2018 Honda Accord 2.0T Review - America's best sedan?

  • In the epic battle between Toyota and Honda the stakes couldn't be higher (and the final score couldn't be closer) than in the Camry vs Accord fight. For 2018 both companies completely redesigned their mid-sized sedans with a keen eye on the shifting realities of the modern sedan shopper. With this generation of Accord, Honda decided to sharpen their claws with a 2.0L turbo borrowed from their hot-hatch Civic Type R, an all-new 10-speed automatic transmission, more LEDs than Times Square and some adaptive suspension technology borrowed from luxury brands. The result is quite simply the best Accord ever produced. Period. But does that mean it beats the all-new Camry? Yes and no.

    Alex is truly a brilliant auto journalist. You won't find anyone else analyzing in detail the Accord & Camry like others comparing the Camaro & Mustang. And the child-seat is back!

    • @michaelschneider-
      @michaelschneider- 6 років тому +1

      +1. .. A recent vehicle review showed Herr Alex actually securing a child seat and identifying each of that vehicles anchor locations. .. "The Devil is in the details". .. Damn good review! .. While viewing, this dug up fond memories when struggling to install a Graco baby seat in the rear seat position of my wifes 2wk old MY01 Audi S4 sedan. .. The Frau being 5' 4" in height, positions the drivers seat damn near 98% in its forward position, still there was minimal-to-zero rear seat location for a rear facing-style infant baby seat arrangement. .. Memory lane.

    Your reviews are amazing. You approach every car in a level headed and realistic manner. I watched this one because I want an accord and I have been tempted by the Camry. My wife wants a crv or Subaru, I think awd is overrated. I owned a pilot and a 4Runner with it and think it’s not as good as safe driving. I think your comments on cars are accurate. I am a little surprised at everyone (not just you) complaining about accord seat comfort. I really like that I can push the seat down and back and almost be semi reclined.

    Excellent review, as usual Alex! I'm curious if you felt the lowered rear of the greenhouse adversely affected rearward visibility. I rely on the quick, confident rear glance in either direction, especially for congested lane changes (L.A. 5, 405, 210) so much. Also, I've discounted Adaptive Suspension up until now, but your review has me rethinking that. (again sections of these L.A. freeways are quite 3rd World). Thanks for being the best!

    Straight up, your videos are incredible for the comparison heavy shopper in a given model / market segment. Very well done. The Accord really does seem like the value leader. I'm not entirely keen on the messy front end with the broken up grill and obvious sensor cluster dead center in the radiator air scoop. At that price point, the Sport 1.5L seems like a Civic killer considering how much more room is available, the less controversial design and the included features.

      I looked at a Stinger GT2 today. Pretty impressive but the rear seat legroom wasn’t near as much and the interior was nice but didn’t seem appreciably nicer IMO. Performance goes hands down to the Stinger, overall though I think the Accord would be a much nicer car on a day to day basis. Especially if you use the rear seats much.

    There's a couple things I wouldn't mind seeing in future videos.
    1. Where are the windshield washer sprayers located? Are they easy to keep free of snow/ice? The reason I mention this, is because I live in Canada and some cars actually have sprayers located in hard to reach locations that can often be covered in snow.
    2. How do the images from the reverse camera come across? Are they augmented? How badly are they fish-eyed? How clear is the picture?
    Keep up the great work :)

    Honda needs to make a rear wheel drive sedan to handle all that torque.

      The above is true in all but reliability, and reliability is a huge selling point in the US.

      mountainhobo the Camry has been overall relatively unchanged for the last 17 years just like my 2008 Tacoma and the "all new" 2016 Tacoma or "all new" 2014 tundra. This new Camry is all new for once so the real test is now on future reliability.

      @Just-a-mazin 33 -- True, but considering how conservative Toyota is with the changes, I probably wouldn't lose too much sleep over it. Still, there are two changes I want Toyota to make before I buy the next Camry (neither of which will happen): (1) Get rid of the center console. I care more about driver's position and room for my knee rather than yet another place to put an oversized phone; and (2) Give me a manual transmission. I don't care how many times I hear reviewers talk about how great the latest automatics are -- they sap all life out of cars like Camry.

      Hasty One The entire platform is new to the camry including the engines. With that being said, technically the "new" engines are the oldest part of the Camry considering they're just retuned versions of the old engines. The 3.5 made 306hp in the 2006 Lexus IS350.

      t c then how do you explain Camry being the best selling car for decade despite being an average performer for most of that time. The 2018 is the first Camry is years that has it all.
      After all Chevy gives huge discount in Malibu's and it's never sold like the Camry.

    Always putting our great content. I love the new Accord's look. But I don't like how the Honda Sensing radar isn't hidden in the Honda logo like it is on the new Honda Clarity, even though that's based on the previous generation Accord. Doesn't add up. But very good features for a reasonable price, Honda is always coming out ahead.

      Jesse Seibert I agree. It would have looked a little better in that location if they added some more dark trim around that area. It just sticks out like a sore thumb without it.

    i keep looking at videos about the accord and quite frankly find no compelling reason to trade in my 2008 exl which is still running strong with the higher horsepower exl 2.4 (vs a standard 2.4--two different engine codes). the 2.0 liter turbo with manual or ten speed auto is the only one vaguely interesting. thanks, great work!

    The scales that Alex uses are useful even though I sometimes disagree on the rating... but the in depth breakdown engine comparisons are probably the best on the interwebs

    Hey, there is actually a difference on cabin noise between this model and the 2.0 Touring one. Touring is more quite that's actually very noticeable when I test drove it.

    @Alex, I really enjoy your reviews.. but I am curious about one thing in this video.. The rear seat headroom is not good, you cannot go all the way back.. but still you rated 9/10.. May I please know the reason for high rating ?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  6 років тому

      Legroom is enormous and that helps. Also, ratings are within the same segment so vs other mainstream midsized sedans the Accord is still good because rear headroom is shrinking in the competition as well.

    Alex.. I've been following you for a long time, and I am surprised by how little excitement you have for this new Accord. It's a tick faster than the Camry but the adaptive suspension in the Touring model really takes it up a whole level, in my opinion. The infotainment in the Camry was downright awful, the interior was busy and while the V6 was excellent, it was (in Canada) almsot $1500 more than the better-equipped Accord. The only feature the Camry had that I would have really wanted was the around-view camera, but I'll take the adaptive dampers (and parking sensors) in the Accord any day!

    When you say some car companies are giving up on the midsize segment you are referring to fiat Chrysler. Are you referring to any other company besides them?

    We need the 2020 or 2021 review from Alex for the Accord 2.0T now; they have apparently adjusted the throttle response in addition to the refresh fascia

      Jee Vang V6 will always be better than these tiny 4 cylinders with small turbos. They sound like shit, don't rev as high, have horrible response compared to an NA engine, and the despite what the EPA says, the real world gas mileage really isn't much better. So there's not really any advantages
