NOW you tell me, *snicker* (I mean, NOW I am looking down here, when I am done). Oh well, I am in Blender 3.1 and it wasn't too difficult to figure out what had changed -- I also think the changes have been for the better, which helps. Shortcuts are obviously the way to go, even if at this point remembering them all seems daunting. That's why it's important that you show the alternatives. You have a teaching style that suits me well -- lots of demonstration and repetition, step-by-step. I can't bear the videos with "speed tutorials"; those aren't tutorials at all, but only show off how quick the person can do something they've probably done hundreds of times and I not at all. Maybe that will become ok when I myself grow more proficient, but I kinda doubt it; the way you do it just anchors it all better in my brain. In any case, thanks for sharing your knowledge!

I really like how you repeated a lot of the shortcuts or where you can find the tools since this is all new. After hearing it a few times it really does help. So, thank you.
one of the reasons this tutorial is so good is not just it's conciseness, but also your emphasis on using the keyboard shortcuts. It really does make the workflow much easier and enjoyable. Thanks!
Thank you for the awesome feedback :) I believe keyboard shortcuts make life SO much easier that it's really important to learn them, but I understand it takes a while to pick them up so in the early stages I like to repeat them. A lot :D
All comes down to practice in the end :) Just experiment and try to create models and over time you'll get good at it. It's no different from any other skill
You can only create certain shapes using certain techniques. All you really need to know how to do is create curves and shapes from scratch and just like drawing, realize every model is just a collection of shapes. If you use references for objects and break them down into simple 3D constructs, man-made objects like this with a lot of clear insets, extrusions and straight lines become really trivial.
One can make a chest but there isn't enough info here to make you knowledgeable in modeling itself. Not enough depth...it lacks the why. You know in your mind how you would do it but working in Blender you need to know how someone you have never met would do it and where they would hide the option to do it . Not intuitive at all.

I joined an indie game dev group that allowed me to join while still learning modeling, and according to the other modelers, it isn't so bad to have triangles. So for anyone wondering, in game engines (like unreal engine 4) it isn't the end of the world if you model something that absolutely cannot avoid having a triangle, like the tip of a sword or a rupee from the legend of Zelda.
There is nothing wrong with having triangles in areas where you expect no deformation :) They're usually just a problem if they're on areas of a mesh that needs to animate / move / change so tip of a sword should be fine - though even that can easily be turned into an Ngon

Thanks to one of your tutorials, I was able to change the materials of a cube and render it. Now, it is everything, from my profile pic to my wallpaper. I effin love this cube.
@@SurfacedStudio The tutorials you do are the best I've found, and give me the beginner info. I didn't even know how to change the view type, and you actually told me how to do that. Thank you very much, I hope to be able to do something with this information, something I can enjoy.
This has been so helpful so far! I'm trying to learn blender going into engineering and design, so starting out with your help has made it so much better. Thank you so much
You are my hero, oh my god. I've found so many tutorials that assume I already know the basics, and it's so disheartening. This was exactly what I needed!!
This video is 3 years old now and I still remember following this back in the day! I quit after because I was so confused, but got back into it a little over a month ago!
hey thanks alot for this. i have used blender for along time now along with alot of other cad molding programs. i could never really get any ware in blender for lack of the simple things you covered in this video like {end gons} and surface thickness. i will totally be going back into blender to draw up some things. i cant wait for more into about this program. it seams that info is limited for blender.. people leave out the little things and its was very inclusive. thanks so so much. i learned more from this video then the hours of vids i have watched on blender. i also love your after effects vids. they have helped me immensely . i have bin looking for a new program to model for 3d printing. i think iam going to go back to blender. thanks agane!!!
Thank you so much for the awesome feedback :) Really excited to hear you found the tutorial helpful! I do plan to make many more videos for Blender - in the meantime, another great source for Blender tutorials is Blender Guru :)
I'm not even half way through this tutorial. my first attempt messed up and on going around my nifty box, I noticed a bunch of edges on the embezzlements which I had done accidently by not using ctrlZ after canceling the operation. I managed to get back to where I was in no time because of how well this is taught, and without any messed up edges (yet)! Credit to you for these tutorials which, although the program has changed dramatically visually, can still be translated now and followed with ease! Kudos!
The "Region (Vertex Normals)" and "Individual Faces" seem to do the same thing and I can't find a fix for that anywhere. So far every project or model I've made I had to extrude individuals, then additionally extrude the faces on the edges. Is this a version problem or is there something I'm doing wrong? Great tutorial other than that, I wish I watched this when I started!
Hey man, this tutorial is amazing. But my Extrude Region and Extrude Region (Vortex Normals) is going the exact same thing. Basically Both does the same as Extrude region. How can I fix this? Thanks for posting this video...lot to learn.
If you want to assign different materials to different parts of the model you have to go in edit mode and select the faces you want to have a different material. Then right in the Materials Tab you press plus for adding a new material slot. After you configurated the material like you want just click assign while the faces are selected. Now you have different Materials on one Model. I hope it helped :) I also made a quick video about it: ua-cam.com/video/uMJC5BMVzC0/v-deo.html
Thank you so much for this video. All the videos on youtube teach you nothing about the UI and shortcuts. This is really helpful and works for the new version of Blender.
I got problems using the knife tool. It worked just fine outside the box, but inside I only could cut thrice before it didn't work anymore. Once I make the line from a to b and press enter, it just vanishes (the entire line). I have tried to remove doubles, but I had none. EDIT One: I then tried to use j instead. It worked on all except one. Whenever I use j on that one it doesn't cut straight from a to b, but instead it literally goes along the wall (instead of the floor) for some reason. EDIT Two: Now it suddenly worked using the knife tool. I don't really like how unreliable this software is, but oh well, it's free.
Link hello, I also had the problem that knife just vanish. What I found that solved my problem was first eliminate any doubles. What I did was select everything (all the chest) press W and then remove doubles. I had like 160 vertices removed and after that knife worked without any problem.
I don't think it's the software - it's been a pretty reliable and stable build for a while. You may have accidentally duplicated your edges or vertices. Check out this video on some common things that can trip you up: ua-cam.com/video/n9YYrVQdCMY/v-deo.html
@@SurfacedStudio I had the same problem and I notice that only happened where we made the extrude, where two vertex are close from each other. On those locations, the green square keeps his bright green color when touch the vertex and when I click, the line vanish. In places without vertex close, the squares turn green-brown and the knife works. So, I don't know how you do it and why works for you...
I could never make anything besides a spiky, glitchy mess until now. I hope this man is doing great rn he made this tutorial easy to follow and actually broke it down for my inverted brain to understand. 10/10 went from negative to positive IQ after learning from this man.

Decided to expand my 20+ years of graphic design experience & randomly just searched "create 3d model in Blender" and found this video near the top. What a fantastic starting point! You go a little bit fast for someone who has only ever *heard of* but never *used* Blender before, but I can always just go along and pause the video when the time comes to make a practical application of it (i.e. once I actually procure Blender lol). Definitely will be checking out more of your videos! Thanks for providing such great content!
@@sevoni Yeah because *obviously* my channel means a great deal to me, as you can tell from my upload activity, right? Exactly why are you so miserable that THAT was your first response to a random stranger's comment?
My guess is to either look up sculpting or make a cube and bevel out limbs then add a sphere for the head and reshape it. I'm not sure about the hair, if you want to use 3D hair strands or a plane, like old school games. I'm still trying to get used to Blender again, but I hope this gives you some ideas.

@@SurfacedStudio I want to later animate things like models were done in the n64, where each arm for instance is a entirely separate model. In that case making sure everything is quad doesn't matter right?
No wonder all the Sims 4 hair meshes seem to have nothing but triangles o-o
Thanks to one of your tutorials, I was able to change the materials of a cube and render it. Now, it is everything, from my profile pic to my wallpaper.
I effin love this cube.
:D Thank you for the comment! Glad to hear you liked the tutorial!
@@SurfacedStudio The tutorials you do are the best I've found, and give me the beginner info. I didn't even know how to change the view type, and you actually told me how to do that. Thank you very much, I hope to be able to do something with this information, something I can enjoy.
This guy: can I offer you some hearts in these trying times?
Thank you Surfaced Studio, this really helped me a lot for my Graphic designing and etc. Thanks again!
Thank you for the feedback, that is great to hear!
Not only did you make this easy to follow, but also captured how fulfilling 3D modeling is. Grade A content!
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave this awesome feedback :) Much appreciated!
@@SurfacedStudio you’re very welcome!
This video was great, thanks :D I'm learning Blender to use for my games; keep doing Blender tutorials!
I intend to, thank you for the comment :)
This has been so helpful so far! I'm trying to learn blender going into engineering and design, so starting out with your help has made it so much better. Thank you so much
That is awesome to hear, thank you very much for the feedback :)
You are my hero, oh my god. I've found so many tutorials that assume I already know the basics, and it's so disheartening. This was exactly what I needed!!
Thank you for the lovely comment! Happy to hear you got something useful out of the tutorial!
thank u man..u are helping me too much understanding this great program ..hope u go deeper in next videos
Thank you! There will be lots more tutorials :)
Comment section: Still hearts after all this time?
Him: Always ❤️✨
Him: still trying :)
@@SurfacedStudio never stop uploading pls
Have been using blender on and off for a while and will always go back to this video for a quick refresh! Thanks again!
Thank you for the comment, glad to hear it helped!
For problems with the knife tool in 2.8 around 23:20 use Merge Vertices:
ua-cam.com/video/88E6dx2NoPo/v-deo.html
first 5 minutes and i learnt so much that i did not learn from 5 seperate videos.
Glad to hear you found the tutorial helpful :D
Next up: how to spell "separate".
This video is 3 years old now and I still remember following this back in the day! I quit after because I was so confused, but got back into it a little over a month ago!
Blender got so much better since version 2.8! Definitely give it a shot :D
hey thanks alot for this. i have used blender for along time now along with alot of other cad molding programs. i could never really get any ware in blender for lack of the simple things you covered in this video like {end gons} and surface thickness. i will totally be going back into blender to draw up some things. i cant wait for more into about this program. it seams that info is limited for blender.. people leave out the little things and its was very inclusive. thanks so so much. i learned more from this video then the hours of vids i have watched on blender. i also love your after effects vids. they have helped me immensely . i have bin looking for a new program to model for 3d printing. i think iam going to go back to blender. thanks agane!!!
Thank you so much for the awesome feedback :) Really excited to hear you found the tutorial helpful! I do plan to make many more videos for Blender - in the meantime, another great source for Blender tutorials is Blender Guru :)
Thx watched the whole video and i learned so much liked
crazy to see this is what blender used to look like 3 years ago
bruh lets get this a heart in the first hour
let's hope
@@minorityman6672 well it didn't i still hope it gets heart
Can you explain why everyone is so hard up in hearts? Is there a competition going on somewhere? :D
@@SurfacedStudio nah just the vid was posted a long time ago and u still see comments and heart them
Still see them. Still heart them :D
Great tutorial other than that, I wish I watched this when I started!
same
Kinda got the same Issue but I cant even choose "Region (Vertex Normals)" in the dropdown-meny when pressing Alt+E
Same issue here....version 2.79b
Hey man, this tutorial is amazing. But my Extrude Region and Extrude Region (Vortex Normals) is going the exact same thing. Basically Both does the same as Extrude region. How can I fix this?
Thanks for posting this video...lot to learn.
Thanks for that video!!! I really needed it 😂
Glad you found it helpful!
So, yeah I'm not an artist but I'm not hopeless, before i go on. Is this the series for me?
yep i literally watched this yesterday and now im able to inset, extrude and all the basic commands and ive never touched 3d modelling in my life
wow. so patient to explain the shortcut every single time. You are a hero. thanks for this!
Thank you for the comment :) I tend to be quite picky (some people like it, some don't) and it's great to hear that you found my style useful
can you do a camera tracking tutorial in blender?
I plan on doing that eventually :) Will cover the basics first though
Surfaced Studio yaay! :D
hey, i sended u an email. Do u still use your email? I was wondering if i can help u with advanced blender tutorial's
I'm also confused on adding separate materials to separate parts of a model... I'm pretty sure I just select different parts and apply materials
Thank you so much for the awesome feedback! Great to hear you enjoyed it :D
I'm learning with you!
:D
so am I
very nice sir u good vidos all thanks
Thank you!
Outstanding tutorial for absolute beginners in Blender! Your step-by-step approach makes it easy to follow along and grasp the basics of modeling.
Glad it was helpful! Be sure you check out my updated series :) And even that might be a tad out of date now with the latest version of Blender
Awesome!
:D
How the hell did you still giving heart on comment on this very old vid
There’s this button you press... kinda looks like a heart on the comment ;)
This tutorial is legit great. All the details were from scratch. Thank You
You're very welcome :) Thank you for the comment! I really gotta update this tutorial for version 2.8
Him: "So here's how you make a chest in Blender."
Me who just wants to know how to make a spikey shiny ball in Blender: 👁👄👁
Once you learn the basics, they're transferrable to anything you want to make, including spikey shiny balls
Thank you both for suggestions. I'll also take a look at the video.
@@albertoalarcon3794 That was exactly my problem, and after a 140 vertices genocide everything worked fine, thanks for the help!
I could never make anything besides a spiky, glitchy mess until now. I hope this man is doing great rn he made this tutorial easy to follow and actually broke it down for my inverted brain to understand. 10/10 went from negative to positive IQ after learning from this man.
YOU ARE THE ONLY UA-camR THAT EXPLAIN VERY BRIEFLY THAT'S WHY YOUR TUTORIAL ARE QUITE LONG BTW WHY YOU HAVE SHIRT WRITTEN THAT VIDEO GAMES RUINED MY LIFE
THANK YOU VERY MUCH GLAD YOU LIKE MY TUTORIALS ALSO I LIKE TURTLES
I can’t find edit mode because my blender is newer
Edit: Found it. Top left corner
Glad you figured it out!
how new are you?
@@sevoni I am not reading all that from someone who acts like a 12 year old troll. Have a nice day.
Doesn't even work on v2.8. The whole cut thing is broken
I did this tutorial on 2.8 without any problems. Biggest difference I found was that select now defaults to left click instead of right click.
anyone from 2019!
I am! :D
lol its only 1 / 2 years ago
Omg yes, i thought i was the only one able to time travel!
No
I agree. Helpful tutorial. I was making it way more complicated than it had to be.
Next.. Make a blender with Blender.
Inception!!!
Blasphemy!
how do i make anime girl with blender ok tutorial ?
My guess is to either look up sculpting or make a cube and bevel out limbs then add a sphere for the head and reshape it. I'm not sure about the hair, if you want to use 3D hair strands or a plane, like old school games. I'm still trying to get used to Blender again, but I hope this gives you some ideas.
This is my very first 3ď tutorial. English is not my mother tongue and I can understand him all along. Despite the vastness of the explained....(for an absolute beginner)
This guy is a real pro!
No pro here, but I sure am glad you enjoyed the tutorial :D
All teachers/professors could learn something from you. Repetition is the key to learning anything, and you have a teaching style that subtlely reintroduces information throughout your lessons in a way that really reinforces it. You don't assume that your audience fully absorbed what you said the first time, and continually offer it up to them in a nonintrusive way. You have a gift sir, thank you for sharing it with us.
Man, you just killed it! Brazilian designer here and i'm glad to watch this kind of content. Amazing work, dude! Congratsss
Thanks for the comment :)
my opinion : ur the only person who teach slow, much clearer and much understandable thank u so much for this tutorial of urs, i'm new in blender, now i kinda understand each tools is needed for, i still didn't check ur vids, i hope u can do some window teaching or gothic things, + subs thank u agn
