I found when sipping this, I had to let it open up. The first pour was kinda like what you described but then on the 2nd and 3rd I loved it. Came back a few days later and the first pour was nice.
I can't speak for the Small Batch Select, but I absolutely loved the Single Barrel.

Lucky charms! Proud moment when I heard that because I thought the same thing on the neck pour and that was a first for me... I genuinely liked the first glass and thought it evolved two or three times ending up with a sweet vanilla cake batter; however, I’ve gone back few times since and haven’t experienced any of that. Now I just get a ton of rye spice, not much else.
Opened up my bottle new years day and it is cause for pause and a bit disconcerting. It has my interest for sure.
Nose and palette changes more than any whiskey I’ve had. I love it though.

the bottle is shaped like an upside down rosebud, loved the distillery tour, i prefer the standard small batch and single barrel for their quintessential bourbon profiles.
Matt, this one has to open up like most of the Four Roses offerings. I’m not a fan of the Single Barrel however, the select I really enjoy. This review puts me in the mind of how I felt when I tried 1792 small batch. Although a different flavor profile, the neck pure of the 1792 small batch I absolutely did not like. It set on the self for about 3 months until I had company over for a game of cornhole. I said to one of the guys “hey let’s hit this baby and when you leave take it with you”. So we had a few pours and it was fan freakin tastic. Too bad I had to part ways with it that evening but the next day off to the liquor store I went. So now when I get a bottle 1792 I open it right away to air. I think that’s what you have to do with this Four Roses.
I LOVE 1792. Buy it now before they double the price. Best under $30 bourbon I've tried. (Other than Wild Turkey 101)
That 1st cork pop was solid. Awesome good time. Excellent nosing and tasting notes. That last bit of advice had me rolling.

I was gifted this bottle a little over a year ago and have yet to open it.
I too wanted to love the Four Roses small batch select. To me it's more of an occasion whisky for when you are pairing food or a cigar that needs something delicate and light. It's a very polite bourbon that takes a bit of getting use to. After we have all had our barrel proofs, this expression took time for me to warm up to it. It has it's place and now I am happy to keep a bottle. One of the most delicate whisky's i've tasted. Almost reminds me of nice highlands Scottish whiskey like Glengoyne. Keep up the great work buddy.

Four Roses Small Batch was my first decent bourbon buy. It wasn’t my favorite but it was the gateway bourbon for me.
It’s like chewing on oak branch that was used to toast giant Lucky Charms and Christmas spiced mints from the ‘60’s. It didn’t do me proper either. They may want to try another recipe. Glad I just bought the expensive sample. Nose was candy, mouth was medium, it was complex but in more of a muddled way. Nice bottle, pretty color, and legs in the glass … but it won’t be invited back to the party. I will wait a week or two and try again, to see if it improves.
I was a fan of the Select from the first crack!

Honesty is the best policy... I've not pulled the trigger on this cause I'm like why is it so much more than the single barrel....why.....I like the single barrel but I'm not in love with it, and now seeing your review of the sbsl.... it's like....glad I didn't pull the trigger. Big ups to you Matt

I actually like this bottle quite a bit. I like that it veers away from the traditional Bourbon note. Anyone can do vanilla, cherry, and oak flavors, been done to death. This one I get Cocoa, spearmint, and like a weird cardamom thing. I dig it. All good though my man. Took your advice on Bardstown Discovery 3 and you were not lyin!

Yeah I didn’t really like it either, it was trying too hard, too many flavors, overwhelmingly spicy and mint, which I don’t care for in my bourbon. It was my first time and probably last time returning any liquor. May be a good mixer, but too pricey to mix

It's been 3 years and I'm curious how you feel about this now. I think this is a good bourbon. A little pricey but it usually does well in blinds for me.
I have to agree with you. The taste is off for some reason. It kinda has a pow to that never goes away. I'd much rather enjoy a bottle of Elijah Craig for the price. Smoother and easier on the palette

Did you ever try it again? I really like this one. Maybe add a touch of water to bring out the flavors. The taste is more rye-forward than the nose would indicate, but it lingers, and shows sweetness if you give it a chance. I am surprised you found it so dry. Thanks for all the reviews.
When I added some water I got more rye taste. Very spicy but with a sweeter finish. Gonna let it sit for a couple weeks and go back to RR SB. Having said that however I did really like the 4R..
After a couple days i went back to it neat and absolutely loved it. Gonna probably go through it quick😄

Mine opened up a bit below the shoulder too, it went from "wtf" to "meh" which I guess isn't a strong play, but at least it had the right idea. I'm normally a reliable Four Roses fanboy but this one didn't do it for me. I really wanted it to be good. I still do.
It's weird because some people absolutely love the stuff! Although.....some people love Evan William's Bottled in Bond too....
My bottle of Four Roses SBS opened up after the shoulder of the bottle. I was not a fan my first 2 drams but went back to it about once a week, and it got really delicious around week 3 or 4.

My experience too. Unimpressed when first opened, better after a few weeks, and really nice a few months later in the bottom third of the bottle.

It's better than the Single Barrel by a small margin. We did a blind in my house last week - Buffalo Trace, Elija Craig Small Batch, Four Roses Single Barrel, and Four Roses Small Batch Select. On my list Four Roses SBS won but the # 2 was Four Roses Single Barrel. My wife had it flopped with her #1 the Single Barrel and SBS #2... for $20 more it's not worth that much a bump in price. You get more bourbon for the price with the Single Barrel.
Blind flights with the wifey are the best! I'll have to see what my wife thinks of this bottle. She's never had 4 roses either.
