      I watched this video in order to try to medicate my dog (she has an ear infection only at 12 weeks) and nope, not happening, as soon as she sees the ear drop bottle she runs away, if we hold her still, she screams like i was murdering her, treats arent helping since she is in panic mode =( and i need to use the eardrops 3x a day, no time to get her "ease into it"

    Good small break downs of training this pup with treats. We found peanut butter to be great because it takes them so long to lick the bowl clean so we end up doing the nails and ears pretty well.

    Loved this! It's clipping Valentines nails, I used to do it in our bedroom later at night and she was pretty good but when I decided to do it in one of our spare rooms she didn't like it, so it's back to the bedroom. She probably prefers it because it's a place of relaxation and it's darker and cosy. That's my theory!!

    What's apperently quite common and which my labradoodle puppy had was earmytes. So unfortunately we had to clean his ears a bit forcefully so he didn't like getting his ears played with.
    But with a lot of petting below the ear and handfeeding him while poking in his ear and he's much better with it.
    I still need to hold him a bit but it goes much much better now.

      Baked turkey is better. Deli meats have a lot of sodium and nitrates which can make pups really sick. I learned this the hard way.

    You cleaning your own ears was so funny! I have a video request. I was wondering, if you haven't already, can you do a video on teaching a shy dog how to heal on a short pleasurable walk without treats? Obviously it is ideal to have the use of treats, but for some reason my rescue is overly shy and occasionally nervous and refuses treats regularly outdoors. I have been working with them, but it is a longer process than with out the use of treats. Thanks! Kate

      Update, I put turkey deli meat into my pocket. Before I left I treated him and showed him that I had it on me. Took him out and he took the treat on today's walk multiple times. For some odd reason he just needed to know I had it, and used the high value meat. Goodness lmbo! Wish I had remembered your advice 3 -6 months ago hahaha! Smh

    Zak, you should check out the Syn Alia Training System for these kinds of drills. The 'name and explain' and continuous bridges makes touching ears and things predictable - they know what's about to happen which makes it much less scary for them. Along with conditioned relaxation - we teach the "get easy" cue, we can offer the dog the choice of checking out if they're not ready. We then wait for them to get easy and keep going. The result is a dog who offers the body part we need to work on voluntarily with the option of stopping if it gets too much.
    Everyone should take the time to learn SATS, it's the most powerful technique I've found (especially for dogs who really freak out at the vets for example) to keep them calm and cooperative during these stressful moments.

      Made in Heaven You're right, Zak's one of the good ones. There are too many videos with too many people talking about being the "alpha" of your dogs "pack" and how you have to "dominate" them before they try to take over and blah blah blah. Yes, I mean you Cesar Millan! If you see any videos with people talking that way, run don't walk as they say. There are some good channels like Kikopup (one of the most well known) or Training Positive. These people stick to tried and true Positive Reinforcement techniques that strengthen the bond between you and your dog by making learning enjoyable, and remember, they are ALWAYS learning! :) Cheers!

    • @firearmhyuk
      @firearmhyuk 7 років тому

      Oh yeah! I went scouting for some dog trainers for advice and possible employment, but the ones i went to suggested that I use shock collars or physical punishment to fix undesired behavior. I just didn't have it in me to use such violent and barbaric techniques and I figured that my 8 week old pup is just a curious ball of energy that doesn't know right from wrong, so i tried to be understanding. The only form of punishment I used when he was getting too out of hand (excessive biting) was a short timeout of 1 to 2 minutes. It did the trick and welcomed him into open arms. Since then, he has been getting a lot better and I don't think even a timeout is necessary anymore since I redirected his bites onto his toys, so he knows a bit more about what to bite, and what not to bite. Didn't know that traditional methods of dog "training was such utter trash, and positive training methods are the way to be. Just takes a bit of patience is all haha.

    • @dggydddy59
      @dggydddy59 7 років тому

      Made in Heaven I hear you. The idea that someone who considers themself a dog trainer would even conceive of putting a shock collar on a puppy for any reason makes me mad enough to kill! I'm so glad you had the good sense to know that the guy was a dangerous quack and walked away. You're already seeing that the only "punishment" that ever need be used is just to remove them OR yourself, for a minute at most. Remember it's all trial and error with puppies, so all you usually have to do is stop the fun and attention for a moment, then they get another chance. After just a few repeats they will have figured out that it's their own behavior that is getting them nothing and then they'll adjust, at which point it's "yaay woo hoo partaay" for the puppy. People forget that the puppy needs some repetition and how can you do that with all the shocking or yelling "no" or any of that crap. Best of luck to you buddy and your puppy too! Cheers!

    Hi Zak, thank you for your videos they’ve helped me raise my puppy (8 months old now) who I rescued from the Philippines ( I found her in a bag up a tree when she was approx. 2 wks old). She is terrified of having her ears cleaned and becomes a wild animal when we try to do this. Recently I’ve had no other choice but to clean them because her ears had become so dirty that she’d scratch at them until the inside would bleed. I cleaned them today. It was horrific for her. Now she’s terrified of me. I feel I’ve broken the trust it took so long to build. I’m not sure how to help her overcome this fear and restore her trust in me. Any help would be amazing. Thank you :)

My puppy will be one year next month and is a rescue, but she never started this until about a month ago when she became in heat (not sure if that has anything to do with the cause) lately she has been so afraid of everything-even going on walks! I have a rescue dog, and we have that dropper container cleaner thing from her veterinarian, and she is terrified of it. The first time we even took it out, she wouldn't let us get near her with it. And more recently, I took the dropper out of the closet to clean my cats ears, and she got as far away from me as possible, and when I walked in the same room as her to approach the cats, she bolted. We can't even get near her with it, but she has VERY large pointed ears and they obviously need to be cleaned from tie to time. How do I get her comfortable enough to clean them? Or even get NEAR her with the cleaner?

    Hi Zak,I have a serious situation with my dog. He is an Argentine doggo, weights 40kg and he is 1 year old maybe a year and a half. I rescued him from an abusive home and he has serious ear infection along with gums infection and a serious wound in the head. I took him to the vet and got antibiotics as well as ear cleaning solution and drops. The antibiotics is easy to give him hidden inside a tasty food. But I can't clean his ears. I don't know him that much and he doesn't trust me completely but he needs to get treatment twice a day. He absolutely doesn't allow me to clean his ears and I foolishly tried to do it with force. He is a very strong dog so of course it didn't go at all. But I think I just added a new trauma to the poor guy. How do I repair this? What do you recommend the next step to be? Will this method work with him or is it too late and I have to get him sedated in order to treat his ears? He is very gentle and very afraid of me even though I never raised my hands on him or hurt him in any way except for the ear cleaning incident. I want to help him but he won't let me. I tried your method and he doesn't allow the soaked cotton balls to get to his ears. Even the vet had to sedate him in order to check his ears and teeth.

    Hi, Zak! How can I teach my dog not to take food from strangers?
    Edit: Also, my dog peed on my bed for the first time and I don't want to make it a habit of his. How do I prevent that from happening?

      Swag Shot a month is a pretty short time for potty training. Simply put, it might not be that the pup doesn't know she's "wrong", it might be that it simply can't hold it that long. I have a 13 week golden right now and she's only been potty trained for a couple of weeks now. Even when she was still having accidents, she knew she had to go and tried warning me (whining at the back door, sniffing, etc), it's just that even with whining I might not be fast enough and she'd go on the floor. At that age, patience is key.

      Its definitely going to take longer than that... think of him as an infant... Even 3-4 year old humans have accidents and that 5-8 months in dog maturity! Patience is key. At 1 month they are usually still with their mothers. But good luck!

    I have spent days and days and weeks just touching the nail clippers to my dog and giving him a treat getting closer to the paw getting closer to the nail on the paw but this does not work for my dog he is a rescue so I don't know if something bad happened to him before but I know that I have never cut too low on his nail I've actually never been able to cut his nail at all because he freaks out so badly!

    I need a video on how to train a dog to fix his ears after he flops them over. Since my dog has slightly larger pendant shaped ears than your dog in this video.
