    A few of things.
    1. The cutting board is to protect the knife more than the counters. The hard surface of the counter bends the edge of the blade over making the knife dull.
    2. A dull knife is far more dangerous than a sharp one. With a dull knife you use much more force to make the cut. You force down trying to push the knife through what you are cutting. With a properly sharp knife you are gliding it through the material.
    3. With a Sloppy Joe the peppers and the onion should blend seamlessly into the meat. To do this you need a much finer dice on the onion and peppers.
    4. Cook the peppers and onions with the meat so that they become soft and meld into the dish.
    5. English mustard is not a good substitute for American yellow mustard or Dijon mustard. It has a much sharper and harsher flavor.
    6. While the sauces for Sloppy Joes changes based on where in the country you are, the sauce is generally closer to a weak tomato based BBQ sauce than anything else. A down and dirty version is ketchup, mustard, wash-your-sister sauce, garlic powder, salt and pepper as needed.
Good job on your first attempt at making them. Experimentation is the key.

I also don't know how sweet ketchup is in other countries. Ketchup in the US has a tangy sweetness that adds overall sweetness to the sandwich, kind of like a BBQ sauce would, like you mentioned. I also don't know if I've used mustard in sloppy joes. If I have, I've used it sparingly.

Ketchup is not the same as tomato sauce. In fact you would do better to use tomato paste for sloppy joes. In the US, we are lucky to have Sloppy Joe mixes available. No need to mix spices or ingredients. I personally have never seen anyone put mustard in Sloppy Joes, but i'm sure someone has. Look for another recipe, Sloppy Joes are great sandwiches.

Back in 1987 I went to New Jersey and had a sloppy Joe for the first time and I was hooked on them from that point. Coming back to Ireland was heartbreaking because nobody here had heard of a sloppy Joe never mind had a recipe. Around 2002 I was able to find a pre-made and frozen sloppy Joe from a well known supermarket but they disappeared after a few months and never came back. I struggled to find a recipe so I decided to try making my own but being the guy that I am I don’t use measurements and just go with the flow. Personally I brown the mince beef in 1 pan and cook veg in a separate pan then combine when both are cooked. I then add about 500ml of passata (puréed tomato sauce), and then about 250ml of sweet bbq sauce, 2 tablespoons of mustard and 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce and cook for a few minutes until the sauce thickens a little bit and Bob’s your uncle. If the meat and sauce doesn’t spill out of the burger bun when you bite into it then your Joe isn’t sloppy enough. The measurements given are rough estimates as I usually just taste test and add a little of what’s needed. It’s not a perfect recipe and probably Americans may say it’s not authentic but the flavour hits just like the original I had in 1987. Give it a go, you may like it 👍🏻

Actually it has two common meanings here in the U.S. The tomato based pasta sauces and the tomato sauce used in general cooking which is somewhere between tomato juice and tomato paste. Depending on exactly what taste you’re going for I suppose you could make ketchup, pasta sauce or tomato sauce work in a sloppy joe.

This is almost a sacrilege here in the states, but we use it in a pinch if we are in a real hurry to make these. You may have it in the grocery store, but look for something called either "Manwich" or something I will use instead because it is more of a blank slate is something called "meatloaf sauce" and it is made by a brand called "Hunts." It doesn't have as many seasonings as Manwich does, so it is easier to use as a base sauce if you are in a real hurry. They both come in cans, and anything you don't use of the sauce can be saved and you can make all kinds of thicker dipping sauces with it. Typically, we will make our own seasoning mix from scratch based on preference, but it does take longer, so the canned versions I mentioned will keep for a while in the pantry, and you can tweak them slightly if you are in a real rush.

  • @Marcel_Audubon

we usually use French's mustard for sloppy joes (the bright yellow stuff) it's a milder than what you're using. In fact, I knew you had a mustard problem when you coughed taking the first bite! haha! but you're right, it's all about experimenting and adjusting. I like to use some ketchup (because it has sugar and vinegar in it) and some tomato sauce (what you called puree) combined.
We all ate this at school growing up, but you don't have that childhood benchmark that you must slavishly compare it to like we do, so you're at an advantage there!!

You can't use English mustard as a 1 to 1 substitute for Dijon mustard. Dijon mustard is mild and sweet. If you can't find Dijon a good alternate is honey mustard or just a plain American mustard. With any substitutions you should always put less then add more to taste.

There's as many variations as people who make it probably! I use canned tomato sauce NOT ketchup, a sauteed onion, garlic powder, paprika, soy sauce NOT Worcester, a molasses heavy barbecue sauce, a tiny bit of instant coffee, and Dijon mustard. Toast bread, lots of Hellman's and depending on my mood I add a little cheese and a little relish. I have used different sauce and adapted to taste from there. If you use the Italian style tomato sauce, it would probably remind you of a meatball sub, so olives and spinach are good. I knew someone who added other vegetables like carrots to the sauce. Google more recipes and make it your own 😊. Hopefully that makes sense, I'm sleepy.

When we say "toasted buns", we mean puttong the cut side down on a hot pan until it's golden brown. You can butter it if you like, for better cooking. If you're using flat bread, you can put it in a toaster. Also, chopping the veg into smaller chunks would be better. I've not had mustard in a sloppy joe before. Ketchup is different than tomato sauce. In my opinion, it was way too much mustard, usually 1/2 teaspoon or less is enough unless you really like mustard. (I use 1/2 teaspoon of dry mustard.) Did you add salt & pepper to ground beef when it was cooking? (Our ground beef has great flavor before adding anything other than salt & pepper, so I don't know how flavorful yours is.) I make sloppy joes a bit differently & also add a bit of brown sugar & 1 teaspoon of white vinegar & simmer it longer.

What we American's call "tomato sauce" is probably closest to passata except that tomato sauce has some seasonings in it such as salt, garlic, onion, etc. But, ketchup was a good call since if we make sloppy joes with tomato sauce, we tend to add in some sugar to make it sweet and a bit of vinegar for some tang. I've always got to pause when I read UK recipes that call for tomato products to figure out exactly what I need to use since we have different names for essentially the same thing.

Hey there Northern California here all I will say is I would have let it simmer some more it's suppose to be juicy but sticky like more of a hearty meat sauce and if juice and meat ain't flopping out the sides its not a sloppy joe, but still looks good, I'd add a bit of cheese to the top. Great Job though and hey if you like it who cares what others say

P.S. Americans would have something with that like fries or tater tots. Some people add other things to the sandwich or even put a slice of American cheese on it. The roll doesn't always have to be toasted either...and there are many types of bread as well

Tomato sauce is not the same as ketchup. Here in the states it comes in a small can. Frankly I prefer tomato paste and water. Cook the onions snd pepper with the hamburger. Needs garlic too

Try it again - use the recipe
    Servings: 4 servings
    1 small onion, finely chopped
1/2 small green bell pepper, seeded and finely diced
    1 Tbsp worcestershire sauce
    1 1/2 tsp yellow mustard
    1 Tbsp brown sugar
    15 oz can tomato sauce
1 lb lean ground beef, 85%-90% lean
    1 Tbsp olive oil
½ tsp salt, or to taste
¼ tsp ground black pepper, or to taste
    3 garlic cloves, minced
1/4 cup water, optional, or added to desired consistency
4 hamburger buns, toasted if desired
Cook ModePrevent your screen from going dark
    Instructions
Finely chop the onion. Seed and finely dice the green pepper.
In a bowl, combine the Worcestershire sauce, mustard, brown sugar, and tomato sauce.
Place a large skillet or dutch oven over medium/high heat. Add olive oil and ground beef. Saute the beef for about 5 minutes until cooked through and no longer pink, breaking it up with a spatula. Season with salt and pepper and add in the diced peppers and onion. Cook another 5 minutes until the veggies are tender and beef is browned.
Add the minced garlic and saute 30 seconds until fragrant, stirring constantly. Add in the sauce and bring to a light boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for about 10-15 minutes or until thickened to your liking. Season to taste with salt and pepper and add water if you prefer a looser consistency. Serve on toasted buns for Sloppy Joe Sandwiches.

Anytime you cook meat you should season it with salt, pepper maybe a little garlic power, etc so the meat will have flavor. Then you cook the sauce around it. Ketchup is not tomato sauce, maybe you call it tomato puree'? The Dejon Mustard is a brown mustard with is not tart and bitter like the yellow mustard. I think if you tried it with some spices and the right ingredients, you may like it.

Three issues from a bloke who is native to, and still lives across the pond.
First ketchup and tomato sauce may both come from a tomato, but the ingredient differences are substantial enough to change the final flavor. Make your own call, but know the difference.
Second Worcestershire sauce is a popular ingredient across the states, and some of us do know how to pronounce it, but it may have different inflections due to our collective nation's ongoing problems with sharing a common language.
Third these are not referred by all as 'Sloppy Joes'. There was a popular TV series back in the late '60s - early '70s that started the use of another name. The ensemble cast focused around the central family. This family then employed a butler by the name of Mr. French and he called the sandwiches 'Untidy Josephs'.
    Que sera sera.

You did great. You can season the meat more with salt, pepper. garlic salt, onion salt. Instead of chopping the veggies you can use a cheese grader so they almost disappear in the meat and add more flavor. Taste it until you have the perfect taste, some people add bbq sauce and mustard sauce instead of Worcestershire. I think you shouldn't add ketchup. I once added ketchup and this very picky guy said, " did you add ketchup?" I said, " yes." He didn't eat that day. He was a very good experienced cook. I never added ketchup again. I add mayo to my bread and a slice of cheese. Most stores now sell thin plastic cutting boards that look like place mats, I like those better then cutting boards. If you don't add sauce. Only veggies (onions and bell peppers), then add chopped potato, then a can of tomato sauce and water. It becomes a soup and it's called Picadillo in spanish. So good. You can make it spicy with green or red chili sauce, or tomato sauce, also add chicken or beef bullion, salt and pepper.

  • @barbaragonzalez3504
    @barbaragonzalez3504 Місяць тому

You made it wrong. You don't use ketchup. You use tomato sauce that comes in a can or paste ( or tomato paste). You brown the meat and drain the fat off. I replace it with olive oil for moisture and flavor. This is optional. You season the meat with salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder ( I also use powdered chicken or beef bullion). I do not add mustard. Add diced onions and green bell peppers (any color is fine but green gives it a better flavor). Cook well. I add soy sauce and tomato sauce mix and add 4 tablespoons of water, to blend all the flavors together. Cook on low heat until liquid is absorbed. Toast the bread (bun). I add mayo to the bread, but it's optional. Then, spread the filling on the bread, and add a generous amount. It is called sloppy joe because it is meant to be sloppy. It should be coming out of the sides. You can have chips ( what you call crips) on the side with pickles. You can have fries with it, instead of chips.

The original old-time recipe for Sloppy Joes has yellow mustard in it, along with catsup and brown sugar. Its no wonder he didn't like it because it should not have Worcestershire sauce or green peppers in it. Those are not in the original recipe. He's also missing the brown sugar, which makes an amazing difference. And by the way, Manwich is absolutely NOTHING like real Sloppy Joes. It tastes terrible, and I would never buy it!

  • @aaronburdon221

literally never seen anyone chop a bell pepper like that. I always cut it in half, then yank the seeds by hand. P.S. definitely needed more time with the onions and peppers in there. Try cooking them alongside the browning meat. That way their flavour will penetrate the meat and it'll soften them.
