I played Chrono Trigger for the first time last year thanks to a friend. He then gave me one of his DSi XL systems. It plays beautifully on it. It also became one of my fav video games of all time, right there with Zelda OoT on the N64. Never had a handheld except for my GBC back in the day. DS/3DS are fantastic systems. Good video!
They're very flimsy, just go for the new 3ds xl I had one send in from Japan, if you look around you can find them for a good price in near perfect condition. Homebrewing it to make it region free and change the language on it isnt hard to do and there are many guides online
I just finished playing through Resident Evil: Deadly Silence (a port of the PS1 original) on the DS and it was a lot of fun! There's just something about the novelty of the dual screens which never fades away.
I mod consoles as a hobby, and the 3ds is probably the easiest and best consoles to do that with. One thing I don’t hear enough about the 3ds is how BIG its library is, I don’t think I’ve ever come across a game I didn’t like. Even though it’s 10+ years old, I got one for the first time time this year and been having a blast with it! If any of you get one, consider checking out the modding community! It is constantly changing and evolving, hell someone uploaded Diablo 1 for the 3ds.
Could you make a tutorial on how to mod a 3ds or 2ds xl? There are alot of different guides online that say alot of different things and I don't know a proper and solid form of advice.
@SolitaryPilgrim well I did try to change my new 3ds xl screen (grey model) for an ips display and other speakers from another 3ds and now cameras don't work and I tried both cameras (hooked them both up) and it crashed my system and I'm not sure what game console repair place in canada to go to. And yeah I have an Instagram if need be
@@whiviumphosphorus The 3ds family is somewhat notorious for being very difficult to mod the hardware and inner workings, so I haven’t worked with that very much, sorry to hear about that. I’m more fluent with software than hardware. But it does sound like a hardware issue. I know a discord server where there are people who are very knowledgeable about those things if you’d like me to send a link! Though it sounds likely you’d need to buy replacement parts, or in the worst case, a new console. I thoughts you meant custom firmware, as that’s what I’m used to
@SolitaryPilgrim sure a link would be lovely, I'm currently thinking of sending it to a repair store in and i hope it's good and the prices are cheap, the only things I need fixing is the camera, speaker replacement, right triggers replacement, cleaning under the lcd screen protector and it might require a motherboard replacement but we will see, everything else works fine
those star force games are GORGEOUS. ive been trying to look for em since before covid but theyre so effin rare these days and so expensive too. played the hell out of those games on my r4 back when i was a kid. dont know why it wasnt so popular then but man one of my all time ds favorites
I love the Yo-kai Watch series! The first game is cheap, the original versions of 2 are moderately priced (Fleshy Souls and Bony Spirits). The 3rd version of 2, Psychic Specters (main game of 2 but whole new post game content and can transfer your save from FS or BS!) is expensive and 3 is outrageous cause it got such a small print run in the US (idk about other parts of the world). The blaster spins offs are also pricey I think.
If you like investigative adventure games, the Hotel Dusk series on the DS is so good. Also I will never stop recommending the Touch Detective series (the complete collection is also available on Switch).
It is so uniquely difficult to find quality DS games complete in box at game stores these days, most of them aren’t even that expensive or rare, it’s just the people that owned them as kids either A) lost or threw away the cases and manuals or B) already traded them in or sold them years ago At which point most of the good condition copies are already owned by collectors, likely in their 20’s and 30’s, who are internet savvy enough to sell the games on their own at full price. Makes the hunt horrendous though. One example is I’ve been looking for a copy of the Legendary Starfy for the last 5 years, and after hundreds of visits to many different stores I have still never seen a CIB copy - and yet it’s only like $25 with plenty of copies on eBay lmao
Mystery Dungeon is fantastic!! I also have a lot of love for Pokémon ranger!! I am unsure why platinum and black and white weren’t brought up, I know they are crazy expensive but are phenomenal!! Thanks for the content Matty God bless you!!!
I bought a 3DS earlier this year, and while I played it for a while I wasn't that much in love with it as I thought I would. But the DS on the other hand, I've been obsessed with it since I got my hands on one last week. When it came out I went all in on the PSP, so going back to this system now as an adult has been a treat. The first game I finished (today!) was Hotel Dusk.
3ds just doesnt have that many great exclusives or titles that you cant play on the switch or better while the ds litterally has a library and a half of titles that can only be played there that nintendo is still pull from for remasters. Its just such a great little device
@@loelldebach8450 the image fits the screen better and you don't have those bars around, the ds lite can play gba games if you want to use them. they are overall nicer to hold than a 3ds. also, it's super portable so I can just take it with me on public transport omw to work and whatnot, be out in public and all that. so in total it'a not just one reason, it's a bunch of small things that add up
Absolutely love the Nintendo DS and 3DS. I primarily played handheld games growing up since it was more affordable. I was a Pokémon kid so I have pretty much all the DS games. Some other games I would recommend to people interested in the system are Fire Rmblem Shadow Dragon, Mario and Luigi Bowser’s inside story, fossil fighters, and if you enjoy the Pokémon mystery dungeon games, Izuna. For the 3DS, the #1 game I recommend is Kid Icarus Uprising. Genuinely one of the best games ever made and I can’t sing it’s praises enough!
a DSi XL is the best way to play DS games, dual IPS screens (best viewing angles and colour reproduction) despite having less pixel density. The texture on the back is also super comfortable.(if you mod it you can also play GBA games). Also the poor DS upscaling on the 3DS turned me off from using to play DS games
The DS/3DS is easily my favorite system of all time and my largest game library. I’d go with New 3DS XL if I could only have one, but also still love the original 3DS. Awesome system and game catalog!!
There are also benefits to the 2ds in terms of longevity. Both screens are one piece and there is no hinge so it is far more repairable and there are fewer points of failure.
3ds and 2ds do support gba, just not physical carts. So theres no reason not to just get a 3ds or 2dsxl unless you specifically want the physical cartridge support for the next few years
As a Naruto fan in retrospect I’ve owned many Naruto games in my day, but as an adult the only Naruto games I’m truly in love with are the ultimate ninja storm games. The fight scenes are super fun. If you like jrpgs persona franchise is a must play if you haven’t played it.
Trauma Center, Castlevania DS-Series, Ace Attorney Series (even with the new rereleases), the whole Layton-Series are games you should consider buying if you have a DS! :D
Matty you should definitely redive into the yo kai series because those games may seem happy go lucky but the whole premise is these spirits are dead animals that have been reanimated to a yo Kai form. The story also gets darker in the sequels but 2 and 3 are very expensive games on the 3ds. 3 probably being one of the most expensive on 3ds in general.
Even though I already have several 3DS systems, I just bought a fat nds. That console design is so nostalgic. Also: due to no scaling nor black borders, the games simply look the best on actual Nintendo ds systems (as opposed to 3DS)
The 2ds is amazing. The tablet form is so comfortable to play on, and I really appreciate that they were only $80 when they came out, so all of us broke kids could still play nintendo.
No mention of the DS Castlevania games (or Contra 4, for that matter), is crazy. The castlevania ones specifically are top tier DS. Metroid Prime Pinball is very solid, too. And metal slug 7 😅
Should also be noted that the DS and DSi models run the games in their intended native resolution. 3DS will upscale these unless you hold select and then you get a smaller but crystal clear image. While the DSi XL/LL doesn't have the GBA slot, it will give you the biggest IPS screens in the intended resolution. For maximum bang for your buck though, a GBA SP and a New 3DS XL is all one needs to play GB, GBC, GBA, DS, DSiware, and 3DS games.
One 3ds game that I see as a must and is also getting a sequel soon on the Switch is Fantasy Life. It is a game with a pretty small fanbase by level 5 but the ones that play it really love it. It's lacking in the deeper darker story telling that you like, but it is such a fun and cute almost RuneScape like rpg that I could easily see you putting 100 plus hours into.
The DSi XL is NOT just a bigger DSi - it has 2 IPS screens! DSi also DOES play GBA - hack it and use TW++. You aren't even considering the screen which are hugely different - Original DS is dark and pretty awful. DS Lite is better but still not great. 2DS is the most comfortable to hold. 2DS XL is cheap quality on the case - loose hinge and cheap plastic. New 3DS XL is definitely high quality but DS games still look best on the DSi XL ( much sharper image for DS games plus 2 IPS screens..). I would say mod a new 3DS and a DSi XL and play your GBA games in Open AGB or use NSUI to inject for 3DS main screen. Also - Pokemon ROM Hacks! Playing Pokemon Gaia on my modded DSi XL right now. Recommended game Mother 3 with English translation - you do need modded 3DS for it to play without freezing...
Suikoden Tierkreis is also very good.. and don’t forget Castlevenia on the DS are amazing too.. If you start buying a New Nintendo 3DS you have a crazy amount of games with all the DS and 3DS Games and it’s really fun collect too Becouse some of them are expensive it not all of them.
With the current price of physical DS or 3DS collection now, i could pay off my student loans four times with that amount. Physical is great but i'm sticking with modded one nowadays.
The Project X Zone games are great 3DS pick up. A Collaboration game between SEGA, CAPCOM, and NAMCO BANDAI. With characters from JRPGs including Tales and anime properties.
I haven’t heard of half of these DS games so I greatly appreciate the recommendations! I guess Nintendogs, Mario Kart and Picto-chat rotted my brain because I missed alot from that era 😅
2DS (axe-head/doorstop) is best in term of ergonomics/comfort. No hinge means it's sturdy, can easily be held in one hand, or even just between two fingers as you readjust your grip/reach for controls. You're not going to drop it, and it's not going to get bumped out of your hands/nobody is running into the screen and prying it out of your hands with the leverage of something sticking out. Because it's sturdy, not flopping around, etc., it's also ideal for holding over your face while you're lying down, lying on your back, or your side, etc. Also, because the screen doesn't go out past your fingers, the center of gravity/balance point is perfect. It's not trying to flip out of your hands/doesn't tug away from your hands, it just falls down into all of your fingers, wherever they happen to land. All of that, plus contoured L/R buttons, and rubber dome face buttons, makes it the most chill, low-stress, easiest to hold, lightest feeling DS. All of the above means you can hold the thing with less grip strength, in general, too, so it's less fatiguing. I do have a few gripes/complaints, though: The d-pad is *too* squishy, to the point that I can't even feel it, and playing rhythm games becomes nigh impossible; the mono speaker is lame, and while headphones are an option, I miss having stereo, front facing speakers (downward firing speakers like on 2DS XL are the worst, though); I miss 3D. The 3D effect was really good, really immersive/engaging, creatively utilized, and sometimes just subtle and chill, but still fun, and I know I gave that up going to a 2DS, but I just like so much about the form factor, I haven't been motivated at all to fix my 3DS XL after I botched the first repair attempt.
I'm sitting on a treasure trove of DS and 3DS games that I have collected throughout the years. That's actually one of the highest value collections on my price charting list and I still have about a bit under 3/4 left to put into the price charting collection.
Perfect timing with this one, I picked up a new 3ds xl 2 weeks ago and now I’m considering getting the ds lite model I had as a kid for gbagames and moving some Pokemon forward from the gba to the switch 😅
I’m gonna say the DSI XL is the sweet spot. I snagged a MINTY one in the brown color a few years ago. Modded it so I can play the original Pokemon games up to soulsilver. It’s the best system.
I recently got a working DS Lite for only $10, from a local comic shop. Its and ugly pink color, but i couldnt argue with the price. Then i managed to get a legit copy of Pokemon Heart Gold for $60. No box, but I'm just glad to play it again.
I wil lnever forget me and my friend walking from schoo lwe always walked through this field. we never seen anyone walk through it before well one day we walking im looking down and i see something light blue it was a blue dsi xl lol with pokemon diamond was the best day ever bought a charger and it worked
My original 3Ds ended up dying because of a ripped ribbon cable in the hinge for the top screen which makes it shut off when opened. So I bought a replacement and put my original back in its box.
I got a DS Lite. Love it. DS was the best era for Pokemon games. Gens 4 and 5, all those mystery dungeon games, Pokemon Ranger, not to mention the gba Pokemon games.
Just dusted mines off to replay Pokemon Y. gonna mod it this weekend cus I only ever played Pokemon on the ds (literally the only reason i had my parents get me the console back in the day) so I’m gonna see what I missed
I absolutely love Mega Man Star Force and was so glad to see it talked about in this video. I feel like I'm in the minority of people who enjoy it even more than battle network, which I also love. The deeper story and more detailed worlds to explore were excellent.
Unfortunately the price point on the used market for 3ds xl is quite high. I really hope maybe they bring back a modern way to replay these games. To overpay for a used system and then have to overpay for all the games truly is not worth it. The argument could be made if the eshop was still up.
I've had my 2DS since 2016 and the only problem it's had is that the sleep switch is now ridiculously sensitive, like slightly putting your finger next to it triggers it. However, my sister's 2ds, which she got only a few months after mine does not have this problem.
Surprised Monster Hunter didn't make it, my girlfriend now wife went on a vacation to Mexico for a month and damn if we didn't play Monster Hunter almost the entire time on our 3DS's together.
I still have my day one ambassador 3DS, even though some buttons are pealing because of the crappy paint they used on the first models and the screens are yellowing a bit it still works perfectly. I also have a near perfect condition DSi XL I bought from gamestop a few years ago for a few bucks, also working perfectly. I'm still finding new games to play on both systems and having a ton of fun with both.
I would actually recommend the standard New 3DS over the XL. The sharper screen, extra portability, changeable faceplates and coloured face buttons all make for a great package. I bought a grip for it and it makes it super ergonomic. They’re harder to find in NA than the XL though, outside of a Mario 3D Land/Pokemon bundle- the only other options are limited Black Friday releases.
Matty my man, you missed the GOAT Castlevania DS trilogy; three of the finest action rpgs of all time that have become extremely pricy in recent years. Here's hoping Konami gives us them in another collection

Love the DS and 3DS content. I recently got a 3DS so I’m always looking for new games to grab!
Got a 3DS XL a year ago and home brewed! Great handheld!
With the current price of physical DS or 3DS collection now, i could pay off my student loans four times with that amount.
Physical is great but i'm sticking with modded one nowadays.
Glad to see I’m not the only one who couldn’t get past Pokémon Ruby/Sapphires 3D graphics. X/Y i absolutely loved, but Gen 3 just works better in 3D
Good video I like your video intros as always.
I guess Nintendogs, Mario Kart and Picto-chat rotted my brain because I missed alot from that era 😅
awesome video matty. one question what kind of rotating shelves are those you have for your games? always thought they were really cool
I picked one up last year. Did an easy homebrew and put on tons of DS and Gameboy games on them.
@@fattygamer94 I homebrewed but just for Pokemon Bank 😅
I’m gonna say the DSI XL is the sweet spot. I snagged a MINTY one in the brown color a few years ago. Modded it so I can play the original Pokemon games up to soulsilver. It’s the best system.
The wine red colour? I got one almost mint condition for ridiculously cheap. Such a slept on console.
very very informative withe game suggestions. Subbed!
God bless matty
6:00 why do people completely disregard the existence of modding, part of why I got mine was to play gb and gba games 😂
Looking like Maximillian Dood.
I got a DS Lite. Love it. DS was the best era for Pokemon games. Gens 4 and 5, all those mystery dungeon games, Pokemon Ranger, not to mention the gba Pokemon games.
Just rebought myself a DSi coinsidently, loving it all over again! New 3ds next - though the consoles themselves and games seem to now cost a bomb! 💵
Holy crap mr matty plays made a new channel!
Arg maties, time to pick up all the great games
I dusted off my 3ds for heart gold, FE awakening and now inside story
Just dusted mines off to replay Pokemon Y. gonna mod it this weekend cus I only ever played Pokemon on the ds (literally the only reason i had my parents get me the console back in the day) so I’m gonna see what I missed
For RPG folks, it's expensive now but Super Robot Taisen OG Saga is still one of my favorite RPG's ever.
On the DS advanced wars dual strike is a gem
Dsi and dsi xl will forever sit on the iron throne for me and i will die on that hill. And after modding it oh baby do you have options now 😊
I absolutely love Mega Man Star Force and was so glad to see it talked about in this video. I feel like I'm in the minority of people who enjoy it even more than battle network, which I also love. The deeper story and more detailed worlds to explore were excellent.
Gen 4, Matty, Gen 4
Love your vids man, I will always watch just to give you the views lol.
Just bought a 2DS that I plan on home brewing and using it to play my old games🙂↕️
Unfortunately the price point on the used market for 3ds xl is quite high. I really hope maybe they bring back a modern way to replay these games. To overpay for a used system and then have to overpay for all the games truly is not worth it. The argument could be made if the eshop was still up.
Buy a japanese version and mod it...thats an option
Got mine for 220$ it was 250$ but i know the owner of my cities retro store lol
7th Dragon Code VFD!! Such a gem
I got my 3ds back when I was in high school when they 1st came out still own it and I'm turning 31 best handheld next to the GBA
Worth Ds I got so many hidden games I never thought on it. Been playing through switch gab years.
I've had my 2DS since 2016 and the only problem it's had is that the sleep switch is now ridiculously sensitive, like slightly putting your finger next to it triggers it. However, my sister's 2ds, which she got only a few months after mine does not have this problem.
I've been rebuying these games over the last few years as well as some i never owned such as all the dragon quest games
Yeah its worth it the games are stronger and they dont break easily and all the games in there are the bests i love them all forever
The NDS Lite is definitely the best version
Had a black one back in the day
New 3DS XL with homebrewing is great. Its my mobile Nintendo works horse. 3DS, DS, and all GAMEBOYS
Bought a ds for one game and still only own one game. Alien infestation
Games nice...but hard
Given that the DS is home to my favorite Sonic mobile game (Sonic Rush) and the last Viewtiful Joe game, I would say the DS is always worth it💖
Yeah sonic rush is my favorite 2d game in the series
I reccomend "Battles of Prince of Persia" and "The Nameless Game 1/2 (Psycological Horror)" 😊
It doesn't matter the year, DS / 3DS's are fantastic.
Obviously worth a buy, so many good games to go at
Matty my man, you missed the GOAT Castlevania DS trilogy; three of the finest action rpgs of all time that have become extremely pricy in recent years. Here's hoping Konami gives us them in another collection
