I would doubt if the Papal’s Italy would attack France. France has been a protector of the papal states for a long time. Doing so will isolate the Italians politically as the Austrians also hated them.

Italians hated the Papal State. By the 1800's it was considered the country with fewer individual freedoms in the west. It actually even had a meaningful revolution, the "third roman republic" that was crushed by the french at Pope's request. The Papacy in the final days was seen as anti-italian.

Pope Pius 9 was pretty liberal and progressive. He just not supported the war against another Catholic nation.

Nice scenario. But... Why you missed Austro-Italo-Prussian war? Italy could trade for Trentino and Trieste or fight. Austrian Empire may crumble... Also Russia won't go into anarchy if Italian army was effective, Austria- Hungary would just give up in early 1917.

Also Italy had no reason to join Germany's side when the Nazis took over and tried to fight France. The only reason this happened in our timeline is because Fascist Italy was not only not given the support by France and Britain to annex Ethiopia (already done here, expanded into the horn of Africa too), but also because Britain had accepted the Anschluss, which went against Italy's plans for turning Austria into a client state.
In this timeline I imagine that Italy would come out of the war desiring to maintain the post-war Versailles order and would therefore side with France the moment Germany thought about remilitarizing the Rhineland, doing the same to prevent the Anschluss.
