The Jedi Order and Sith Empire were opposed to each other for most of galactic history. During these conflicts both organizations would suffer huge losses but also achieve greatness under pressure they placed each other in. The Jedi and Sith conflicts are great reminder that struggle can sometimes be a good thing.

Something that always interested me about the "need for conflict" in Star Wars is how the Jedi and Sith react when they both face something out of their depth, like the few instances of the galaxy getting third-partied, such as Zakuul and the Yuuzhan Vong. Zakuul is the more interesting example to me because both sides had to surrender to this sophisticated society with alien tech that came out of thin air. Then, if you play SWTOR, you have to make an Eternal Alliance of Jedi and Sith from either faction.
Common foe and all that, sure, but the game makes the distinction that the people who were part of the Eternal Alliance were leaving their factions entirely. Even after Zakuul falls, the Republic and Sith personnel who stay with the player are there because they got used to the idea of coexisting for a common goal, even Jedi and Sith. The only thing left to tug at them was the partisanship of the Empire and Republic both trying to gain the Alliance as an ally for their own gains, even to the point of sabotaging them. The most recent expansions of the game revolve around another civil war between the Mandalorians (shocker).
It is kinda sad that just as in real life, peace is not a lasting thing in the galaxy. Do we chalk up this endless cycle to the will of the Force? Is the galaxy just destined to suffer?

I’m…not so sure about this. True, peacetime can stagnate people and governments. The Jedi were unable to sense the Dark Side in not just Palpatine, but plenty of Jedi throughout the war. And the Republic had no true military to fight threats to itself or its members, leaving that job not just to planetary defense forces and the small Judicial Forces, but also the private militaries of massive corporations.
However, I don’t think that means we need enemies. Challenges, I can agree with. Perhaps just after the Battle of Ruusaan, the Jedi could have written up a rule to study the Dark Side to recognize any threats, just in case. Eternal vigilance and all that. It probably wouldn’t be an easy thing to maintain since it would mostly have no use, but it’s something. And there were plenty of enemies for the Jedi to fight if the Republic let them. Pirates, crime gangs, and eventually the corporations when they got out of hand. Sure, they aren’t Force-Sensitive foes, but still, better than nothing.
My issue is that the title of this video kind of sounds counter to world peace. Don’t get me wrong, my favorite characters in all of fiction are clone troopers and I like war stories and seeing characters grow stronger overtime, but wouldn’t it be better if we lived in a world without hardship? At least, it would be better for future generations since we would find such peacetime to be boring.
Also, I’m not sure about Alan’s view on Balance in the Force. Now, I’m saying this as a Canon fan which doesn’t have the same origins for the Jedi. At least in Canon, it so far seems like the Light Side of the Force is the natural part of it while the Dark Side feels like a plague. Even Cal who now wields some of the Dark Side only uses a little of it, certainly not on an equal level to his use of the Light Side. The Dark Side is a part of everyone, but it seems like something that should be extremely limited if not outright destroyed. Even in Legends, the Imperial Knights of the Fel Empire don’t really maintain Alan’s view of balance. While they aren’t strictly Light Side users and are more like Grey Jedi, they’re also trained to reject the Dark Side of the Force and even overthrow the Emperor they are supposed to protect if they fall from the Light to the Dark. I honestly think the Chosen One Prophecy was created given how the Sith gave constantly gone into hiding and re-emerged to fight the Jedi. Someone just thought ahead when they made the prophecy.

After the Second Siege of Constantinople by the Arabs, the Roman Empire and the Abbasid Caliphate continued to engage in launching raids against each other. With the exception of invasion into Anatolia by Caliph Harun al-Rashid because Autokrator Nikephoros I refused to pay him tributes, the governments of the Empire and the Caliphate were never officially at wars with each other ever since then despite the raids against each other across the frontiers that happened annually. Everything was going well for both the Roman Empire and the Abbasid Caliphate because they have each other as enemies for their own political agendas until the Seljuk Turks arrived and that led to the authorities of the Abbasid Caliphs to be reduced to just the religious figureheads in Baghdad while the Roman Empire lost a lot of territories in Anatolia as a result.
On the contary, the opposite happened to the Jedi and the Republic. The Jedi and the Republic needed the Sith and the Empire in order to preserve the balance within the galaxy. But if the Sith Empire is not an option in eyes of some people, then the Mandalorians will sufficed. But the point is that to the lack of the external threats, they ended up becoming arrogant and dogmatic in their own beliefs. The Jedi are blinded to the point that they failed to see the Republic has become the very thing they supposed to oppose while the Republic itself has somewhat come to believe that its own government is the best in the galaxy without even knowing that it has already taken the first step to become the Empire when the ethnocide against the Mandalorians was approved by the Senate.

Lucus would disagree that the Dark Side needs to exist. In the prequel dvd extras, he said that restoring balance to the force means the final destination of the Dark Side. The dark is a corruption of the force and bending it to the Siths will. Whereas the Jedi seek balance of the force by surrendering their entire being to it and becoming one with the force.

Awesome video as usual Allen, I love your view on the Force (it pretty much aligns exactly with mine), but you've made one big, though relatively common, mistake.
8:42 It was actually the opposite. Those Je'daii who leaned too close to the Dark were sent to Bogan, where they could look and meditate upon Ashla. Vice-versa for those who leaned too far into the Light, so they could look and meditate upon Bogan.
May seem counter-intuitive, but philosophically it was meant to have the individual be constantly in view of the part of the Force from which they had fallen away and thus come out of balance, and with that perspective, find their way back.

What do you think of AFanWithTooMuchTime's conjecture that there are two Dark Sides: the Dark Side of passion, willpower and emotion which is part of the Light-Dark balance, and the Dark Side of unnatural, all-consuming corruption which is fundamentally a force of imbalance, and the Jedi-Sith conflict is a result of both sides conflating the two? In other words it's not Ashla vs. Bogan, it's Ashla and Bogan vs. Abeloth. They have a video on it on their channel.

Inspiring as always Allen. A practical way for people to spend less time on screens is to start reading more books on paper. Check out the classics written in the 1950s and 60's - Ray Bradbury, Robert A. Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Frank Herbert. It is important for the brain but also good to see the way the original stories in these books have been adapted to screen - there are deep lessons in the choices made regarding what to focus on and what to take out completely, how characters are re-designed for screen presentation etc. These choices are affecting our minds and society - when you read the original books you will have many AHA moments and realize how the manipulation is taking place. Obviously the original stories also have their goals of forming opinions and shaping society - in looking at the process from the vantage point of history you will learn more about how to think for yourself. This is what Allen is trying to teach us as well.

I think the Jedi are more selesnya (green/white) while the sith are more rakdos (red/black), both tend to be pretty extreme and both tend to lack the colour blue (Though the sith tend to have more blue, as studying the force in a scientific way tends to be shunned by the jedi). Both are actually not that good in my opinion, the sith obviously evil, and the jedi a sort of banal evil. Especially the jedi order from the galactic civil war.
This was just something I thought about, I hope people will think this is interesting.

While failure to pressure test is a reason many kung fu schools and styles are subpar a more insidious reason is this: the Chinese Communist Party, after their victory over the Nationalists, rounded up every Master they could find and out a bullet in their head. So for a large number of systems only students remained to pass what was left on. And because it was tradition to only teach a single student everything you knew the vast majority of these styles no longer understood the practical application of their own arts.
Something similar happened in Korea during the Japanese invasion where the Martial Art Takyeon was exterminated by the occupying forces. After the liberation the Koreans took what little was left, mixed it with basic karate, and created modern tae kwon do.

2:27 common, you should know better than to call Social Security a “Ponzi scheme”. Social Security is a tax-based entitlement. While one of the trust funds for Social Security is looking like it will be insolvent in a few years, all we would need to do to buoy it up is raise the income level of those paying the Social Security tax. Also, Social Security has never been a pension fund (wherein people can plan on it providing enough income to live as they did during their working life). Instead Social Security is a supplemental retirement plan to help keep the elderly out of poverty (in this Social Security has been a resounding success).

I still can never decide just what is *THE* dumbest thing in Star Wars canon, the Rule of Two, or the Rusan Reformation. Each is not only inherently inane, but blatantly, utterly ****ing stupid, and I can't decide which one is the dumbest.
The third dumbest thing in SW canon is easier to decide by far. #3 is the Tarkin Doctrine, and only the most scared and broken fools would think it was a good idea, so of course Wilf and Sheev thought it was great. It's well behind the top two slots, but also well in front of any other contenders for the title.

Qui-Gon wasn't shit in fighting, it was his favourite form IV being not effective in that area, along with it's emphasis on aggressive offense being it's downside against Maul's double bladed saber (known for being a good tool for defense) and a better form for attack that didn't rely on acrobatics & heavy force usage. I'd say it was just a bad matchup for Qui Gon.
As for kung fu- it all depends on how it's taught.
You don't see shaolin monks fight much, since in shaolin they mainly train forms and breaking stuff, the kung fu presentations basically, since shaolin kung fu's main point is to spread kung fu around the world, to show the world how difficult and beautiful it is.
Those who want to fight- there is no substitute for sparring, so sanda (chinese kickboxing) and quinna (joint locks/soft-style grappling). Some kung fu schools have it, and while stuff they teach is outdated compared to modern kickboxing and wrestling- if it's put on top of amazing athletism many hardcore kung fu practitioners have it produces great fighters anyway.
When it comes to MMA- kung fu is severely lacking in ground game, so no kung fu practitioner is gonna go far in mma without some brazilian jiujitsu or general mma training.
To add what I said about shaolin kung fu- those guys in the temple train hardcore (8-12 hours/day). They don't know how to fight, but put them to a month or three of kickboxing training and you can produce some real monsters. So kung fu definitely helps there. They can become great karateka & taekwondo practitioners as well, since they are flexible & kung fu forms are much harder to memorize & perform than karate&taekwondo forms, so they can repeat all the moves in like 5 minutes of watching.

there is a reason despite being abominations to the force, the force let Sith comes back time and time again, because let's face it, without them, Jedi become dogmatic and corrupt, also they horde all the force power in the galaxy, and absolute power corrupts absolutely, so the force let the Sith comes in and just kill off all the corrupt jedi, then they rebuild themselves, take out the Sith, then rince and repeat.

Well it's the commentary of Earth Human's lack of Wisdom to move past said duality. Is life really supposed to be struggle or is that The Earth Human concept? Isn't odd or sad that Earth is one of the only planets in the Galaxy where its inhabitants have to pay to live on it? I think this is why the concept of Grey Jedi's is so controversial, it poses a 3rd Philosophical option, find a balance and stop being controlled by both sides. In a sense find yourself and be true to yourself then you can find a balance. Jedi and Sith are both in denial, they think they are in "Balance" while in fact it's more denial of being out of balance than anything. So the idea is for 2 "Collective" forces to create a balance, which seems cruel. Why can't individuals find balance instead of 1 force user having to make a choice between one imbalance or another imbalance aka Light or Dark. Why not find that balance within oneself, as not to be a slave to either side of The Light/Darkside? I think that's what scares both The Sith and The Jedi, they don't want balanced people who think for themselves and wield the Force, b/c that might deplete both sides ranks when beings realize that they need to find balance first and no longer deny feelings. I mean if you think about it, The Jedi and Sith are both dysfunctional on many levels.

Alan has always had a misconception about balance. George Lucas has said that the dark side is an imbalance in the Force, and that restoring balance means wiping out the dark side which is like a cancer. Saying that balance means equal parts light side and dark side is like saying the optimal state of the human body is an equal number of healthy and cancerous cells. It's correct that passionate emotions like fear and anger are natural and people should not deny them, but Jedi are supposed to master their emotions so they don't lead them towards the dark side. The emotions themselves are not the dark side.

    • @holeeshi9959

the biggest misconception is Jedi = light side. a Jedi certainly THINK they are the light side, but in many cases they do embody the dark side(no always anger, but oftentimes suspicion, fear, and pride, especially pride, it's ALL over the Jedi council), to put it simply, the Jedi order are infected by dark side by the the prequel trilogy, the sith using dark side to kill off jedi is the force using chemo to treat itself, and when Vader and Palpatine died and the only surviving Jedi is Luke, it's a successful treatment.

I'm not sure you can say the Jedi's stagnation was a big problem for the Jedi when it took them a thousand years to fall. Perhaps you can disagree with the fable, but I think it is clear that within the movies lack of sith not the problem. Within the movies balance is not the balance of light and dark, peace and war, but rather a balance like a balanced diet, finding the happy medium. If the force is a diet that needs to be balanced, the dark side is cookies.

Instead thinking the sith were totally different from the Jedi and you were born with the darkside and not fell to it. I think the main reason for the fall was because they thought that Sith were a separate species instead of there own anger or darkness.

The Jedi talked about balance in the force without seeking balance. You either achieve balance by recognizing you are neither totally good or totally evil, or by all of the Jedi except 2 dying to balance the 2 Sith.
