Seriously, one of the most thorough, informative, and clear videos I have ever seen on UA-cam. Well done
Yes, I strongly agree!! Thank You
Out of 100 videos there are only 1-5 videos which provides the highest value to the people, one of them is yours!!!
Thank you decider of videos
Awesome, straight forward, easy to understand and great video with transitions without time consumption.
This might be the greatest UA-cam video in the history of the internet
out here doing the lords work
Amen
As someone who is terrified to touch anything electronic to modify, your video gives this absolute beginner enough confidence to pull this off successfully. Your details leave no question and I couldn’t have done it without you. Much appreciated to your extreme attention to every step.
Govee needs to cut you a check. This was a fantastic video, produced at an exceptional level. Thank You.
Man I've never been so excited to get thru the day. This guy's out here proving that the Internet was worth it.
It looks like the Govee extension cable has an F-amp in it. Basically a signal booster/cleaner. I wonder if it would have worked if you put the Govee extender in the middle or end of the two off brand ones instead of at the beginning.
Wanted to say thank you. Following your lead I was able to splice and customize my Govee lights.
Are they still working fine?
just a few tips from a tech who uses butt connectors on the reg.
- The butt connectors that are pre-shrink tube wrapped are kinda garbage. Its easy to pierce the heat shrink when crimping thus breaking the seal. Use bare butt connectors and good black heat shrink with resin. Some heat shrink doesnt have an inner resin coating so make sure yours does.
- You can also stagger the connections for a cleaner, leaner look.
- If you dont have a crimper or dont want to buy bare as well as heat shrink, they make a low temp solder butt connector. Its a heat shrink tube with low temp solder inside and ya slip it over and heat it up and thats it.
Maaaannnn... this video came RIGHT on time!
I bought the 150ft kit a month ago and have been putting off install for a couple reasons including this one about splicing and using 3rd party extensions!!
Guess I know what im doing this weekend!! Thank you!!!
Have they been working okay after splice?
I hope the install was successful, how are they operating 11 Mos later as I will be doing this project soon
I hope the install was successful, how are they operating 11 Mos later as I will be doing this project soon
This is by far the BEST video for these lights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just ordered mine yesterday during prime day. This is THE MOST thorough example on splicing that I have seen.can’t wait to get mine up.
Thank you very much for this and your other informative videos on the Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights. Because of your videos, I was confident going into my installation that required some significant modifications due to our home's unique layout. I ended up making a Y-connector from spare end connectors (cut off the end of one shortened run and one unused section) to split power because our power outlet is in the middle of the run, and also cut and spliced another run to go around a chimney. All butt-crimped and heat shrinked, and all tested out successfully today! :)
Did the homemade Y connect disrupt the sequence of lights or did they stay in uniform.?
@@masterofnone7846 No change to the sequence of lights. They're also still working perfectly 1 year after doing this customization.
LONG EXTENSION SOLUTION. Just for those trying to make an extension longer than what it comes in the box. I was able to do a 26ft extension with a regular 22 gauge 3 wire cable . All you need to do is add the 4 foot GOVEE extension to the end of whatever extension you are trying to make. This got rid of the flickering some people were experiencing. Now I have 100ft lights with a 26ft extension between light strings 3 and 4.
Is the 4ft govee extension at the end for the signal boost?
Exactly, I had the same issue and needed 27 feet. The little boxes on each Govee extension cable are F-Amps - have one on each side of the extension cable and that got rid of all strobing.
Thanks for the F-Amp info!
I used a 40’ extension with 16 gauge wire between the controller and the first strand of lights (from garage to roof). The first strand worked fine but 2nd flickered at 100% brightness. I was going to go out through attic (a huge pain) but I’m hopeful just patching in an F-Amp will do the trick. It will save me a lot of hassle.
@@madrum use two factory Govee 4’ jumpers and whatever you need in between. The little 4’ jumpers each have one amp on them. That’s what I did, worked fine.
@ that should work! I wasn’t going to need the 4’ jumpers anyways.
This is the best example video of these Govee lights. You answered every question i had and the ones I could have had.
Bro! I was confused because I have a lot of spaces where I have to cut and Govee does not provide enough accessories to feel comfortable with the installation, now I feel more confident, thanks for this video.
Finally a video that breaks down how to do this. Makes me feel a lot better about it.
Thanks to your video, I was able to add about 14 ft to the extension cord with 16 gauge white wire and the shrink wrap connector method. With a 100ft set, I get no flickering or power loss on the final strands of lights
16 gauge or 18 gauge?
@@jeremymorgan996 I used 16 gauge since I couldn't find any 18 at my hardware store that looked suitable. I would agree that the Govee's are 18 though. the 16 gauge extension didn't have any problem
How long is the govee extension cable?
I guess I need some help here. I bought the 100ft and in the 4th segment I had to put an extension of 5ft, everything worked fine. In the 5th segment after the 4th light I need to do another extension of 11ft. Did exactly the same process and no way to get it working, tried to go for 9ft extension and still no success. What am I missing? Thanks!
@Giygus how are they working almost a year later?
Govee needs to cut you a check. I only bought them once I saw your video and that they were customizable. Great work
Excellent video, I'm getting ready to put up my lights and this is exactly the info I needed to figure out the transitions along my roof. Thank you!
Amazing video, thanks for this! Can you share another 3rd party extension connectors? The one you have linked says none available. Thanks!!!
Same here :)
Good god. This is thorough with the perfect level of content. 👍🏽👍🏽
This videos makes me feel much comfortable buying this kit because I know I will need to cut and splice in a lot of areas around my house! Thank you for the video!
Excellent job, Chris and timely for me too! So grateful! Blessings from a fan in Tennessee!
Amazing video. I was super curious on how you’d install where there’s major breaks between roofs. This is perfect and well done.
This is exactly what I need to see! NOW the question is, can you split them into 2 branches? That would help my setup tremendously!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! I just tried doing some splitting and things worked great! ua-cam.com/video/cG0xsnRm-As/v-deo.html
and this video sums up what I knew was possible but didn't want to spend the money and it not working. Thank you.
Excellent video! I am just in the process of installing my lights and was going to run a similar experiment myself. But you just did it for me. Thank you very much.
I’ve sent them so many comments and messages about selling the extensions. No dice. Thanks for the video
I was hesitant on buying these as I could not tell how to jump a roof line. However, I now feel comfortable with buying / cutting this product up. Did you ever try doing a T-Cut / splice?
This is an awesome video! Thank you for taking the time to make it and explaining everything throughly! Now I’m ready to tackle this project for myself!
Chris, can you post me the link to the extension cords please?
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I have successfully cut and crimped my way to a full Govee install! Net up, WLED!
Hey. Did u use the butt connectors and heat gun. And how far of extensions did you use
Awesome!!!! Glad it all worked out!!
Hey Chris, I did this with the 18 gauge wire and my lights after the cut are only a bright white led and I can’t change them? Any reason for that??
@alexhall1732 new to govee myself but when I reversed the power wires on my ws2811 pixel LEDs I only got one solid color. Once I reversed the wires I had full controll of the ws2811's again. Double check your data and power wires are for sure wired correctly.
Excellent video!!! Very detailed and thorough! Keep ‘em coming
Great Info in your video, I do have 1 question, can you split one cord to connect to two cords going into separate directions?
lmk if it works for you. I may need to do this.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! I just tried doing some splitting and things worked great! ua-cam.com/video/cG0xsnRm-As/v-deo.html
Interesting video. Thank you for sharing. I'd be concerned that moisture from humidity and condensation would eventually penetrate the white box where the cables enter and eventually cause a problem. It would be better if you used a waterproof coupler, either directly attached to the box or just on the cables themselves, to ensure a secure, water tight environment to protect the wiring.
I would look at the Wago Gelbox
Incredibly thorough
I now feel confident
Thank you so much , this video is just what I was looking for.
This is one of the best videos I have ever watched! I was desperate about the cables and planning, so you helped a lot!!
Now I know …. How they did it thank you so much 👍
Thank you! The eaves on my house were driving my nuts on how I’m going to install the lights! So pretty much any 18-20 gauge silicone wire should do the trick ? I’m needing to at least add 8 foot on one eave and another 12ft on another. Thanks glad I found your video.
this is great b/c ive been looking to buy these but wanted to know how to extend the wires. perfect, thanks
Great video!! I was wondering if you can splice into them creating a branch
Great information. Can you provide info on the off brand extensions you use in the video? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the video. I have a question. If one of my connectors doesn't work. Can i just put two pieces together just cutting and doing the same as you did?
Great video, I really wish I saw this before I installed mine. What about removing sections of a strip? Would that still work?
Are these the pro lights or non pro. The Govee sight says only the pro sets can be cut, so i just wanted to check before ordering any. And i agree with others- best video out there on these lights, so thanks!
@@amy4484 thanks!! These are the original lights. Not the pro.
Question- why use the 18G wire versus keeping consistent with 20G? Thanks for posting this @chrismaherdiy
Just what i was looking for. Im thinking about using the WAGO clips since I don't own a heat gun and it appears to be the east method for splicing and extending sections.
Your video is easy to follow. Looking to do some splices. But wanted to see if you knew if using the connectors between each strand was required of if I could cut them off and splice together. I have a connection that ends at the perfect location and needs about a two feet splice but don’t want to put lights between.
What about a Y splice. Do you think that would work? Thanks
Chris thank you so much for this video… my quick questions is .. Can I cut the extra length light at the end of on roof? And how to water proof that end cut?
You are very welcome! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! I actually just made a video on this! Hope it helps! ua-cam.com/video/eG4sKOmZW9k/v-deo.html As far as waterproofing, I would probably just put some hot glue on the cut end.
Chris. Thanks for your videos they are awesome. I purchased a 100 ft kit. (Not Pro).
I could use your help. I need a detailed video on how to turn off a few lights that have in various places that don't add anything to the show.
Good video.unfortunately 3rd party extension not available and Govee will not sell separately.
man tho your video and explanation are good but your voice is much better it has soothing sound! 😁😁
Can you tell me where to get the extension cable? Can't seem to find it. Govee doesn't have it.
Great video - I watched it a few times but decided to try and keep my lights intact instead. I am at a bit of a loss, maybe someone can help. I found a cable that fits into the sockets with only a minor adjustment (cutting off the threads). I have the lights broken into 3 sections with 2 strings in each and they can easily be reached with the single provided extension - I just only have 1. I tested all the lights together first before I out any of them up. I had the first 2 groups working with the supplied extension between them. Then I tested this one that I bought - it worked!. So now I have the first 2 groups (4 light strands in total) with a 3rd party extension between them. I went to add the govee extension to connect the last set of lights... and they dont work. I am not sure what I missed. So I have 2 strings of lights, 3rd party extension (maybe 9ft max), 2 sets of lights, govee extension, 2 sets of lights. The last set will not turn on. Anyone have guesses?
Great Video, if you had to many lights at the end of a length can you easily trim these off.
For example 1 or 2 lights extra at the end of a run length.
Obviously terminating them
Correctly?
Hey Cris great video. I'll feel way more confident doing my install tomorrow. 👍
Awesome video. Thanks! I’ve looked through the comments but haven’t found an answer - which 3rd party extender did you use?
Do you know if you can make a Y connection or does there have to be a continous feed from beginning to end?
Just did my house last week it turned out great! Another great video man.
I appreciate your video. It explained everything I needed with the links. One question, what size heat shrink tube did you use? I don't need a whole kit as I won't use it so I'm looking to buy a short roll.
Hi Chris thanks for awesome videos, can you make one video showing if we can add/splice/connect a govee outdoor strip to these lights. I have an area on my roof doesn’t have soffit to attach these and only the strip can fit there…
Since you are a genius I feel you will be able to come up with a solution for people like me
Thanks in advance
This video was extremely helpful after some animal bit through my outdoor ground lights. Thank you!
Great Video. What size white box did you use to securely fit 3 WAGO clips instead of the box? The link that you provided takes me to the Amazon page which has several size options. I think I'm going to use this method and just seal the holes with silicone or hot glue like you noted.
Hey chris excellent video i have a situation was wondering if i could add 3 lights to a 12 foot extension
I can make the extension shorter i just need to get 3 more lights on an overhang
Great video! Quick question, can you omit lights when splicing or do they always have to continue in sequence?
Thanks for the detail and info. Made me comfortable to try with my lights and install🎉
I was looking for this video for a long time. Thank you so much.
This is beautiful. Does the whole line still work with the app??
Great video thanks for posting! will splicing work with every model number of Govee lighting? I've watched a video stating that only one particular stock number you can actually cut and splice together.
I've been watching a ton of UA-cam videos on which LEDs to buy for this Christmas (2023). I fucked up my cheap lights last year when "Ripping" them off the house! They are over 5 years old and I've always wanted to do the LEDS. Only my two story house has a lot of dif. sections needing extensions. As of right now, I think Govee only allows "Cuts" Thank you... I will click the link if you have an affiliate link for the lights if I choose them!
Hi great job🎉
Is the 3rd party extension cable IP67 and/or do you have a link to the one you used in this setup? TY
Glad yours work. Cut mine and no go. About 8-10 feet of wire and 75 feet of lights.
Did you eliminate lights? I don't believe you can do that.
What about increasing the wire gauge size of the extension wire?
How did you get your issue resolved... I'm standing on my roof as I'm writing this message .. my last strand of lights won't turn on ... 192 ft of govee lights with 3 splices
Great video! Do you know how many light kits you can connect to 1 power supply?
Excellent video. Chris
Can you tell me what 3rd party has the connectors ?
Also will this work with Govee gen 2 ?
BTW, if you just cut the 3-wire ribbon at a slight angle, you won't need to bother with the wago connectors for testing. This would also allow the butt connectors to be slightly offset from one another, making it slightly less bulky if you heat shrink the whole bundle.
Thanks. This is exactly what I was wondering if I could do to these lights.
Really informative video. Thanks Chris. So what is the maximum jump I can get? Can I get skip a 30-35ft section?
Hey Chris, great video. So, i've been waiting for these 3 pin ASAHOM 6ft Extension Cords to become available, but they've been out of stock for a while. The decription says by today they'll be back in stock...in case they're still delayed longer, do you recommend another 3 pin extender cord?
Great video thanks. I bought the 150 foot strand. It comes with 3 long ext cords and 2 short cords.
Do you know if there will be flickering if I connect a long cord to a short cord??
I only need one more extension cable so not sure I need to splice. Do you have another recommendation? The link for 3rd party extension connectors are sold out.
Great video. What would they look like if installed closer to wall then 2"? I have some side areas where there is no overhang.
Nice video. What size heat shrink tubing did you use on the three butt joints?
Curious why Govee insists the 1st and 2nd gen permanent lights aren’t cuttable. I’ve now seen it done many times, many ways. My guess is they just want to sell more of the pro series, which really won’t work for my particular installation. This is a great video. Thanks.
Is there a way to use a splitter with these lights? I have an outlet built into the middle of my home that I want to use for my power source. Unfortunately this would require splitting the line in two in order for it to send power in each direction. Con this work and what do I use to make the split and connections.
Great video. Just what i needed to know to gap from porch to eaves. Question. Do you think a 3 pin splitter would also work in these ? My Porch doesn’t go the whole way across the front of my house. Split level ranch. Thanks
First off excellent job with the wiring... but I have a quick question are there limitations of cutting off lights that you don't need, for instance if each string has 12 lights but you only need eight, can I cut off the last four and leave them off?
Very good video Sr.!
I have a situation, I need to extend one segment between 2 lights to 12 feet more, How far do you think I could go?
You're supposed to use a small brick extender after 5th string I believe to help prevent that flickering
Great video I just installed mine but I need another extension cable. Do you possibly have a link of where you got yours from?
awesome video! this may be a dumb question but I keep hearing different answers on this. Would I be able to connect lets say 300-400 feet of govee lights together with extensions like you did on 1-2 outlets? or would I need to connect each 100 ft segment to an outlet for a total of 3-4 outlets?
Great tutorial. I have to Make a splice as well. Buy slightly different. I need to take a 16 foot section and make it 5 feet. I think it should work, just wondering if the govee system would notice the number of lights in the line.
lmk if it works
@jorgesalinas9429 confirmed that it works. Last link is about half its original length. Works great.
@@kingbingy did you just solder the end?
@jorgesalinas9429 great question. No, I de-sodered the end. Meaning, I opened the light and scraped away the glue and heated up the soder and removed cable. So it's clean at the end.
@@kingbingy hmm I need a video on that as it sounds pretty interesting!
Great video. How would you cap the cut wire? Thank you.
Epoxy. Mix up some DP100NS and dip the cut end in and let it set up for 5 to 10 mins.
Could the same be done with the string govee lights? I have extra lights causing them to overlap. I want to cut at the end of my light set, to make everything fit nicely.
Third party extension cord is no longer available I searched everywhere for something and I can’t find anything.
Thank you! 👏🏼 by chance, did you try to splice two strands off one? Kinda like a Y.
Thanks for watching and I certainly did :) ua-cam.com/video/cG0xsnRm-As/v-deo.html
Thank you! Just saw the video searching through all your others. Good stuff man.
