Think about how many of these whistleblowers are well into their 50s, 60s and have worked in this industry for decades. They were loyal, had pride in their work, and worked hard to do the best job they could do. Testifying before congress against the companies they love, is something they never expected. They will be discredited, threatened and made unemployable but they spoke out to prevent tragedies and save lives.

It’s really dysfunctional how corporate charters issued by the federal government have allowed this to happen. The MFs who recently walked away, walk with millions of dollars. The U.S. needs a culture that doesn’t resent the people who design and build. Who generate the wealth from their labor, creativity and service. The psychopath management was even dividing engineering from the assembly line. I heard it in the attitude of an engineer 15 years ago. This comes from management and the financials. Too much power in those areas.

Not for many public and private employers. Alan Greenspan called it worker insecurity. The insecurity keeps unions out, wages suppressed and benefits in a decline. Where applicable this is good for hedge funds. CEOs are compensated well to focus on this intention. Good for investors, terrible for safe planes.

as both an engineer and an MBA I will tell you no, it's not always like this, this happens if garbage human beings make decisions, no matter if engineers or business people. Actually a lot of managers and executives are engineers, just switched into the business part.

    • @DARKORBITPYRO
      @DARKORBITPYRO 24 дні тому +12

@jemand8462 I disagree. Once you bring terms such as return on investment, net present value, budget, and simple payback to an engineering company, you've already lost the plot. Engineers design and a real solution. Engineers with an MBA who have now crossed over and become bean counters demand a value engineered option that looks financially better. You remove the value when you value Engineer. If all Engineers stuck with their profession and didn't bring in the cancer of business graduates into a conversation which they don't belong the market will naturally adjust to the increasing costs by seeing the increased quality in product, operations and value.

You all guys have very valid points to be honest, and I agree with all of your comments. But to be honest; any good engineer understands that Financial goals are a consequence of Customer Expectations met, through excellent Operational Performance by fully capable Manpower. In that exact order. You cannot achieve financial success without the other 3 aspects.
While I believe professionals tend to focus only on financials and short term goals, I also believe most of the management positions within these companies are occupied by people who do not have the necessary experience, knowledge and ethics required.

Embraer really dodged a bullet with that decision. I wish more companies had the wits and wisdom to decline "lucrative deals".
Several car companies went under because they sold out too fast or to the wrong bidder. Years back I heard that Saab had struck a deal to be purchased by GM. Apparently both Volkswagen and BMW were interested but GM got the deal. I anticipated GM would just churn out Saab-badged Opels and fail to find a desired niche for the brand aside from its loyal buyers (who did *not* want a Saab-badged Opel or Pontiac/whatever). As it turned out GM did very little to give the brand free reins but kept the brand alive through assisted breathing. Game over.
Years back I also said that Boeing would be going the same way as GM. For it adapted the same short-sighted business tactics. Looks like I was right seeing this coming...

@@McLarenMercedes Embraer was the Military Brass protege de mien at the time, late 60’s.
It took them the nod to get the bankroll. Many other also runs fell by the way side.
They started with orders from the military and eventually grew into commercial airplanes. Most to cover distances on underserved regions.
They were fitted with all turbo props at that time. No jet Propulsion.
The Xavantes was a two seater single engine for recognizance recognizance missions. Fighter jets were then ordered through Marcel Dassault from France. Now they are supplied by Sweden’s Saab.
The Bandeirantes was a single isle , 20-30 passenger for secondary cities and people’s hauler to far fetched regions such as the Amazon basin.
They eventually built airplanes like Learjet only to leapfrog them towards commercial aviation.

This whole meeting is old news. I noticed they didn't invite a qualified aircraft structural engineer, who looked at the design, only quality engineers that testified that the manufacturing documentation did not explicitly specify the steps that were taken. They do not have the qualifications to testify what might happen or if the changes that the design engineers made and approved by the FAA were appropriate.

Ron Johnson asks about why there's a "discrepancy" between the 2 whistleblowers at around 45:53, one saying it was manufacturing problem, the other saying it was a software problem. The short answer arrives immediately after he asks, then at 50:24 Ed explained how the MCAS related to a manufacturing problem, due to the AOA sensors being improperly wired, and ED just cuts him short!? WTF? Ron, you're given a detailed explanation, and when the most important detail comes, you cut Ed off mid-sentence. That's exactly the problem at Boeing too. Engineers identify specific issues, report it to management, only to be shut down because middle management and executives don't want to meddle in specifics.

Senator Johnson (second Sen. to speak) seems to be backing Boeing pretty hard. I wonder if he has stock in the company or if someone just greased his wheel. He was the only one that interrupted, grilled and contested the whistleblowers instead of listening. If you test any planes; test the ones built 1-3 months before Lion air 2018. Can't trust anything produced now as they know they are under the magnifying glass. We must look at what they already sent out because it seems the "F'it push it out the door" phase has been in full effect for quite some time.

The legal categories or acts under which intentionally manipulating or bypassing certification processes for aviation equipment could be considered a criminal act include:
Fraud: Falsifying documents or misrepresenting the safety standards of aviation equipment with the intent to deceive regulatory authorities or end-users could constitute fraud.
Negligence: If the individual knowingly disregarded safety protocols or failed to ensure that the equipment met required standards, they could be charged with negligence, especially if their actions directly contributed to the crash.
Endangerment: Endangering the safety of aircraft passengers and crew by knowingly using uncertified or improperly certified equipment could lead to charges of endangerment.
Manslaughter or Homicide: In cases where the crash results in loss of life, individuals involved could face charges of manslaughter or homicide if it can be demonstrated that their actions directly contributed to the fatalities.
Regulatory Violations: Deliberately violating aviation regulations and safety standards set forth by regulatory authorities constitutes a criminal offense in many jurisdictions.

How many pre-assembled parts in China does Boeing use in its planes? This type of problem regarding quality issues is almost ubiquitous in the wide spectrum of industrial production or manufacturing and assembling. The reason for this is exclusively one - Profit. However, ignorance and omissions, especially intentional ones, in the aviation industry have alvays unprecedented outcome in the loss of human lives; that is why the regulatory State system must have strict criteria for control and also punishment for non-implementation of safety standards and quality control likewise certification of done product. Unfortunately
corruption is a "tool" that prevents the full application of standards, as well as public information about the real situations

You don’t get to safety until you achieve consistency in quality, and you achieve it over a considerable period of time. One hearing is not going to affect that. If you think it is, then you’re part of the problem.
Boeing needs to face accountability before they will ever change. Upper management needs to be investigated for criminal activity for allowing the number and frequency of quality escapes occurring over the last two decades.

Because of the pandemic they set up a system of failure to meet the profit margin and by doing so they have killed hundreds but they will still turn a profit because the lawsuits will not have affected the bailout structure and set aside money for settlements that they will indeed come to an agreement upon. Nobody will learn any lessons from this except that this is okay as long as there is something major to blame it on.
