      It's actually not a Darth Vader helmet (that's more like the German helmet), but like the rebel trooper helmet from episode 4 (and at the end of Rogue One). Just as it was the case with Walt Disney who was greatly inspired by Tivoli in Copenhagen when he created Disneyland, George Lucas also found inspiration by researching and visiting Denmark (including LEGOLAND).

    a little bit to add to the Danish M1923 helmet is that it was designed for trench Warfare. to protect anything that comes from above, but yes it does look a little bit goofy compared to the other nations helmets. A lot of our military equipment at the time was from WWI, also explains why our helmets was designed that way.

      Some updates were happening at the time. like modern uniforms, the WW1 uniform was grey or blue. The planned aquisition of tanks and armored cars. Modern artillery and so on. The army suffered from lack of funding and german friendly politicians

      @@Mortenhendriksen Well, the Danish army was from what I gather the only one still based around the concept of volley fire by ww2. Their tactics and equipment was for the most part completly lacking, and like the Norwegians neither hand grenades nor mortars was in inventory, wich at that time was the main weapon of the infantry companies.

    • @Mortenhendriksen
      @Mortenhendriksen 2 роки тому +7

      @@petermagnus9919 that much isn't true. That concept died already during ww1. The danish army has training/ instruction videos that they put on youtube years ago and they use more modern small unit tactics. Plus from the war of 1864 the danish army learned that volley fire was of the past. If anything trench warfare were more likely their main tactic.
      Yeah the equipment was lacking, which was why the army was looking into getting updated, just too late.

      @@Mortenhendriksen The army suffers from underfunding to this day, with literally have frigates who don't have missiles on them, we have no attack helicopters and our troops have next to if not zero AA capability. It's been so bad a petition was made to increase funding and some officers have written letters but all of it were rejected by our left leaning government who holds a majority. Now, for the first time in 70 years, that same government have invited American troops to put up bases in our country while still refusing to spend more on our military.
      It's sad, because I hate playing this left vs right stuff and if I took a test I were actually center left but this is just history repeating itself and people have made it just that a red vs blue thing when really it shouldn't be, it's simply logical you give your armed forces the equipment they need to solve the missions you ask of them or you stop sending them on those missions because Denmark does participate overseas with other NATO members.

    What i loved while watching the movie was the orders of the NCOs and fireteam leaders. And the communication overall. Every order is given semsical, soldiers act accordingly, the NCOs issue orders with the troops survival and success in mind.
    Every order is acknowledged so the MCO knows the soldier heard his command. The orders are all precise and to the point. They all move and act so realistically and so tactically, that you wouldn't even notice the low number of casualties compared to most holiwood movies. At least not negatively. It makes a lot of sense what happens and what decisions are made and when. The ones that "don't make sense" are not ones that are downright stupid, but are justified either by misjudgement or lack of knowledge or options. Or multiple of those. Such a damn good movie

    I love 9th April! It's a shame tho you focused only on the fights tho, the other calmer parts are where the movie really excels. for me, the very best scene of the movie is after war is declared, them pedaling from the barracks to the border to intercept the germans and those night scenes ride full of angst as dawn approaches is some of the best scenes I've seen in any movie, period! looking at the movie for the first time and not knowing danish history, i legit expected them to be ambushed, which just gives an extra depth and tension to the scene.

    Great video! Note: the largest surrender in the history of the British Empire came about due to an enemy equipped with bicycles: the surrender of Singapore to the Japanese. Bicycle troops were essentially akin to paratroops at the beginning of WW2 - lightly armed but super-maneuverable. There's a book devoted to this: The Bicycle in Wartime - great book!

    4:07 It was initially built in 1902 but production continued for several decades and though production has long since stopped the gun itself is still in unofficial use with the Brazilian police. Fun fact, after the Danish surrender the German army put in an order for several machine guns with DISA (the manufacturer of the Madsen) for field tests with the German army as they were impressed with it's effectiveness vs armoured vehicles.
    6:52 yes that is indeed Euron Greyjoy
    9:48 Seems you missed this, the tank driver or cmdr noticed the sd.kfz get knocked out and the panzer is wiggling to restrict the accuracy of the machine gun to prevent another penetrating shot.

    The Danish bycycle batallion deployed was trained a wee bit better than just learning how to fix a flat tire - they were specifically rotated into the area because they were the most trained unit and replace raw recruits that hadnt been fully trained yet. They had also received longer training than the German infantry involved.

    Even today they teach squad leaders to use hand signals first, then voice and lastly radio. Hand signals work when silence is necessary, they also work when there's so much noise you cannot hear anything. The more your squad is trained, the more automatic responses you get and the more squad leader actually can think tactics and do less micromanaging. Basic combat drills (ex. when encountering enemy, spread automatically, when moving couple of guys scout etc. ) go a long way, and most armies in WW2 had those. Those basic combat drills are the ones that keep you alive.
    Bicycle infantry was heavily utilized by the Finns, with Jaeger units. Roads were so bad that wheeled vehicles and even tanks could get stuck. The Japanese did the same. Bicycle increased the payload and distance soldier could go. Finland had bicycle units up to 2000s, as regular infantry units were supposed to move with bicycles if tractors were not available.
    Considering ambush like this, I can see many problems. One can say that it shows the chaos and shock of overall situation and inexperience of the Danes. First is the overall positioning of the troops, second is the amount of time they spent while fighting.
    Firstly, they are just roadblock. The other Madsen is other side of the road, which means that they have to retreate across open road to join the rest. There are no troops that are firing at the flanks of the enemy. Pretty much you want to make L-shaped ambush in terrain like this, with forest serving as retreat route. Placing the other Madsen on the right would cancel the flanking maneuver of Germans seen in the movie.
    Secondly, they are getting prolonged firefight with mechanized enemy, without AT guns and limited ammo. The best they could anticipate is to delay and cause chaos. Giving an order that riflemen shoot one magazine in rapid succession and Madsens shoot also one mag and then retreat would had served them better. It is simple and although not causing much damage, would hinder German movement, with little casualties.

    The percentage of casualties and how even few of them impact a squad (even considering it is an inexperienced one) also as the timing of surrender really is depicted realistically, because even a loss of 1/4 of soldiers usually causes the unit destruction. And, well, that most of the time soldiers surrender when they don't see a possibility to survive an enemy encounter. Some battles in WW2 (especially on the Eastern front) may be an exception because Nazis waged war on annihilation (which is not common) but in 1940 and with Danes it was definitely not the case

    This is a great film. It shows heroic but over powered defence of Denmark. The time before that the Danes fought the Germans was 1864 ( please watch the TV series based on this war) . So the actual number of German casualties is actually still debated to this day with the highest number said to be around 203 killed and an unknown amount of wounded, while this may seem like it was just Danish propaganda it is actually based on a report from DISA (Danish Industry Syndicate) and the then Waffenamnt and is the only written document regarding losses on the German side. It should be noted the main reason for the high losses was the 20mm Madsen autocannon which was also adopted to some degree by the Germans. Furthermore some Danish soldiers found it strange the number was so low as for example one remembered his friend shooting at least 10 before he was shot, of course they could also just have been wounded unless if that was with the autocannon, it didn't say in what I found. I'm not sure how much of this information is in English, I just found it interesting.

    The problem with only using wikipedia as your source, is that you rarely get a complete picture. According to Danish and German records overall manpower and materail loss favoured the Danish, with only 11 KIA and 20 WIA, the Germans took 22 KIA and 65 WIA plus numerous AFV's and Tanks, plus a medium bomber detroyed by AAA fire.
    It was only in then initial stages of the invasion that the germans only met bicycle platoons, later Danish a motorcycle regiment with 20 AT cannons arrived to defend Sønderborg.

    • @historylegends
      @historylegends  3 роки тому +4

      No. Obviously I didn't use Wikipedia only. Perhaps you had access to other sources. In this case, Danish ones. The point I made was to show that there should not have been hundreds of casualties in this battle scene.
      I guess the movie was inspired from this battle:
      "About 1.5 km to the north, a bicycle platoon prepared a defence of a railway bridge, but fire from the armoured cars and strafing fighter aircraft forced them to retreat, and a third of them were captured. The Germans lost two armoured cars and three motorcycles, while the Danes suffered one dead and one wounded."

    • @williamtyson9503
      @williamtyson9503 3 роки тому +1

      you shouldnt dismiss what the wikipedia sources say, tho.
      "In his first monograph, author Kay Søren Nielsen states that in the archives of the Danish weapons manufacturer DISA ('Danish Industrial Syndicate'), 203 German soldiers were claimed to be killed in Jutland.[33] However, the report is considered an exaggeration.[34][35]"
      "In 2015, the Journal of Military History, Krigshistorisk Tidsskrift, published an article for the Royal Danish Defence College (RDDC), in which military correspondent Lt. Col Jürgensen H.J. (ret.) summarized key points in the German invasion. He argued that actual German losses were 2-3 killed and 25-30 wounded, and that the Danish military suffered a confirmed 16 dead and 20 wounded. Casualties among the civil resistance is not certain, but are given as 10 dead and 3 wounded." (from Jürgensen, H.J. March 2015. "Krigshistorisk Tidsskrift") The other source is Zebeckis book, both are considered reliable.
      The Danish are considered as having exaggerated German losses, and the accepted casualty is even or higher Danish casualties
