- Don't you just love these two? And it's pretty cool how they start off in black and white and slowly fade into color.

I found out the other day that Frazer and Pat put that line in together omg

Never make this the first episode of Doctor Who you show a blind person. They'll misunderstand the Doctor and Jamie's relationship entirely.
"What's he telling Jamie to come look at? His big one?"

No matter what, Jamie was the best male companion ever! I do remember an interview Frazer Hines did where he hinted he would have loved it if they would have let him stay and travel with Six and Peri. He really missing being on the show.
Plus this story did begin the Past (Jamie, Zoe, Leela, Jago & Lightfoot) and Future Companions (Charlotte Pollard) go w/ Six Program via Big Finish.
@@SuperWolsey Leela wasn't from the past lol
@@BenNightHound since she was with Four first and remaining on Gallifrey after, she qualifies. But the fact she crosses Paths w/ Two falls under futute jurisdiction as well
@@SuperWolsey so what if she travelled with 4, she still wasn't from the past, have you seen her introduction story?
@@BenNightHound it’s not about the time period she’s from, it’s about the fact that she’s a companion who’s already traveled with the doctor previously. Hence why Zoe is in there despite being from the 21st century
A 60s Doctor with the 70s console in the 80s console room. 😎
Or a 60’s Doctor paired with a 80’s Doctor against a set of 70’s and 80’s foes by a popular writer associated with the 70’s for an 80’s season.
But of Course.
I love how genuinely offended the doctor is by the presence of the Teleport Control. Like he's just like "What do you take me for, an amateur?"
Wish they'd stuck with continuity. The Time Lords had no idea where the Doctor was at this point.
The only explanation is that they were lifted out of their time streams, given a mission and memories of it were erased afterwards which kind of makes a mockery of the later trial.

Love how Two was in every multidoctor special.
pat loved the role ans was always happy to play it
Patrick Troughton and Frasier Hines picked up right where they left off in 1969, not missing a single beat.
Fun fact originally Jamie was going to be with The Second Doctor I 1972-1973's The Three Doctors, but he was busy filming Emmerdale Farm( now known as just Emmerdale)

because Patrick refused to have his hair dyed or wear a wig like he did in the 5 doctors special as he found it very uncomfortable. It should be noted that Patrick and Colin got along very well Colin was a friend of the family he and Patrick's son were best friends and Colin was a groomsmen at Pat's Son's wedding

@@icommitarson It definitely exists
It was - Troughton and Hines used to alter bits of the script in their acting to make it more euphemistic on purpose!
He's not just a Highlander, he's a McCrimmon. The McCrimmons actually existed and were the Royal Pipers in the 1700s. Their college of music had considerable power and prestige. Since Jamie was a piper for the clan, he presumably would have been a part of that college. In addition to regular Highland rules, he would also have been obliged to follow the political obligations of his clan's special status and also any college rules.
Cool! Oh, the fan fiction plot wheels are turning.
If they were Royal Pipers, is that for the Stewarts or the actual family in charge, the Hannoverians? The jacobite rebellions were after all, british civil wars, not England vs Scotland.
@@Mitch93 Interesting if it was the Stewarts, considering that the Brigadier is of that line.
Because of budget, they used the same stage that Colin Baker used while using the console that Peter Davidson and Tom Baker used.
Yes that's quite obvious however modifying/changing the console to an the 60's style is nice :)
And quite frankly I'm glad. I could never get past the clearly painted circles on that one wall.
The in universe explanation is that the installation of the Stattenheim remote control modified the console and walls
Hey at least they put some effort into it, imagine if they used the 6th doctor’s console. And besides the fins dividing the console being gone, this console is still the same shape as the original. I do wish they at least had repainted the old console for it, although on the other hand i would want them to preserve the console as it was.
Oh, I watched this when I was broadcast and was thrilled to see The Mighty Trout and Jamie again, they were one of the best Tardis teams.
Love the B&W to colour fade in.

I'd love to hear Five's reaction to meeting Six. And I can just hear Six responding with, "Oh, shut up, celery boy."

This is one of the the most entertaining moment in all of Doctor Who. The Doctor and Jamie are life.
I wish the newer doctors had a companion from history. Certainly makes things more interesting
I think there is a feeling the Doctor would spend too much time explaining things - if the companion wasn't from at least the 20th century. Which in turn would cause problems with pace.
@@robalexander8065 they did it for 26 years, it didnt interfere, young people these days just have very short attention spans

I love Jamie and the Second. They were in my opinion the best Doctor and Companion. They worked so well together.
Matt Smith asked if the doctor could wear a bow tie after watching a ton of the second doctor's episodes
A shame they neve had a pairing this good again, just recycling "regular girl who wants more" over and over
You gonna argue that liz Shaw, Sarah Jane, leela, Romana or nyssa (just to name a few) fit into that role? Even then, that's a horribly reductionist way to look at the characters who technically do fit that archetype. Are you gonna try and tell me that ace and Donna are at all similar?
I agree with the general criticism that they should vary the type of characters they have as a companion more than they do though, as far too many are a girl from present day earth. Other than captain Jack, who was only a companion for 2 stories, every single companion in the modern show has been from present day earth. Even in the old show that problem started to show up towards the end where all of the 6th and 7th doctors companions were from present day earth.
Yup, and in New Who elevating the companion to be more important than the Doctor.
RTD and Moffat ran that into the ground faster than Disney ever could with their own shit
Turlough? Adric? K9?
We need a proper alien companion. Like Ali from The Beast of Babylon.
Im sorry but this duo can not be beaten throughout all of Doctor who history
"Eh, Doctor, have you seen a ghost or something?"
"What do you mean?"
"You've gone grey! Have you not seen your hair?"
"Oh no!! It must be a side effect of those meddling Time Lords!"
It really made no sense since Patrick wore a wig to play the doctor and he was portraying him in the same time period he had solid black hair.
@@Dragnmastralex Google Series 6B, should clear things up.
Can't believe this episode aired two years before Patrick died
Yeah, they were pretty fun together. I thought everybody was good together in this story, including the companions with each other and with the other Doctors. It's just one of my favorites!
These opening scenes do such a great job of setting up the 2nd Doctor. When I was young and watching this for the first time (other then the 5 Doctors) I had never seen a 2nd Doctor story. Since I have, and this got the character so right for kids like me who never saw him during his time. He was such a great Doctor.
this particular story is one of the reasons fans believe in the season 6b theory (before he regenerated 2nd did work for the tome lords) the fact hes older, the TARDIS has a remote and discussing events that never happened on screen
@@julieeverett7442 He only looks older bc he refused to wear a wig and dye his hair. haha.
In one of the audios they explain this being a mission from another Time Lord the Doctor ended up helping.
"Well, think of the commotion. They'll all be scrambling around wanting my autograph!" Love it.
'Most brilliant scientists in the Universe' at first... later to be described as 'Ham-fisted Numb-skulls'. The 2nd Doctor had the best lines.
I like that line also, I wonder if it was a deliberate innuendo.
It was
Those two threw a lot of innuendo and body language in a lot.
They've said that plenty of times back in the Second Doctor's actual series, too. Not just this special...
Pat And Frazier use to make these sort of innuendos alot if you go back and watch episodes from the 2nd doctor you will pick up on them.
They also hold hands in Tomb of the Cybermen.
Possibly the most charming scene of Colin Baker's time as the Doctor
nope Colin Baker was good friends with Patrick Troughton's eldest son David, Colin and David once shared a house together and Colin was best man at David's wedding and is godfather to David's eldest son Sam.
I was 'there' from Patrick Troughton's first appearance as Doc #2. I loved every minute of his tenure.
Thats so cool! Do you remember any memories of watching the now missing episodes. How were they?
I just loved Patrick Troughton's Doctor. Although I watched virtually every episode from the first episode in the scrapyard, I thought Hartnell a bit acerbic whereas Troughton was jocular and pixie like. Chalk and cheese!
Feels a bit like they're trying to place this during Victoria's time in the TARDIS in season 5 but then the Doctor mentions Time Lords like its nothing placing this in season 6B which honestly makes more sense with how much older the Doctor looks in this story
I love the theory that this isn't in the second doctors past but is actually set after the war games with the doctor being used by the time lord's
it's a bit more than a theory, though i was hoping for it to be explicitly lampshaded with the Fugitive Doctor in the current run. alas.
Big Finish is currently doing just that.
It would make sense considering the Time Lords have put dual control into his TARDIS considering they shouldn't know where he is at the point in time
I wish the new series would do this a little bit more. Have a previous Doctor appear for an episode or 2 in the middle of the season, not specifically in a special.
11 - "I wear a bow tie now. Bow ties are cool."
2 - "Right, follow me."
During the hey days of my introduction to Doctor Who in the summer of 1986 in the U.S..
I have seen snippets of Patrick Troughton via promotional interviews and of course the obituary in 1987 and I don’t even know what it meant(I was only 8).
This one story is the introduction to the Second Doctor and My Doctor!!!
These two were the perfect pairing just as Liz Sladen and Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee and Katie Manning were.
I'm like the doctor I dont want to see the companions age
I have never seen a scene with jamie before, although I know of him. If this is atypical scene, they should have kept him forever.
He's so much better than the bland companions recently.
Yeah he's not noticeably different in character in this story than in stories from his era.
Jamie's brilliant - probably my favourite companion of the lot.
Jamie was the main companion of the 2nd doctors run 20 of his 21 stories. He's still doing big finish audios, so 2nd and Jamie are still going!
New Who is garbage. They tried to elevate the companions above the Doctor.
@@fjccommish so don’t watch. Plenty of stuff out there I’m sure is more to your tastes

@@matthewmurdock7329 Jamie isnt on 21st century Earth, he couldnt without the TARDIS
i like how via the signifiers of the two actors age and the different tardis, Season 6B is sort of forced to be at least somewhat canon
"Look at that!"
"It's...in colour!"
Was this at the point when TV transitioned to colour?
I actually had a high school teacher who once got in trouble for convincing an entire grade color did not exist before the 1930s and only appeared in glimpses until the 1970s as a lesson on how propoganda can lead a population astray.
admir your diplomatic skills!
Why is no one talking about the set itself? The set is the normal 1980s set and the console was the 1975-1983 console that was taken out of storage for a “retro” look for the 2nd doctor’s TARDIS. they did an okay job for a tight budget for a small scene, though I don’t see why they couldn’t have pulled a wooden chair and a table from somewhere since the 2nd doctor’s tardis had those
TIME TRAVEL IS DANGEROUS
Because time traveller can change his or her mind from avoiding dangerous time period to travelling to Jurassic period.
Ahh yes Classic Who miss those days
Just imagine if a New Who episode opened in that way! Starting with Christopher Eccleston and Rose, say, and then cutting to Peter Capaldi and Clara ...
That would take more imagination than the current - or last - writing team could hope to achieve. And it would make a lot of fans happy, and apparently I've been told that some creative actually WANT to tick off certain fans. I don't pay attention to any of the politics involved in Fandoms anymore, it's so contentious. I want to judge episodes on their own merits. But I have to say, I will never understand how a company that is based around capitalism would actually WANT paying customers to no longer spend time or money on their product. It's sad, really, to see Fandoms at each others throats. Oh well. We still have the older episodes, and the first ten years or so of the new show.
0:05 sublime transition from Black and white to Colour.
Let's be honest, besides that Patrick got grey hair, he didn't age at all when he started filming this compaired to his original time on the show.
@Celedam Woah, really? Cool! Thanks for sharing! :D
I love the fact that Patrick wouldn't dye his hair or wear a wig, reminds me of Cesar Romero in the Joker role on Batman '66. Also ties into the S6B Fan Theory quite well, as a matter of pure coincidence
i dont think it was a coincidence. the S6B theory existed before this was aired via some old comics published in the interim between 2 and 3, and it hinged on the 2nd doctor working for the time lords. the time lords who are said to have dual control of the tardis in this scene.
@@SorchaSublime nah I see what you're saying pal, but it was just genuinely how Troughton rolled, man didn't like hair dye or wigs innit
nope, NOT a coincidence!!
Theres never been as good a male companion since Jamie
@EmmaJaneMurdock It's not just a fan theory anymore. The BBC has included it in their episode guide, and it has also been blessed by the script editor from that time, Terrance Dicks. That makes it official, as far as I'm concerned.
There is a Big Finish short story starring Frazer Hines that takes place in between the events of this story, I can't remember the title thougj
second doctor would be alot of fun to travel with well they all would except maybe early sixth when he is unstable.
Well, at least this gives us a rough idea what it would've look like had 2nd and Jamie continued on for another 16 years.
This was the last time Pat played the 2nd Doctor before he died
These two hadn't lost a step.
@DefenderOfEnglish Ah, I didn't know all that! That's cool to know. Thanks!
Maybe this episode doesn't take place in season 6b but in the far future where the Doctor is revisiting some old faces. However Gallifrey's fate have to be retcon again to have Two working for the time lords
I liked the chemistry between him and MC Colly B, their doctors had such different personalities.
And in one scene the doctor who canon was bent over backwards for the 2nd time since they made the Brigadier a maths teacher.
1:52 Checking the bowtie. Bowties are cool.
@LordZontar I know; they're perfect throughout the whole story, and their chemistry is just as strong as ever.
So, season 6b really is a thing. Did the Doctor go and pick Jamie back up while he was working for the Time Lords/CIA?
*Big Question:* Did the BBC and the _Doctor Who_ production team actually put the console (last used by Peter Davison in "The King's Demons") in storage for two years until they used it for this scene? Was it a "back up" prop in case its successor (the futuristic console used for the rest of the Classic series' run) was unreliable?
I would guess they might have kept it for possible use in exhibitions etc. as the 20th anniversary festivities had been very successful.
@Malecha813 Me too. One of my top favorite Doctor-Companion duos. :)
Considering this season 6B... After this story was concluded, the 2nd Doctor explained that this other highlander they once met in a previous post War Games Trial story was the result of the forbidden breeding between Time Lords and humans. Something the Time Lords consider an abomination with all such offspring needing to be eradicated - except for maybe one who will inherit all the regenerations of the others as well as their knowledge of Gallifrey - which isn't Zeist.
Random thought which makes no sense, but it just popped in there.
My 2 absolute favourite companions are Jamie and Sarah Jane. I do like Capt Jack and River but they're not constant companions.
Jamie also holds the record of being in EVERY ONE of the 2nd doctors stories, bar two. He wasnt in Power of the Daleks, or the three doctors, he was in everything else. NO other companion can claim this
Can't stand River, frankly. Possibly the most irritating character I've ever encounted... 🤷♂️
@garoo1980 Yeah, I never really noticed it, and I think it's cool that they put what effort they could into it. :)
So this is where 6B came from. Cause 2nd Doctor never mentioned Time Lords till his final episode.
This and the Five Doctors, where the Second Doctor can remember what happened to Jamie and Zoe at the end of the War Games, even though he supposedly regenerated right after
0:50 so like...Season 6B yeh?
Who here thinks this takes place after the War Games? I mean, we never see Troughton turn in Pertwee in that story. It's quite possible he aged a few hundred years.
No your absolutely right all the 2nd doctor in multi doctor stories take place after The War Games people argue it isn't haven't got a clue
In the 5 doctors 2nd says to the brigadier that it's the fourth time he met him and mentions Omega
When he meets the hallucinations of Jamie and Zoe he says the Timelords wiped your memories of me.
In this story in this scene he mentions having left victoria to study graphology which we know she stayed behind in Fury from the deep ( must have re encountered each other)
He also mentions sometime shortly after this scene that he has been set on a mission by the Timelords.
So I'm pretty sure he worked for them to shave time of his exile and got his memory wiped when turned into 3rd.
I personally prefer Big Finish’s explanation as to how this story fits in during season 5.
@@EditedAF987 interesting. Please could you elaborate further?
@@Daldi564 well, the Doctor, Jamie and Victoria ended up encountering a Timelord constable called Pavo who they were forced to work with in order to close a black hole that threatened to consume a space research station.
However, in the process Pavo’s TARDIS was destroyed, and so the Doctor offered to help him complete his mission in talking Dastari out of his time travel experiments. So Pavo gave the Doctor a stattenheim remote which changed the console room layout and the Doctor and Jamie left after dropping Victoria off at the research station’s library.
After the Doctor completed his mission, Pavo erased the TARDIS teams memories of their encounter so that he wouldn’t have to arrest them.
The story is called “The Black Hole” and I’d recommend checking it out as there’s a whole other twist that I left out of my explanation above
@@EditedAF987 I'll look into it somewhen and come to a judgement as to whether the above clip is set before or after the War Games.
does youtube have this full eps?
Did they have to redesign Tom Baker's/Peter Davison's TARDIS for this adventure, or was it kept in storage for a few years????
That would be an interesting dynamic. They would just be disagreeing and despising each other the whole episode. Also, although 10 is usually a pretty nice guy, he can be crabby when provoked, so 6 might bring out the worst in him. But of course in the end, they would part on somewhat decent terms. :)
@spikelilgirl Oh, I love them too! They are amazing. And that would have been absolutely FANTASTIC if Jamie could have come back! I believe there are actually some audio adventures with Jamie and the sixth Doctor, so I bet those are good!
@ChrisJMichaels What specifically do you mean? If you're trying to say it's an unnecessary stereotype, Jamie's from the 1700s, when Scots wore kilts all the time. :)
the asteroid doesn't look like Demon's run? I wonder what Amy would think about Doctor Troughton and Jamie. Well, Jamie is Scottish like her, so maybe she would like him.
Amy probily would be flirting with him lol
that is the 4th dr tardis console
1:41 it sounds like Matt smith series 5-7a interior sound
Patrick and Fraser had great chemistry together
Someone from Gallifrey which acts as a type of secret service must have made the 2nd Doctor do this mission in exchange of looking the other way and misleading the others hunting him down, since he was on the run from his people at the time, and erased his and Jamie's memory of it afterwards, since Jamie never heard of the word 'timelord' until the 2nd Doctor had no choice but to contact them which led to his trial and saying goodbye to Jamie and Zoe.
@Celedam Well, yes, there's also THAT theory. :)
obviously, the time lords plucked 2 and jamie out of their timestream, dumped them here, then when it was over, put them back and wiped their memories of this adventure.
@mylestewart They probably didn't have the second Doctor's console anymore. :/
wasnt the console still suppose to be the first doctor's console? (we did see the 3rd doctor use the 1st console)
though i just assume the didnt have it anymore
Yeah, plus even if they did have the first console, it was in bad condition by the war games, and it was expensive to recreate the original set from the 60s, however, they did still have the late 70s/early 80s console in storage, and that console was used to give a vintage look. Maybe one day we can get a special edition of this story and the second doctor and Jamie could be greenscreened onto the original 60s set, it is possible nowadays.

@BigDon62 Hahaha...Nice. :D
Ha! Good one!
Like from black and white to color city in space effects
I like seeing Two and Jamie turn up, but I can't help feeling that they weren't quite in character for this serial. The Doctor tends to treat Jamie like an inferior being, but in the original run of the show, they were great friends, and the Doctor treated him as an equal. Still a good story though.
Jamie is like 40 here and the Doctor still treats him like a kid lol
Well, I guess if you're 500 years old then 40 is like a kid to you
Frazier Hines looks amazing, he really doesn't looked to have aged a ton from the 60s shows.
@shahoney My theory is that in this kind of episode, no one cares AT ALL whether the old Doctors look authentic; they're just thrilled to see them. :)
The dislike came from a Dalek 😂😂
