Also, one more thing - If you want the "Repair when on 1 HP" achievement ; put yourself in a asteroid field when you have several layers of shields - De-power and take damaged controlled as you see fit. Then go repair. Requires a shop nearby, tho.
ADVICE: 1. Try to get long range scanners early and avoid dangerous beacons. 2. Let your crew finish off intruders, especially Mantis and Rockmen, to make them stronger. 3. If you get 5 or 6 crewmen, and 2 are Mantis or Rockmen, buy a teleporter. They will easily take out the weapons rooms on the flagship. 4. Take down those shields and focus on the pilot (esp. mind control) and you will stop missing shots. 5. Take your time moving through the sector and time your exit as close to the rebels as possible. Sometimes you can visit 3 extra beacons and jump into fighting for the exit in the earlier sectors. 6. I love watching you get better at FTL! Keep it up!
Nice run Ryan, Some comments about this episode: - Firing lasers in sync is indeed the ideal way to go usually, less of them wasted on enemy shields that way. You can shoot Ion weapons slightly in advance of lasers to weaken shields, but that's indeed the way to go usually. - I hope eventually you'll change your boarding management so that it gives you valuable combat and repair experience, suffocating the enemy works but it gives no benefits. - Attacking the shield when ships can't hurt you can often help you finish them off quicker. - The map shows how far the rebels advance each turn, it's easy to estimate how far they'll be going so there's no need to rush leaving, one or two extra encounters per sector can add up quickly. I hope you get to unlock some new ships soon, they often force the player to change his style constantly, which is fun.
Loving the daily FTL episodes! Maybe just a random assortment of trivial help! Today it'll be sub-systems: - Don't get door level 2 (you can move someone to get it temp) - Consider getting level 2 sensors for blue (good) events - End-game consider getting level 2 oxygen to deal with boarding drone breach.
When you're trying to suffocate boarders, turn off your ships Oxygen Supply. Open rooms will drain 2x faster. Destroying any enemy ship yields medium rewards, but if you can kill the crew and keep the ship intact, the rewards will surely be superior.
I can't understand why some folks seem to take issue with these videos being split up. It's completely reasonable for several reasons: - 40 - 50 minutes is more than enough content for a single video. - It reduces the time it takes for the content to be uploaded, and means the HD quality version is available to you faster - A single 90 minute video is low revenue for Ryan considering the amount of time and effort that goes into it (I refuse to use Adblock). Anyway, keep up the good work NL. I love having these videos on while I'm slogging through my homework.
NL i'm loving your ftl videos I started playing this right after your first video. After I lose I watch one then alternate and pretty much alot of good pro tips just from watching the comments yell them at you.Got my first kestral win on this video and got the tough little ship unlock then went on to beat the boss with just 1 hull left thanks to burst laser II and burst laser III.Aparently its easier to win if you never lock on to the shield compartment if you shoot rapidly enough and have invisiblity.
Getting a teleporter is a nice thing with so many crew. Taking over ships without destroying them yields much more scrap. Can also do that with Bio weapon or fire weapons. And taking out O2.
Northernlion - You somehow amaze me yet till this day. You put out so much more content then others, and your content is long ; yet awesome. You are awesome.
Fortunately, NL, the show "Five Aliens and a Human" was made a couple of decades ago--they called it "Farscape," but I agree that the more literal title would be better.
Also, you can level up combat experience with the boarding events. Venting is nice, if the enemies are difficult (rock, crystal, lanius, mantis) but if it's just a bunch of humans, you should funnel them into medbay and level up your crew
Northern lion!!!! Killing the crew only gives you bigger rewards (like so he can see) (also with mind control if your mind controlled unit is the only one left destroy the oxygen the let him die)
aftter literally saying you would go to a slug World if it was offered, you just ignored it... also, stop buyig upgrades right efore jumping sector, the arrival Point is never hotile and as you saw earlier, they can spam shops at you right at the entrance
>Recognizes that lanius crew members don't need oxygen. >Gets lanius crew member. >Gets hull breaches, the vacuums they make, and also fires on the next encounter. >Uses humans, engineers, and the vacuum of space to fix it all. >leaves lanius in a systemless room doing nothing. >removes engineer because he is dying in a vacuum. Certainly couldn't have avoided that. >Has human leave medbay to repair the gun deck which has a vacuum in it, and is also literally neighboring the lanius' room. >Leaves every single problem the lanius' oxygen stealing ability specializes at to be solved by squishy humans and engis. >Becomes Nobel prize in space logic recipient.
The nice thing about getting boarded, if you yourself are using crew teleport and have a crew with melee skill, is that they are free xp for your boarders. It also is a little more fun to deal with boarders if you keep a weapon that can target your own ship like a small bomb.
the Advanced Edition is amazing for me, i love that later in the sector when you want to buy crew they actally have some skilles learned and sometimes you can find better dudes than yours for specific rooms.
"Now, we know that we're probably going to have at least some time to jump around on the next floor before we find a store..." Two stores first thing on the next floor. I certainly felt that coming. =p
Northernlion, in ftl episode 8 part one you mentioned wanting to be able to delay one of your ion blasts on the Zoltan ship slightly so that both of them wouldn't hit the shields. you can do that by switching the position of one of the ion blasts with the pike beam on your weapons bar. doing this will put the ion blast farther back on your ship making it so it takes longer to travel to the enemy ship. I love the ftl episodes Northerlion, keep at it and maybe one day you will get a good run that will let you beat the boss on ftl advanced edition!
Ryan put engis in more important rooms like shields, weapons etc. , because a mantis will repair them really slowly ( no shit) and it might result you in taking more hull damage.
I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but if you go against a ship that cannot damage you (Example, the ship at 25:10 when you had two shield), you should avoid shooting the weapons. His single laser will only take one shield and the bean can't break shields. But, if the laser misses, you get skill in Pilot and Engines, and if it hits your shield, you get Shield exp. Also, my personal preference, I would not should shields in that case, just to extend the fight to get a couple more shots off for weapon exp.
Letting intruders die of lack of oxygen is nice and all, but they are actually pretty useful. You can train your crewmembers fighting skill easily with them.
It's not pre-unlocked in AE, actually. You have to either beat the game with an Engi ship, or earn it by destroying the half-built flagship in the Rebel Stronghold. If he did play the Federation Cruiser, I must have just missed that episode. Or are you talking about the Kestrel Cruiser, which is what he's playing in this episode? Because that's the ship you start with.
I have actually felt the same way NL felt against that Pirate Merchant, FTL sometimes frustrates me so much, I take joy in refusing the pleas of the NPCs to let them live. The joys of video game spaceships.
NL when attacking someone who you know does not have enough damage to get through your shields don't attack their weapons at all, because your crew members can level up from it and there is no point to even doing it.
22:30 So you basically depleted all your saved scrab before leaving the sector again... *AFTER* you jumped into this very same sector where there where two stores at the beginning and none while traveling through? Talking about learning curve here. xD You were lucky it kinda worked out.
some help -use the fed cruiser -find and asteroid field by a shop to get that achievement -when you have excess scrap buy buffer bars for your systems -mind control is kind of useless
Enjoying your series so far NL, unfortunately haven't had the opportunity to load this AE up since it's release. Been busy playing State of Decay and Starbound =P
Lonies (or however their name is spelled) couldbe very good defensive/offensive combatants, considering the oxygen drain. Make sure to use them. The more the better, maybe?
JD Nikolo I got boarded by two Humans and a Lanius, they all went into the weapons room and the Lanius killed the two humans because he sucked out all the oxygen and suffocated his own shipmates. He did the work for me, then I sent my rockman and mantis to kill the Lanius, then I got a advanced flak cannon from the ship. It was great.
Chernobyl Bear They are kind of double-edged indeed. Leaving the room they are open though will make it have enough oxygen for them humans to survive, though
+JD Nikolo If you have one Lanius he/she should be on engines on the The kestrel, with all the rooms in the back open to space hence anyone (except other Lanius') trying to attack the engines or O2 will have a very bad time and it's also very effective against fire in those sections XD
if one single human boards you and you havee a mantis and some humans lying araound, why DO you take the slow route of the dooropening puzzle instead of just killing it?
If you open all your interior doors with the exterior doors closed still and you have Lanius crew members, will they drain oxygen from the entire opened area? As in do you know whether they will drain oxygen from adjoining rooms that are open?
The reason the boarding seems awful is because you arn't using it to your advantage. Having a good boarding crew practically doubles the amount of scrap/weapons you get from beating ships. Easy way to gain the ability to beat people up is to do so from the safety of your med bay. Once ya know what your doing when ya punch you take the fight to the enemy ships. Makes hacking with mind control crazy powerful too. Hack the shields mind control the person in the shields then port more of your own people to the shields.
Flaks are about the best weapon in game! Chain lasers generally suck because they take time to do good dmg and that's time you can't disable anything! (if you manage to get 4 flaks by the end of the game you will burst the rebel flag ship in no time at all, it's amazing! (12 shots every ten seconds as a synchronized burst is just too good!) Oh and if you have a choice take the smaller ones since the big ones take way too long to charge!
loving the game and the content you are giving, but yea it made the game alot harder but some of the ships a bit more easy to get, no clue if the quests are still in it like before.
NL! You should really try to have your mantis and human crew fight invaders so they get stronger against boarders late game. 1 person fighting in powered medbay can usually kill 2-3 invaders
another thing I noticed... When you get new crew, you dont check if they have any proficient skills that often... you might get a guy pimpin at say weapons, and u put them on doors instead ;)
Wow got invaded by 2 Lanius yesterday. They are horrible. They don't die by starving them of oxygen and when you fight them with your crew they lose their oxygen and die. Nl has been pretty lucky not to be boarded by them.
17:30 - You'd have a better chance at being a decent boarder if you had your crew actually fight invaders - and not miss out on the experience leveling up their fight skill - instead of just letting the oxygen deprivation technique both rob you of that experience and put yourself into what can easily turn into a dangerous situation in the event that something else goes wrong with the ship when most of the oxygen is already gone. Don't get me wrong - it's not a bad tactic, it's just far too risky in some situations, especially when most of the ship is now dangerous to your own crew.
Y'know, NL, you're such a good let's player, and I'm glad you brought this much attention to the indie/roguelike scene; but, why do you talk so fast and so much? You don't need to talk all the time to entertain us, you know.
It's just Northernlions style of commentating. Rapid-fire possibly-adult-oriented humor while occasionally talking about the game in question, maybe that's why he never notices things that might seem obvious to viewers, he's to busy making this an entertaining video to notice.
Come on, I've said it before and will say it again - you find boarding tedious because you don't fight. During my FTL lifespan I got pretty decent at finishing the flagship and in all those successful runs I don't think I've ever upgraded the doors on ships other than Zoltan. When intruders come - you just kill them with your crew. After you get decent at microing your fighters you can easily dispatch even the 4-drops without letting them leave the room they've boarded, but even now it really is a bit annoying to see you sucking the oxygen and waiting for intruders to suffocate when there's only 1 guy and you even have a mantis in your crew, not mentioning a million spare humans.
you know if you kill all the crew of the ship without destroying it you get better rewards. it's the good thing about boarding
Much prefer the bio beam for that though
Xenoun What in the hell is a bio-beam? I've never even seen that.
It comes with the slug ship but you can get it on any of the others too. It's a beam weapon that only hurts crew, makes killing them very easy.
Ah ok I just got FTL and haven't seen it on any of NL's videos
He isn't exactly the best person to watch if you're learning the game....unless you want to know what not to do.
Also, one more thing - If you want the "Repair when on 1 HP" achievement ; put yourself in a asteroid field when you have several layers of shields - De-power and take damaged controlled as you see fit.

zorkan111 Yes! If you open all the doors internally, it prevents that room from being de-oxygenated.

dammit man, i didnt end the video yet, but why the hell you dont place a lanius on the O2 room!? he dont need it and if broke he can fix right away
You're mad about that but not the mantis in the shields room when he has an engi in the sensors?
Ste yedea I haven't seen it yet but was the mantis skilled?
...it confused me more that he did not repair the 19:54 breach with the Lanius.
I was yelling this while watching. Lanius in the O2 room is a great setup.

Why do you upgrade before you jump/warp to the next sector?
My tip is wait until you jumped to the next sector incase there is a shop.
''I fire at oxygen because ti's a high priority for repair.'' Holy shit, NL actually showed educated competence for a game, good tactics!
The nice thing about getting boarded, if you yourself are using crew teleport and have a crew with melee skill, is that they are free xp for your boarders. It also is a little more fun to deal with boarders if you keep a weapon that can target your own ship like a small bomb.

This series convinced me to get the game, keep up the great episodes NL!

Two stores first thing on the next floor. I certainly felt that coming. =p

That's a thing this game always amasses me
I'm not sure if you've used the flak cannon before and seen its true power, but watching you pass it up not once, but twice, had me in hysterics.
Ryan put engis in more important rooms like shields, weapons etc. , because a mantis will repair them really slowly ( no shit) and it might result you in taking more hull damage.
Hey NL aggressive boarding is actually useful. If the ship stays intact and all the crew is killed you will get a bonus on scrap.
boarding is cool if you have a clone bay so you can just keep sending clones over to the other ship
"3rd rock from the sun" was almost 5 aliens and a human and it was hilarious.
2 parts again? At least he's getting consistant.
I died a little inside when he bought the chain lasers instead of the flak gun.
I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but if you go against a ship that cannot damage you (Example, the ship at 25:10 when you had two shield), you should avoid shooting the weapons. Maybe when you unlock layout B of kestrel you can go for layout C of the Federation Cruiser.
Letting intruders die of lack of oxygen is nice and all, but they are actually pretty useful. You can train your crewmembers fighting skill easily with them.
But you unlocked the Federation Cruiser! It's got a built-in beam weapon that ignores shields. I was looking forward to seeing you play that...
its NL, what were you expecting?
in the advanced edition its pre-unlocked, he played it on one of his earlier episodes
TheILChrias95 if it was pre-unlocked i wouldn't be working my ass off trying to find the shipyard
Joshua Rutterbush
He did beat the half-built flagship - So you are correct, it is not pre-unlocked.
I have actually felt the same way NL felt against that Pirate Merchant, FTL sometimes frustrates me so much, I take joy in refusing the pleas of the NPCs to let them live. The joys of video game spaceships.
Such smooth transitions!
NL when attacking someone who you know does not have enough damage to get through your shields don't attack their weapons at all, because your crew members can level up from it and there is no point to even doing it.
Offensive Boarding is the most fun I have in this game. You also get loads more scrap for killing everybody on the ship without destroying it.
22:30 So you basically depleted all your saved scrab before leaving the sector again... *AFTER* you jumped into this very same sector where there where two stores at the beginning and none while traveling through?
Talking about learning curve here. xD
You were lucky it kinda worked out.
Another two part episode? Jeez, you're spoiling us :D
some help
-use the fed cruiser
-find and asteroid field by a shop to get that achievement
-when you have excess scrap buy buffer bars for your systems
-mind control is kind of useless
Enjoying your series so far NL, unfortunately haven't had the opportunity to load this AE up since it's release. Been busy playing State of Decay and Starbound =P
As soon as you got the Lanius my thought was use him with a teleporter! He can remove the oxygen and get the upper hand on his enemies
Translator the Lanius - He is the Bob Dylan of alien communication. Using cards and stuff.
NL you should take a look at the Captain's mod for FTL. It adds even more things to FTL for example you can battle fuel stations and many more
yea but it doesn't work with AE ( or at least not with my one)
Don't stop liking this Shit. I want NL to never stop playing it. Ever.
i just want you to know that these are the best
Lonies (or however their name is spelled) couldbe very good defensive/offensive combatants, considering the oxygen drain. Make sure to use them. The more the better, maybe?
*****
Yeah, I didn't know the name of their race.

They are kind of double-edged indeed. Leaving the room they are open though will make it have enough oxygen for them humans to survive, though
+JD Nikolo
If you have one Lanius he/she should be on engines on the The kestrel, with all the rooms in the back open to space hence anyone (except other Lanius') trying to attack the engines or O2 will have a very bad time and it's also very effective against fire in those sections XD
Nebulas are the best for scrap because you can do more jumps before the rebels reach you.
if one single human boards you and you havee a mantis and some humans lying araound, why DO you take the slow route of the dooropening puzzle instead of just killing it?
Just a tip NL, if you open all of your interior doors you can spread oxygen throughout your ship from oxygen rich to oxygen deficient rooms.
If you open all your interior doors with the exterior doors closed still and you have Lanius crew members, will they drain oxygen from the entire opened area? As in do you know whether they will drain oxygen from adjoining rooms that are open?
Karasu Hatake the lanius are like walking breaches so yes they wil drain
The reason the boarding seems awful is because you arn't using it to your advantage. Having a good boarding crew practically doubles the amount of scrap/weapons you get from beating ships. Easy way to gain the ability to beat people up is to do so from the safety of your med bay. Once ya know what your doing when ya punch you take the fight to the enemy ships. NL You should always put someone in the door room so when you're being invaded like at 33:25 instead of just having your crew do nothing!
Love the Longer episodes NL :D
You can capture enemy ships with a teleporter, and if you manage to kill all their crew. More stuff if you succeed.
hey NL, the lanius are perfect for fixing breaches in rooms because they dont need air
loving the game and the content you are giving, but yea it made the game alot harder but some of the ships a bit more easy to get, no clue if the quests are still in it like before.
If you wanna learn boarding, the last federation big cruiser is amazing ;D
Outsiders reference at 30:40
Wow NL.
NL! You should really try to have your mantis and human crew fight invaders so they get stronger against boarders late game. 1 person fighting in powered medbay can usually kill 2-3 invaders
and also take out the damn shield first for the love of the scum!
But besides my ravings thanks so much for this content NL!
13:24 they fired a system-Damage based Bomb that does NO hull damage on a Systemless room. Sometimes the AI is just weird...
Nl, you should keep your airlocks open at all times so you can put out fires faster.
around 18 minutes in you should have bought the mark II drone for the 24 scrap. You can sell it later for like 37
Found out that the cloning bay works on crew that die during events.
Are the Lanius made of liquid metal?
Love these videos
another thing I noticed... When you get new crew, you dont check if they have any proficient skills that often... you might get a guy pimpin at say weapons, and u put them on doors instead ;)
try playing as the mantis ship, you will do a lot of boarding with them
Northern lion compromises his possibility of getting th red tail by not choosing to go to the slug controlled nebula >.
Lanius + boarding is a scary combo
Fuck yeah it is.
Wow got invaded by 2 Lanius yesterday. They are horrible. They don't die by starving them of oxygen and when you fight them with your crew they lose their oxygen and die. Nl has been pretty lucky not to be boarded by them.
one simple rule: don't go to any shop with less than 95 scrap, if you are not in dire need of sth like fuel or repairs...
just had a run all but 2 sectors were nebula and all the points i jumped to were ion storms yay
2:23 he's a mantis put him in the medbay and use him as boarder control
I saw one time you sent your engi to fix a breach butt if you use launius to fix it then no one will lose health
The Kestrel again where is my resident sleeper emote when I need it
Captain Northernlion takes no prisoners! and takes no surrender!
NL always take the flak cannon. It melts shields.
Tomo was yelling at Ryan for not manning his Engines >_>
NL any particular reason why you enjoy breaking up the episodes? Not a big deal but personally I like single game = single episode.
NO FIRST'S SHALL PASS
You got Starbuck on your ship!
Use the lonius to fix breaches and put out fire!
30:40 The Outsiders?
The reason you're so under powered when you get to the flagship is cause you don't take enough jumps, you always leave with so much potential
mr. oxygen has just subscribed
use the lanius to put out fires, as he will put it out faster without needing to open doors
The mantis should be on weapons, as they're better at it. If i'm not mistaken
he should use the laniens crew to fight to intruders
Five aliens and a Human the Show? Farscape.
It drives me NUTS how he attacks the weapon systems when they can't penetrate his shields no matter what.
Yay more FTL

probably money! but it could be faster to upload! :D
Does it really matter? He always uploads part 2 before you could even finish watching part 1.....
Twice the revenue and tbh, a video over 40 minutes is pretty damn long.
Worth pointing out as well that by splitting it up in two, you can get both videos to be HQ faster.
Instead of starving boarders of oxygen everytime try fighting them especially when you have a mantis
man did he get screwed on drops for those first few sectors
Y'know, NL, you're such a good let's player, and I'm glad you brought this much attention to the indie/roguelike scene; but, why do you talk so fast and so much? You don't need to talk all the time to entertain us, you know.
It's just Northernlions style of commentating. Rapid-fire possibly-adult-oriented humor while occasionally talking about the game in question, maybe that's why he never notices things that might seem obvious to viewers, he's to busy making this an entertaining video to notice.

Don't forget those obscure references!
Yeah I know, it just seems forced sometimes; but I guess it's not.
Maybe you are not familiarized with motor-mouth people?
I think I am such type so I really don't mind NL's commentary at all.
probably because I'm a lethargic person whos psyche eval said he had low information processing ability.
30:38 I got even though I shouldn't... Fuck english class!
