Hi! Just a little observation: by feeding BARF, we don't think that dogs/cats are omnivores. We know that they are truly carnivores. We feed BARF because we believe that plant matter (veggies and fruits) adds such a boost of nutrients that are lacking in a PMR diet. We don't feed starches, grains or anything that makes up an omnivore diet. It is easier for us to add veggies, fruits, eggs, fish, some seeds, kefir, golden paste, and so on, to the diet, instead of going crazy trying to find a whole pray or looking for organ meats that in some countries are almost impossible to find.

Yess! I hardly can find gibblets yet alone packages only contain chicken hearts. But for other organ meats, it is usually no go where i live... Or I may source them online but since they are pretty rare to find, it is priced too damn high and not sustainable for my economy. But still I want to feed my babies the absolute best I can so i compromise with veggies that they can eat without causing a problem. I always include appropriate amounts of heart and liver though. That is a must.

Honestly dogs are kinda carnivores turned omnivores so my belief is that they benefit from a wide spectrum of nutrients including grain since historically dogs ate grain leftovers from us. Its not evil if fed in moderation.

I think where the omnivore aspect comes in is based off of the prey model since in the wild they would be eating whole prey which would include any plant or fruit matter that had not been digested by the prey.

There are no 100% carnivores or herbivores, everything falls into a spectrum. Wolves have been documented eating plants, and cows have been seen eating snakes. This video covers that. ua-cam.com/video/GCv1biupT14/v-deo.html

I have been feeding my pup the BARF diet for a since he was a few months old, he is now 2 years old. But the difference is I need to cook the meat as he absolutely would not eat them. He does still eat raw bones and freeze dried organs which is why I’ve been following the barf diet. I’m starting to think that maybe he is missing important nutrients due to the cooking process. We would really appreciate it if anyone could offer some advice

I just bought a freezer, and began collecting so I can switch soon, and tbh I would probably do BARF. In the past I fed similarly to BARF. I think there are things in plant and fruits that are very beneficial to the diet.
However, controversially, I will be adding starches. It sits in the intestinal tract a bit longer, decreasing scavenging throughout the day in the home. It’s a common issue with altered animals, like mine, but their hunger can sometimes increase and become a huge problem even if fed what they need in a day.

    • @WillBlueAnimalTraining

With raw diets, you don’t actually have to feed whole prey. Though some raw feeding companies will sell whole prey grinds. These are essentially ground up whole prey that looks like the ground meat you’d get at the grocery store. So it’s not like you’re forced to feed your dog and cat something with a face. Though grinds do require some taurine supplementation as a small amount of taurine is destroyed during the grinding process.

The BARF is not made thinking that dogs are omnivorous, because they are not, the BARF is made thinking that dogs are opportunistic carnivores :)
Dogs are opportunistic carnivores (I'm not sure what it's called in English, it's not my native language) they can assimilate nutrients from some veggies, like wolves, but have a carnivore diet, and carnivorous needs. ^^
A simple way to tell the difference is to look at the teeth, and the teeth of a dog or a wolf are those of a carnivore :)
Another way that requires a little more knowledge is to know the carbohydrate needs of the animal, omnivores absolutely need carbohydrates, carnivores do not need it, and it is harmful for them, because they cannot assimilate them. :)
