base TLX. BUT, the TLX with the V6 and at minimum, the tech package is on par with the Accord Touring 2.0T. As far as price goes, it's all about incentives. I'm pretty confident that you should be able to find the TLX V6 Tech for the same or lower price as the Accord. Accord has that higher volume holding that price closer to MSRP. The TLX has the foam filled, triple sealed door, ELS Audio, and the AWS over having the cooled seats, remote start and HUD. Whats important to the buyer is what they should go with. Me, I like the sport and the very quite comfy ride of the TLX, and the pipe stitched seats in the TLX makes you feel very nice.
I'm a Honda fan boy, so I'm a bit biased here....
Those are certainly all great points. It ultimately comes down to what buyers want, which is why we like doing episodes like this, it gives us a chance to show what the differences are for two similar vehicles. Often it's hard comparing two cars by switching between two different videos. We're always going to have a soft spot for Honda, we grew up with them!
I decided I’m gonna save myself about 10Gs over the TLX! Going for the new CRV LX 2.4, no Turbo. Plus I’ll get AWD, and room for the pooch.
...and no need for premium gas!
Very nice! The fuel type is definitely a big plus, it's something we're talking about with the vehicle we're publishing on Monday. Sometimes buyers forget that the premium/luxury cars need it.
I absalutey love my TLX. The front grill & headlights are beautiful. The accord is still nice, but the TLX has a much nicer front grill. Acura really stepped it up with the new grill. It’s seriously one of my favorite parts of the car. I also upgraded the sound system so the bass in my car sounds amazing. It was already great before, but even better now. The only thing I wish was differnt would be the back tail lights. I had an 04 TSX before I got the 2019 TLX & liked the back lights better on my TSX. However, the newer TLX (2021) back lights look nice.
Thanks for sharing, enjoy yours!
Agreed but the accord has a WAY better interior
Good review. Changed to like. Tlx is smaller and more conservative but road noise is lower than accord. I think the Acura base radio with 7 speakers sounds better than the 2020 accord exl with 10 speakers. Refined driving experience might go to tlx but accord is more modern and has more features
We've got the updated TLX booked at the end of December, I'm looking forward to see how they've improved it since we drove this one briefly.
I wish you would compare the 2.0 touring 10 speed automatic instead.
As we mentioned in the description and the pinned comment, we didn't have a choice when booking this Accord through Honda Canada. It's what they gave us.
went to the dealer, saw 2 car, going home with the accord 2.0t. No regret at all.
Glad to hear it, congrats on the purchase!
Exterior ? Acura..
Interior ? Honda..
Decision? Acura because its more luxuries exterior and i need my car looking good. Also, insurance is lower on Acuras.
Why is it lower if i may ask?
Yes, pls tell us why you say its lower. I thought it was the other way around
@@KK-itiswell my 2012 3.5 tl is fully covered for 700$ per year, they are very cheap for some reason. My ex car was a 2011 corolla and it was 1000$ lmao.
Must be an error, acura interiors looks so 2008, maybe you write 2018 instead of 2008? The front end design seems heavy but overall more elegant than accord.
Haha! We noted that in our tour, the interior does feel dated, especially the navigation software. I forget if we kept it in, but it felt a lot like the 2003 Maserati's nav system.
Other than awd, the Accord is better than the tlx in every single way possible.
We'd definitely take the Accord over a fully loaded P-AWC TLX, but the 4 wheel steering certainly is fun. We're in a climate where AWD is king though, so that helps make the Acura's top-end offerings stand out.
Agreed. And can you believe some people think that the Accord can't even compare to the Acura? Like you said, it wins in all categories. They should've compared the 2.0t to the Acura though. The price is more similar (still not as much as the Acura) but has way more features. That probably would've made Acura look too bad.
RS7JR I thought the same thing for the price of a tech tlx u can get a fully loaded accord with 252hp, adaptive dampers and heads up display, with 19 inch rims and most of all more interior space
Well I'm a lover of Both...
Fadic4 aside from realiblility which is what most Honda buyers want
the only question is how come you don't use the honda accord 2.0t when you compare cars, 2l vs 2+l
Check our pinned comment, the 1.5L engine is A) the one Honda gave us, so we had no choice to use it, and B) the 2.0L engine produces almost 50+ horsepower over the Acura, whereas this comparison the Acura only producers 14+ horsepower.
Perpetual Radio Networks thank you for the response and the clarification and I really like the videos as it helped me make a choice on the car to get
Glad to hear it! That's always our goal for these episodes, is to help people make their decision on what to buy!
Ok front accord + tlx a spec back = perfect exterior car im looking for.. now v6 sh-awd 300hp+ manual.. it would be the most perfect car I ever wish
It feels like we're going to be seeing a new TLX pretty soon, maybe it'll be more along those lines.
Totally agreed about exterior. Front from Honda, back from Acura. But about Accura's interior... It's so soulless. It's not classic enough and not modern enough. Stuck in the middle and that made it pretty faceless. I would love if Acura had more classy interior. Like Rover 75 had with those wood elements perfectly balanced with leather elements. With interior like that and exterior with front from Honda and back from Acura, it would be my dream car. Now it's too average to be luxury in my humble opinion.
🤔As I love stick shifts here’s my only dilemma:
I drove both and somehow I just think that the Accord with a stick shift is more fun to drive...
I could afford either one. Just don’t know which way to go...🤔
Accord
Just got one ...I agree
As a carguy. I would get a Accord with a manual transmission
I've owned the v6tlx base and I'm getting rid of it for the 2.0T manual. I think the 2.0 is a gigantic difference from the 1.5. The 1.5 is not for enthusiasts...the tlx had its bonuses like the handling (although it felt very heavy), the pick up and power (although they could have added another 10 to 15 ponies).....but the infortainment and dash is extremely outdated the transmission was a grinding jumpy jerking nightmare, does not offer fog lights unless you upgraded to a whole nother unnecessary package as opposed to the previous TSX models which had standard fog lights..they offer no manual and have only buttons for the v6, which becomes a pet peeve after a year...I'm glad they added the exposed exhausts again, although they're faux tips but they didn't add any power to its new refinements.
The Accord is going to be much more fun and fresher and modifiable especially offering that stick shift transmission. Acura is losing it's enthusiast fan base, I've always been a Acura/Honda fan but Honda is doing better work for the price its a better option in many ways.
It's definitely true that Acura is losing, if not already lost the enthusiast buyers. They've all moved on while Acura seems to focus on the type of buyers who'd also look at the Lexus ES 350 or RX 350.
What year TLX do you have? Experienced the same transmission issues with my 2018.
Your crazy
@@lookalike6270 how many miles were on your TLX when it started having transmission issues?
That grill on the Acura is enormous
I think it got bigger on the 2019 A-Spec.
Power Folding mirrors do come on the Accord Touring trim
3.5 TLX the only choice, take the malibu look alike 2.0 turbo back to the factory!!!!
Acura’s interior is at least 10 years old. Cannot even compare to the Germans... Exterior is nice though...Was a great comparison, thank you!
Glad you liked it, thanks!
Maybe in Hungary ppl are hungry for stupid Benz and BMW, but here in U.S. we drive a lot and we DO CARE ABOUT RELIABILITY!!
Germans fall apart after 5 years ,Acura ,Honda run almost for ever with less maintainence
They fixed it now :)
@@DylanandJazi true:))
Hey trade in 2013 tsx for 2018 tsx
Is a 2015 Acura tlx with 140,000 miles on it for 12,000 worth getting?
Could be, seems like a good deal. When it comes to Acura I don't have any major worries about reliability.
So why not match it up to a 2.0 touring?
Please read the pinned comment
I would love to see a comparison between the Accord Touring 2.0T and the TLX V6 Advance (Elite in CA).
We'll see if we can make something happen! We do have a TLX coming on our press fleet but it will be at the end of summer before we can book it.
This is not a fair comparison but it will help people understand why TLX is a real luxury car
The idea of the video is to show what the difference is between the two brands, not to find out which is better.
white looks nice on the tlx.
It seems to be the most popular colour also, we usually see these newer ones in white.
You did not mention that the Acura requires premium fuel which to me is a big negative because the Accord runs just fine on regular fuel. It is a negative because not only are you paying 10k more for the Acura, you'll also be paying for the more expensive premium fuel for as long as you own the Acura. That's not peanuts.
That's a great point, and because of your comment I've made sure to mention that with the 2021 Acura TLX episode we're currently working on. Thanks!
Comparig the 1.5L Accord w/ base 4-cyl TLX is a better comparison to do, rather than each model with the bigger engines. Bulk of sales will be the smaller motor. Less than 1/3 of both cars versions will be sold w/ bigger motor versions.
I think you might be the first comment that actually had something positive to say about our choice! You’re absolutely right that these are the volume sellers, if anything the Acura might have a slightly higher percentage of V6 sales because it’s up market, but we’ve covered extensively in comments why we chose these two.
I would just get the Accord with all of the options or just get a certified TLX.
Either would work! The Accord certainly has a lot going for it, we really like it.
10th Generation Accord is built off the Civic Platform
1st Generation TLX is built using the 9th Generation Accord Platform
Wait Accord has cooled seats? What trim??
The Touring model, like this one, comes with front ventilated seats.
You opted for the Touring spec Accord but went for the 1.5T engine to do a comparo with the more expensive Acura? Why? And the Acura you said had a 2.4L engine but the images in the vid were the A-Spec....which has a V6. The new Accord is so good the base model of either the TLX, 3 Series, A4 etc cant hang with a loaded Accord Touring.....which goes for the same money. Good comparo but you had to handicap it to save the TLX.
I didn’t ‘opt’ for anything. We reached out to Honda to get access to their press fleet, they gave us this Accord as a ‘trial’ to make sure we aren’t going to trash it around. Also no V6 engines were shown in this video, we used video provided by Honda near the end to show the A-Spec trim but that was exterior footage.
Accord hands down. But i would go Accord Sport 2.0T.
So would we, we've raced against one on the drag strip and know how quick they are stock!
K24 with that sweet 8 spd dct is a winner, winner!
why is there no acrua in Australia. It’s so beautiful!
Honda doesn't sell a Hondafied version of this? In the 90s and early 2000s all the Acuras we had here were just Euro-Spec Accords.
@@PRNTestDrive Honda killed the Accord Euro (also known as Spirior and Inspire in China) between 2015 -2018. The only remnant of the Euro/Spirior/Inspire is the Acura TLX which sells in 5 countries. Honda brought the Inspire back from the dead in China only to kill it again by making it a rebadged standard Accord. I drive a 2012 8th-gen Accord Euro and love it! I would have continued buying Euro's or the Acura TLX but Honda would rather market Civics. I'm switching to the V6 Toyota Camry next.
Tlx overall is the best I love it and at least it dosent look like an suv which the accord has now which looks super ugly and the TLX looks nice as always can't wait to get my 19 Acura TLX A-spec
We're hoping we can get the chance to review the A-Spec down the road!
Awesome information
Thanks, we're glad you liked it!
I actually have none of these. I have a Honda Accord 2017 , the last accord with a v6 and I gotta say that the 2017 model is honestly the same as the Acura tlx in 2018. So I think Acura would be a year behind in tech,
Except for the back, the Accord looks better in my opinion. Also the 2.0t is just as fast as the Tlx v6 not even to say that 2.4 that he was driving.
The 2.0L Accord is silly in terms of quickness, I've seen it in action and was impressed with how quick that car is.
TLX is nice but I wish it had the back end of the 4th gen TL 09-14. That would have been sick imo
That generation TL was pretty great, we'd love to feature one down the road.
Perpetual Radio Networks please do
Wish Acura offered a manual like they used to have.
Genesis seems to be the only manufacturer offering any manuals in the premium/luxury segment these days. I believe even BMW is only adding a manual option for the 2 series for 2019.
Why doesn’t Acura make a luxury coupe or convertible?
That's a great question, I suppose the NSX is the closest modern vehicle we'll see in that sort of segment, but I suppose they're following the rest of the premium segment, Lexus, Infiniti, and Buick don't offer any convertibles, Lexus has the RC and LC coupés, and Infiniti with the Q60, so there's certainly a market for an Acura coupé, but I doubt the'll make one now that the Accord coupe is dead.
Not a fan of Acura vehicles. Nice to see the comparison though. I just don't understand why brands allow their lesser tier cars to be better than their luxury counterparts. Shouldn't buying an Acura give more incentive than just the Acura symbol which isn't even that special BECAUSE they aren't that different from a Honda? I'm new in the car interest so maybe there's a reason or a formula to why they bother. Thanks for the video guys
I think you're right, the Acuras should get updated first to give buyers an incentive to get into them. We always felt Audi and VW had the right formula, Audi would get all the fun designs and tech, and 5-8 years later we'd see it trickle down to the VW cars.
Try accord 2021 touring 2.0 automatic shifter 10 speed gearbox
Good Year Eagle LS2 tires are NOT sport tires they are Grand Touring tires. I had to upgrade the tires on my TLX they were terrible.
Good to know!
I believe the prelude was the first to have 4 wheel steering
I believe that's correct, the first production consumer vehicle at least. The CB7 Honda Accord (which we owned and featured) had the same type of 4WS system for Euro/Japanese market vehicles.
Great review ! ....Always wonder if its worth it to upgrade my Honda Accord to an Acura ...??? I don't think it is ! Acura is just not worth the extra money !
Especially not right now, if Acura comes out with an all-new TLX for the 2020 model year we might have something serious to upgrade to, but for now the TLX is lagging behind the other premium compact executive sedans such as the Infiniti Q50s, Buick Regal, and Lexus IS.
Buick is in trouble, but Acura has no concise goal. You might not agree, and that’s ok.
My accord sport is sweet!!!
The new one definitely has a lot going for it!
I like TLX but i love Accord I have 2011 accord se 95400 mil and i paid just for oil change and brakes. runs new. i like the 2.0sport #1
Glad to hear it!
Personally the TLX is best in its 3.5L V6 with SH-AWD in A-spec trim. It undercuts the Q50 3.0t AWD and IS350 F-sport and makes the car special. In TLX 2.4L guise, the Accord 2.0T Sport makes more financial sense and is even faster.
The Accord definitely has a lot going for it. We haven't had a chance to try out the Infiniti Q50 yet, I believe it's the only vehicle on the press fleet out here, so we'll see if we can make it happen!
You want a honda sedan with All wheel drive, go for the TLX.
Pretty much! Or All-Wheel Steering if you live in a climate where AWD doesn’t make a difference.
Those new Accords are real nice but I would get the tlx I have owned 2 Acura rl's a 99 that I still have and had a 05 rl
Very nice! We always appreciated the RLs in Acura's lineup, we're hoping to be able to find some in good shape to feature on this show.
Tellie Smith keep those, this new one is shit in comparison
Why is your touring a 1.5? Touring engine is a 2.0 standard. That’s why touring badge is issued to the car. Did you have a 1.5 option accord sport with wood grain? This review is not an exact match up. Accord touring has a 10 speed as standard or hybrid 2 motor cvt.
Perhaps in your market that is the case, but here in Canada Honda offers the Touring with either engine.
Your correct i did not know you guys were Canada based with the accord. Is it a better option for your country? Or do you think you deserve better?
Deserve better in what way? It sounds like we have more choice here, get the trim you want up to Touring, and the engine/transmission combo that works best for the buyer. The 2.0L with the 10-speed automatic is available here.
Based on 1 hour drive?
I won't lie to you, that's how this unfortunately works whenever we work with a dealership in order to film a car. It's not ideal, which is why we try our best to get the vehicles from the press fleets first, like we did last week with our Showdown on the 2019 Infiniti Q50S & Genesis G70. However any other UA-camrs who work with dealerships to film cars will have the same limited amount of time on the road with them, and there are some very large channels that specialize on that sort of content.
