Since the Sunken Cost Fallacy is a fallacy, it would be a sound decision not to fall for it. Netflix should use the 200 Mio for tax payoff and cancel the project. But of course, that will never happen. Also, I think that the show will fail, because there is no audience for it, but that will be hard to tell since Netflix does not give out its numbers

What are you talking about dude? There is no audience for it? For three body problem? It's the most hyped and talked about sci fi book of the decade. The fans of the books are hyping up the show's potential left and right. I hate D&D for what they did to ASOIAF but they've chosen the right property because like GoT this could easily blow up even among more casual audiences who don't really like sci fi. At least if done well.
      That said
      1. The book has interesting concepts but the writing, characters, prose and structure are utter garbage. The VR squences are dumb and mostly pointless. Half the book are scientific and psuedo scientific explenations for the technology in the book. The books are heavily over hyped but the ideas in it, ideas like the dark forest etc etc are very good and had a big impact on sci fi even science since the dark forest is an actual theory now.
      2. When they started making GoT DEI / ESG wasn't such a big thing. I they will Americanize this too much. It's already clear that they are chaning Miao (Han Chinese man) to a Latin American woman. She will probably also take over the protagonist role for the protagonist of the second and third books and become the wallbreaker. In the trailer you can see events that don't happen in the first book etc
That said, while they still had book material they did relatively good in adapting it to the screen. And for this property they can't really run out of books as the trilogy is already finished. But, as I've explained before. These books are nothing like GoT. They are nowhere as long, the remembrance of earth's past books have very shallow characters who you don't care too much for. Like you can't have a red wedding type deal. There are some reveals etc but they rea telegraphed from far in the books.

I honestly hate when people bring up Actress, Tamzin Merchant and say "Oh I bet she's pissed because she was fired by Dumb & Dumber and she's never going to he as good an actress as Emilia Clarke now!" I always correct people; Um. No. Tamzin Merchant saw the absolute SHIT SHOW of the pilot episode where she was; "stranded, half naked in the dark with no flood lights, fire pits and horses running around everywhere, spooked and hitting people....." And she was like; "NOPE NOPE NOPE". And bailed.
People love to shit on Tamzin and I feel so bad for her and for Emilia Clarke tbh :C

Checked out the tv series wiki page:
"In November 2023, executive producer Gao Xiaosong stated on his talkshow 'Who Knows' that the series was nearly finished editing, but is currently over budget, as Netflix spent US$200 million to produce the eight episodes. With an average budget of US$25 million per episode, it would already be the most expensive Netflix production to date and the second most expensive television series after The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
How do 8 episodes cost over $200 million? (I mean.. you answered that - incompetence - but geez.) They have an experienced co-writer Alexander Woo on the series too. Do you think that will help cover them?

I doubt 3BP (regardless if its intended or not) will become a Netflix flagship. It has a lot of competition. From Arcane to it's Live-Adaptation Anime's, from Squid Games to Wednesday. It seems like they may not be as successful this time just because of how crowded the Netflix pool has gotten. Great Video!👍

I don't know. On one hand, they have in some ways captured the same momentum as GoT. When they started making GoT the hardcore fans of GoT started hyping the show up long before it released. And GoT was ultra popular among fantasy readers. The TBP is probably the biggest sci fi book in the past decade or so. Every booktuber talks about it.
It's in my opinion very overrated. But it's relatively new and very popular, if they pull of a good show this will be super popular I believe. But the problem as I've said, the book isn't that good. It has great sci fi concepts and ideas. But the plot and the characters are garbage. And without a good plot and characters they will have a hard time having casual people connect with the show.

This show has a 20/30% chance for success.. The reason I give it any chance at all is simple
    1. The books series has already been written and so they won't run out of books. The first 4 seasons of GoT were well adapted. But.. it's clear that they aren't doing a very faithful adaption from the trailer
    2. This book has an immense audience right now. And if there was ever a time to make an adaptation for three body problem it's right now. It's probably the most talked about and most popular sci fi book in the past decade. The book's fans will hype the show up before it comes out and spread the world just like with GoT.
The question is, will the show be good enough to keep the attention of viewers? Here is why I think it likely won't
    1. They don't seem to failthfully adapt the story
    2. DEI / ESG is a thing now unlike in GoT. They've already switched Miao to a latin american female
    3. Can't trust D&D to screw over the show like they did with GoT.
    4. The books are heavily over hyped. There are very good sci fi concepts in there. But as books? As stories? They are horribly bad. They have the blandest, most 2 dimensional characters ever. Half the book is just explenation of physics, tech and often psuedo tech / science. Like folding photon's into other dimensions, making it a 2 dimensional flat sheet, cover and etch a super computer into it etc etc Still, let me make clear. The sci fi speculation in the book is incredible. The author has come up with some really influential theories like the dark forest theory. But the author is also a pos that in great detail talks about the horrific cultural revolution in China, while supporting the genocide of the Uyghurs.

@@thedragondemands5186 They rushed the novels they had into 4 seasons when they could have easily made 8 seasons on those books alone. They cut half the content of the books but by the start of season 4 they were done with the books, they had done all the major arcs they wanted to do and started just making up their own continuation to the story.
They did ran out of books. But mostly also because of their own fault and choice.
That's also why the show went to sh after s4. Every season after that was worse than the one before. And people were in denial for the longest time. Bcause unfortunately many people can't criticize the thing they love or worse won't even allow others to do so. It took for the end of season 8 for people to wake up and smell the roses. Then suddenly the same people who claimed the battle of the bastards was the best battle on TV ever (it was horrifically bad, I can write a book on how bad and nonsensical every scene in that battle was) were now suddenly complaining about how bad the past few seaons had been. The same peope who used to call people sexist etc because "if they don't like the way D&D are changing characters like Jon, Tyrion, Danny etc that must because you hate women!"
Anyway, I don't know if it was luck that everything just came together in the right way. But the first four seasons, which were pretty faithful adaptiations of the book, only leaving a ton of stuff out "because it's TV" (which is always often a bad excuse), anyway the first four season were brilliant. And then it just went to sht. And it became obvious that D&D had no idea what they were doing, were extremely sub par writers but most of all didn't understand or "know"the characters that they were supposed to write lines for. So you got gangsta danny who, effeminate Jon "muh qween" Snowgerian, Lord Spidey "it's ok, we'll try to poison her agan, later" Varys etc. etc.
Also, I don't think that GRRM is blameless in this. He was very obviously frustrated with D&D. And it looks like they kinda shut him out after s4 or 5. But One way he could have played a bigger role in the show is by writing / finishing winds of fkn winter. He's a brilliant writer but backstabbed the fk out of his fans. He took the money and ran to play popi hopey in Hollywood. Now he's too busy creating 3 other shows or so, to care about ever finishing his book. He's long given up on that. He wrote it with no outline and it grew so big he barely remembers 10% of it. And writing for hollywood / tv is his real passion from all the interviews that I've seen from him.
I really wanted to buy those beautiful folio society editions of ASOIAF. But I'm 10000% certain that he will never finish the books. So what would be the point of buying pretty, expensive collectors editions for a seriest hat will never finish. Or at least never be finished by the O.g. author. And unlike Robert Jordan. I don't think anyone can replace GRRM's writing that easily esp not someone like Brandon Sanderson.
