Just got this game today bc of ur review reminding me of the stunt tracks and just pure awesomeness of this game from when I first played it back in the late 90's. I am a N64 fan to the death and it will always be my favorite console as I just got another one weeks ago now collecting all my fav games. Ur reviews are great and spot on, not too long either. It all feels right and cool again now in my 30's, Thanks for the support of this one of a kind console and it games
Couldnt agree with you more, I absolutely appreciate the n64 not just for the memories as a child, as in high shool.....college dorm days.... but also now that Im setting up a collection for the kids....when they earn good grades, etc. we go online do the research and add a new game to their collection...truth they love it more than the new consoles....64 had a good mix of everything.
yess! my most notalgic game and most memories on that stunt track split screen with friends . im also now in my 30 grew up playing the n64 religously with friends !! best console !
going to be completely honest I use to play this game at least 4 to 5 hours a day, I ended up getting all keys and mountain dew can, got the rocket car, pipe track and midway track. I played this game so much, then one day my memory card got everything erased off (not sure how) I lost everything on that memory card my rush save, Rampage 2 Universal tour save and I don't remember what else by that was one of the saddest days ever all that time I put into this game was for nothing I still play this game at least once or twice a month just have a feeling I will never get everything unlocked again unless I cheat which I do not plan on doing
Jeremy Christiansen i feel you only i had a day of glory because my n64 couldnt save any of my games i played so i had to really stick to the game with my brother at my side we got the mountain dew racing track and the keys in one day and had almost all the vehicles i can think of... then once the day was over we had to turn it off after collecting all that it was sad but a very enjoyable moment
Eightbog - this comment is old as hell but the same thing happened to me. Me and one of my high school buddies clocked in so much time to this game. We had every car unlocked for every map (main maps because we only really played circuits) one day my memory card got corrupted and we lost all of it.
I love these games. I spent countless hours exploring in the first game, and then countless hours on the stunt track in this game. It's interesting knowing that the reviews were highly demanded on this channel, it sounds like a good niche market. I wish they would make an updated version, keeping that same spirit intact. I haven't seen anything like these games since.
I can't prove it, but I believe a lot of the tracks were dumbed down in the sequel as Rush 2 in arcades was one of the first ever (well only) arcade machines that would let you play online against other arcades, so wanted to keep the latency down by making the tracks more simple. I could be wrong.
Marco Wolken No worries, it was pretty simple, Rush was created around the time all arcade machines started to use PC parts, so making it an online game would be pretty simple. It's more of a case of an arcade willing to pay for a broadband line in the late '90s. pretty pricey for just one game.
***** Rush 2 was exclusively released for the N64. Because of this, all of the tracks (except Alcatraz, which is indeed a graphically inferior version to its 'kind of' arcade counterpart - SF Rush The Rock Alcatraz Edition) are uniquely designed for the console and cannot be found on any other version of the Rush series. I think that a specific arcade version of Rush 2049 was the first one to feature an online game mode.
Idk why but I LOVED looking for the keys and cans. Sooooo much time spent searching and collecting. I loved that concept of finding hidden keys in a racing game.
I grew up playing this game with my uncle and brother at my grandmas house, straight up for 2 decades everytime at grandmas house it was rush 2 and ocarina of time, i've played so many uncountable hours in those two games, this soundtrack is a massive chunk of my life
The improvements and additions of Rush 2 easily overshadow the lessened emphasis on exploration (even though this aspect was still strong). What truly sets it apart, though, is the stunt mode. Literal hours were spent during my youth playing this mode. Easily one of favorite (and most played) games for the system.
Fun fact: The game's music was by Barry Leitch, who is also known for another racing soundtrack, Top Gear for the SNES, as well as the remix version of the game, Horizon Chase.
My friends and i spent HOURS on the stunt track. It was so cool to be able flip your car 300 times and stick the landing lol. We'd also try to take two jumps at the same time and collide mid air.
Watching your review, I realized I don't know if I ever played SFR on the console, only in the arcade. I was surprised to hear that there were so many secret routes and such in the original. I had always just assumed that SFR had one or two jumps and secret shortcuts--which people loved--and R2 specifically focused *more* on that aspect than SFR did. Since I only played SFR in the arcade, I never actually got to spend much time exploring it and I didn't realize how backwards I had things this whole time! Also, my best friend and I loved to play 2-player death mode, get in a couple of jet black mobsters, and tear around the Las Vegas track smashing into the other cars and making them explode permanently until we were the only two left of the track--and then, of course...final elimination. I always imagined that somehow our hobby is what inspired Burnout 3: Takedown.
This was by far my favorite of the trilogy and thats including the fact I had 2049 on the DC. Something was just right with this game perhaps it was that it was released at just the right time in the n64 lifespan. I spent countless countless hours in the stunt mode and I do remember doing some insane stunts which sometime I would even record on VHS. Haha. Those tapes are long gone but my memories will always be there
Oh The Stunt mode!! I spent hours playing that with my friends at a youth center back in the day. Thanks Glenn!! I have to pick these games up again!!!
The opponent explosion at 3:53 only renders over terrain, and not the skybox. This proves the footage from this video is on an emulator. N64 did not have this issue.
I finally found this gem that I've been trying to explain to friends! As soon as I seen the track selection screen and the stunt track I knew! I don't know how many hours I killed on that damn stunt track. Graphics, gameplay, and vehicle selection really set this apart from other races in my opinion. I've never been much a of a racer fan but this game holds a dear spot in my heart.
I played this game pretty much only for the stunt track. The first time I saw this game I was in highschool and was skipping to get stoned with some friends. The stunt track blew us away... We spent several hours at a time to just have stunt sessions on that space age- tron like track. This game, for that track only, holds a near and dear place in my heart from my teenage years.
And the popcorn popping sound in multiple tracks? And what about the sound effect in Vegas? Idk what it was but I always thought it sounded like a bowling ball being thrown down the lane.
I liked the 1st Rush the best but the stunt track on 2 was very popular with friends. Rush 2 is a great extension through and through. 2049 is also excellent. Its the last true Rush game imo since LA Rush changed the engine and turned it into a NFS clone.
I think the thing I like most about the game is the actual racing and while it is an arcade racer it does take a good amount of skill to finish 1st and even then, you can be first, take a jump the wrong angle and finish last. I love that aspect, it's slightly unpredictable but not enough that it gets annoying. Despite it being almost twenty years old now, I still love the game and frequently play it when im bored
San Francisco: Rush to be sure. I recall renting Rush 2, and although I did enjoy it at the time and got my rental time out of it, I never felt it warranted a full purchase especially since games were considerably more expensive back then. SF: Rush never gave me any regrets, l always loved playing it.
That was the office of Atari Games's(this and the original game's developer as they also did the Coin-op game) parent company Midway. I thought for all that time Atari was working this installment, they should've also made their own track based on their own office in CA too(at the time they were in business).
Rush 2 was the first one I played and I loved it. Everything was amazing! Looking at it now though, I never realized the cars were real cars like the E.G. Hatch, Supra, Dodge Viper and all that!
The only reason I remember this game is because of that stunt course.. I was somewhere between 6&8 playing this game and have a picture of me sitting on the ground playing on my Panasonic bubble tv.. ahhh, the good ol days.
You made my day, and i subscribe to your channel because l really like the n64. And Rush2 extreme racing USA is such an underated game. sorry for bad english
I LOVED the stunt track in this game. I would okay for hours trying to get the most number of spins and flips possible, as well as giving my friends and I do many great laughs. I have so many great N64 memories from this game. Only games that could top it for me were Mario 64, Mario Kart, Perfect Dark as well ad Goldeneye Multiplayer, and Turok 2.
Suddenly I drool over n64 again. This was the game. And it's an exclusive. I'm going to have to pick one up again. Atm I'm enjoying Rush the Rock and 2049 for Xbox.
Thinking back, I never played that many Midway arcade games when compared with the number they developed and/or published. Midway really was an excellent developer and even Atari, for all their mismanagement as a console developer, had some good talent in the software department. It's a real shame both these companies aren't around anymore, but I guess arcade games and their developers were just doomed to die slowly but surely here in the West.
I spent Hours playing the stunt mode with my older brother back in the day. I wish more car games would add this feature. I spent more time on it trying to see how many flips I could do then I did actually racing. A game like this with achievements would be great. For me Rush 2 is the superior game.
I feel like Rush 2 had more to hold my attention personally. I liked Seattle, both New York tracks, Pipe, Crash & Alcatraz in this one a lot, where as I think Track 6 in SF Rush takes the entire cake for best level in the series. I also liked track 4 (I think it was 4) in SF rush for the rolling hills at the end that caused chaos. I honestly found more secrets and shortcuts dealing with Rush 2, but that may just be me.
I honestly thought the soundtrack in the original was alright. Hard for me to compare the two, I was just too much of a fan of the game series to judge which was the better one.
Since I owned a copy of San Francisco Rush back in the day that one wins out to me, but it's probably for nostalgia reasons more then anything. I wanted Rush 2 really bad as a kid and I would leave the Nintendo Power mag. I had with the article of Rush 2 open and laying in places I knew my parents would look, sadly this tactic did not produce results lol. Another great review Glenn, thank you.
As much as I do enjoy both of these games in my opinion u haven't covered the best one yet because I loved San Fransisco rush 2049 the shortcuts where everywhere and numerous and the wings made pulling off stunts so much more fun
N64 racers all have similar features that set them so very much apart from racing games on the other consoles. I think it's you either love them or hate them and there's hardly anything in between. For a lot of folks these games have nostalgia attached to them. For others it may be more difficult to get into. Personally I think these games are fun and well executed on the system.
Didnt playthe first one very much but we always had this one. Absolutely love it! I own all 3 on the 64 now and this one is still definitely my favorite. Soundtrack was excellent. Didnt think the soundtrack in SFR was all bad though
In the late 90s I owned very few N64 games, and SF Rush was a frequent rental. But RUSH 2 was one I just had to own. I think the original went just a bit too overboard on the color of the cars so Rush 2 was more my taste. Even the environments seemed to have a better pallet. I loved the exploratory nature of the series, but I never noticed a lack of secret routes in the sequel. And although the soundtrack was very different between the two games, I enjoyed them both. Rush 2 was my personal favorite of the arcade racers.
both awesome games, Wish they would make a new one of this quality. Rush 2 had more to unlock, some of the things were difficult to unlock, it was fun.
I remember being at my friends house playing this game as a kid, he only had one controller and i forgot to bring mine we would spend house just playing the stunt track and would switch turns after one of us died (blew up) 2 times. The music in this game was fantastic! The intro and Amiga-ish were great tracks. But the chorus melody in Tinkletoon was my fucking jam!!!! I downloaded mp3s of the soundtrack years ago and still jam out to it everynow and then
Refined controls and physics, better music, and, in my opinion, more diverse and memorable tracks with sufficient potential for exploration make Rush 2 the superior game. The tracks might feel dumbed down at first, but collecting all of the keys and Mountain Dew cans will allow you to get full enjoyment out of each track without it getting stale or frustrating like Rush 2049 and it's not overly punishing during races like in Rush 1. Plus, there are way more tracks and cars in this game for some reason. It's just more polished and packed with worthwhile content.
I was cleaning my room and i found the game there, so i decide to see some gameplay miss the old days:') sucks that my 64 dont work anymore:( Thanks for the vid kind sir
SF Rush was a game my father and I played all the time and I would collected keys for that hotrod car and Mountain Dew (yes theres Mt Dew but no Doritos) for the line racer I think that's what's it called.
I think this one was waaay more REplayable than the first. Will you do the 2049rush next? Or maybe SOUTHPARK RALLY? I know its a hard game but ya can't put it off forever.
You should do a review over extreme g 2. Like how rush 2 improved and fixed the flaws of San Francisco rush, I feel that extreme g 2 does the same for extreme g.
It's hard to answer. Rush 1 had more exploration that made endless hours at home enjoyable, but feels pretty flimsy with the n64 controller. Rush 2 fixes those home controls and adds features in return for some lost replay value, though the arcade wheel for Rush 2 didn't feel as fun as Rush 1 in the arcades.. On the whole I'd say Rush 2 is the better 64 title, and Rush 1 was better in the arcade. but then I remember I rented Rush 1 like 8 times and Rush 2 once or twice.
when i was kid , i thought this was rush 1 .... and rush 2049 san fransico was 2..... i had so much fun getting all the coins in stunts and in racing with my brother.... just got the game again...noticed that there were cheat codes..... finally going to try the panther car before i die.
Wow this game looks better than the first one. Sadly i don't have it yet but I will be sure to get it soon. With the damage and smoking of the cars it reminds me if destruction derby 64 which is another favorite of mine.
Both Rush 2 and Rush 2049 were leagues better than SF Rush, but they both have pros and cons over the other. Rush 2... - More cars. - More racing levels. - Cheats are easy to utilize, as it is a chore to use them in 2049. - 2 player death circuit. Rush 2049... - Better graphics - 4 stunt tracks - An 8 track battle mode that matches both Mario Kart and Goldeneye. - Coins are much harder to get than the keys in Rush 2, so game play lasts much longer.
Great game, and more polished than the first one, but it just wasn't as memorable as the original. The more open tracks, exploration and sense of freedom in Rush 1 is something that, for me, is what the N64-era was all about. The stunt track they added in Rush 2 was awesome though.
I remember listening to the music in Rush 2 (the LA music in particular) and thinking . . .YES! After seeing how some of the tracks got simplified I was slightly put back but never put off. I can confidently say that Rush 2 is the superior game, technically and enjoyably. I can pick up Rush 2, any time, almost no readjustment curve and kick ass, but I can also have MY ass handed to me on a platter. I found SF Rush takes a bit of getting used to when picking it up after long while and I find it turns a lot of new players off whereas Rush 2 can be played by everyone. Even mum finds a way to enjoy it and she never plays video games, HAHAHA! Give me the Concept or the Mtn Dew Car (spoiler alert) and get out of my way!
The stunt mode and music in this game were the shit. I still hum the menu music on occasion.
hey no shit me too! it's like out of the hours and hours and days of playing the game the sound track has been burned into my skull. and I'm 27 now
3 years later. Do u still hum the menu music?
Jay I do lol
@@JaySaysHey yep
@@YuushaBlues now 5 years later goddamn
If I had to pick one as the better of the two, I'd say this one. I played the hell out of this in order to get all the keys and Dew cans.

There's also a full-pipe track too.
I had 89 stars in Mario 64 when I was like 8. Let my neighbor use N64 for 2 days and my save was gone was I got it back
Eightbog - this comment is old as hell but the same thing happened to me. Me and one of my high school buddies clocked in so much time to this game. We had every car unlocked for every map (main maps because we only really played circuits) one day my memory card got corrupted and we lost all of it.
I remember when this game came out, it was the most beautiful graphics I've ever seen lol
I spent most of my time on that stunt course.
my most nostalgic game especially fhe stunt map with friends split screen
I was just about to comment the same thing lol
But at the end of the day.... "WHATS YOUR NAME?! O O O O O O O"
nothing nasty now
I love these games. I spent countless hours exploring in the first game, and then countless hours on the stunt track in this game.
I downloaded mp3s of the soundtrack years ago and still jam out to it everynow and then
02:54 there's a key under that bridge. Took me hours to find it when I was a kid
cracking review Glenn, not one I can comment one but still looks a great time!
My favourite racing game on the n64. I fuckin love it haha. My brother and i still often race through and try to unlock everything... 20 yrs later :)
It's just more polished and packed with worthwhile content.
love the game especially the stunt track
I was cleaning my room and i found the game there, so i decide to see some gameplay miss the old days:') sucks that my 64 dont work anymore:(
Thanks for the vid kind sir
SF Rush was a game my father and I played all the time and I would collected keys for that hotrod car and Mountain Dew (yes theres Mt Dew but no Doritos) for the line racer I think that's what's it called.
I think this one was waaay more REplayable than the first. Will you do the 2049rush next? Or maybe SOUTHPARK RALLY? I know its a hard game but ya can't put it off forever.
You should do a review over extreme g 2. Like how rush 2 improved and fixed the flaws of San Francisco rush, I feel that extreme g 2 does the same for extreme g.
That game was waaaay ahead of its time
It had some cool cheat codes too.
Nice review man.
Thanks fella 👍
If I didn’t know any better I’d think these cars were liscensed
tinkletoon is my jam
I want the Dreamcast versions of these games. They feel just like the arcade.
I'd love to play this game again someday
I had both.. and loved them equally..
I liked the idea of tracks around the USA in rush 2 but I think I liked the idea of a more open races in rush1 so for me I think rush 1 was better
when i was kid , i thought this was rush 1 .... and rush 2049 san fransico was 2..... i had so much fun getting all the coins in stunts and in racing with my brother....
just got the game again...noticed that there were cheat codes..... finally going to try the panther car before i die.
Don't know if I ever played this, might check it out on my everdrive 64 to see if I should purchase it.
looking good upload, I played this game for long time ago, awesome game.
this game is my all time favorite racing game
Wow this game looks better than the first one. Sadly i don't have it yet but I will be sure to get it soon. With the damage and smoking of the cars it reminds me if destruction derby 64 which is another favorite of mine.
Both Rush 2 and Rush 2049 were leagues better than SF Rush, but they both have pros and cons over the other.
Rush 2...
- More cars.
- More racing levels.
- Cheats are easy to utilize, as it is a chore to use them in 2049.
- 2 player death circuit.
Rush 2049...
- Better graphics
- 4 stunt tracks
- An 8 track battle mode that matches both Mario Kart and Goldeneye.
- Coins are much harder to get than the keys in Rush 2, so game play lasts much longer.
I use to play it alot.
Great game 👍
Rush 2 is so next level. And the stunt track is enough to get lost in for hours!!!!!!!!!!
Great game, and more polished than the first one, but it just wasn't as memorable as the original. The more open tracks, exploration and sense of freedom in Rush 1 is something that, for me, is what the N64-era was all about. The stunt track they added in Rush 2 was awesome though.
Nice game. Loved sf rush as kid. Ever wanted to play thia one. I am currious.
Give me the Concept or the Mtn Dew Car (spoiler alert) and get out of my way!
loved this game. dam nostalgia.
i remember renting this game and i enjoyed it
Rush 2 Extreme racing was the best of the three.
RUSH 2 Extreme Racing is a helluva much more better that San Francisco Rush.
They’re both fun parts of the trilogy 😄
This is one of my top 5 racing games of all time. I put way too many hours on the stunt course
