If you put the distortion / overdrive etc in the amps fx loop it should distort as usual ish. The Mic connector is probably wired backwards - it was a thing sometimes. Unscrew it and reverse the hot and cold wires and the modern mic should work - even if it doesn't you won't hurt anything. I love these things :)
That's an incredibly clean example! I'm with you: I'm not a fan of the Recording model, but this one really appeals to me for some reason. Starting they playing demo with a Les Paul lick was a nice touch. Honestly, I did not think I was going to like this guitar and demo, but I'm glad that I watched it. This is one of your best videos. I really appreciate the time you put into it. It's a bummer that you couldn't get the mic to work. I was excited when I thought it was working. I guess my appreciation for the man himself got me jazzed about this guitar. I hope someone can help you with the microphone issue. Cheers!
have you tried rewiring the pins of the xlr socket? there are two competing standards EU vs US. the distorted voice on the playing demo was very convincing. how did you do it? in post in fcp? very nice episode!
And I thought the original G&L MFD pickups Leo Fender created were thick and chunky beasts! Holy cow! (You can find those on the ASAT Special nowadays.)
@ Only asking as I had a LP Recording model. Bought it in 1977/8 but never took the PU’s out. Sadly had to sell it in 1985 ( helped pay my solicitor for my divorce) Cried the day I had to sell it.😉😉
@@johnburns5783 Ouch! that hurts. A divorce financially embarrassed me as well, but fortunately I didn't have to sell anything. I did sell a 60's Epi Wilshire 12-string and a 60's Epi Coronet for cheap when I was in dire straights in the 80's. That hurt. I would like to have them back.
Yes same pickup. The Personal model didn't have the hi impedance switch like the little later Recording model. Gibson spent a small fortune on the machine that wound those pickups and when Gibson discontinued the Les Paul Recording model the machine vanished. The remake of the newer Recording ll has high impedance pickups. Definitely going to watch this later and thanks for sharing Trog👍
For thirty years, Buckethead has been wearing an inverted KFC bucket as a hat. Consider Mr. Carroll's personal struggle revolving around the question of whether or not to remove the bucket (like Kiss going makeup-free back in the eighties) and realizing no, his image not only depended on the bucket but in fact the bucket had become bigger than he was, consuming him within the red and white striped circular confines (to say nothing of the bizarrely pro-animal rights, anti-corporate imagery feeatured thereupon) of the bucket, much like the crappy fried chicken which it once contained.
Epiphone Lifeson or Epiphone DG335? Which one should I pick I love Rush and Foo Fighters. I heard DG has very thick neck and it’s hard to play lead on it.
Hello fellow BUCKEYE! I want to come out and check out your collection? I have a little collection. I have a Maestro Roadie red Flying V & a Epiphone 5:32 LP peewee Zach Wylde !(lol) I live about 25 miles west of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
It looks way too complicated and gimmicky, but you gotta give it to Les Paul, he knew exactly what he wanted out of a guitar, including all those tones he knew what to do with lulz
Great video! This is truly becoming the digital movie version of the real life museum you once intended to bulid. To me the 'Personal' not only in body shape and size is reminiscent of the L-5S (and the later L-6S). They seem to share some of the electrical features, too. I alwasy thought of the L-5 S as a solidbody version of the L-5.....because the books and magazines told me so. Now I can see there's so much more that connects it to this 'Personal' model! Extraordinary guitar. You're channel is my #1 go-to for beautiful guitars! Thanks a lot!
I though the decade switch was great. Seems, in my opinion, that it took the pickups from "hifi" sounding (the tones Les was going for) to almost standard "humbucker" type sounds we're all used to. Combining that with the bass/treble controls, it seemed to capture some strat-ish types sounds to boot. Very cool and listenable, I would imagine, in a mix. The distortion sounds, while a bit noisy, not terrible, kinda "low edge of breakup" types stuff.
I worked for a band in montreal when i was younger. In the mid(?) 80s. One of the guitar players had a les paul recorder. It was awful. It was stiff and sounded like shit.
the package is a real time capsule.. love it.. I was a little worried at the start of the video you would sing while playing with the mic 😊 phew
I feel like he would sing Wonderwall. Haha

Unscrew it and reverse the hot and cold wires and the modern mic should work - even if it doesn't you won't hurt anything. I love these things :)
Perhaps he could switch the wires on the mic instead?

I saw a LesPaul recording in calgary in 2018 and I wish I tried to get it now
Austin, what an amazing find, congrats Sir.
Thank You for this review, the LP Recording and Personal are crazy cool.

Congrats Trog after 3 years it was worth the wait
Fred, is that your personal guitar? It really is gorgeous...
‘Financially embarrassed’. That’s a first for me.
I didn't expect to like those pickups as much as I do
I’ve seen brand new guitars less clean than that. Amazing ❤
gorgeous guitar
Great review..Would love one!
There's a 1952 Les Paul currently for sale on the GC website for $29,9995.
Hahaha! And here I was thinking "That looks really cool, maybe I could get one."
Sorry it’s 300 000 USD or is that a typo ?
Outstanding!👍🏽♥️
Cool guitar , it is so weird ( like Les Paul the man ) , damn those pickups are freaking BRICKS ! Sounds great clean...Thanks Trogly !
Awesome episode!
Cant help but notice how right they got the lp shape and size when compared side by side to other Gibsons.
The guitar is stunning and quite brilliant. One for serious players.
0:53 1968: Reissued as the Les Paul Deluxe - Goldtop
deluxe isn't until 69
Vintage guitars have just brought out a copy of the recording model (Vintage revo series VRS100 session man)- looks good for the price!
Sounds great
THANK YOU ROB!
And I thought the original G&L MFD pickups Leo Fender created were thick and chunky beasts! Holy cow! (You can find those on the ASAT Special nowadays.)
Great video
Trogly-you had the vocal distortion happening through the mic when you were talking in between the playing segment.....what was happening there?
You could make it distort more under a florescent lite.
Are these the same low impedance PU’s used on the LP Recording model ?
I'm unsure if they made refinements to the pickups between the runs, but yes - they are low impedance.

Yamaha made an interpretation of these. Neat guitar
Awesome
Wonderful story. Score!
Great instrument. Out of my league but can certainly appreciate it.
Get the talk box hooked up!
Be cool to have a regular size buckethead with the same appointments as the baritone model.
Prettier and cooler than a regular Les Paul, totally my jam.
I remember when these came out, I thought they looked strange. Now I know they also sound strange.

I totally understand why they didn't catch on. I don't want one now. It's a collector guitar at best. Make a good wall hanger.
My brother loves a clean sound. I'm sure he'd love it, but I understand how you feel. These have never appealed to me.
That thing makes some beautiful sounds. It almost sounds like some of the sounds that Weezer and led Zeppelin have used in the past.
Am I hearing: " In my rime of dieing"?
I've always wanted to try a Les Paul recording, but I can't find one anywhere and price wise... Yeah...
Les wanted guitars that plugged directly into a mixing board.
It the fact you have to have a special cable or there's no volume, and you try getting one.
Looks cool, sound is uninspiring though.

Gotta love trogly and the troglin he does. I always wanted the Gibson LP recording bass it's such a rad design
I have a 1975 in white , I got it when I was a kid, the bass sounds awesome
@tonygaruba424 good taste never dies I see my friend 😊
He killed it with this video. Trogly at his best!
just for a second I thought the cover said LEE ROY PARNELL
I had only seen this in black and white photos, thank you for showing me in detail what my poverty and geography won't allow .
B-E-A-U-TIFUL. Also shame for making Rob, and us wait 3 years.
Dig the tone but way too much going on for me. Looks good too. Just not my kinda thing. Interesting none the less.
British Honduran 😂
Heavy

Sorry for jump starting that comment! I had only watched until when you made the Buckethead comparison....

So cool i learnd alot ,my desending miner inverted chords and harmonic picking would make that guitar shine. Trog, you did it good 👍

Z is for intentionally late.

The mic needs a pre-amp.
