- During the DS generation Nintendo released a system that would improve the hardware as well as software. The DSi is regarded as just another DS iteration, but today I'm talking about why it's not only a Pro model, but could also be considered a new generation.

I've got SO MUCH love for my Matte Black DSi. It was the system that got me through my senior year of high school and my first couple years of college. I experienced Heart Gold and TWEWY on this system, two of my favorite games of all time, and fell in love with DSiWare games like Puzzle League Express and Pictobits (both of which I still play relatively frequently)! The form factor is still a favorite of mine and highlighted the best of the late 00's for Nintendo hardware. Cool to see a video on it today!
Same here! HeartGold and TWEWY were two of my favorite games, and I loved puzzle and strategy games from DSi Ware. Great times.
I've had more play time for Fossil Fighters 1 and 2,Pokemon Platinum,Pokemon Black, and Pokemon Black 2. The DS truly was the RPG machine.
🥱🥱
Jr year for me! My Spanish teacher was nice and would let me eat my lunch and game the rest of the lunch period away. Great memories on this device!
I have a limited edition dsi, with the top screen having reshiram and zekrom (black version) no water damage whatsowever, BUT it fell on its L button and that is my assumption of why it doesn't show the top screen correctly, but the bottom screen works very well if the top screen is at an angle, and yes, ik it's out of context, but i just wanted to throw that in, y'know.
The DSi was the first system what introduced MicroSD (external storage). It made online shopping available and was a great bridge to the 3DS.
It was SD not MicroSD, MicroSD wasn't introduced on a Nintendo system until the New 3DS
@@Sean-D78 Oh yeah sorry, you are absolutely right! Well technically you can use microSD if you get it with a SD adapter... Most microSD comes with a SD adapter included (I think it must be Fat32 but you can trick most systems with formatting your MicroSD). I run a 128GB MicroSD on my 3DS XL but Nintendo says it supports only 32GB (ehat is technically true... But there are workarounds).
@@strohhuttv8848 I also use an adapter for my original 3DS! I use a 16GB MicroSD card for it as we don't have many SD Cards laying around.
@@Sean-D78 Makes sense, is 16gb enough for you? Well if most of your library is physically probably it is. I only buy physicals for games I enjoy a LOT. I have homebrew on my and my 3DS XL is basically my ultimate portable machine. That's why I choose 128gb and honestly I could use more maybe I will get 500gb one. I have so far only 4 physical 3DS games Ace Attorney DD and SOJ Japanese import (because I am a huge Ace Attorney fan and with homebrew 3DS you can run Japanese games on a European or American 3DS) and I have Persona Q1 and 2 because I love Persona.
@@Sean-D78 The used market is not great right now... Sadly. I would like get SMT 4 and some Pokémon games physical. Maybe next month. I just got my 3DS XL recently.
I can't express how much I love the DSi. The UI is fast and snappy, the store is great, and the camera app is SO much fun.
I had a lot of fun recording audios and messing with it later as well
I could mod mine using a tutorial of installing twilightmenu++
Well it’s processing power was 2x more powerful compared to the lite. So it definitely was a big improvement
There’s a decent home brew game community too and with the sd card slot it makes it so easy to load those roms up. For instance someone is working on a Mario galaxy demake using the Mario 64 framework. Pretty wild
The real Pro model was the DSi XL. It had IPS screens that were huge at the time (and still large for 4:3 today), upgraded speakers and battery life, etc. Playing Pokemon or Mario Kart on it was just an absolute blast. I have fond memories of going to my local Walmart the day it was released and picking one up.
In my eyes the DSi has the best design out of all the DS systems. I also really like the slightly larger screens it has.
Not sure if it’s nostalgia but I can see that the dsi has better design tweaks but I still prefer the simplicity of the ds lite and I think that it along with the new 3ds xl are the best ds models
I never bought one because of the lack of bc, but I always thought the "i" was just a cool tech naming convention like the iPod. it certainly looked like it was going for that with the sleek form factor, online store, and multimedia functions. Plus, seemed like every new gadget was called "i-" something back then lol
The I was very appealing
It has the "i" because of the camera as in "eye"
“I” see your comment
12 oz mouse reference.
@@K7TZ Oh come on, you don’t think Nintendo was trying to imitate Apple even a little bit? Especially around that time period.
I swear I heard something about the DSi being named that because the Wii had two "i"s which symbolised two people whereas the DSi had one "i" which symbolised the person, "We" share the Wii and "i" have the DSi.
Makes the DSi the proto-3DS. I never had a DSi, so I never realized it had its own storefront until many years later I help a friend's kid sister figure out her own DSi. I totally missed that fire shop theme!
I used to like to go "window shopping" Nintendo online stores,, thanks in part to the music. The Switch's eShop leaves much to be desired...
The DSi has my favorite shop theme by far, I pull it up on youtube when browsing amazon lol.
I still love the OG DS design. I don't know why, but I vibe with its bulkyness
You are not alone. 😃
yeah sometimes slimmer isn't always better, same reason I prefer the original PS3 over the later versions
TBH, the only thing keeping me from still using my phat boy DS is a broken hinge, a destroyed digitiser and that I can't find my charger
I have a couple dsi systems, a few lites and an og one. My og one I pretty much gave up on once games started restarting just because the system barely got tapped on anything. I used it for years like that though.
My nintendogs ds I bought as is at the local goodwill for $5. About 10 or so years ago.
I actually traded my original ds lite for my first og ds and a psp that didn't have a functioning umd drive. But was able to play games from the psn store. My hyperactive yellow lab pole vaulted my first og ds out of my hand and it hit the wall and broke, I had to find a nice used one.
It's an absolute unit
dang, thats a LEGIT WiFi board 8:25 Was not expecting it to be that size on such a small system hahaha
My biggest childhood “trade-in L” back in the day was trading in my DS Lite for a DSi…for the camera…it was $30 after the trade-in. Biggest mistake of my life😂
Still have two DS lites (one with a dead shoulder button), and just ordered my second 3DS before prices go mad, made sure it was a "New" 3DS XL so I can homebrew mod it like my Old 3DS
As a kid, having a camera was pretty cool. Didn’t have my own cell phone till middle school and it was the first camera I had and still have my earliest pics from that potato camera. Also remember loading the sd card with MP3s and used it like an iPod and having a web browser. It was pretty cool back then
Honestly I think that's only in hindsight. I had both and even had a lot of GBA games but the camera, media player, browser, flipnote and eShop made the DSi essentially bury my lite
buy some broken ones and save them, even if you’ve never restored stuff, as long as the motherboard didn’t get wet or suffer static shock any DS lite is saveable
Speaking of the DS coming out in 2004, the GBA really sold a lot of units for a console that life was cut super short. Seriously, only 3 years before a predecessor came out for a very popular console.
Yeah no kidding especially when you don't jump on the GBA bandwagon until the GBA SP came out... In 2003 😂
The 'i' meaning it's a personal system makes sense. The trademark 'Wii' was a take on the word 'We', the letter 'e' being replaced by 'ii' to represent two people standing side by side. Therefore, one 'i' would represent one person.
the i is there because everyone was putting i on their products because Apple did. any other explanation is revisonist bologna.
Did Nintendo actually say that?
@@leavemealoneandgoaway nothing revisionist about the objective truth, which is that their marketing was focusing on 'individual' consumers, the personalization of each unit. The systems inclusion of a camera meant the DS now had an... "eye" on the world.
@@leeluckett1634 tbh it probably was the "I" thing really doesn't make much sense considering unlike a home console chances are you're not gonna be sharing 1 handheld
Whenever a console producer like nintendo or sony removes a feature in a hardware revision, it's usually because that feature was a security compromise
Specifically for the DS; the GBA port was an early way for NDS flashcarts to bypass the encryption of slot-1. But there are other examples from different systems such as the Wii removing Gamecube functionality, the PS3 removing Linux, and most recently the Switch changing the way recovery mode is accessed (although that last one semi-fortunately just affected hackers)
Really good point I think you hit the nail on the head there!
I remember my DSi. It was the blue one. The paint chipped off, and the L and R buttons stopped working. There was some fun games I had on it. There was one game that was I loved on it was Anonymous Notes - From the Abyss.
The DS Lite was the model my parents got for Christmas I still have it to this day the hardware is a bit well let's just say it had its days but I'm suprised that it still works and I haven't charged it in years.
That's true for a lot of Nintendo products. Amazing at the time and the games are still good but the hardware itself though it holds up well physically is and was always lacking. I find that original game boy and GBA stuff still holds up and is still enjoyable whereas I feel like DS stuff in particular especially games that tried to be 3D really show their age. Luckily the best games were fairly stylized so that hides a lot of the limitations shall we say. Also the 2D stuff still looks really good.
wow
There's a difference between the Game Boy Color's hundreds of retail full-priced exclusives versus the DSi's hundreds of cheap digital-only exclusives. The Color is indeed a revision in terms of hardware, but its library was marketed as the next generation.
And the DSi was marketed as a revision when it could have been called a sequel (considering the relatively large jump in capability). I always expected it to get exclusives but it never did aside from the little DSiWare games. Still loved that system though. Especially since my OG blue DS was having issues by then lol
The dsi seemed like a downgrade to me at the time. No gba slot was a huge loss and we didn't have wifi yet, so the ds lite was better all round for me.
So since you didn’t have Wi-fi, it was a downgrade? Who the hell didn’t have Wi-fi by 2009? For what it’s worth, these days the DSi is a downgrade. DS lites sell for more than the DSi’s.
@@leeartlee915 Some people to this day don’t have wifi and buy a current gen system without realizing how crucial internet access is for it lol
@Buzás András Omg, I had totally forgotten about devices not having compatible Wi-Fi protocols. That totally makes more sense.
@Buzás András No, no, no, I accept that I was kinda assuming a lot (and being a slight prick). That’s on me and I apologize. It just feels like we’ve (i.e. I’ve) had Wi-Fi almost 20 years. I know I had it in college back in 2005. Did I have it before then? Damn, I can’t even remember.
@Buzás András if u don't have internet I don't think u should be gaming.
DSi still looks sharp today. Could literally release that today but with updated specs and it would sell like crazy.
So a _new_ New Nintendo 3DS then?
I wished there were more DSi exclusives on the system that actually took advantage of the extra horsepower. I think there were three exclusive retail-released DSi games and the gameplay centered around the camera.
well there were DSiWare which was exclusive
@@libyanhomie1186 - True, but I lean strongly on retail physical purchases, so I may have missed the few that released digitally-only.
Thanks for the response!
Ds lite and Dsi rocked. Having both was perfect
Flipnote was the goat. Just putting that out there
Wonder how long it will be until even DSi's are starting to get those tiny fuses blown up, like how pretty a large majority of original DS and DS Lites are pretty much now 16+ years later.
Spawn Wave: The DSi was a truly awesome handheld.
Proceeds to disassemble the hardware.
So many great memories of making FlipNotes with my friends on the schoolbus. Homebrew on the DSi also slaps.
Imo, I say 3DS/2DS family is the DS pro.... Pro if you think more of it. Cuz let's be real, 2DS is basically just remove the 3d feature, and it is basically just a beefier DS lol.
The DSi XL is the best way to play DS games in my opinion. After buying one and playing them that way I can't go back to just playing them on my 3DS. The biggest problem I noticed when trying to find one though is that so many of them seem to have yellow screens at this point. Seems to start on the edges then eventually covers the entire thing. I had to search for a while before I found one in good shape that didn't have screen yellowing.
I remember when I was on summer break in elementary school, and this was the year that the 3ds came out. He was multiple grades older than me, and he had a red ds lite. But when he got a 3ds that summer, he gave me his ds lite. I remember playing Pokémon on that thing all summer with him. Then when I got my 3ds for Christmas, I gave the ds lite to my sister. I can confidently say that that is what made me into a gamer.
Who was "He"?
@@dogg-paws my cousin
Gameboy Pocket and Gameboy Light have much more in common with the Gameboy Color, than they do with the DMG
My nephew's loved the cameras, mic, and all the creative software you could find on the DSi.
The dsi was my very first handheld i still miss the good days 😭
I really liked my DSi, mostly because of the music player in it. Didn’t have a smartphone until 2012, so aside from being my main gaming device this was my main music player from 09-12 as well
The "i" had many reasons, but one of them was also that the next generation handheld project from Nintendo was codenamed Project Iris, which was supposed to have multimedia options and just one screen, a successor to the GBA which would've been more like a PSP. They scrapped that and made the DS due to time and market constraints and a lot of those ideas ended up on the DSi. That's why Nintendo kept calling it a third pillar, because they actually did plan to have a GBA successor, Gameboy Iris or whatever.
@@Matanumi nope. Project Iris was a real thing
I remember playing Zelda Spirit’s tracks and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days with this bad ass system. Felt so good
Bro, the best part of this video is how you
Narrated the video with your hands… I love the “DS” family. I think the all the DS is one Gen and the 3DS is another Gen.
thanks for your videos and content! makes my mornings start off great.
I would say the Color was a revision of the gameboy since it used a similar format a new generation is when it uses a new format like a disc or improved cartridge or a hardware upgrade
What a happy surprise to see this video this afternoon! Hope everything's going well and the family is ready for a great summer
I've got 20+ DS systems and one thing people forget when they think about handhelds is the screen quality. By the time the DS line reached the DSi XL, every system in that model had an IPS screen with a much higher quality color accuracy and brightness than in the DS phat, lite, and small DSi. I love the DS lite but the quality and screen color temp would varely wildly new out of the box with washed out viewing angles.
I remember wanting this so bad when I was younger! Ended up going for a burgundy DSi XL, but still want to have the DSi!
I don't know if I agree with the "Pro" comparison. DSi, like i in internet. It was basically an internet / eshop enabled DS. I bet it had better chips cause the market moved on from the older ones. Newer chips where more economical for Nintendo over special ordering the older chips.
Thank you for the DSi shoulder fix. My DSi had an issue with the R shoulder button, after watching this video, I removed and reconnected the ribbon cable and now the R button works like normal.
I just found my original silver gba in the official Nintendo carrying case. It’s in mint condition. I was so happy, totally forgot about it.
I loved my DSi, it felt way more high-quality than a DS.
I got a DSi for Christmas junior year of highschool. I loved using the camera to make my own fighters for the included fighting game. I got this before my first iPhone, so I actually used the web browser pretty heavily too.
Loved this look at a half-step up with console revisions. Would love to see you take a look at something like the psp to the psp go or 3ds to the new 3ds. Again, great vid👍
DSI was a fantastic system. I spent so many hours on flipnote and took pictures of everything
I never actually used the DSi. I went straight from the DS lite to the 3DS and then the new 3DS XL
Never liked that thing since they got rid of the GBA slot. I often used that one to play the GBA Pokemon Games and M&L: Superstar Saga
I loved it because I was a kid and it was my first camera, not to mention the glory of flipnote. The gba slot was a small price to pay for those two things that really made my childhood.
Used to play some NES classics thru GBA slot. It was fun having that on the go. And I watched a lot of SpongeBob
Same dude. Huge misstep.
@@icetrey8662 The GBA slot likely would've made the DSi more expensive.
Wouldn"t the GB Color be the first "Pro" system technically? It was a more juiced version of the original hardware
No. As he said at the start of the video thats classed by most people as a seperate system and not an upgrade of a current system, mainly because you cant play GBC games on an original GB... therefore its a seperate system.
@@thetrophysystem3697
Don't know if I agree with that definition personally, but I get what he's saying
@@thetrophysystem3697 pretty sure there are a lot of games released for GBC that can be played on older GameBoys, though the ones that were exclusive are more significant than in the case of DSi and N3DS
@@dafinition GBC games only work on a GBC unless they are Black Cased carts that work on both... there are only so many of those
@@thetrophysystem3697 Are those really in the minority? It seems hard to find comprehensive information on it
I kept my original DS the entire lifespan. I never wanted to get rid of the gba slot.
DSi XL owners: Does your console have dual IPS panels? My DSi XL has dual IPS while my DSi has dual TN, wondering if this is consistent across the board or if it's more of a n3DS XL situation.
Owned the original DS, and then the DSi. Got crazy use out of both, still own the same DSi I bought on release and even after heavy use it's in great condition.
I had the DS lite and mum had the DSi and honestly I always thought the screen made games look blurry and not as sharp. Maybe because of the bigger screen but I always preferred the lite.
the problem with dsi in present day is that with the original ds and dsl having a gba slot and the 3ds being compatible with way more games, the dsi is stuck in this limbo of not actually having any point to it as the dsl can play ds and gba games, where the 3ds can play 3ds, ds and dsiware games, and the dsi only does ds and dsiware. I suppose there is the advantage it has over the ds is being able to run a cfw without an r4 card. But the 3ds does it too.
Wasn't the game boy color the first pro?
Still have my ds and dsi, both still work and well loved and still playing today!
Regarding the name, I always assumed the i in the DSi just stood for "internet" because it was the first one to have an online storefront. The other explanations makes sense too, it's possible the name hit a cross section of possible meanings so it stuck.
I did not realize just how well the DSi sold. I always thought it had kinda fallen short for sales, but it looks like it did pretty good.
I remember how shot my shoulder buttons were on my DSi.
Actually the first "pro" system was the game boy color. Nintendo consider the game boy generation as one even if there was exclusive games. Yes for Nintendo the game boy color was like a new 3ds lol.
I don't care what nintendo says, I still consider them 2 different generations. If I'm wrong, I don't want to be right.
@@njnjco i do too but weird enough for Nintendo they are supposed to be the same generation. The new generation was the gba
Wouldn’t it be the Gameboy Pocket?
No-one ever called a Nintendo DS a “DS2” the 3DS was just a light adjusting function given console, the right sided slider wouldn’t have control of turning games on into more 3 dimensional modes, they basically made the 3DS have a double shaders eclipsing together kind of scheme made for its trigger.
You can design an 8 bit game for use only on computers, you can make their animations be almost full 3D turns, making it be what’s called “2.5D” but then there’s spinning around the camera functions while seeing also that your character whenever it moves anywhere, will have the camera move with wherever they’re redirection their attention.
Minecraft is basically a fully 3D computer game with a first person mode, a game called RuneScape that I play places you in the center of the screen with a “mini-map” which is used for traveling to further points of the game since you cannot click the skybox in most games to go as far as a skyboxes placement in any game is.
DSI, my first modern system. I remember sneaking it into class to use it as an MP3 player to listen to Chameleon Circuit.
Well, for today's standards its camera might not be good. But you back then? At the time the DSi was came out, we had those Nokia phones and maaaybe the first iPhone was already out. But even its camera was nothing compared to today's phones.
It would be cool to do a DS pocket build like Xipher Design, but with a DSi loading homebrew from the SD card slot.
I always thought DSi was a logical name for Nintendo at the time, the Wii to play together, the DS"i" to play alone, plus it has a Wii inspired menu.
You upload. I click. We have a good relationship.
The Game Boy Color is the same generation as the Game Boy just as the Nintendo DSi is the same generation as the Nintendo DS. The Game Boy Color/Nintendo DSi are iterations of the original hardware with added functionality and a bit more technical capabilities. They were hardly next gen handhelds to their counterparts.
The Sony PlayStation 4 Pro is still in the same generation as the Sony PlayStation 4. Again, just an interaction of the PS4. Not sure where the confusion lies.
I always thought it was called the DSi, because it has a camera that can see things including you, kind of like eyes.
I thought it was for internet.
I thought it was the I was short for imp cuz they stole half my fuckin games
the matte blue DSi will forever have a special place in my heart. The first handheld that mommy & daddy didn't buy for me & taught me how to save hahahaha
DSi is still a perfect “pro” console. Mod it which is ridiculously easy and then play GBA games digitally using GBA Runner 2.
If you have to mod it for basic functionality of its predecessor, it's not perfect. Lol
Watched this so many times, so much rewatch value.
I still have the Nintendo Power magazine that talks about the DSi, its cool new features and stuff. I remember wanting it so much because of its UI, ability to download apps and games.
i've been thinking on getting a Lite just for GBA games. all the ones i've seen though seem to have yellow screens. is this also a problem with the DSi?
Yes it is very common. Replacement screens are cheap if you're confident in being able to repair the system. People sometimes sell nice ones with clean screens on Ebay though if you don't want to do that.
@@randop-r9r yes ebay is where i've mostly browsed for them however it's difficult to know what you'll get unless the seller describes any flaws, but, either way good to know. thanks!
the fact that some games outright ran better on the dsi in comparison really sets this statement (pokemon black and white had framerate issues in castellia and nimbassa cities on og and lite when riding the bike, as well as scrolling through the bag with the stylus)
DSi was always a downgrade. I loved my DSi XL, but removing the GBA slot was unforgivable.
No it wasn’t, they may have removed the gba slot but that was to make room for the dsi shop and digital games which is better, plus twilight menu++ lets you play gba roms lol
The Gameboy Color definitely is a new generation of handhelds over the original gameboy. It has 8 bit graphics where the original gameboy doesn't and also allowed for better sound to come from the system.
The DSi however, stil ran all the games the DS could. It might have been more powerful but really almost all cartridge games ran on both systems.
I'd say the DSi would be a x.5 generation by that logic.
I'm a simple man. I see a Spawn Wave video. I click.
2:53 You’re kinda wrong about the DSi XL. The XL keeps the native resolution of the ds games with a better IPS panel. The “stretching” problem you’re talking about occurs on the 3DS XL... Which upscaled the ds screen and made games look objectively worse (low res), not the DSi XL.
I guess it could be more blocky for some… But IMO owning DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL, and 3DS… I can say that the DSi XL has a far superior viewing experience compared to the other systems.
DS Lite is for people that want good ds viewing w/gba compatibility… But if you’re looking for the BEST DS viewing experience: DSi XL is takes the cake w/better OS, hardware, and modding tools as a bonus.
There was an interesting DS handheld known as the DSX it was kinda like a mixture of DSI that could play GBA games. From what I've read I have also heard of a system that was very strange because I was like a mixture of the 3DS and the DS it was special because it had been specially made to run games from the gameboy on up to the 3DS but from what I heard about it they never produced more than a few just for the factory workers and executives. They might still exist but if they do you can't find them anywhere.
Skipped the DS, got the DS Lite. Skipped the DSI, got the DSI XL. Look back further at the Game Boy interations & people wonder why people were expecting a Switch 4K as soon as the Switch was first revealed.
the reason why gb and gbc are the same gen console is because game worked on both system anyway
I didn't know the DSi had a different power cord, so all three iterations use a different cord, interesting. The original DS just carried over the GameBoy Advance charger
DSi and 3DS use the same cable
@@tommyhmilj6112 Ahh, I skipped over the DSi, so I didn't know
I standing for I aka Me aka you makes sense as it's the same naming sceme they would use with the Wii U and the Miis.
The dsi also had a few cartridges that were compatible with it but not with the previous ds.
I mostly prefer the DS Lite, but I got a lot of mileage out of Photo Dojo. I only wish you could transfer save data when upgrading to the 3DS, because my copy of Photo Dojo is still on my old DSi.
0:00 Actually... 🤓 DSTwo is a flash cart which I may or may not allegedly have one of 🏴☠
DSI XL dual IPS screens are gorgeous.
I'm surprised you didn't bring up the FlipNote studio.
That part made the DSi so much cooler.
I should catch these videos more often. Interesting.
I think the reason the DSi cannot be considered a generation upgrade over the DS lite is because there was next-to no friction with software. For instance, you can't try to put a DSi exclsuive game into a DS because it's digital. You only encounter it on a DSi. In this way, it was practically seamless. Whereas, the Gameboy Color had a boatload of exclusive software that was physically incompatible with the every prior Gameboy, which built up a wall between the two.
I fixed my lil sisters ds lite thanks to a spawnwave video. Still have it
I actually bought a matte black DSi locally for cheap like last week, weird timing coincidence.
Would also highly recommend people check out the DSi XL. IPS screens are guaranteed, and in my opinion it's the best way to play any DS games since the colors are slightly better, there's less ghosting and it's more comfortable to me. Regular DSi is brighter tho, so I'll be using that to bring around.
Also I can't overstate how dope homebrew on the DSi is with the SD card slot. Allows me to swap emulators and saves in and out of each system really easily, and although GBArunner2 does have compatibility issues with games like Super Monkey Ball Jr, most games work more than fine. Dope little machine for 2D games.
Oh also, bigest feature (at least for me) it uses a 3DS charger, and 3DS USB cables are readily available online.
befor watching the video I've always considered the GBC to be a "pro" system.
The right trigger on my DSi stopped working. I'm happy that it's a known issue.
I remember using the camera and taking pictures back in 2007
DSi was a very big upgrade it had upgradable firmware , bigger screens ,cameras , actual memory storage it was like a MP3 player and game player kinda like a PSP
‘‘Twas a plague upon my palms
I have both a DSi and XL I found for cheap and the XL is definitely the best way to play DS games and it also does away with all the motion blurring of the screens
I love the form factor of the DSi XL. I’ve just been trying to find a reason to own own while also owning a 3ds xl as well.
@@DudeImRoache If you want cleaner looking pixels then I'd say it's worth it if you can find it relatively cheap
I think if you consider the GBC to be a new generation, you have to consider the New 3DS to be one as well. Which nobody does. Granted the GBC did have a substantial library of exclusives. As for the DSi, it was a nice upgrade. I had a DS Lite I bought used late in its run. But I think to this day the DS is my least favourite Nintendo handheld. Too much focus on gimmicks and casuals. The bite sized downloadable games the DSi brought was neat, but the PSP had that too, as well as full games.
I thought the DSi was interesting but the slightly larger screen lowered the pixel density (making DS games look worse as the DS and DSi has a 192p screen), and the lack of a GBA cart slot just gave me very little reason to pick it due to a lack of DSi exclusives.
I ignored it and went to the 3ds XL because it had DS, DSi, and 3ds game support, it had a higher resolution (240p) and a larger screen, not only that, a friend of mine showed their 3ds running DS games and I thought that the added blur helped to mask the problem of lowering the pixel density of a 192p resolution on a screen as large as the 3ds XL's screen.
