📚Description: The School of Rock is a music school for youth and adults that has franchises across the world. While they do share a similar name to a cult classic movie starring Jack Black and do a "similar" thing, they are different. This is the 2nd limited edition guitar they did. Back in 2021, the company sponsored an episode of their limited edition ebony finished Les Paul Special. This time, I bought this one on my own free will because I thought it was cool with the lightning bolt! I had to pre-order in late 2023... just sligthly before I ended up documenting the Thunderstruck SG.

I work for school of rock! Watching this on my break in my lesson room hahaha
I went to School of Rock as a kid, and as an adult I ended up getting hired for the same gigs as the teachers! It's really the best program for kids who want to be professionals since you learn about performing and musician work culture as you get a music education.
You make me smile
I lived around the corner from a SOR. It was neat watching kids playing vintage looking SG’s & specials.
I hope this will follow an SG Tribute version and we can sing:
"This is not the greatest SG in the world No.... this just a Tribute..."
Nice!
Wonder how many people know Tenacious D ?
@@Davidckennedymusic”And he said; “Be you angels?” and we said; “Nay, we are but men! ROCK!”
My friend just brought his over today. We’re both School of Rock students and I thought I was a Gibson hater til I used it.
Another person who's probably never owned or even played a Gibson. Guess what? Epiphones break, Fenders break, Martins break, cheap import acoustics break, Ibanez break. It doesn't matter if it has no head stock angle, or if it has a giant volute-they all will break. Its wood, wood breaks. I've repaired them all. If you drop any guitar on its headstock it will usually break. Just don't be careless and drop them and problem solved.
Why are you watching this channel if you don’t like Gibson? It’s literally 90% Gibson guitars.
I don’t understand why people watch this and then just chime in to talk bad about them? Why? Find something else to watch that’s more suitable for ya. Why waste your time?
If you break the headstock, you glue it and clamp it, just like everybody else has from the edge to Mike Campbell. Rock on!
Well, he does barely more than just Gibson. Also, you clearly knew this was a Gibson before before clicking on it. The title says SG!
Also, what’s up with fanboy? I only said why are you watching something you don’t dig? Gotta be a better way to spend your time, yeah?
@michaelhall736 to be fair, you probably see more people post pictures of a broken gibson headstock rather than another brand simply because it's "gibson". People probably break headstocks on other guitars just as much, they just don't care enough to post a photo because it won't get attention as it's not a Gibson.
The School of Rock movie, along with the songs Smooth and How Far Is Heaven, all combined in the early 2000s to forge an absolute fascination with electric guitar for me when I was around 7 years old that has lasted to this day. The movie in particular is probably the single biggest thing that got me into guitar. I was absolutely hooked from the moment I first saw it. As a kid who was around the same age as the kids in the movie, it was the coolest thing ever. I still credit that movie with basically changing the course of my life. It sparked a passion that I still have to this day. I would’ve loved to see a sequel with Jack Black at some point, but I think that ship has sailed by now. I still watch it anytime I see it on tv or something lol. Great movie.
There's a SOR in Knoxville TN that has an adult program as well. I participated in it for almost a year. Gave me the confidence to get out there and find a band of my own. As an adult that started to get serious about guitar at a later age, I highly recommend it
I like the way you showed the pickup readings. Easy to pause and take note. KeepSmiling Trog
All the school of Rocks I know of in the Chicago suburbs also have an adult program. I’m in it, and I love it! I’ve learned a lot by playing with other adults and at live shows! I’d probably never get a chance to do that otherwise. I wish we had SoR when I was a kid!
That is so good to hear. It should not be age limited. I struggle with ageism on a daily basis applying for IT jobs even though i know I’m probably the best candidate.
The “want someone younger that we can mould into our corporate culture “. Yeah right.
beautiful SG! one of the prettiest ive seen
The apps that work with the amp are pretty damn cool!!! 🤷♂️
I ovoe my Spark Mini, great little practice amp.
I like dot inlays on a Standard, it's just that bit different and I think it looks cool.
Really shocked the neck profile is still original thick? That’s the one thing that helped me as a kid with the slim necks! Hence I learnt on a Ibanez with a Wizard neck!
Gibson, if they really want to boost their Public Relations, should open the sales of that guitar to the general public and donate the proceeds TO The School of Rock program.
Now THAT is a good idea!
Very considerate to take the time to break it down for parents, anything we can do to get more kids into music I am all for!
Best movie featuring an sg.
Hahahahahahahahahaha!!!!

@@Georgeisjawa that’s right! Tell ‘em!!!
The best thing about the little Spark Mini amps is that they are the same interface etc as the bigger Spark 40. They make amazing headphone amps, they can be used for recording if hooked up to a DAW and if you get the Spark Cab they are even giggable. It's insane that a tiny portable practice amp has so much potential. I wish my first amp could have done all that.
That little amp is impressive. No joke. I want Ola to tell me if it chugs now.
It absolutely does. It isn't crazy loud, but it will chug.
If I’m not mistaken, he did a “Will it chug?” on those amps
And I have the bigger version of that spark. Yes. It chugs.
@@Davidckennedymusic I think it was the big boy version, but yeah, I'm pretty sure he did too.
he told us in the past!
That little box sounds good
Love me a small little box
This is a great looking SG! There's something about that brighter? Cherry red finish and the dot inlays with humbucking pickups that just looks cool and it sounds good too!
The Lead 61 is one of my favorite bridge pickups! 😊
I have a friend who went to the School of Rock as a kid for drum lessons and he was taught by the drummer of Shooting Star! My friend loved the program, I only wish my family had the money to send me there when I was a kid.
Good of you making a mini review of the amp.
8:00 Installing new inlays on a fretboard would typically require all the frets to be pulled so that the inlays can be sanded flush.
A super expensive modification for a brand new guitar, something like that should wait until the instrument first needs a re-fret.
My first electric/amp/gig bag/10-foot cable/strap cost my dad like $300, granted that was back in ‘95. It was a Washburn strat copy and a 15-watt Crate amp. No way would he have shelled out $1800!😮
Nope, I had to work washing dishes at a less than reputable restaurant (I was 12) and mow lawns to save up to buy an Epiphone players pack (LP special 2, horrid amp, few picks, horrid cable, and a pitch pipe... not even an electronic tuner yet). This was the early 90s, mind you. After I proved I was serious about it, my parents bought me a Gibson Gothic Explorer, used. I miss that guitar and will not get into that here 😢.
@@leviathan_is_me well this was after a year of playing/struggling with an acoustic better set up for slide the action was so high. It was a total surprise from my dad, I just went in the store for new strings that day!
@@joermnyc Dads are good like that
I work for School of Rock SW Austin, I got one of those too! Thanks for your review- I agree that while waiting for them and knowing they weren’t selling quickly , I thought about the new colors, a cheaper price and the trapezoids vs dots as ways to sweeten the deal. I like the guitar a lot nonetheless!
Used to do school if rock back in the day. Pretty fun, definitely helps young people learn how to jam.
It's really cool that you changed your formal ever so slightly to cater to the target demographic of these
Also, for any of those learning on one of these, if it is neck heavy, try that leather strap
1:20 i actually don’t mind this one Mr Trogly.
Looks good. Let’s watch the rest of the video hey ?
Cheers from NZ 😎🎸🤘
Who else thought Trogly would be doing the Epiphone DG-335 on release day like every other friggin guitar channel??
I am an SG owner and aficionado and that one is a beaut.
My standard is from 99 and it's got a 50s neck too. In the early 00s I remembered them advertised with a 60s slim taper in Musician's Friend.
Yep same here, my 94 SG Standard I've had since new (wow it's 30 years old this year I just realized!) Also has the thicker 50s neck
Never owned an SG. About 10 weeks ago I bought an SG classic. Has p90s but a 50s neck and a normal bridge. I think SGs are awsome, thr Gibson vibe without the 10 lbs or huge body and a brighter sound. I enjoy my 87 LP custom but it isn’t as useful and fun as the SG.
I imagine you need two straps for the neck dive these SGs are known for,one of my favorite styles of guitar,I have a black Angus Young SG with lightening bolt inlays all down the neck, has a beefy neck, nice one trogly.
Those little amps sound great!
Austin, can you advise what sheet colour your bought for the green screen ?
Thx, Ptr
with the strap buttons on the amp i would say the second strap has a purpose xD
Sweet, I watch their UA-cam videos all the time.
I prefer the dots and binding.. I would have preferred the way Epiphone would have done with the wrong heel. Batwing on a 61 style with black chrome pickup covers and hardware on any solid color body
Sounds like a good deal and has nice tone. Seems like a no brainer.
Would like to see you review the Epiphone Dave Grohl DG-335 now that it has been released.
3:37 wide straps are the way to go. I can’t believe i used such skinny strap i had when i played live for 10 years in the 80s and 90s. Always ended up with a sore muscle where the strap was. Not sure what that muscle or part of the body is called.
I have proper width straps now and can play for ages with no issues
Cheers 😎🎸🤘
Cant believe its been 25 years
I was thinking that too !! Time flies hey 😎
I was hoping for the Dave Grohl epiphone tonight! Love the show!
i got to school of rock in australia and i love it. we are actually going on a u.s tour this july!
That’s cool. I didn’t know it was there. I’m actually from Melbourne but live in New Zealand these days. Maybe I’ll contact them to see if we can do it here.
Let me know
Peter
@@PeterMoore350 yeah there definetly should be more. theres 2 in sydney which is where i live and there planning on opening a 3rd and theres one in perth.
@@thedrspodawesome send me deets ? you'll figure it out adresses etc. i can't comment coz YT will delete it.
cheers
I love this SG.
Very cool guitar. If my schedule allowed, I might join SoR just to get the guitars.
But what were you doing with the Spark Mini, just the camera mic? You’re underestimating it. Really degrades what that tiny amp can do.
Do I gig with my Spark Mini? No. But it fills in at band rehearsals shockingly well; both in emulating what I’ll do with my more powerful amp and pedalboard; and as we’re a cover band, the ability to play stuff via Bluetooth is of huge value.
I don’t care that it has dot inlays the color on that SG is something out of this world🔥
Classic rock movie really cool SG 🤘
Back when I was a teenager, I might have been tempted by this model put aside from the lightning bolt inlay, it is like the SG models that were available for less than $1,000 USD when I was just learning myself.
Yeah the 90's/00's SG specials are my favorite SG's especially the ones with ebony fretboards
Mr Trogly I got this orig Spark40 during the lockdowns.
It died. They sent a new one. Here wecare i. 2024 and it’s still going strong.
Would i recommend it ? Dunno. Im PJM on there in terms of patches but nah amp is muddy.
I put decent car audio speakers in the 2nd unit.
Sounds better but tbh no.
Save your money buy the yamaha equivalent
I love the LP Special in Ebony , the Cherry on the SG looks great , Im not a fan of the bolt inlay , man that little amp blows away my Fender Bassman !...HAW !!...Thanks Trog !
Good for you. School of Rock the finest film about understanding RNR.
As far as I know the School of Rock thing got started in Philadelphia as the Paul Green's School of Rock. I remember going to a performance graduation or similar at a recording studio in South Philly around the turn of the century.
12:23 oh clean channel Trogly whoah jeez Louise there we go. Night and day sound wise
Here from school of rock Shorewood, wi
7:51 you can buy fretboard stickers. Didn’t you do a video on that?
nice review
very cool… those T-shirts are awesome too
I still find it a little irksome that a school and registered charity aren't the slightest bit bothered about leaving lefties out.
Not bad playing at all, Trog Man 👍🏻
IMO, '60's Burstbuckers destroy the 490's, especially in the bridge. I've swapped out the 490's for Duncans all three times I had them and always leave the '60's BB's stock. You may not agree and that's your prerogative. Obviously tone is subjective but cut and drive are fairly evident traits you can hear when you compare them.
Definitely different (potted vs un) I like both for different reasons. Surprised, they used the unpotted to learn.
i used to play in the school of rock i quit a year after they were super strict wouldn't even let you sit down on stage absolutely no nudaling i got tired of it so i started my own band and its way better
You’re using room mic yes ? 11:57 sounds trebly but ok given the form factor
Whoever it is at UA-cam that thought it was a great idea to bombard each video with ads. Needs to hit a wall the same way Dale Sr. did!
Yeah and they removed the ability to queue up videos from the iOS app to the paid tier. I’m unemployed so can barely afford food let alone YT TV subscription.
I think everyone is waiting for the DG335 check :D
I cannot believe you said, “things you expect with a standard USA.”
This is why they are collector only now.
Austin needs a consultant job at Gibson with his great design skills!
That's so cool
Now that is a nice one in sound and looks! I own two SG's, one Classic P-90 2006 and a Standard 2015 in a Goldcase. Both are fine but I prefer the Classic with the P-90 for the Pete Towshend vibe/sound! Nice movie too!
Just curious if you tried that Guild Polara Trogly and Guitarista reviewed ?
Their not in my local shop here in NZ so I can’t try one. Cheers from NZ 😎🎸🤘
@@PeterMoore350 No, I don't. I'm in the Netherlands.
Correction; The P-90 SG is a Classic, slip of the pen, sorry!🎸👍
@@TheGouwensno it's fine - question is on that Guild - were you able to try one ?
@@PeterMoore350 As I said, no I don't but when I'm in a shop, a'll try one!👍
@@TheGouwenscan you let me know ? you'll probsbly forget which i fine.
My first ever electric guitar was a Guild SG solid body with Bigsby and and phase switch.
I had NFI about guitars back then.
Some would say 50 years later, that i still dont hehe
cheers mate
Hey man. 👋
Could you review the Fender Juanes Signature? I bought it without knowing who Juanes was. Just based on specs. It's the highest priced Fender strat before the Custom Shop. But imo, it rivals my Custom Shop strats like a champ... There's a push-push with INTEGRATED MIDBOOST! Even better, the first Tone pot blends the midboost!!!... HSS configuration. With 2 custom ultra noiseless single coils.
A VERY THIN layer of nitro in Custom color Luna White...
9.5 to 14" radius...
I've had it for a while now, and it just sounds AMAZING, plays soooo good, looks nice.
Anyway. I recommend this strat except for the fragility of the paint job. But I actually love the thin layer, it's already starting to relic...
Ok cheers
16:33 I watched to the end. This is a bargain deal for you USA ppl.
Snag it.
Ptr
Sweet School of Rock SG LE with 61 pups, but yet another cherry SG? I have the 'black style' quick connect in my 2018 SG Special. Was thinking of throwing a coil split PCB in but they're the "white style", definitely not compatible wiring in the connects. Oh well. I can live with it I guess, my model has small block inlays, 24 frets and Firebird pups so it's unique in good ways too.
Just instal new pots / caps and you’re gtg.
@@TommySG1aftermarket is an option but trying to keep it stock for resale value. Trimming connects off to solder ruins going back to stock.
@@jimmyjames2022if it’s an older one ( 20 years or better ), I’d certainly agree trying to leave it stock. Most folks though view the boards as a con instead of a pro though so I wouldn’t sweat the stock thing personally.
Anyways, if you’re cool with the way it is then by all means leave it alone 🤙
@@TommySG1 yes good point. It's a reissue of a 1974 Special with unique specs. But few want the PCB. I'll give it more thought.
Wow that little Amp sounds great 👍 👌 🙄
About time!
Shouldn’t be splinters at this price point. FGN and many other Japanese builds wouldn’t let that out the factory.
You do have to wonder what the workers think about it. It comes off the CNC machine.… And I guess they just overlook it because it’s not their job. Maybe they check the edges to make sure nothing has been ripped out. Maybe they don’t give them time or tools to sand and finish the interior. Kinda sad.
unless these are sized differently than their production ones, selling these with a levy's leather strap is a big mistake, those straps don't go nearly as short as they should, if you gave it to a 10 year old the guitar would be around their knees
at least it seams that it comes with the gibson straps as well so at least the kids will have some sort of usable guitar strap
such. a cool sg
Brooo... that spark sounds better than the Bluesbreaker 😂
Akka-Dakka baby!!! ✌️
HENDRICKS PLAYED THIS GUITAR
I think that all of the time when people complain about the weight of a Les Paul. I had a '75 LP Custom (White). I was coming from a ES-125 TCD, which weighed "nothing". The LP weighed a lot. I never weighed it because it wasn't really a thing back then. The supplied strap was a no go. But I bought a thick leather padded strap and never thought about the weight again. It was fine.
Spreading out the weight is a great solution
This guitar is mint condish, Hendrix played this thing!
I feel click baited 😆 .... but Now I'm watching (Jack Blacks ) School of rock.. so thank you
if it was a SG based on the movie id buy instantly

Did Austin just run through how gibson controls work ?
You better return that extra guitar strap.
Maybe report it along with the tooling marks on the fretboard
