This game pushes so many more polygons than the OG Rush port. I wish SF Rush looked this great on the 64- it would have been close to arcade-perfect! Scenes like distant hills and the Golden Gate Bridge visible miles away on long jumps really awed you in the 1997 arcade game. But the first N64 port cut that draw distance and hid draw-in with fog.
I played 2049 for years on the Dreamcast, and only discovered that there was a N64 version of it in 2007, years later. And the game really shocked me for being so alike the Dreamcast version. Even the framerate can be achieved with the Expansion Pack. This is definally the best one of the entire series. I can only hope that someday they release another Rush or a spiritual successor.

played this on the Dreamcast. it was a blast to play split-screen in any mode, and the medal collecting was addictive and challenging. One of my top racers of all time, if not the top.
Incredible game - we used to play 4 player combat religiously, in many ways I felt it was better than Mario Kart 64! The graphics were in a league of their own, incredibly sharp and detailed combined with epic scale - the control was tight as well. The sound was a massive step up from the prior Rush N64 titles utilising Factor 5 MusyX tech. Good review.
I still remember playing this game on the Dreamcast and resident evil 3 around the same time. They were some of the last games before moving away from my childhood home. It’s bittersweet even thinking about this game
3:25 wow stunt mode is a flashback. Four of us 9-10 year olds sleeping over friends house, someone rented this and we were literally up ALL NIGHT taking turns in stunt mode to see who can get the best score. The one and only time I played this game, but had to be for 8+ hours that night. I remember you could deploy wings while in the air and get longer distances too. Good times.
I got to say that I really appreciate this channel. It helped me get back games I could never actually own when I was younger. Only rent. And it also introduced me to other games that I now adore. Rush 2049 being the latter, I really enjoyed it. Even more so than other racers I've played on the N64. And I really loved that genre on the system.
I remember getting this for Christmas with the rumble pack. I loved this game so much and would love a updated remaster on current consoles. The stunt courses was amazing IMO please get this on current console
They first made a free game called Nitronic RUSH. Distance is a spiritual successor to it. Both Nitronic, and Distance are set in the far future, instead of the near future like San Francisco Rush 2049 was.
I've owned both versions of this game and is by far my favorite racing game ever! I grew up with this as my go to racing game as I've played many racers before this and even the previous Rush game's, but this one single game solidified racing in my blood. I'm here now because I had a relapse moment and now I think I'm gonna look for this game again 😎
I loved this, it improved on everything in the first two games. Made great use of the expansion pak too, with some beautiful graphics and smooth gameplay. The wings were a logical addition, but I felt they were a mixed blessing. They removed the frustration of not being able to control your landing, but it also lost some of the satisfaction of landing on your wheels without exploding. Using them almost felt like cheating. "Objectively" speaking, it was the best in the series, but I still prefer the original. It's just more memorable to me, despite Rush 2049 being more refined in every aspect.
Rush 2049 gives me awesome flashbacks!!! I remember playing two player with my friend not to race against him but to help in finding the coins for engine upgrades! It was a team effort getting some of them and it helped with having two different cars at once as some cars worked better then others at retrieving coins in well hidden places or tight spots!!! Oh how the camaraderie has gone out the window with todays games!!
I wish this game had more race tracks. Other than that, it's one of the best arcade racers of all time. The little things they added, like an obstacle course, and unlockable cars in the stunt mode really added to the length of the game. A lot of the other arcade racers at the time had little content in them.
spent hours in battle mode and races with my friend when we were kids. She made up a rule on our favorite track that for every mile we drove, we had to sit at the gas station "filling up" for 5 seconds.
Hard question there glenn, im torn between rush 1 and 2 for my fav. I reckon id have to go with rush 2 just for the stunt track. Me and my mate used to sit their for hours and hours just smashing round that track. Fantastic reviews by the way.
Explosions and Stuff If you think that's a Rush game, sorry, pal. It's a midnight club clone that was developed as a Fast and Furious game that Midway lost the movie rights to while the game was in development, so they slapped the Rush name on there to try and sell at least a few copies. It might share the name, but it has nothing to do with the originals. We all would have loved another Rush game, they were right about that, but unfortunately, we never actually got one after 2049. ☹️
There WERE the ports of Rush the Rock and the Dreamcast version of 2049 to GameCube, PS2, and Xbox in Midway Arcade Treasures 3, but those versions are TERRIBLE ports, and, even so, they're just rereleases. 😕
@@brendan9734 I hate to break it to you, but the Fast and Furious arcade game went on to be Crusin' after they lost the movie rights to it, and had absolutely nothing to do with the Rush franchise.
I always found it had that slight touch of sixth generation graphics with the fluid frame rate and refection. The footage here is not like when playing it in person.
Isn't funny how each progressive game in the franchise had a lower and lower damage scale? SF Rush had multi-staged damage on five parts of the car, Rush 2 had only "damaged" or "not damaged" sections of the car, and SF Rush 2049 had no damage. >_>
I put a ton of time into the first two Rush games but never had this version growing up. Of the first two games I thought Rush 2 was better but I loved collecting everything from both games like the Keys and Mt. Dew cans. I'm going to pick this game up but I'm not sure which version I'll go with. I am a huge N64 fanboy and it is without a doubt my favorite console of all time but I may get the Dreamcast version simply because it is a superior version.
This is the first game that brought out the true completionist in me. Once I collected all the coins I would coach my friends how to do the same. Many, many hours and days of split screen fun.
this game was my favorite of all the rush games. I could never find it to buy but my local blockbuster always had a copy in stock. Walked 30 min each way during the summer vacation just to rent this gem
amazing set of reviews! I loved the three of them, and I want to try these games as soon as I can. I didn't know the N64 had such great racing games. I imagine the Atari team of Rush has nothing to do with the Atari team of Test Drive, right? Because I love that game physics, and these seem as fun. Keep it up, Glenn!
Great series, Glenn. This was definitely one of my favorite racers for the time. I know you're an N64 guy, but if you're interested, the Rush series (specifically 2049) has a spiritual successor called Nitronic Rush (nitronic-rush.com/). It's completely free and will really satisfy any craving for Rush 2049 action you still may have lingering.
This game is in the arcade on the Vancouver Island ferry! Finish top 5 and you get a free game. Hold music at the track select screen to unlock the last couple courses! Extreme handling is near impossible. Shortcuts are hard to see due to the colourful and neon palette the game uses. I've now played all the rush games, great arcade game!
This game was amazing. The cars were tuned so much better. You had more control than in any other "Rush" game. The theme of the game definitely helped as well. I'd say this was the "Rush" title to own. The original was a classic but this was the masterpiece.
This has always been my all-time favorite game. Thank you so much ***** for doing this series, the Rush games are an important part of classic arcade racing history. This game was tough to beat (complete at least). Takes patience and time, and rewards you for doing so; definitely worth the money. I feel the title has even aged well. I do feel not mentioning the cheat menu is leaving out a huge part of the game... it took practice to learn how to perform the button combos necessary to activate the menu and each individual cheat. Very rewarding when you can consistently get the cheats activated. This feature breathed life into the game time and time again. Stunt mode was a ton of fun, (WITH WINGS) If you do a roll in each direction and then land and tumble a bit(invincibility on), you can't beat the points... Please don't forget the Obstacle mode either... An awesome treat for those that stick with the game... Also, I loved the multiplayer battle mode, 4 player FFA, awesome.
@@RedstonePyroMan I STILL play this game!! I've been playing the Midway Arcade Treasures 3 GameCube version lately. GameCube HDMI adapter + Swiss to force progressive scan. Gameplay really holds up, and on the GameCube (It's the Dreamcast Port) it looks like a remaster compared to the N64.
@@ChrisBurnes I tried the MAT3 port a few years ago to try and avoid buying a Dreamcast. It is an insult to the game by comparison. Unfortunately a Dreamcast isn't $40 anymore...it's $110. Video games unfortunately aren't worth the money nowadays. It's up to you how bad you want to play the ultimate graphical version of RUSH 2049. I still say the N64 version is definitive with the superior soundtrack and color customization. All Barry Leitch beats man
@@RedstonePyroMan There is a collection of the "remastered" N64 Rush soundtrack on UA-cam. I took this and inserted it into the MAT3 GameCube version. It still doesn't have the better color customization like the N64, but it drives SO WELL. and being able to use the GameCube controller joysticks allows for such precise control that the Pro Slicks are a viable option. Edit: You can play the GameCube version on the Dolphin emulator.
@@ChrisBurnes my problem was with the controls. Both the N64 and DC versions allowed total freedom of mapping the controls. MAT3 locks you into a terrible configuration. No acceleration if your RT "click" is broken. I actually avoid the click in racers like NFS Undergound to preserve the controller
i have Rush 2049 on both N64 and Dreamcast! i love it 2 death :D i also have San Francisco Rush Extreme Racing and Rush 2 but as much as i would favor Rush 2049, all 3 were awesome
Great review! Although I've pretty much given up hope of seeing another Rush game, Nitronic Rush & its spiritual successor, Distance, seem to offer similar gameplay. Definitely not the same pacing, but that same arcade style fun.
My favorite Rush game would have to be 2049, but only because it's the only one I played. I got this back in 2005 - don't remember how I acquired it - and was impressed with how well it looked and played. The Stunt mode was fun and is what I remember most about 2049
I find Rush 2049 to the best but San Francisco Rush has more of a nostalgia factor for me, since I played it way more(owned SFR but only rented 2049 then). I loved the stunt mode, it was new to me since I didn't play Rush 2.
This game was better for racing, but I felt that the first one was more fun to explore. I can't remember a single one of the secret areas in 2049, but that loop in the first track in Rush 1 is forever burnt into my mind.
i loved that game, there was the usual track ie road and then there were all the stunts/shortcuts. just trying to get those shortcuts was great in itself.
This was my favorite arcade game as a kid. I love it so much. Really should pick it up on N64, but I've got the port on Gamecube, as a part of the Midway collection.
As previously commented on your RUSH review, I love all of these games but, after careful consideration (years ago!) I finally decided that 2049 was the overall best of the 3. I prefer the track designs here, overall. The last 2 tracks you unlock are just amazing. I did the coin collecting with a friend in 2P and we had great fun collecting them all. The Gauntlet is an amazing time trial game. And, as mentioned by others, imo... the battle mode in this game is the best vehicular combat game in history! The weapons combined with those RUSH physics just makes for some amazing combat manoeuvre possibilities. Again, Stunt Mode makes for some highly entertaining multiplayer... even if it is random, like another viewer said. RUSH 2049 really is one of the best racing games ever.
Out of all your videos this is the first one where I was amazed at the graphics. Can't believe how good it looks especially compared to the other 2 in the series. Sent me straight to eBay but typically like all the later PAL releases seems to cost an arm and a leg!
Damn! I've never been so impressed by a game that so clearly looked and ran better on a different platform! Yet having just been watching San Franscisco Rush 1/2 vids, this is clearly leaps and bounds ahead.
👍👍 rush 2049 is still my fave non-sim racer of all time. love it so much i've owned both the n64 and dreamcast versions and even contacted barry leitch, the guy who did the awesome OST to ask if he could send me the full n64 and dreamcast soundtracks - which he did! the game had such a unique blend of styles and still holds up extremely well today.
Never knew about Hot Rod Rebels untill I saw this vid. My souls just crushed after seeing footage of it :(. The Rush franchise is one of my all time favorite racing franchises and to now find out there was supposed to be a successor..just devastating.
2049 by far is my fav. I played the arcade version first and those jumps made you feel like you are flying. So then got the N64 version when I could. And I have the remake on Xbox which is the Dreamcast version.
This game was very fun to play with a friend in the stunt or battle mode, i enjoyed this game alot as a kid, definitely one of the funnest racing games on the console asides from Cruisin the world.
I spent an insane amount of time in the stunt tracks and and the race levels to find every single collectible and complete every part of the game. Probably well over a hundred hours.
Probably one of my favorites Rush series after rush 1. But i just could buy it on dreamcast. ^^; The game himself show a huge variety courses and hidden as well. But overall the the car control would be more hard as he's predecessor. ^^
I never heard of this one, but seeing the gameplay here I'm sad I didn't have a chance to play it. My favourite was San Francisco Rush, Probably because out of the previous two, it was the one I spent the most time with, but the memories are there and that's what I look back on.
In my Opinion Rush 2 was the best in the Series, however I never played 2049 very much since I never owned it myself. I guess the awful L.A. Rush killed the Franchise off for good. Just wondering: Why did you mention the wings feature but never showed it in the video?
Soonjai I looked at the back of the box of L.A. Rush and knew from the screenshots that I will be disappointed. Gladly, I put it back on the shelf and didn't pick it up. It's not even a Rush game anymore... :(
I wanna ask you a simple question..will u be able to tell? In the battle mode..in stages like Plaza, how to fire bullet through walls? I mean how do they peirce bullets? Thanks duh
This game was amazing :3 The new Rocket Race game in Fortnite has the same vibes. It's crazy how much of the skill from this game, translates to Rocket Race.
@@n64glennplant That's more than fair :) Obviously the controls are nearly completely different, but the overall strats and timing is very close. Whoever made the new game must have grown up with this gem too! I love that we're old enough and skilled enough to bring back the best type of loops.
Rush 2049 is def the best futuristic racer on the Nintendo 64 besides F-Zero X, Wipeout 64, Hydro Thunder and i think the N64 version is on par with the Dreamcast version, the game has great graphics, soundtrack, smooth gameplay and offers great variety of customization.
Greatest combat racing game ever made period. We loved it on the Dreamcast because you could assign button layout. The games an instant classic. My friends and I had a blast playing it for hours and hours. Combat Mode rules!!! Soooo much fun...we laughed our heads off. You can play with up to 4 players. So epic. It is still an absolute blast. Twisted Metal what...Twisted Metal Smishded Metal naaaa San Francisco 2049 is where it's at. Thumbs way up. Racing Mode is cool too...so is Stunt Mode.
i played the crap out of this game as a kid from 2001 to 2006 funny part was i didnt even know about the expansion pack till later which added even more to the fun. it took forever to get all the coins in the stunt stages. hated that part... i used to try and find way to get out of bounds or glitches. the game is over all pretty clean of those but all the secrets they hid were fun to find. the best one being the hidden stunt/test course in track 2. also i like to time myself with the jets that would fly by on track 3 to see how far they throw me lol. good times!
I hate to say 2049 was my least favorite of the Rush series. Probably because I just couldn't get into the "futuristic" cars. Which is odd because I found the futuristic tracks really quite impressive, especially at night with the lava lamps and neon lights... just impressive how creative the devs were. And some of the product placement (Dickies? Really?) just didn't have the same high thrills vibe like Mountain Dew. If someone could create a mod for the 2049 tracks and game play with the Rush 2 cars, I would play Thule shit out of it..... maybe someone can convert the circuits to Assetto Corsa.
Watching your trilogy of reviews, I am genuinely gutted I missed Rush 2049 (and the other two) when first released back in the day. I think I would have put many hours into this, still I did enjoy F Zero X with mates but this would have been a tidy title as well. I have no idea how I missed this - funny how you can miss some top titles :)
Both Rush 2 and Rush 2049 were leagues better than SF Rush, but they both have pros and cons over the other. Rush 2... - More cars. - More racing levels. - Cheats are easy to utilize, as it is a chore to use them in 2049. - 2 player death circuit. Rush 2049... - Better graphics - 4 stunt tracks - An 8 track battle mode that matches both Mario Kart and Goldeneye. - Coins are much harder to get than the keys in Rush 2, so game play lasts much longer.
I remember this game from a long time ago, I played it everysingle day and is my most favourite game EVER, it is super fun, even at this year 2015, it is still a great game now, though I think the graphics are better in the game than in this video, I don't remember the game being so choppy edges like in this video, I think it did look much better. I also loved deathmatch on this game, and all the maps had unique secrets and routes to be found, I didn't find them all, but the gameplay is SOOO Fun, I do recommend anyway to play this game, it's the best game ever in my opinion :D!
I should start recording some dreamcast gameplay and upload it, I still play it til this day. If you ever feel like breaking your rule and want to review the dreamcast version, or Rush: the Rock on gamecube or something like that, give me a holler and I'll whip up some gameplay for you so we don't have to watch you crash a bunch (not saying that in a mean way, I just don't like seeing my baby getting hurt like that).
You never put your wings out in any of the footage :(
***** Or show the battle mode :(

The draw distance is pretty impressive for N64 standards, theres no fog or pop up!
1:41 i dont know why but the jump down into a big expansive section of road just looks impressive and dare i say beautiful even.
fog actually causes more lag on n64, it's just a trick to smoothly hide far away objects getting culled out

The n64 runs at 30 fps, not the 60 fps for the Dreamcast..!
It did get a sequel called L.A Rush

Would love to see this series return. Just imagine what they could do now with current systems and would be awesome online.
Dude I would love to talk to somebody like you in person. I've barely even met anyone who's even played this game
I actually avoid the click in racers like NFS Undergound to preserve the controller
you never mentioned there was also a cabinet version of this that made the arcades
see you guys back here in 29 years!
i have Rush 2049 on both N64 and Dreamcast! i love it 2 death :D i also have San Francisco Rush Extreme Racing and Rush 2 but as much as i would favor Rush 2049, all 3 were awesome
No mention of the unlockable obstacle course? That kept me and my bro busy for weeks
This was my favorite arcade game as a kid. I love it so much. Really should pick it up on N64, but I've got the port on Gamecube, as a part of the Midway collection.
no matter how you play I think its still fun
@@n64glennplant For sure!
san francisco looks like this now
As previously commented on your RUSH review, I love all of these games but, after careful consideration (years ago!) I finally decided that 2049 was the overall best of the 3.
Yeah this is a very popular game and highly regarded by collectors!
Wow, the graphics! This game looks close to psx gran tourism 1. Didn't know there was good looking car racer on n64.
Have you ever heard of "World Driver Championship"? That was kind of the Gran turismo for N64.
And rush 2049 is on Midway Arcade Treasures 3
Damn! I've never been so impressed by a game that so clearly looked and ran better on a different platform! Yet having just been watching San Franscisco Rush 1/2 vids, this is clearly leaps and bounds ahead.
Yeah it’s night and day and when you see this on Dreamcast….
Great review! I love playing this with my wheel and pedal.
I spent an insane amount of time in the stunt tracks and and the race levels to find every single collectible and complete every part of the game. Probably well over a hundred hours.
Probably one of my favorites Rush series after rush 1. But i just could buy it on dreamcast. ^^;
The game himself show a huge variety courses and hidden as well.
The original Blade Runner
Loved this game! All the unlockable content was amazing. I say it's ahead of its time. Make sure you collect those coins.
Rush 2 will always be my favorite. 1 was ok, 2049 was fun too but it might be nostalgia for me but 2 for me is the best.
I loved this game when I was a child, and I keep doing it.
to me, Rush series is the best racing game for N64.
Eu adorava esse jogo marcou muito minha adolescência
Enjoyed these reviews! Guessing the next one isn’t going to be a racing game haha! Thanks.
It won't be no.... It's a movie themed game :-)
I wish there was a way to get the n64 soundtrack on the dreamcast version...
Soonjai I was wondering about the wings also... don't think I saw them even once in the vid.
Since the Bush era games went away from their successors. Bush seemed to killed off gaming and morphed them into FPS crap.
Can you review Shadowgate64 for n64 ? Thanks
I love 2049 so much I want the rights to it. How else would we get a remaster and a sequel, both with online?
There wasn't gonna be anymore sequels to the San Francisco Rush series. The San Francisco Rush 2049 game was the final Rush within the series.
Still my favorite racing game to date no other racing game really tops it
But real talk, I wish they’d remaster this
I wanna ask you a simple question..will u be able to tell?
In the battle mode..in stages like Plaza, how to fire bullet through walls?
I mean how do they peirce bullets?
Thanks duh
This game was amazing :3 The new Rocket Race game in Fortnite has the same vibes. It's crazy how much of the skill from this game, translates to Rocket Race.
Interesting, not a Fortnite player myself so would never have known
@@n64glennplant That's more than fair :) Obviously the controls are nearly completely different, but the overall strats and timing is very close. Whoever made the new game must have grown up with this gem too! I love that we're old enough and skilled enough to bring back the best type of loops.
Rush 2049 is def the best futuristic racer on the Nintendo 64 besides F-Zero X, Wipeout 64, Hydro Thunder and i think the N64 version is on par with the Dreamcast version, the game has great graphics, soundtrack, smooth gameplay and offers great variety of customization.
I own this one. I was sad that the damage system on the cars wasnt back....
I've been praying for a refresh but I don't think that's ever going to happen
I think Rush 2 is the best. But 2049 is worth the revisit. The wings make the game hit different.
i played the crap out of this game as a kid from 2001 to 2006 funny part was i didnt even know about the expansion pack till later which added even more to the fun. it took forever to get all the coins in the stunt stages. hated that part... i used to try and find way to get out of bounds or glitches. the game is over all pretty clean of those but all the secrets they hid were fun to find. the best one being the hidden stunt/test course in track 2. also i like to time myself with the jets that would fly by on track 3 to see how far they throw me lol. good times!
Looks like the Rush game to get this one. I really liked the first one, but never had it myself, a friend had it and it was a pretty good game.
Is it just me or is there no cosmetic damage from collisions anymore??
Both Rush 2 and Rush 2049 were leagues better than SF Rush, but they both have pros and cons over the other.
Rush 2...
- More cars.
- More racing levels.
- Cheats are easy to utilize, as it is a chore to use them in 2049.
- 2 player death circuit.
Rush 2049...
- Better graphics
- 4 stunt tracks
- An 8 track battle mode that matches both Mario Kart and Goldeneye.
- Coins are much harder to get than the keys in Rush 2, so game play lasts much longer.
great review. awesome game! my fav rush game for sure
Yup me 2, I miss it
These games deserve ports to at least one modern gaming system!
this I remember on the DC! didn't know it had an n64 release!
