    A suggestion would be to attach the wiring to the side of the boards in the attic. This will prevent them being stepped on or something placed on them.

    • @jbsdiytv
      @jbsdiytv  Рік тому +2

      Yes sir that is a good suggestion. I wanted to mount it overhead but the distance I went with the adapter and controller came up short and tight so this was my last resort. I didn’t want to redo the setup or add a receptacle but I may have to if I need someone to service up there for a utility. Thank you for your suggestion

    At 6:18, you mention if you decide not to splice. Do you mean you run another power adapter/interface on this run? If you do that, do the multiple controllers not work together as one? I have 400' to run, I will need to use at least 3 of these.

    • @jbsdiytv
      @jbsdiytv  Рік тому

      Hi and thanks for your comment. I mentioned I was new to the product and did not want to splice the the connections so I made a hole big enough to pass through it. It’s always best to only use on controller for installs because the Bluetooth and WiFi are excellent. Yes you can group multiple devices and they will sync together. I just had enough knowledge to do one device and get everything spliced mainly at the jumps

    What did you to to ensure that a light was at the top of each gable..and still have the lights evenly spaced?

    • @jbsdiytv
      @jbsdiytv  Рік тому +4

      Thank you for watching and for your comment. The back of each light has a VHB 3M pad so I peel the sticker off and place it directly centered of the peek. Of course only the edges will stick so do not move on to the next one until that one is done. You have to place the slack of the rest of your lights on your ladder so it doesn’t pull down while you work on it. Then place two clips tight, one on each side of the light to keep it there. To answer your question about them being evenly space is-good planning. Take a strand up there to the soffit and do a dry run of how they will look, don’t peel off anything. If 6 fit to the right from center to end, of course six will not fit to the left since you took up the center already so 5 will go to the left. From the first light go center to center of the light 17”. One full strand has 12 lights total. Hope this clarifies it up a bit. Thanks

    Great video man, Thanks! Quick question. I need to cut & splice in wires to create a 15' gap between 2 lights in the middle of a string. I'm concerned this will be too much of a gap and power will drop on the other side. Do you think this will be an issue?
    And if so, since the 12' Govee extension has a "driver or booster" on it, what are your thoughts on splicing an extra 3' of wire into the extension, and then splicing that modified extension into the middle of a string of lights? Thanks again

    • @jbsdiytv
      @jbsdiytv  Рік тому +1

      Yes I’ve done add 3ft to a 12ft extension using 18/3 wire. We did this while making 3-4 custom jumps that were 2-3ft within the install. This was the 1st generation lights. Now with the pros, you can do a little more with them when it comes to jumps.

      @@jbsdiytv right on. I need to jump from the 1st story of my house up to the 2nd story to continue my run, and where I need to make that jump is in the middle of a string of lights. Do you think I can cut this string in half and splice the 15' extension into the middle? Cheers

    • @jbsdiytv
      @jbsdiytv  Рік тому +1

      @D.Demers745 yes using the factory connection to connect at least the side of the 12ft extension that has that small box on it. It will be hard to splice near that but do leave that on the extension

      @@jbsdiytv So if I were to cut 5 lights off the end of a string, and then cut the connector off that piece & splice it onto the end of my newly shortened string on the house, it should give me a factory fitting to connect the side of the extension with the box on it.
      Do you think if I were to splice the remaining 5 lights onto the other side of my extension between the extra 3' of wire I added and the factory connection, I'd be able to connect the rest of the strings to it and everything would function? And would I still be able to control those lights with the app? Thanks again for your time dude!

We have installed the 100ft kit most like this…3 strands, 3ft custom jump, 2 strands, 12ft Govee extension, 2 strands, 12ft Govee extension, 2strands

      Hi there. Thanks for your comment. Yes, we prefer what is recommended by Govee(2-4 inches). We had someone request to hide it completely behind the fascia and that was 12” out. They didn’t like how it looked because it didn’t match how the box looks. This was explained before the install but they wanted to hide the white wiring. If you have them out that far, then you won’t get the wall washing triangle effect. That’s the selling point. Hope this helps

I ran about 20' from the room dormer back down to the A pex at it's lowest point using the wire you recommended from Amazon (thank you!) the I connected the strand I had cut from the end of the dormer to the wire you recommended. I tested this before I put it up on the A pex and they worked. I put them up and now the only one that works is the one right after the connection I made and the rest, that and two strands which total 150' of lights will NOT light up. I spoke to Govee and they think they could be defective as we went through a full reset. Have you ever encountered this and did you get it to work without sending them back to Govee to be replaced. They are already attached to the side molding on the house and I don't want to have to take them down and then reinstall these strands if possible as it's in an awkward area for the ladder to go up 16' to begin with. • @jbsdiytv
      @jbsdiytv  Рік тому +2

      Hi Tim that is a good question, yes sir that’s correct only for when you are ending with lights not in between as your installing. So if you know you’ll end with 3 lights then you will have to adjust some lights to get the 4th one in at the end. If you cut your strand during install and there are 3 or 7 lights, you’ll be ok as long as you bring them back together with your jump. Best way to check this theory is to go to segments in the app and you’ll see which 4 are controlled. Don’t end with odd numbers. Hope this answers your question.

    • @jbsdiytv
      @jbsdiytv  Рік тому +3

      Thank you for your comment. These are puck lighting and not strip. So don’t know if the app will control strip if you have programmed this model number to the puck. Just wanted to point that out before I explain. There are a few ways to do this so I’ll explain and let you test it out so you get the hang of it. First, go to the app and make sure your in the color button out of the four. You can pick the effects with the speed, background color and individually customizing each light to color and shutting them off or on. Once your done, save that as a snapshot by hitting the small green camera and name it. You can alway go back and set that when opening the app. Another way is in the DIY scenes. Once your there, go to the top right corner and hit the plus symbol. Name your DIY, start messing with the effects. In effects, there is a drop down arrow and you can pick fade, jumping, twinkle and so on. Once you like what you have created, apply and save it. You can create multiple diy’s and also share those with other users. There is a share symbol at the top right but first it will ask you if you would like to be a Savvy User. Hope this helps. I have a video coming out to go in depth with the app. Stay tune

      Hi there and thank you for your question. I have commented on this on my other platforms so I will address it here. When it comes to having 2x4’s as truss for soffit, I have seen on a Govee group post that someone used a 1/2”x2” wood stripped where they placed it 2-4” off the wall, then painted it. If you don’t want to weave in and out of those boards, then do this for a clean install and you could possibly save yourself having to buy more lights cause you burned most of your line to make those roller coaster jumps. I’m aware of the clips being unavailable. I’m an affiliate for Amazon and I don’t recommend any others. AliExpress has some for less. We purchase from there as well. The Govee wire is 22 gauge. For resistance factors on longer jumps, use 16-18gauge/3 wire

    If I purchase the 150ft kit, can I make custom jumps (probably under 10 ft in total) or will that effect the lights?

      No. Govee outdoor permanent lights has been out a few years so it’s new to homeowners and contractors so there aren’t many. I will eventually travel around TX but I’m noticing that many do not want to pay a travel fee. We will see in the near future if that changes. If I’m in DFW, I will notify you. Thanks for watching

    I tied my Alexa Blink motion sensor to the Govee, it will activate upon detection ( HUGE SECURITY IDEA)

    Just a heads up to anyone thinking of wiring these lights in their attic - do not drill though your roof trusses! Find another way to route the cable. The holes shown in the video are right though a roof truss and to properly fix you'd need the manufacture and possibly an engineer involved.

      Im a full time mechanical engineer/designer and I did consult with a structural engineer about the 1/2” hole I drilled in that area. Mentioned 3/4” but it’s actually 1/2”. He said the size of hole made in that area is not significant enough to impact the structural integrity of the home. But yes I do agree your point, others watching this will not know that so I do strongly suggest a better solution of routing. On all installs, we have avoided doing anything of this method to try and install through a truss. We route through the soffits. This home is purchased and I don’t ever plan to leave. Thank you for your comment which brings awareness and a valid point👍

      This is one of the most absurd comments I've ever read on YT. You could've cut that part of the truss right down the middle and it would've been fine. If drilling a hole even 3 times as big as the one he drilled compromises the structural integrity of your house then you need to talk to the guy who built it

      I'm a general contractor. Generally in structural wood you can make a hole up to 1/3 of the overall width of the wood directly in the middle without compromising integrity *so long* as it's not near either end. The only thing the wood in the middle does is keep the outsides in place; the outsides do all the work, and a single hole will not stop that from happening. Hence why truss bridges have mostly air in the middle, the beams are on the outside and crisscrossed between to keep the outsides in place.
      I drill through trusses, joists, walls, etc all day long.
      Now notching, drilling holes near an edge, that is *VERY* bad unless specifically approved by an engineer.

    It would be best to leave the electrical work to a qualified electrician. Poor installation and planning will reduce the product's lifespan.

      I don't think you know what "exposed wires" means.
      "A hazard that exists when any wire and electrical conductor is easily accessible or visible and not concealed by conduit, jacketing, sheathing, or an approved electrical enclosure." - www.hud.gov
      These lights have weatherproof sheathing and the connections have waterproof enclosures.
      There can be valid reasons to not get these lights, but "exposed wires" isn't one of them.
