The gravel pan will put the icing on the cake 🥰
Stay tuned for that!
I have a friend that has a very nice original 1939 merc just like yours. Every time you post a video on it i send him the thumbnail. Hes furious. Please keep taking more originality from that Mercury so I can continue to torment him THANK YOU Matt!!!
Hahahah love it!
😂
Loving it, I think tucking the bumper makes a big difference
With the trunk shaved and smoothed, the fenders smoothed and the '42 tail lights flushed in the bumper, the bumper over-riders (in HS (class of '73) we called 'em "bumperettes") kind of hit a sour note. To me, that is.
If I felt I absolutely had to keep them, I would look at flipping them upside down which would lower the perceived weight and bulk and would be consistent with the flowing shape and smoother appearance that was achieved with the top chop, roof re-shape and shaving and smoothing of the trunk and fenders.
But, hey, that's just me....! 🤔
Loving the project, Matt! Your attention to detail and craftsmanship is Top Drawer.
Wowzer! The person who commented on the bumpers the last couple of videos should be happy now, I sure am. This is really a beautiful yet understated custom.
Glad you like it!
LOVE THEM (the lights) ! Tucking the bumpers in is also nice! Really enhances the overall look of the Merc ! I REALLY like that you did not copy someone's design but came up with your own design, MUCH BETTER!
Thanks! I wanted to give it my own spin.
Wow you went a direction I had never considered, and it is a genius move. The lights in the bumper look like they were meant to be there originally. Finding the correct width lenses in your stash and in-setting them in the bumper really looks good. Also getting the license plate to fit in the perimeter of the bumper keeps the lines you have created on the rear unfettered. Finally, being also of the OCD persuasion myself has proved to be an asset in my professional career as it obviously has in yours. There is no issue there at all. I love the look of the bumper assembly and appreciate how you tucked it in. A new gravel pan with some beads for strength and the rear will come together perfectly. Again, this is one cool ride that you will be proud of for many years to come. Thanks again for sharing this masterfully crafted custom!
It's all about the details!
Absolutely love the way this turned out! So simple, form meets function and doesn't draw attention from the beautiful sweep of the rear and fenders! Go Iron Trap, keep moving forward!
Thank you so much! That was the thought behind it all. Less is more here.
I wasnt sure at first about the '41 tail lights, but they look good on that bumper!
Thanks! It’ll all come together as we finalize everything
The Merc just keeps getting better and better. Love the craftsmanship. Have a great weekend.
Thanks! It’s getting there!
@@IronTrapGarage You guys are on a roll with that car.
Looks really good. Those acorn lights sound like a smart idea.
Just Totally awesome. Thanks for keeping the old alive. In my next life, I'll own one, BUT I get to watch you'all
That looks really good. I always thought that the bumper was mounted too far from the rear of the car and the original tail lights were almost comical. Those lights and moving the bumper in towards the car makes the rear look so much neater and integrated with the car now. A gravel board will finish things off nicely. Its a really cool custom now.
Coming along really well guys. Cant wait to see what you bring to wheels of time and gasket goons.
My grandpa had a 50/51 mercury stashed. The rear bumper has round lights mounted and "mercury" garnish.
Eh ten year difference, sorry I never learned to read 😂
Ingenious. Looks way better than having the taillights mounted on the fenders. I'm not 100% sure about the overriders. For me, they kinda break up the flow of the whole rear end. But it still looks pretty damned good!
I'll second that. If the plan is to clean up the rear, it would be interesting to pop off the overriders and compare back to back. Also, a little better form a safety standpoint because the overriders partially block the lights to either side.
Agree. To my tastes, between the overriders, tail lights, plate and pipes, I find the center of the rear end too busy. I would eliminate the overriders. I love the frenched in tail lenses, but I would have spaced them a little wider, either where the overriders are now, or maybe just slightly wider.
Turn the overiders upside down with the points up 😮
Nice to see. Very well thought out. Good to see Moon walking through too. Sometimes it's easy to just do what others are doing. But everything your doing to this beyond simple or cookie cutter. Each time I see that line behind the rear glass it says ''this is what it should be''.
Thanks! I really appreciate it.
I been wanting to comment about doing overrider tail lights for the last few videos haha kinda like what fish did from the choppers.
Looks neat Matt good job
Perhaps small contour matching backup lights in the shortened overrides?
Hey Matt, lovin' the tail lights in the bumper! I was gonna suggest additional turn signal/brake lights outboard, but I really like the effect of your original design. Primo job! And the button license plate light idea really works! Minimalist!!!
Thanks for the feedback, glad you like the minimalist approach!
Matt, love the mods ,licience plate position gives it a low profile look and tailights perfect. the filler plate add on ,excellent choice and bringing the bumper closer to the body perfect.Looking badass! 👍🔥🔥Montreal Quebec Canada 🇨🇦
Glad you like it!
Nicely done. Very well thought out and different. Looks killer.😊
Thanks! We’re happy with how it’s turning out.
Looks much better than stock ever could.
Outstanding! Can't wait to see the rear after you have a fresh coat of black lacquer on it!
It will look even better after we paint it!
NICE! Perfectly simple- the exhaust definetly tops that look off!
Thanks for the feedback, we agree!
yep. it's all in the detail. good show😎👍
The lights look great in the bumper with the license plate plates around it’s subtle but classy nice job
Thanks! I like how the rear is shaping up.
Really like the tail light in the bumper. Looking good
bumper looks way better snigged up to the car, and the frenched in tailights in the bumper looks great! Good job.
Thanks, I like how it turned out!
Nice!
bumper changes look great! nice job!
great call on that bumper
Outstanding workmanship look good coming along know. 😊
Thanks, it’s getting there!
I kinda think the bumper would look way better cut 4 or 5 inches off each side with the joint hidden behind the push guards and leave the outer edges untouched. i like the lights in the middle . Nice work Matt
Simple clean and pure look
Looks amazing
Well done 👍👍
Loving the Merc!
RIGHT ON!!!! FANTASTIC
Thanks, we're getting there!
NICE CLEAN & SIMPLE LOOK....I LIKE!
Looking 👀 good. The car is gonna be super smooth.
The only thing I would change is to have the exhaust exits tucked out of sight as it looks a little too busy for my personal taste . Looking forward to the next mod 😎
Looks great!
Very nice work Matt and Steve
Looking good!
Elegant design. Well done.
Pretty slick 🏁
Very nice! I like watching how an idea develops.
Thank you very much!
Looks perfect!
Very nice!
Im so glad to see you tuck the bumper i left a comment on a past video asking if you was going to shorten the bumper brackets love the look
Hey Matt,
I love the look.
After you filled in the original location holes, I couldn't visualize any lights on the body that would fit. This doesn't look like an afterthought.
There were some very cool looking lights used on early motorcycles.
It looks really good guys !!!!!!!!
That looks cool. Definitely noticeable.
Beautiful! Well done!
Hell yeah that’s sweet looking.. great work
Thanks 👍
Great look !
Thinking outside the box and not following trends paid off well in this case. That's a slick look and keeps the tail end of the Merc nice and clean.
Thanks!
Dude!! Cool mod!!! Maybe the exhaust on the other side bumper guards!? ✌️
Zackly the same septin one’s different!! I like it. The tail light bumper mods look fantastic!!
According to most DOT regs, the market (tail) lights are to be the widest point of the body, thus following drivers can determine the size of the vehicle ahead. This mod will not be legal in this case.
@ In 1939 many vehicles had only one tail light from the factory. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) did not require two until somewhere in the 1950’s. The requirement does not retro back
Bet you’re fun at parties.
Tucking the bumpers is the way to go. Leaving the tail lights off the fenders also works well.
Thanks! It really cleans up the lines.
My new favorite ITG car! Nice work boys!
Right now it is mine too!
i think you made the right choice, matt. i like the overrider look just because but this is super clean and not cookie cutter. fwiw i think a typical accessory plate light would fit right in. sure it's kind of a visial barb but it fits in with the style of this car. (hey moon!)
I’ll keep that in mind!
Nice ! Looks great !
I like the lights. I would turn the overiders upside down. Points up. And the exhaust tips would be chrome clamshells.
Hey Matt,Thet 39 Mercury is looking awesome. Can't wait till you guys are driving it this year. Hopefully we'll see it at the car show.....
We are aiming to have it out and about this year. Hope to see you at a show.
@IronTrapGarage That's great!.... Would you remind us when the show is coming up? I want to make sure put it in the calendar. Thanks!
This project is the essence of Hot Rodding
Thank you!
smart move looks super
I prefer the light in the finder, but yours look good and bright, not dim. The only way to get briter would be LED, and i like the bumper being closer
Very nice... guys. As we know this is the beginning of things to come... Someone mention a gravel pan... Hey a great idea... We will see what the Irontrap experts think of that idea..
Stay tuned!
Nicely corrected
merci cool
Nailed it!!! Awesome job Matt👍👍
Thanks, we're stoked!
@@IronTrapGarage So am I👍👍👍
Looks good, great job.
Love stone guards
It looks great Matt
I like everything about the new light location except the effectiveness of stop lamps placed well below the line of sight on a lowered car. I suppose it depends on how much it will be driven in traffic, but a third light (possibly "frenched" into the trunk lid) would make me much more comfortable driving the car in traffic, even at a show.
love the look
The perfect kustom solution.
Klean.....
Sweat that very nice look..
I'm really conflicted. I like the solution and it steps away frim what many others do...but It seems really crowded in the centre. The 41 lights are slick... i think when I have a go at it... I am thinking I'll use the unique 39 Merc lenses... just outside the outer bumper irons on either side.
Slimline plate frame. Spot on !! Just right.
I wasn't going to comment, but you asked us to. Love the car, the roof chop, the smoothed fenders and trunk lid. I like the tucked rear bumper, and look forward to the gravel pan. I'm worried, though, that forn overtook function with the rear lights. They are too small, too low, and too close together, IMHO. They look cool, but have sacrificed their functionality in the process. I think I would leave them there, and wire them together with some front fog lights, using the brighter filament. Then I would maybe French some larger lights into the rear fenders for tail/brake lights, higher and farther apart.
Love the car! But, hey, you asked what we thought of them....
You’re welcome to your opinion! Definitely chose form in this instance.
looking great matt
❤ it. 😊 ** maybe, as a nod to idiot drivers --> hide a red LED strip high & behind rear top windows. GD .. I hate inattentive drivers. 😢
GLAD to see your version of "custom homage" on THIS channel. You're keeping so much alive in ALL that you do. I applaud you. All of you guys !! 🙌
Very good point. Otherwise you're a minivan target.
Thanks, appreciate the compliments. We’re trying to keep this old nostalgic stuff alive!
Looks killer!!
Looks good, But would look better with the exhaust on the outside.
Of. The Over Riders..
Have you considered 30 inch lake pipes. They Were used used in the fifties. But they No longer Manufacturer them. I made mine from stainless long lake pipes and cut them down for my shoebox
Looking good love the nod to history with the tail lights and the plate surrounded .are you going to look at air bags to help with drive ways ?
If you are worried someone is gonna hit you from behind because the lights are so low I’ve seen VW bug owners with the low snowflake lights take led strips and incorporate them in the rear vent but in your case you could possibly put them in the back of the garnish molding on the rear window and have them come on with the brake lights. You could probably do it discreetly enough they won’t be seen until the brake is applied. Just a thought. To many people on there phones and not paying attention especially to lights that low. Hate to see all this work ruined. Great vid an always thanks for sharing.
You’ve come a long way from “Perfectly Shitty” with this ‘39 Merc!
The trouble with building a really nice custom is it gets so nice you gotta make everything on it that nice.
Reminds me of the reporter who asked the craftsman who was finishing details on the giant brass doors of Rockefeller Center (or maybe it was Detroit’s Fisher Building). Reporter asked the craftsman how he knew when the door was done. “When they take it away from me,” replied the craftsman.
Haha that is a good way to decide when it’s “done”!
Looks amazing. Thank you for not cutting those gorgeous art deco over riders
Looks so good
Thanks!
thanks guys1
OOOOps, spoke too soon! HAHA! Actually like the acorn light idea- may mooch it for a couple of mine!
EXCELANTE'! Another feather in the cap of this great car!
Thanks! It’s shaping up nicely.
Looks good almost looks like it’s meant to be that way.
You're cooking with gas now Daddy-O 😎 completely Coolsville !!
Michaelangelo Matt❤
Haha, thanks for the kind words!
Just adding my two cents. On the 39 Merc with your new taillights go with an LED bulb instead of the 1157 they are much brighter. I like your new taillights but as I did with my own car 56 Pontiac Star Chief I wanted the brightest lights possible so people can see them and hopefully I wouldn’t get rear ended. Put an LED in one side and the 1157 in the other side turn the lights on and see the difference.
You need to add two of those lights on the outside of the bumperettes.
That's a cool idea, but I think it would clutter up the rear end.
That license plate box with 666-666 on it 👹!
Haha so cool! Left it hanging in the shop
man sure good
@ 23:43 Moondog approves!!
Looks cool good job
Thank you! Cheers!
The pipes fall in line with the lenses. nice symmetry
Thanks! Symmetrical always wins!
I don't know, this looks pretty cool but I think I'd try the exhaust pipes on the outside of the bumper guards. Kinda looks like too much goin on in the middle of the back of the car.
