Open and shut, Russell’s 10 for us, before even watching. We’re still gonna watch though, because Matt.
I actually find the 10 is easier than single barrel; I would have thought the higher proof would have done it for me but nope
Especially, when Russell's 10 is on sell for $22.
I’ve never ever found it for 22 $ a bottle! If I did my cart would be full
@@scottallen7195 yeah i think is in the 20s here in FL
@@scottallen7195 usually $27, was $22 this week. Green Bay area.
In a "world" of so much seriousness you find a way to make everyone relax and laugh a bit while spitting truth and dropping knowledge bombs. Keep up the good work Matt.
How to tell if it’s a genuine Matt Porter whiskey review video:
1: self deprecating fat jokes
2: Absurd tasting notes (Cherry pie filling in a tin can)
3: mentions he is the worlds top whiskey taster
Watuh Watuh! Watuh Watuh!
Plus I identify with sweating brushing my teeth.
Cracks me up every time I watch this son of a gun.
He picked the age and the proof...worlds greatest whiskey taster.👍😉
"I havent sweated that hard since I brushed my teeth this morning." 🤣 ILY Matt
I love Russell's 10 year, one of my favorites.. better than eagle rare imo.
Don't sleep on Turkey. People talk up BT like it's perfect. It's bourbon. Down the middle, classic bourbon. Russell's and even WT 101 are killer, offer complexity and remain cheap and on the shelf. It's nuts. I had Russell's 13 last Saturday and I mean it when I say it may be the best bourbon I've ever had.
Finally tried Russell's Reserve and I agree. Surpisingly good. Also don't pass up Wild Turkey Rare Breed that's my favorite so far.
Also my favourite
Rare Breed is by far delicious! Favorite here too!
Rare Breed is my favorite as well. I didn't find Russell better than eagle rare though. Both great burbons.
RR10 all the way! My palate finds Eagle Rare astringent and off tasting. Agree with Matt's Eagle Rare assessment of "Tin can and cherry"
ER one of my favorite drinkers however RR for the win hands down more complex & mouth coating! Sollllid review
Russels is probably the better whiskey imo. More oily and complicated. eagle rare is good, but appeals more to the taters that want something simple and without a finish. Youd be amazed how many people specifically say that they only want buffalo trace or eagle rare because they dont have an "aftertaste". A finish is supposed to be there. Ill never understand it, but i guess im not that market.
I think Eagle Rare shines with the store picks. For me, single barrel Russell's aren't different enough to justify the price. Also, ER is not hard to find for me, so it's more like a cheap daily than a tater bottle and I think it's a good cheap daily.
@@lonewanderer3603 its very hard to find in some places
Finding ER in San Diego for $35. It’s a great daily drinker but right now the $19 1L bottle of Kirklands Small Batch 1792 is a no brainer. Headed back to buy 2 more tomorrow.
@@lonewanderer3603 agree the store picks are fire i have 4 different ones all with a extra back up and always reach for it as a great daily sipper you dont have to think about
I really enjoy both, ER is my daily drinker. I find that people think because it may be hard for them to find ER that it should be some "great" bourbon experience. ER is a great $30 Tuesday night pour. Its not a fancy, complex, special occasion bourbon . I think expectations are way too high due to the presumption of limited availability. Buffalo Trace Distillery has a business plan that thrives on this presumption. Weller 12 never wins in blinds, but people think its the Holy Grail. BTW the entire WT line is fantastic and easy to find in most places. Rare breed, 101, Russells 10 are all fantastic, easy to find and priced right.
You are one of the funniest youtubers I've ever watched. Russel's is the better deal for sure, especially since everybody is charging $70 for the Eagle in Florida. Great review!!
Dude you hands-down have the most fun whiskey tube videos to watch. Had me cracking up after a shit day at work 🤟
Matt, the terrifying wheel of almost spillingness can go on a table and spin without terror. Just an FYI. But I like your way better so ya know.
My setup is terrible right now and I'm on a stool lol
Classic battle. Thanks for doing it.
BT should really put Eagle Rare out at 100 or 101 proof
Agreed
The first time I had the Russell’s 10 year I was drinking bourbon on ice…I’m going to get another bottle and this time I want to drink it neat. Thanks for an another awesome video!
I’ll drink either, any time.
Eagle Rare is easily available nearby me as a single barrel pick for around the same price as the regular bottles. If I walked into a party and either of these was the bar bourbon I’d be happy.
And just like that one of my favorite go to and available bourbons will fly off the shelves.
I dont have that kind of influence lol
Honestly I’ve never seen your channel before. But this intro has me hooked, riveting
This was so much fun to watch. You always crack me up!! Great video buddy
LMAO! I acquired ADHD just watching this video! Many thanks, Matt, for turning the mundane into something sublime.
Time to conduct my own Schlammered, Schmussell’s Reserve vs Schmeagle Rare...Bourbon Smirmish. Thanks for the matchup.
RR10 is cheaper and much more readily available and tastier than Eagle Rear. RR has a bit of spicy kick that makes it feel a little higher and more interesting than it's 90 proof would suggest. RR10 has recently become my ~$30 range go to. RR single barrel is probably my favorite bourbon outright. If only I could find the new limited edition RR 13 year old...
I agree with everything you said 100% xiamengbaby.
Eagle Rare is decent but I agree, Russell's is better
ER is a delicious daily pour. I do prefer Russell's single barrell if given the choice.
YOU LEAVE MY MOM OUT OF THIS! Thanks for the video Matt - cheers
Not surprising. I would think the richer texture comes from lower entry proof / less dilution. Great video!
Give this man a TV show and/or 1 million subscribers.
Its nice that you are putting regular bottles on video instead of the usual hyper new allocated stuff like everybody else does all the time! Cheers bro! I a forever fan! Ps eagle rare is not that great. Dont pay over mdrp for it.
Great choice for a head-to-head with their age and SRP. For me, Turkey's signature nutty kick is almost always going to beat those sweet cherry notes in ER.
Time for a fricken showdown!! Haven't been able to find Eagle Rare in quite some time.
I saw it tonight at a local liquor store. 79 bucks. I picked up a bottle of russell's reserve for 32 and spent the extra on a bottle of michters rye. 😉
It’s everywhere here where I’m at in Va. Picked up 3 bottles and a handle over the weekend.
Eagle Rare is almost a single barrel so your results will vary but Russell 10 is a great bottle. Either way it's a good time
Eagle Rare is like a box of chocolates...
Funny. I chuckled twice and smiled twice.. That may not sound like much, but only actual funny can get me to do that. And boy did I need it...
I like both. Good stuff.
I love RR, definitely complex and sweet. I've heard Eddie say in an interview that his Father and he believe the sweet spot for their whiskies is between ten and twelve years.
Great video!! I've always said ppl like BT products because they aren't offensive, and while Id pick ER over RR slightly but only at retail, the fact that I can walk into any store and pay retail for RR is a lovely thing, I wouldnt pay over $50 for ER....have seen it as high as $90....thats 3 bottles of RR....no brainer!!
Both are excellent. Depends on the mood/time of year. Spring/summer = ER. Fall/Winter = Russell's.
Yup. The very simple RR is better than the more complex ER.
👍
I'm definitely in favor of knowing that they've put their signatures on it!
Mix it up all you want. You knew which was which right away
Russell's 10 put me into the bourbon game!
This being the Thanksgiving weekend, I've done this comparison twice already. 😅. Beautiful. Big Time !!!
Love the RR10yr it’s a modest light proofed sipper that’s delicious. Great review!! 👍
I need to get another bottle of RR10. Mine is years old and tastes like toothpicks. It lost (hands down amongst 5 of us) a blind WT lineup taste test big time.
I love Eagle Rare, and it's widely available here for £35. Russells Reserve is over twice as much and really hard to find, so I haven't had the pleasure of drinking it yet.
Love this review and hilarious as always!
RRSiB, WT101, RB will always be in my bar. I love WT products, but I have bought 2 bottles of RR10Y and gave both away because they were so bad. I have not met anyone that reaches for it consistently. I am surprised that the WTWT is making it sound like RR10Y is easily defeating ER. To each his own; everyone's palette is different. Keep up the excellent work Matt. Love Ya!!
Found this video while looking for buffalo trace vs eagle rare. This was a great comparison as well though. Qualityyy
It's always crazy to me that ER is so hard to find other places. It is EVERYWHERE out here in California. Great stuff as always Matt.
-Brian
So true. I got it at Safeway lol.
I haven't seen Eagle Rare in 6 years. Then about 2 years ago Buffalo Trace disappeared from the shelves. I don't play the tater game of trying to get on some list to overpay for cheap bourbon.
Buffalo Trace was on the shelves for $24 a bottle 2 years ago. I'm not paying $75 for it now. Eagle Rare used to be about $30 a bottle. I'm not paying $90+ for it. Eagle Rare is toilet water compared to GlenDronach Revival 15 for just a couple dollars more. But the taters gotta have it.
Out of curiosity, how much is it running for on those readily-available Cali shelves?
Dude your hilarious thanks for making my night better at work
These two bottles night and day. Can’t be bumped.
Once he said how smooth it was I knew that was the Eagle rare.
Got an OGd 114 lately for a cheapy I love it getting a RR10 soon rather have a 13 butbthats a pipe dream
Funny how I disagree with some of your takes but also agree with the majority of them. Both good pours for the $, but Russell's is definitely more complex/interesting to me. Keep up the good work brotha, and welcome to Colorado!
Oh Matt, you've officially lost your mind and I hope you never find it. Keep being you and making great videos. Cheers. And thank you for stopping from trying to find Eagle Rare, I know I can find Russell's Reserve everywhere.
I have been drinking good bourbon for a very long time and either my nose get burned out when I was younger. But for the life of me whiskey smells like whiskey. Whiskey taste like whiskey some are a lot smoother than others but it's whiskey...
So the better the whiskey, the more smooth it is? That is the difference?
The RR10 is great, but if you can get some single barrel reserve its a notch up.
Thanks Matt, now I have to go buy that bottle of Russell's 10. America!
The Russell Reserve was my Deanston Dregs spill bottle.
Russell's Reserve is a very good pou,r especially since you can usually find it in stock at most places.
A bottle of eagle rare might be able to pay my mortgage on the secondary in just a few years
such a great channel
I love Russel 10….just scored my first bottle of eagle rare…I hope to recreate this very soon
Here in Austin TX, I've only once seen a bottle of Eagle Rare, and the shop wanted something like $68 for it so I declined. I see the Russel's Reserve 10 year far more frequently, and the cost is usually around $35-40. Still haven't tried either.
Hells yes! Going for it right now! (Sweating just typing this.)
Not surprised at all. I did a blind with Eagle Rare, Russell’s Reserve 10 year, and Henry McKenna last week and I chose RR as number 1, Henry BiB number 2, and ER as number 3 even though I liked them all.
My order also
Love your videos❤
Russell’s all day over ER.. cheers!!
Eagle Rare has always been a cosistently good pour for me. I am a big Wild Turkey/Rare Breed fan but my last couple of bottle s of Russell's 10 has tasted too oaky, even a little bitter to me. Maybe i'm just a simpler man the older i get?
Yeah it flattens out watery taste 2nd bottle won’t buy it again We’ll maybe 😊
For the price old granddad BB taste better to me just does
Great now I have to hear my wife yell at me asking why I bought another bottle of whiskey! If I already have a lot...Russell's Reserve 10. Thanks Matt! 😂
"big time" in the Paul rudd terrible Jamaican voice in I love you man
I was taking a sip right when you said “Matt what do you know about being thin? “ I laughed and it burned like hell. I do not recommend watching your videos while actively drinking😂😂
I love my Russells's 10 year! Big fan big timeeeee!
Dude I love this intro
I usually agree with you, Matt. Usually...
Love me some rr 10. I use it to set my palate. Nearly every Bourbon tastes better to me after I have a nip of rr 10.
I've done this match up a couple times before and I will have to agree that the Russell's is more complex and has a lot more going on than eagle rare. I do enjoy eagle rare more in the summer time.
Love my RR SIB!!
Get it while you can.
Brilliant and funny as always!👍🇺🇸
Did a blind tasting with RR10, ER10 and Basil Hayden's 10 ... Russell's Reserve 10 for the win by 5 out of 6 at the tasting. ER for the 6th. BH10 is relative garbage.
No surprise here in my opinion that Russell's Reserve won. Eagle Rare is a cherry bomb that's way too overpowering. But not a real cherry, more like a cough syrup cherry.
This is how I feel about Old Forrester.
@@krist1212 how dare you
Hmmmmmm. Now I want eagle rare and old forrester. Lol.
We have always found eagle rare and Buffalo trace kind of flat, they are good bourbons but aren't very complex or tasty!
I never bought another buffalo trace
Russells 10 not easy to come by in the UK but I can get Eagle rare between £30-40. I rate Rare breed above it so if R10 is better I might try and get a bottle
Russells is available everywhere but ER is not. Sitting on 20 bottles on ER the we use for mixer or trade.
Damn, I need those little glencain lids for turntable spinning.....and a turntable. RR10 it is.
Hell yes. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'll take RR10 over Eagle Rare w/ the same specs all day every day and twice on Sunday. Not knocking Eagle Rare. It's fine. But RR10 is superior for me.
RR10 hands down! Not discounting the ER - as is a Fav - but if comparing to the RR10 -Russell’s is the winner. That said, let’s keep it quiet, as I can still get the RR10 readily for $40ish. 😎🤣
I loved this review, but my mom wasn't too wild about it..
Seeing that I am usually not in the mood for peanut butter or peanuts in my bourbon, I will avoid RR
"I guess it depends on whether you're a length or a girth guy."
Ok I’m gonna get some
I love the orange and black wax wrapped candies. Peanut butter kisses is another name for them. Reminds me of bit o honey.
Fun review. Now I gotta drink more whiskey to pick up better tasting notes ...sigh. :) Cheers Matt!
Okay now I need to go out and buy a bottle of Russell Reserve 10 year. The good news is it is everywhere no hunting.
Great lineup- there is no looser here in my opinion! These are my two two favorite daily sippers.
I'm laughing already at the beginning of this video. I seen you on Chad and Sarah's live feed, thought I would give you a looksy.
Do a russels reserve single barrel vs Eagle rare both store picks tho instead of the shelfer
When people come into my store and ask if we have Eagle Rare I laugh. When I leave my store I go to my local Walgreens, buy a bottle of Russell’s, and laugh while drinking my pour of wild turkey when I know some poor soul is crying that he didn’t get his Eagle today.
Curious why you don’t just buy it from your store
Don’t carry it.
