I loves watching this game. Turnovers killed nortre same. My favorite part was in the fourth quarter when ND ran two consecutive fake punts followed by an actual punt
No, NDU was using the box, which actually Rockne had inherited from a previous coach there. NU was using Howard (I forgot his last name)'s birdcage shift, which had become prominent at U. of Minnesota. In this game it looked like after running a lot out of single wing, they wound up with more success using spin series from double wing.
This game was played a week after Notre Dame staged a memorable comeback against Ohio State to win, 18-13 in Columbus. Consequently the Irish were flat. It was generally felt that ND played too conservatively under coach Elmer Layden and lost games they should have won.
Yep, I watched that game recently on UA-cam when I stumbled upon the first NFL draft, 1936, which the Steelers drafted William Shakespeare in the first round as the 3rd overall pick from Notre Dame. He’s playing against Northwestern’s All-American end Henry Wadsworth Longfellow here.
This was the weak version of the shift, since before about 1922 the Irish didn't have to come to a full stop for one second before the snap - they drove defenses nuts! Even so, you can see how hard it is for NU to get their defensive adjustment just right in only one second...
That's the linesman. They used a stick to mark the spot of forward progress, but that role was long since obsolete because the referee spotted the ball. Most weren't still using the stick by 1935 AFAIK.
I didn't know they had the shotgun back then. Except for being smaller, slower, and all white the quality was very good, a lot of interesting concepts that could/should be used nowadays.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but... I saw only 2 pass plays in this entire game. 1 complete and 1 incomplete. Notre Dame sucks. Totally boring. That's why the 'Notre Dame Box' is Illegal. Too much shifting and too many men in motion. I'm surprised that the score was so low.
@michaeldalgarn7307 That change was years before this game. Nothing illegal about either ND's box shift or NW's bird cage shift, except that in pro rules the bird cage shift is illegal because in the NFL you can't come out in a formtion it'd be illegal to snap from.

Incredible that something this far back is available and also looks pretty darn good quality wise
Hey,I was born 2 weeks after this game.Nov 20 1935.

N.U are using the Notre Dame Box developed by Rockne, an adjustment to the Single Wing formation, with a balanced line.

Super interesting how after the multiple simultaneous shifting the ball frequently came back to a halfback, with the quarterback a blocking back.
I love the offensive scheme where nobody on the defense knows whose going to take the snap because they shift right before the snap.
They run like they have LEAD Shoes on, love it!!
And cheerleaders didn't wear panties!
lol, I believe the footage is not at normal speed. Watch a 1935 Notre Dame vs Ohio State game.
Notre Dame’s All-American halfback/punter William Shakespeare against Northwestern’s All-American end Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
These were the good old days. Half of everything you see in this video would get you booted from the game, fined and or suspended
What in this video is getting someone suspended?

and y does the side official look like he's lining up a putt??

Woodbridge strong
jesus
The players showed so much enthusiasm.
half of the stuff on here would get u kicked out of the game now...plus, the refs looked like they were on safari!!
Now they look like zebras.
They had on rain gear.
Woodbridge gs football
Why does the ref wear that suit? Looks like a ghost

Better than today’s 4 hour pass marathons. Talk about boring. I’d rather watch a Wishbone offense than an Air Raid one.
