It wouldn’t be much of a video, it’s just OEM with cut and painted caps. I was thinking of adding a hidden tow hook. I suppose if I did that it would make for more than a 2 minute video of cutting plastic 🤷🏽♂️
Jon, great video. I am also a interested in the bumper as it looks really good and seems like an easy modification. Could you add some more detailed footage on the bumper. Those 2 minutes you mentioned would be enough. Greetings from Germany and a happy New year for you, your family and the whole Bleepin Jeep Crew.
Because of this video, I'm seriously considering installing one in my MJ and one in my ZJ. Of course, not wanting to leave well enough alone, I'm thinking of installing a night vision camera on my ZJ, to view thru the head unit.
Hey 301steady, did you end up getting one of these into your ZJ? I've been looking for something for my '98 ZJ. It's not my daily driver but the stock unit is toast and I'm debating whether or not I should go w/ a simple & cheap single DIN or getting something like this Joying unit here.
@@estevannegrete2891 Hello Estevan. I actually have not installed an Android Head Unit. I've been wanting one; but, all units I've found pop up. I haven't found one that pops down, away from the glare shield. My stock unit hasn't worked in ten years; but, really, I've been thinking about taking the radio head unit out, along with my amp, and air bag computer and taking them all to a little shop in Van Nuys called shop.modulerepairpro.com/ . They say they can fix all of these units. My ZJ is my daily driver; so, I have to really think about when to totally down it and do this. I plan on driving my ZJ to KOH in a couple of weeks and I've got some plans for Mojave Road, late February. Maybe March or April, I'll finally break down and do this. Let me know if you find an aftermarket head unit with good results; otherwise, at least we have an option for rebuilding our stock units.
I had this exact same unit with the steering wheel control (an absolute MUST with this unit) also but got frustrated with it and ended up removing it. The main problem is that it doesn't truly power down when you turn your vehicle off. That means if you are connected to apple Carplay it stays connected and and continues to stream music if you are still in wifi and bluetooth range. Your Iphone stays connected to apple car play since the unit doesn't truly shut down. Also, half the time it would try to launch apple carplay through Z-link and it would take 10-15 minutes to connect. Other times it would connect right away. The audio part of this unit is OUTSTANDING! Unfortunately, the Carplay issues and the fact that I have to disconnect bluetooth to use obd functions was enough to have me pull this out of my dash. Now I have a Sony AX-8000 ($$) and am very happy so far, especially since the "Gaia" app works on Carplay (beta). I'm keeping my eye out for firmware updates to see if that addresses any of the issues and perhaps at that point give it another try. BleepinJohn, you rock! Keep the great videos coming!!!
i like how it mounts to the dash. it would be perfect for the din and a half head unit in my k5 blazer. i don’t want a flip out head unit but it is a little pricey and i don’t have obd2. great video it gives me an extra option if i can’t find something i like
Nice find, JVC used to make a couple single dins with video screens It was small, but looked pretty good, but that was like 10 years ago so they don't have all the new technology. I just put a double din in my MJ that has the xj 2001 interior. A company now makes a double din trim piece, though it does require some cutting on plastic, so once you go double din you can't go back.
Xj owner here and in the market for a car stereo. This unit and accessories have several bad reviews. It fits perfect, but buyer beware. Personally, I'm going to go with saving a little while longer and going with Alpine. Never had a bad Alpine, this will be my 3rd one, so I'll let yall know as soon as income tax return shows up.
Awesome, I've been looking for a unit like this for my TJ. There are kits to make the TJ dash into a double din but I didn't really want to go that route. Then there are the one with the screen that mechanically comes out of the unit into display mode, but most would block the vents or controls. Seems like this would fit nicely into that space.
Looks great, but bit expensive for me. I've been toying with fitting an Atoyo or similar head unit built into the centre dash to replace my 'cutting edge' Infinity radio cassette! Sadly nobody makes a 2din specific install kit for the XJ so I'll have to do a bit of butchering with a universal 2din cage & trim surround. Hopefully it won't end up looking shit! Thanks for posting
I installed a double din Joying head unit in my XJ a couple years ago. The only major complaint I have is that the touchscreen is iffy and the volume controls are part of the touchscreen, so volume up and down is hard to do quickly. It's annoying. Also, software updates were a big pain. Edit: before anyone squawks about the double din thing, yes, I had to cut my dash, make custom mounts, and customize my bezel to accommodate it.
where do you obtain the software upgrade for the dash meters? And were you also able to control your electric fan on the radiator with the software upgrade?
You should be able to place it behind the bezel. I’ve measured it and the exact lid screen is precisely the size of the hole. You just have to build a mount so that the 1 din is in the right place
Well I'll be damned. Ive been looking a headunit for my ZJ and thunk I may have found one. Ill look more into this unit when I have time and Thank you!

So you run the transmission reverse wire from the unit to the positive for the reverse lights in the taillight? This has been a sticking point in finishing. Also, it looks like you ignored the emergency brake wire. On some head units this locks out certain features like DVD and Bluetooth connection. Did you have to do anything to fool the E brake wire? Great vid, thanks!
Great video! Still haven't answered my question Jon, where in Pa. are you? Not exact just near. noticed you have the same hood latch setup I have in the Bumble Jeep. Did you do the gas props as well? I have them but haven't installed them yet as I don't like the mounting hardware they came with. (holes for the ball attachments are too big) Did you ever post the rest of the engine swap? Was looking forward to them but must have missed them. Happy New Year and God bless.
running that OBD2 all the time to watch your gauges is a good way to fry your harness and ECM. Insurance companies handed those out to save money on insurance for good driving. They melted harnesses and totaled cars. Not meant to be used constantly.
I’m trying to figure out how to get a screen in my 91xj. Saw a guy relocate everything down and eliminate the center vent. I think a Sony ax 1000 might fit without doing anything
I have a different version from Joying. It is a pain to update the unit and the apps, fights to stay connected to wifi, auto opens apps at start up and I can't get it to stop and it's a slow interface. Don't get me wrong, I like the unit mainly just because I don't have to use my phone to navigate. But if there was a different company doing single din touch screens I'd toss my $300 unit and switch.
It sure will!! Via wireless Apple CarPlay, or via Bluetooth, and you could also use your phone to make a WiFi hotspot for the radio to connect to for internet access on the radio all the time when you're in it... Fully supports the iPhones yup
I just bought this same stereo, based on videos like this. My interface/launcher looks like just a super generic tablet, and not at all like this. Did you have to install a new launcher or something? Additionally, when I put the stereo in there is no sound coming from it.
I ordered one of these 3 weeks ago. Installed it this week. Then I found out that the GPS is cell phone based. It isn't a true GPS. It comes with a GPS antenna, but it's pretty useless. You cannot navigate unless you have a data connection. I ordered it under the impression that it would navigate something akin to a Garmin or Tom Tom. I take my Cherokee out to some pretty desolate areas, areas where a cell signal is weak at best. Areas where a GPS is pretty handy. BUT THE PISS-POOR EXCUSE FOR A GPS WITH THIS SYSTEM WON'T WORK WITHOUT A CELL SIGNAL OR INTERNET CONNECTION. Don't buy this for the GPS. Unless you want to make it a wifi hotspot. Yeah, you'll have to pay for your GPS via a sim card.
Yes it would, but for a tj I would recommend Insane audio because it’s waterproof and dustproof. With this unit you wouldn’t have to worry about going topless or off-roading.
any idea if you can install other android apps on it? I use a mapping app called Maprika for the off-road parks in my area. Ive got a tablet on my dash for it. It'd be awesome if I could move that to an in-dash unit. Thanks for the video!
In the video at Minutes 13:40, the video discusses manual control of fan? can this android-joying unit, software (add-on) really control the XJ electric radiator fan? and what company can this software-add-on (for meters and fan control) be purchased from?
Curious does it tell you how much gas you have left like will it say when your about to be on empty? That would be a cool feature I know the classic xjs have that dash above but my 01 sport doesn’t
The white wire for steering controller, did you connect it to key1 and 2 on the joying unit? I connected it to key one and I can't set the volume knob. When I click the rotary wheel it doesn't stay pressed so I can set it.
Hey Jon, Do you think that it would be possible to mount the Unit further back in the dash and carefully notch out the dash bezel to make it sink in a bit and look less aftermarket?
@@TheKritter91 I doubt it would make it look like a jeep product could always try tho I thought about having one done in old ford motor company font for my f350
Question, Will this head unit work with the stock steering volume wheel controls? I'm hoping to swap a WJ steering wheel into my XJ and use the factory controls.
So your Obdlink LX connects fine? I have a different Joying and the Obdlink LX won't connect. I need it due to the faster data rate to the chinese obd2 dongles, Joying says it's not compatible either.
Do you offroad your xj? I daily mine but also use it for rock crawling and trail riding. My concern is will that face pop off when I'm offroad? I like to listen to music while I'm offroad so just taking the screen off wouldn't be a option.
I have wheeled a several times with it on, and there's no chance of the face popping off, it's very securely mounted. It amazingly doesn't rattle or contact the dash at all though it's very close. I'll be wheeling a lot more this coming year and it doesn't worry me at all. The only thing that I'm slightly concerned about long term is dust, the display seems well sealed, but the in-dash part is definitely not sealed in the slightest
@@DRTJon Thank you very much. I'm probably going to buy one for my jeep. That was my only concern was the screen, if it didn't fall off on you while wheeling I'm sold. Thank you for the reply.
Looks cool. Another great way for our government and China to have even more access to us. They’ll know every detail down to your oil pressure. I’ll keep my 2 XJ’s basic
I get drawn in thinking there is hope for a good aftermarket headunit that isn't stupid ugly fitment and find there is nothing close to a 3"x8" head unit for a ZJ!
Does It have a SD card slot? I know you said the dash cam does, but what about the unit it self? I use an offline map program to DL sat+ street maps (I usually don't have cell service where I wheel, but do have GPS) The satillet images can be very big depending on resolution and miles² so extra storage is important (16gb might not be enough)... I was thinking about just mounting a regular Android tablet (have been using my phone), but this looks incredible!
@@SuperCheese88 Thanks! Looks like the only downside is the single Bluetooth device (bug?). It's not a big deal and I can work around it, so I'm definitely going to look into it... @@Wooskii1 I use a wireless USB game controller (has a USB dongle receiver) and it's plug and play!! Works great for games, I play GTA Vice City and GTA San Andreas games on my Joying all the time, and used to play the old PS1 era games in a emulator using the controller too
Thanks for the info everyone! With 2 USB ports and a micro SD slot, I can't think of any problems without a workaround. It looks like it's pretty powerful by the specs too!
you can download any Android app to it. I don't have any sPod products but I suspect it works! The only app I tried that installs but doesn't seem to work is the DJI app to try and control my DJI Osmo Action camera. I think I could get that working with enough trying though, I expect it's the connection to my iPhone preventing it from working

I wonder if they will do one which says "Jeep"
@@TheKritter91 I doubt it would make it look like a jeep product could always try tho I thought about having one done in old ford motor company font for my f350
Is this unit still working out for you? Anyone else have it that can confirm it's a good unit over time?
I can’t find out how to do the active wallpaper on mine, could you tell me how ?
Question, Will this head unit work with the stock steering volume wheel controls? I'm hoping to swap a WJ steering wheel into my XJ and use the factory controls.
Is there a double den option for this radio?
What kind of bumper end caps are those
Is this unit iPhone compatible as well
Is the unit capable of hands free calls?
Jon, does the company offer an iOS (Apple CarPlay) version? I did not see one on the website. Any other sources anyone know about?
How do you think the 10 inch Joying would look on the XJ Din area?
Just measured XJ Din slot most in could probably do is 9" without encroaching on the AC knobs
Anyone know what adapter he bought ? My joying is on the way and I hate wiring.
does this support direct satelitte radio?
Can you watch youtube while driving with it?
So your Obdlink LX connects fine? I have a different Joying and the Obdlink LX won't connect. I need it due to the faster data rate to the chinese obd2 dongles, Joying says it's not compatible either.
If you cut the trim piece around the radio above the climate controls can you recess it or flush mout it so it will look factory in the XJ?????
We will be recessing the joying unit in my 2008 f350 to look factory will just depend on your size and room you have
how has it held up?
Does anyone know of an OBD-II fix, that uses an Android display, to force the electric radiator fan to turn-on, to add more jeep-XJ engine cooling ?
I used to not be paranoid but I agree tbh😂 when martial law is declared, I'd rather not have them track me into the woods 😁
Will the work on a 95 Sport???
This is neat, but I dont think it will fit as nice in my '90
Alright ...i'm sold. Lol
I get drawn in thinking there is hope for a good aftermarket headunit that isn't stupid ugly fitment and find there is nothing close to a 3"x8" head unit for a ZJ!
How well does the microphone in it work for talking on the phone?
Paul Standaert in a diesel Jeep it’s not been great
But does it fit in a pre-97?
Right. I think you'd have to move heater controls up and take out the bottom bent for this to work. On my 92 at least
It has 2 usb cables you can use to attach external storage to. I don't remember the max size but I used a 64gb thumb stick for movies.
@@SuperCheese88 Thanks! Looks like the only downside is the single Bluetooth device (bug?). It's not a big deal and I can work around it, so I'm definitely going to look into it... (I wonder if a USB hub and or Bluetooth dongle would work🤔) I'm into retro games, it would be sweet to connect 2 game controllers when camping! So many possibilities!
it does have a micro SD slot behind the display, which can be accessed by the Android OS
So you have to have a phone plan for your jeep now?
Joey Sawyer not if you use CarPlay, Android Auto, or you phone’s hotspot
@@DRTJon ok cool thanks
Can you download apps to it, for instance the sPod app for Android?
you can download any Android app to it. I don't have any sPod products but I suspect it works! The only app I tried that installs but doesn't seem to work is the DJI app to try and control my DJI Osmo Action camera. I think I could get that working with enough trying though, I expect it's the connection to my iPhone preventing it from working
