hi, at 3:47 For SF Rush, there actually is a way to tell the speed/handling of the cars. If you look at the arcade version when choosing cars it explains the speed vs handling at the bottom(speed/handling).basically from what ive experienced. beginner slowest, but adjusts in air(good handling)Extreme quickest but car wont adjust in air and can spinout. Also for the most in depth the n64 game guide(official one) has the speeds and all that of the cars.
That's really good to know! I didn't consider looking at the arcade version, and the manual that came with the game itself didn't have the stats or anything. I had no idea there was an official guide!

As someone who's been a RUSH-aholic for over 14 years since the original, it's so nice to see the love of this series still out there. I've gone as far as getting every console version and getting my own Rush The Rock cabinet and 2049 special edition cabinet. Personally know the world record holder of Rush The Rock and trying to set records on 2049 special edition. As of now I need to get some repairs going on both cabinets but once I'm back up and running I should be back on Twitch!
With all of the reboots and remasters we’ve had over the last ten years, this is the one franchise I want back. Rush 2 is probably one of my favorite games of all time. Collecting the keys and Mountain Dew cans provided replayability. Surprisingly, it’s also one of the N64 games that emulates really well. It runs perfectly on my PiBoy DMG.
Since childhood some of my most favorite driving/racing games are and had been: Pole Position II(Atari 7800 and Arcade) Hang On(SEGA MasterSystem) Cruis'N World(Arcade) But once late 1996 came when I was in high school with Atari's S.F. Rush in my mall's arcade at the time, that's when I fell in love with driving games again on a permanent basis...all thanks to Atari Games Corporation which in my analysis and opinion had to do SOMETHING(along with releasing their other titles such as Area 51, Primal Rage, MACE The Dark Age, and later on Gauntlet Legends...the latter 2 which Atari Games also did for the N64, in which Midway published and released for the console) to make a desperately needed comeback or face a much, MUCH earlier extinction from the coin-op scene. I wish that Warner would do the right thing and make a Nintendo Switch version of the original coin-op, the Alcatraz edition one or Rush 2. Think about it, with the switch's GPU and modern graphics technology(even though the system's now a bit long in the tooth compared to PS5 and XBOX One X), and the game's car physics and gravity from the N64 version or even Rush 2 from the same console, I think Warner could pull it off tremendously well...especially if they end up lucky enough to bring at least some of the guys who worked on the N64 and/or the Coin-op game in for the Switch version.
As one of the only Rush and Rush 2 speed runners (SilverSneakers), I really appreciate this content. I think more people will get into the series if they try it out. First, on a generally note on controls, I love them. While the controller stick is approachable in Rush 1 and fantastic in Rush 2 and 2049, all the games have this quality of easy to learn/hard to master. Most racers start out Tap-turning, where light to medium curves are executed by repeatedly tapping the stick. Push turns, by contrast, are done by tilting the stick on a precise angle to match the corner. Slight variations of the stick angle can make a big difference in holding speed, and make a high skill ceiling for those who want to push their abilities. Other more situational advance techniques include holding the gas and the brake simultaneously to increase grip, or holding gas and/or handbrake for cornering. These tricks handle differently depending on vehicle. One of my criticisms of Rush handling is how it handles take offs (going airborne) and landings. The angle you hold the stick in either situation can have a drastic affect on how you will land. Let’s say you go airborne on a left corner. If you hold the stick at the same, precise angle as you go airborne, you will continue at the same angle. BUT, if you had finished turning and let go of the stick a few frames before going airborne, your car will start to rotate. Depending on your car and it’s settings, it may continue this left to right rotation midair despite you intending to make a leftward corner. While this is great for giving the game a higher skill ceiling, it is rough for new players who don’t know why their car is suddenly tilting the opposite direction they intended. And in games like Rush 1 with the extreme car, you could make a full 360 rotation from this kind of error if it was egregious enough. It’s highly car dependent but it will catch players off guard. Landings aren’t as bad, but if you’re holding all the way left when you land that jump, you will do a long drift, whereas waiting until a split second after landing to turn will grip the corner much more. And with as much speed loss as the series gives to drifting, this isn’t typically good to have such a drastic difference owed to what could be a fraction of a second timing input. So there are pros and cons to the Rush Series’ handling style, many of which raise the skill ceiling but seem unintuitive until very experienced at the game. San Francisco Rush really is jank, between stiff steering and uneven textures, sometimes your car will just lose traction like you’re driving on ice. The disconnect from having super-grippy tight tires, to suddenly careening into a wall because of a tiny lip or unrounded polygon hill, suddenly it’s like you’re on ice. There are advanced techniques to handle these situations, but a casual play through will not have these tricks. It acts as a knowledge checkpoint if you will - one must fully understand the jank to truly master the game. And the main way if to die in practically every way imaginable until finding something that works. For people who don’t really care for this type of optimizing/exploration, it will be off-putting to most players. It still has a charm to it though, for me, that is hard to put a finger on that 2049 doesn’t have. Lastly, the best handling car in the game is the hardest to achieve in the game - the Hot Rod. Once completing a task most players won’t complete, you find a vehicle that is serviceable on all tracks and greatly reduces the jank physics encountered. It’s a shame really. Rush 2 is one of the most stable racing games I’ve had the pleasure of playing. Maybe it just hasn’t been glitch-hunted as much as other games, but it is incredibly solid. Rush 1 has several checkpoint abuse glitches or autoabort time saves, but Rush 2 much more thoroughly tested their textures and designed it so that even if you went out of bounds, it wouldn’t help you. The tracks have multiple paths that are mostly appropriate levels of difficulty compared to the regular track. The circuit mode doesn’t have a glitch letting you replay the same track over and over, and the console doesn’t give some sort of overflow for leaving it on for hours like Rush 1’s speed glitch. Rush 2 has always been near and dear to me as the solid rock, the foundation of the series. My only issue with the circuit is the addition of the mirrored tracks, which is an issue in all the top circuits in the series. It would’ve been half as many races to exclude mirror and a lot more enjoyable for everyone. 2049 just isn’t my thing, but I still play occasionally. Overall thanks for doing this video and bringing more attention to my favorite series out there. Hit me up if you ever have any questions about Rush 1 or 2 on the N64 releases.

Most fun I ever had was racing on Track 6 in reverse with maximum wind and deaths enabled. Pretty much every AI racer will die on the first lap and it becomes a survival race!
I actually loved Rush 2. It was one of my first N64 games & I had so many good memories with that game. I wanted to see a retrospective of the Rush series for so long so thank you!!
I always had the high scores and the arcade had a "Ghost" car of yourself that you could race to beat your own time which was a unique feature at the time and unlocking old Hemicudas as the fastest cars was killer! One other guy would occasionally manage to get one of my 2nd, 3rd place winning times only to witness me re-win them the next visit. On top of all the cool shortcuts, there are a few crash point techniques that can advance you at certain points instead of slowing you down. That was the secret to beating it.
We always turned "deaths" on in the options menu and tried eliminating all the opponents by ramming them into the sides! That was the best part! We played that on circuit mode. And when we died ourselves we would quickly hit restart and give the controller to the next player. Completing many circuits that way. What a great time!
I did the same thing! But then try to finish first in a circuit without ever finishing a race. If you somehow manage to destroy all of your opponents in a race, you sacrifice yourself before the end.
Rush 2049 was so goated lmao, I think a remake of it would be so awesome. However, the console was pretty underwhelming as compared to its cabinet counterpart. I remember playing the arcade version all the time, and the console version was just not the same.
I LOVE THIS SERIES! Grew up with 1 and 2 on an emulator and I still love 'em to this day. Honestly, all of the issues you mention, I actually find them as qualities. I really dig the stiff handling and the difficult tracks a whole lot, and I'm not particularly good at them either, but I think once you understand that the way of the game is meant to be played, taking turns with ease, letting of of the accelerator to take turns, and understanding where your car might fly off the ground, it's just flows and it's so much fun. For me, it's an incredibly satisfying game every time, where every race I'm constantly focused on doing my best. I really wish there were more games like these three. Great review, dude! I love this series too, and I hope it came across how much I do! The difficult tracks were a ton of fun, especially in the first one. I find it so interesting how difficult it was to know where to go in that track with the straightaway with the loops on either end. That was hilarious and I was laughing the whole time!
i understand the criticisms of rush 2049, but i think the battle mode pushes it over the top and its unfortunate you didnt get to experience it, its super fucking fun
Yeah unfortunately due to everything going on, I don't get much of a chance to play multiplayer games with friends. I hope I get a chance to play battle mode soon, especially because it's a mode unique to 2049.
Honestly I played San Francisco rush incessantly as a kid after it released. To the point that I was able to beat/win the circuit mode on every difficulty. And I had a blast searching for keys, and trying to get to the hidden stunt track area of track 6. I absolutely adored this game.
2049 is definitely the best version! If you find out all the great shortcuts and how to combine them. Those shortcuts are sometimes very hard to accomplish and yet very genius in the layout.

I have some feedback here for your consideration, if you like! 2:00 - The Rock is accessible even without a game shark, but you have to win at least one circuit and input a secret code! I agree, the physics in Rush 1 are really kinda terrible. I don't play the original much nowadays because it seems like I always crash because the physics forgot how a car is supposed to work rather than a mistake I made while driving. It's basically 1-1 with the arcade version though, so I guess I can't complain about the N64 version in this regard. 8:22 - You can drive either way around the loops on Sunset (track 6)! This track has no requirements except that you pass the checkpoint at the far end of each loop, you can even drive to the checkpoint and 180 back the other way if you want! The game doesn't do a good job of conveying this info, though. 13:02 - SF Rush the Rock is an enhanced edition of Rush 1. It includes all of SF Rush N64's tracks. Rush 2 does not have an arcade counterpart of any kind, unfortunately.
At 8:34 you can see the secret hidden stunt area for like a second. I don't think you mentioned it. Also I think the first game has Alcatraz as a secret track. Anyways great review!! I love these games. Rush the rock emulates perfectly in MAME now and can be overclocked to be 60fps. I also want to try emulating the arcade version of 2049. Idk if the dreamcast version's graphics are arcade perfect?

I honestly appreciate this so much, Rush was a staple for me for years on end. it just happened to be what I ended up giving the most of my attention too. I loved this video and to be perfectly honest this was a really great watch, I dream of a full remaster of the trilogy. but I doubt I'll ever let go of my N64 just purely because of how much of my time it has stolen! haha oh so worth it!

There is a way you can play this game in manual where you shift down or up right when you hit the ground and it straightens the car right up with good acceleration.
4:47 you could actually mitigate the stiffness of the hadnling of the cars by changing the steering type on the options so it resembles an actual wheel instead of the stick it always shows. The cars become more responsive thx to that little change (at least for me it was like that)

I found that in the first SF Rush I had to tap the break fast (like antilock brakes) in order to keep control while stopping and turning. This strategy helped me out when playing that game.
I would love for this series to make a return where it's not just San Fransisco or USA but rather world wide. Just not in the hands of but corporate studios that would only ruined the source material. While also adding some sprints and rally races similar to the ones on the crusin series with elements of the NFS The Run.
Rush one of my favorite racing series. The soundtrack composer for Rush 2 and SF Rush 2049 Barry Leitch is a friend he made so much memorable music for Rush. Nice video !
That's pretty cool honestly man. 2049 had a killer soundtrack. Can you ask him for me why the battle themes in 2049 only last 30 seconds? Lol They were so epic sounding, I was like "wow this is an awesome tune..wait... what ...ah shit it just stopped " when I first played the game on 64.
SF Rush is still awesome, from the keys to the secret shortcuts, it has tons of replay value and it's great for some split screen racing, albeit a little squashed. Probably has the best high score name entry music of any game ever. Nothing nasty now, wh wh wh wh wh wh what's your name lol
3:47 I cant believe you didnt crash before the finish line. That clip brought back all the hype memories. And the bus stage was so fun I wish I had Rush 2 man, I just highly doubt it has memorable and unique soundtracks as SF Rush did. Gameplay wise it looks like a perfect extension of SF Rush
Rush: The Rock - Alcatraz Ed. was EVERYWHERE in my area. One of the definitive 90s arcade games for me. Rush 2 passed me by entirely, but 2049 was so hyped in Nintendo Power and magazines (though I actually had it on Dreamcast 🤔)
You didn't get to play multiplayer again?!?! I grew up playing SF Rush 2049 on the Dreamcast and boy was it a fucking riot playing stunt and battle mode. We mostly played on the demo that had both of those modes unlocked. And yes SF Rush (the first one) was BRUTAL! When is the California Speed review? :O Do you live in California? Because if you live in socal then I gotta help fix your lack of mutliplayer experience with some of these games. Like I'd recommend you do a video on Snowboard Kids 1 & 2, but you NEED to have played multiplayer. Same goes with Goemon's Great Adventure! Penny Racers was also a great game, don't sleep on it!
Rush 2 was always and still is my favorite. Almost everything you said about SF Rush I agree with. I think at one point as a kid I played it so much I was able to figure out the controls and not explode. God knows how long that took though. I can say I either never knew there was a PS1 game or I must have forgotten, it reminds me more of Cruisin. 2049 always felt like a straight return to Rush 1. Wild controls, felt like I could never be in control just really weird. I think the visuals and concept of the future were beautiful and awesome, but it’s just odd. I wanted different cars than we got. I thought it was amusing they added Slim Jim advertisements but the Mtn Dew was the best, with the actual cans. I always wished they had put them on Wii/WiiU VC but long after I realized it was probably due to the Dew licensing expiring, and of course Midway dying/being bought. But things from the license have trickled out since then and maybe someday there’s some hope minus the Dew.
Very nice review. For me, SF Rush is my prefered version. I don't know why, rationnaly speaking. The graphics and colors are more brightful. The sound effects are quite unique. The physic is tricky as hell. Rush 2 is definitely more "tight" on every aspects but my feeling is that the graphics are dark or proportionally weird. It is a very solid game but I can't wrap my head around it even today. Rush 2049, I just recently began playing it. I didn't play it back then because I didn't like the futuristic theme and the vibe of its cover... even though I always loved futuristic racing games like F-zero and Wipeout. I'm mainly being crushed by the difficulty and punished miserably every single time I try a new shortcut. This frustrates me as I feel the game is teaching me NOT to deviate from the main track but at the same time it entails me with all those shortcuts. I suppose I should continue to play it. Maybe I'm still too new to the game.
I had rush 2 as a kid and absolutely loved it. Played it to death. With friends and by myself. Maybe that’s why I love racing games and Mountain Dew these days. I never had 2049 because I was a kid with no money but drooled over wanting it. And I’ve still never played it.
I played the arcade version of Rush 2049 at a church camp back in 2009 and spent most of the time in the game trying to unlock the black paint job for the Cuda. It's my only experience with the series, but I had way too much fun.
Glad to know the Rush series after I spot one of a REAL WORKING CABINET (Rush 2049) that I played recently and I though why this game have not been ported to consoles yet... Only to figure it it was ported to consoles! And the PC port as well but that was a very limited print and exclusive to a Quantum3D Raven... Thanks LGR! Anyways this was a fantastic review of classic games like these and I wish more wacky games can come about, but most of the time there is a lack of em recently. I totally get the whole thing about ads especially back then it was like oh wow this brand cares enough to wanna be in this game I like as opposed to now where it’s like everyone’s trying to sell you something
After a while, I mastered death mode. Death mode works both ways, if an AI car blows up, it's out of the race. I would systematically remove the AI cars by ramming them from the rear, from the side, it all depended on where they were and what was coming, very situational and you had to be able to improvise on the fly and the pure dopamine RUSH you got from watching a car explode form your exploits, was exhilarating. Having 2 players made this even easier, as one person could focus on racing and the other eliminating AI cars. This was a really good way to unlock the cars and tracks. The first 2 rush games are in my top 5 for N64 titles, staying up all night to win a circuit with a buddy, getting all the keys and Mountain Dew cans.
My best bud and I STILL PLAY Rush 2's Circuit Mode; with one distinct option turned on... DEATHS ☠️ Typically picking the Taxi and the Mobster, It adds so much to the race. Shunting CPUs to their firey combustion is pure satisfaction. Definitely a tough mode, but we have quite a blast playing it.
10:23 I think you misunderstood the difficulty as you choose the car. Perhaps the N64 is not well explained but in the arcade it's pretty clear that the difficulty there is of the car itself, not the game or the AI or the timer... In the arcade as you select the car, each car will have a meter for speed and one for handling. The beginning car will have huge handling and low speed.. that's why it's easier.. the extreme car will have a huge speed but little handling.. making it much harder to play with.. You can guess the other cars. So the higher the car difficulty, only means it goes faster and handles worse...That's all. Doesn't affect the AI. The in game difficulty settings then is about the AI itself and whatever else. The difficulty based on track is self explanatory.. pretty standard on arcade racing games of the 90s... they all had each track labeled based on how hard the track itself is.
I have to say, rush 2049 is much more playable on the Dreamcast. The resolution is much crisper. Also, while the 90 degree turns do make a resurgence, they're limited to only two of the six tracks, and I think add some lovely variety to them. I personally love the nighttime tracks because cornering and braking is very important.
8:30 I wonder if the person that discovered this stunt area made the same mistake in that corner 25:10 secret to getting through this shortcut is to line up with the middle of the ramp and don't steer when get to the corkscrew, if you left the jump right you won't die
I had OG San Francisco Rush in N64 as a little kid. I always tried to drift (push the one of the yellow buttons or B.....honesty don't remember but it was one of them LOL), tried to avoid getting the wall, it kinda helped honesty but mostly spin most of the time. I never played the Rush 2 and barely played San Francisco rush 2049 in a arcade, and never played LA Rush.
SF Rush N64 was one of the first games I got for the system and it deserves a special place in my gaming heart ❤️ Embarcadero was my favorite track and I always choose the the blue Exotic car. Unfortunately I missed out on Rush 2 during that time 😅 I remember going to the mall every Sunday and I always spend my quarters playing Rush 2049 Arcade Alcatraz (Track 4) is my favorite track of choice, Rocket ZX w/Advanced Settings & No Drones for 59~60fps👆🏻 2049 N64 was one of my favorite games to pickup and play during the end of the N64 era I remember purchasing Midway Arcade Treasures 3 (PS2) at one point thinking that it was the Arcade version 2049 but nah! It was a port of the Dreamcast which was so and so and Alcatraz Edition wasn’t arcade perfect I was in El Salvador I went to some random Arcade at some mall and I stumbled upon the Arcade Edition 2049 but Special Edition and what made it memorable was that it was localized in Spanish 🤯 believe it or not Now in 2023, there is a record store by my area that only has a single Special Edition 2049 with no keypad lol, I always go for the best time on every track, Dreamcast 2049 I believe is the best port compared to the n64 after watching this I just got my copy of Rush 2 in the mail and currently going for 100%
Several things: 1. Great video! 2. PS1 Rush is an abomination. 3. Seeing this reminds how impressed I was with the N64 version but since I've started using MAME and a modded Arcade1Up Star Wars cabinet...it makes it look so much worse than I remembered. I'm actively looking for a Rush The Rock cabinet. That game is tied with Hydro Thunder for my favorite arcade racer. I just picked up a Hydro Thunder and am fixing it up. I hope to do the same with Rush! 4. I hated Rush 2049 at first, I just didn't get the art style and darkness of the game compared to the previous games. Once I was able to add it to said Arcade1Up cabinet through MAME, I'm able to play it as much as I want and I'm starting to love it! That stunt track on Rush 2 ate up hours of my childhood.
Love the RUSH series... I remember renting SF Rush like every other weekend and then begging for Rush 2 when it came out (it was one of only 3 carts we actually owned) and then I played that one to death. 2049 never quite jived with me and I never understood why, so that's for putting it in words. I think the car selection of 2049 is one reason I never quite got into it like I did with Rush 2. Which is a shame because the circuits look stunning, even if they do feel a bit vague.
I listened to this video podcast style. Great content. I love this series so much But how are you not gonna talk about the stunt track on Rush 2?!? That was my go to for years
I grew up playing Rush 2049, when I was younger I didn't know there were 2 entries before it, but 2049 is one of my favorite racing games. When you mentioned that some of the short cuts don't feel like time savers, I've found out that that's true, only a handful actually are, some are very risky to take and some are only meant to hide things like coins, but once figure out which ones are the right ones to take you'll stay in first at all times. I completely agree with the limited visibility too, it's rather hard to see those trolleys at certain points. I know the game got a release later on the PS2/XB/GC on the Midway Arcade Treasures releases but I'm not sure if its the arcade port or a port of the console version, maybe that cut track is there if its the arcade port?
I have 1 & 2 on the N64, and 2049 on the Dreamcast. Great trilogy, would love for an HD trilogy collection. Oh, completely forgot L.A. Rush... i haven't played that one.
I grew up with 2049 on the Dreamcast. It has all the various customization options. Engine, tires etc. Also all of the tracks have names in the DC version. Shame you couldnt experience battle mode, its amazing. One of the best car combat games ever made, I always wished it had bots. Also you left out the Obstacle mode. Which is an awesome bonus you get once you bet a certain number of tracks.
12:59 Rush the Rock is not at all an arcade port of Rush 2, but an arcade port of Rush consoles. The first Rush release on arcades had only 3 tracks. When the N64 version came out with a lot of new tracks and cars, the arcade version got updated with the same new tracks and cars as the console version, plus the full Alcatraz track and was labeled The Rock. Arcade owners could just install an updated rom in the same cabinet. So Rush the Rock is basically the arcade version of San Francisco Rush 1 from the N64 but with arcade graphics.
There is also a _PlayStation 2_ version of _Rush 2049_ in the _Midway Arcade Treasures 3..._ which also includes _San Francisco Rush the Rock: Alcatraz Edition_
there is another game that is a spiritual successor to rush called Nitronic Rush, and its really good, its sequel called distance is awesome too. Edit: added info
Man I loved this series, I grew up with Rush 2. But 2049 was this thing I could never get my hands on, and when my cousin finally let me have his copy, the battle mode... My Gosh.. It's the most fun I've had on an N64 to date, I've probably spent hundreds of hours spanking my brother and cousins on this mode, PLZ find someone to play with. It's AMAZING!!!
I saw a double Rush The Rock: Alcatraz Edition arcades at a karting location and Rush 2049 arcade games in a little bit at various locations with my summer camp in summer time and i have 2049 at my dreamcast and gamecube
Shoutouts to that one version of San Francisco Rush for PCs that for some inane reason was software-locked to one very specific kinda bad graphics card.
Actually I enjoyed the “repetitiveness” of the tracks in the original as it allowed for maximum exploring and exploitation of all the things to see instead of a hurried tour of the whole city in Rush 2 although I love that one for different reasons. Handling in SFR was tricky it’s true, but you could get the hang of it. What frustrates me to this day is the flawless way the drones drive and when they do crash they get put way farther ahead then you do when you crash. You have to drive frustratingly perfect to win in the circuit.
For Rush 2049 There is a PS2 port of the dreamcast version as well in one of the Midway Gems game packs. Its a decent alternative to the N64 version IF you dont own a dreamcast like me.

If you look at the arcade version when choosing cars it explains the speed vs handling at the bottom(speed/handling).basically from what ive experienced. beginner slowest, but adjusts in air(good handling)Extreme quickest but car wont adjust in air and can spinout. Also for the most in depth the n64 game guide(official one) has the speeds and all that of the cars.
That's really good to know! I didn't consider looking at the arcade version, and the manual that came with the game itself didn't have the stats or anything. I had no idea there was an official guide!

I don't understand the dumb idea of remove car statistics from the N64 port, glad that never happened again on the second game.

As someone who's been a RUSH-aholic for over 14 years since the original, it's so nice to see the love of this series still out there.
I've gone as far as getting every console version and getting my own Rush The Rock cabinet and 2049 special edition cabinet. Personally know the world record holder of Rush The Rock and trying to set records on 2049 special edition. As of now I need to get some repairs going on both cabinets but once I'm back up and running I should be back on Twitch!
With all of the reboots and remasters we’ve had over the last ten years, this is the one franchise I want back. Rush 2 is probably one of my favorite games of all time. Collecting the keys and Mountain Dew cans provided replayability. Surprisingly, it’s also one of the N64 games that emulates really well. It runs perfectly on my PiBoy DMG.
Imagine what the arcade version of that sequel would had looked and played like?! 😮🤔
Sadly Midway bankrupt after the disaster of the L.A Rush.

Since childhood some of my most favorite driving/racing games are and had been:
Pole Position II(Atari 7800 and Arcade)
Hang On(SEGA MasterSystem)
Cruis'N World(Arcade)
But once late 1996 came when I was in high school with Atari's S.F. Rush in my mall's arcade at the time, that's when I fell in love with driving games again on a permanent basis...all thanks to Atari Games Corporation which in my analysis and opinion had to do SOMETHING(along with releasing their other titles such as Area 51, Primal Rage, MACE The Dark Age, and later on Gauntlet Legends...the latter 2 which Atari Games also did for the N64, in which Midway published and released for the console) to make a desperately needed comeback or face a much, MUCH earlier extinction from the coin-op scene.
I wish that Warner would do the right thing and make a Nintendo Switch version of the original coin-op, the Alcatraz edition one or Rush 2. Think about it, with the switch's GPU and modern graphics technology(even though the system's now a bit long in the tooth compared to PS5 and XBOX One X), and the game's car physics and gravity from the N64 version or even Rush 2 from the same console, I think Warner could pull it off tremendously well...especially if they end up lucky enough to bring at least some of the guys who worked on the N64 and/or the Coin-op game in for the Switch version.
Battle mode in 2049 was genius. The weapon design is perfectly balanced.

I still play that mode on dreamcast version with multiple friends several times a year. Best multiplayer experience to this day

As one of the only Rush and Rush 2 speed runners (SilverSneakers), I really appreciate this content. I think more people will get into the series if they try it out.
First, on a generally note on controls, I love them. While the controller stick is approachable in Rush 1 and fantastic in Rush 2 and 2049, all the games have this quality of easy to learn/hard to master. Most racers start out Tap-turning, where light to medium curves are executed by repeatedly tapping the stick. Push turns, by contrast, are done by tilting the stick on a precise angle to match the corner. Slight variations of the stick angle can make a big difference in holding speed, and make a high skill ceiling for those who want to push their abilities. Other more situational advance techniques include holding the gas and the brake simultaneously to increase grip, or holding gas and/or handbrake for cornering. These tricks handle differently depending on vehicle.
One of my criticisms of Rush handling is how it handles take offs (going airborne) and landings. The angle you hold the stick in either situation can have a drastic affect on how you will land. Let’s say you go airborne on a left corner. If you hold the stick at the same, precise angle as you go airborne, you will continue at the same angle. BUT, if you had finished turning and let go of the stick a few frames before going airborne, your car will start to rotate. Depending on your car and it’s settings, it may continue this left to right rotation midair despite you intending to make a leftward corner. While this is great for giving the game a higher skill ceiling, it is rough for new players who don’t know why their car is suddenly tilting the opposite direction they intended. And in games like Rush 1 with the extreme car, you could make a full 360 rotation from this kind of error if it was egregious enough. It’s highly car dependent but it will catch players off guard. Landings aren’t as bad, but if you’re holding all the way left when you land that jump, you will do a long drift, whereas waiting until a split second after landing to turn will grip the corner much more. And with as much speed loss as the series gives to drifting, this isn’t typically good to have such a drastic difference owed to what could be a fraction of a second timing input. So there are pros and cons to the Rush Series’ handling style, many of which raise the skill ceiling but seem unintuitive until very experienced at the game.
San Francisco Rush really is jank, between stiff steering and uneven textures, sometimes your car will just lose traction like you’re driving on ice. The disconnect from having super-grippy tight tires, to suddenly careening into a wall because of a tiny lip or unrounded polygon hill, suddenly it’s like you’re on ice. There are advanced techniques to handle these situations, but a casual play through will not have these tricks. It acts as a knowledge checkpoint if you will - one must fully understand the jank to truly master the game. And the main way if to die in practically every way imaginable until finding something that works. For people who don’t really care for this type of optimizing/exploration, it will be off-putting to most players. It still has a charm to it though, for me, that is hard to put a finger on that 2049 doesn’t have. Lastly, the best handling car in the game is the hardest to achieve in the game - the Hot Rod. Once completing a task most players won’t complete, you find a vehicle that is serviceable on all tracks and greatly reduces the jank physics encountered. It’s a shame really.
Rush 2 is one of the most stable racing games I’ve had the pleasure of playing. Maybe it just hasn’t been glitch-hunted as much as other games, but it is incredibly solid. Rush 1 has several checkpoint abuse glitches or autoabort time saves, but Rush 2 much more thoroughly tested their textures and designed it so that even if you went out of bounds, it wouldn’t help you. The tracks have multiple paths that are mostly appropriate levels of difficulty compared to the regular track. The circuit mode doesn’t have a glitch letting you replay the same track over and over, and the console doesn’t give some sort of overflow for leaving it on for hours like Rush 1’s speed glitch. Rush 2 has always been near and dear to me as the solid rock, the foundation of the series. My only issue with the circuit is the addition of the mirrored tracks, which is an issue in all the top circuits in the series. It would’ve been half as many races to exclude mirror and a lot more enjoyable for everyone.
2049 just isn’t my thing, but I still play occasionally. Overall thanks for doing this video and bringing more attention to my favorite series out there. Hit me up if you ever have any questions about Rush 1 or 2 on the N64 releases.

Most fun I ever had was racing on Track 6 in reverse with maximum wind and deaths enabled. Pretty much every AI racer will die on the first lap and it becomes a survival race!

That's really cool. I think I played 2049 in a arcades a handful of times, but SF Rush was the one in my mall.
Same here it actually taught me how to drive a standard since it had a working clutch
I always had the high scores and the arcade had a "Ghost" car of yourself that you could race to beat your own time which was a unique feature at the time and unlocking old Hemicudas as the fastest cars was killer! One other guy would occasionally manage to get one of my 2nd, 3rd place winning times only to witness me re-win them the next visit. On top of all the cool shortcuts, there are a few crash point techniques that can advance you at certain points instead of slowing you down. That was the secret to beating it.

I only had Rush 2049 on DC and loved it. Battle mode was looked over by most but its as much fun that can be had on 4 player splitscreen.
We always turned "deaths" on in the options menu and tried eliminating all the opponents by ramming them into the sides! That was the best part! We played that on circuit mode. And when we died ourselves we would quickly hit restart and give the controller to the next player. Completing many circuits that way. What a great time!

I did the same thing! But then try to finish first in a circuit without ever finishing a race. If you somehow manage to destroy all of your opponents in a race, you sacrifice yourself before the end.

Rush 2049 was so goated lmao, I think a remake of it would be so awesome. However, the console was pretty underwhelming as compared to its cabinet counterpart. I remember playing the arcade version all the time, and the console version was just not the same.

I LOVE THIS SERIES! Grew up with 1 and 2 on an emulator and I still love 'em to this day. Honestly, all of the issues you mention, I actually find them as qualities. I really dig the stiff handling and the difficult tracks a whole lot, and I'm not particularly good at them either, but I think once you understand that the way of the game is meant to be played, taking turns with ease, letting of of the accelerator to take turns, and understanding where your car might fly off the ground, it's just flows and it's so much fun. For me, it's an incredibly satisfying game every time, where every race I'm constantly focused on doing my best. I really wish there were more games like these three.

I love this series too, and I hope it came across how much I do! The difficult tracks were a ton of fun, especially in the first one. I find it so interesting how difficult it was to know where to go in that track with the straightaway with the loops on either end. That was hilarious and I was laughing the whole time!

Honestly I played San Francisco rush incessantly as a kid after it released. To the point that I was able to beat/win the circuit mode on every difficulty. And I had a blast searching for keys, and trying to get to the hidden stunt track area of track 6. I absolutely adored this game.

2049 is definitely the best version! If you find out all the great shortcuts and how to combine them. Those shortcuts are sometimes very hard to accomplish and yet very genius in the layout.

I agree, the physics in Rush 1 are really kinda terrible. I don't play the original much nowadays because it seems like I always crash because the physics forgot how a car is supposed to work rather than a mistake I made while driving. It's basically 1-1 with the arcade version though, so I guess I can't complain about the N64 version in this regard.
8:22 - You can drive either way around the loops on Sunset (track 6)! This track has no requirements except that you pass the checkpoint at the far end of each loop, you can even drive to the checkpoint and 180 back the other way if you want! The game doesn't do a good job of conveying this info, though.
13:02 - SF Rush the Rock is an enhanced edition of Rush 1. It includes all of SF Rush N64's tracks. Rush 2 does not have an arcade counterpart of any kind, unfortunately.
At 8:34 you can see the secret hidden stunt area for like a second. I don't think you mentioned it. Also I think the first game has Alcatraz as a secret track. Anyways great review!! I love these games. Rush the rock emulates perfectly in MAME now and can be overclocked to be 60fps. I also want to try emulating the arcade version of 2049. Idk if the dreamcast version's graphics are arcade perfect?

There is a way you can play this game in manual where you shift down or up right when you hit the ground and it straightens the car right up with good acceleration.
4:47 you could actually mitigate the stiffness of the hadnling of the cars by changing the steering type on the options so it resembles an actual wheel instead of the stick it always shows. The cars become more responsive thx to that little change (at least for me it was like that)

I found that in the first SF Rush I had to tap the break fast (like antilock brakes) in order to keep control while stopping and turning. This strategy helped me out when playing that game.
This game was an adventure game in a car. It was grand theft auto without cops. It was Diddy kong racing without the boss battles
I would love for this series to make a return where it's not just San Fransisco or USA but rather world wide. Just not in the hands of but corporate studios that would only ruined the source material. While also adding some sprints and rally races similar to the ones on the crusin series with elements of the NFS The Run.

SF Rush is still awesome, from the keys to the secret shortcuts, it has tons of replay value and it's great for some split screen racing, albeit a little squashed. Probably has the best high score name entry music of any game ever. Nothing nasty now, wh wh wh wh wh wh what's your name lol

I use to rent the first and second game a lot. I remember renting 2049 once and not really digging it and going back to Rush 2.
Rush: The Rock - Alcatraz Ed. was EVERYWHERE in my area. One of the definitive 90s arcade games for me. Rush 2 passed me by entirely, but 2049 was so hyped in Nintendo Power and magazines (though I actually had it on Dreamcast 🤔)
You didn't get to play multiplayer again?!?! I grew up playing SF Rush 2049 on the Dreamcast and boy was it a fucking riot playing stunt and battle mode. We mostly played on the demo that had both of those modes unlocked. And yes SF Rush (the first one) was BRUTAL!

Do you live in California? Because if you live in socal then I gotta help fix your lack of mutliplayer experience with some of these games. Like I'd recommend you do a video on Snowboard Kids 1 & 2, but you NEED to have played multiplayer. Same goes with Goemon's Great Adventure!

Rush 2 was always and still is my favorite. Almost everything you said about SF Rush I agree with. I think at one point as a kid I played it so much I was able to figure out the controls and not explode. God knows how long that took though.
I can say I either never knew there was a PS1 game or I must have forgotten, it reminds me more of Cruisin. 2049 always felt like a straight return to Rush 1. Wild controls, felt like I could never be in control just really weird. I think the visuals and concept of the future were beautiful and awesome, but it’s just odd. I wanted different cars than we got. I thought it was amusing they added Slim Jim advertisements but the Mtn Dew was the best, with the actual cans.
I always wished they had put them on Wii/WiiU VC but long after I realized it was probably due to the Dew licensing expiring, and of course Midway dying/being bought. But things from the license have trickled out since then and maybe someday there’s some hope minus the Dew.

For me, SF Rush is my prefered version. I don't know why, rationnaly speaking. The graphics and colors are more brightful. The sound effects are quite unique. The physic is tricky as hell.
Rush 2 is definitely more "tight" on every aspects but my feeling is that the graphics are dark or proportionally weird. It is a very solid game but I can't wrap my head around it even today.
Rush 2049, I just recently began playing it. I didn't play it back then because I didn't like the futuristic theme and the vibe of its cover... even though I always loved futuristic racing games like F-zero and Wipeout. I'm mainly being crushed by the difficulty and punished miserably every single time I try a new shortcut. This frustrates me as I feel the game is teaching me NOT to deviate from the main track but at the same time it entails me with all those shortcuts. I suppose I should continue to play it. Maybe I'm still too new to the game.
I had rush 2 as a kid and absolutely loved it. Played it to death. With friends and by myself. Maybe that’s why I love racing games and Mountain Dew these days.
I never had 2049 because I was a kid with no money but drooled over wanting it. And I’ve still never played it.
I played the arcade version of Rush 2049 at a church camp back in 2009 and spent most of the time in the game trying to unlock the black paint job for the Cuda. It's my only experience with the series, but I had way too much fun.
I love the N64 Rush series and the freedom to explore the tracks and stunt mode is nuts did you ever cover the PSP version of Rush?

Rush 2049 in the arcade sustained me during my college years.
The arcade version has very different physics however and _NO wings!_
After a while, I mastered death mode. Death mode works both ways, if an AI car blows up, it's out of the race. I would systematically remove the AI cars by ramming them from the rear, from the side, it all depended on where they were and what was coming, very situational and you had to be able to improvise on the fly and the pure dopamine RUSH you got from watching a car explode form your exploits, was exhilarating. Having 2 players made this even easier, as one person could focus on racing and the other eliminating AI cars. This was a really good way to unlock the cars and tracks. The first 2 rush games are in my top 5 for N64 titles, staying up all night to win a circuit with a buddy, getting all the keys and Mountain Dew cans.

Typically picking the Taxi and the Mobster, It adds so much to the race. Shunting CPUs to their firey combustion is pure satisfaction. Definitely a tough mode, but we have quite a blast playing it.
10:23 I think you misunderstood the difficulty as you choose the car. Perhaps the N64 is not well explained but in the arcade it's pretty clear that the difficulty there is of the car itself, not the game or the AI or the timer... In the arcade as you select the car, each car will have a meter for speed and one for handling. The beginning car will have huge handling and low speed.. that's why it's easier.. the extreme car will have a huge speed but little handling.. making it much harder to play with.. You can guess the other cars. So the higher the car difficulty, only means it goes faster and handles worse...That's all. Doesn't affect the AI. The in game difficulty settings then is about the AI itself and whatever else.
The difficulty based on track is self explanatory.. pretty standard on arcade racing games of the 90s... they all had each track labeled based on how hard the track itself is.
I have to say, rush 2049 is much more playable on the Dreamcast. The resolution is much crisper.
Also, while the 90 degree turns do make a resurgence, they're limited to only two of the six tracks, and I think add some lovely variety to them. I personally love the nighttime tracks because cornering and braking is very important.
I remember beating SFR on normal settings with the viper man the rage i remember was crazy high

I had OG San Francisco Rush in N64 as a little kid. I always tried to drift (push the one of the yellow buttons or B.....honesty don't remember but it was one of them LOL), tried to avoid getting the wall, it kinda helped honesty but mostly spin most of the time. I never played the Rush 2 and barely played San Francisco rush 2049 in a arcade, and never played LA Rush.
SF Rush N64 was one of the first games I got for the system and it deserves a special place in my gaming heart ❤️ Embarcadero was my favorite track and I always choose the the blue Exotic car. Unfortunately I missed out on Rush 2 during that time 😅
I remember going to the mall every Sunday and I always spend my quarters playing Rush 2049 Arcade Alcatraz (Track 4) is my favorite track of choice, Rocket ZX w/Advanced Settings & No Drones for 59~60fps👆🏻 2049 N64 was one of my favorite games to pickup and play during the end of the N64 era
I remember purchasing Midway Arcade Treasures 3 (PS2) at one point thinking that it was the Arcade version 2049 but nah! It was a port of the Dreamcast which was so and so and Alcatraz Edition wasn’t arcade perfect
I was in El Salvador I went to some random Arcade at some mall and I stumbled upon the Arcade Edition 2049 but Special Edition and what made it memorable was that it was localized in Spanish 🤯 believe it or not
Now in 2023, there is a record store by my area that only has a single Special Edition 2049 with no keypad lol, I always go for the best time on every track, Dreamcast 2049 I believe is the best port compared to the n64 after watching this I just got my copy of Rush 2 in the mail and currently going for 100%

Several things: 1. Great video! 2. PS1 Rush is an abomination. 3. Seeing this reminds how impressed I was with the N64 version but since I've started using MAME and a modded Arcade1Up Star Wars cabinet...it makes it look so much worse than I remembered. I'm actively looking for a Rush The Rock cabinet. That game is tied with Hydro Thunder for my favorite arcade racer. I just picked up a Hydro Thunder and am fixing it up. I hope to do the same with Rush! 4. I hated Rush 2049 at first, I just didn't get the art style and darkness of the game compared to the previous games. Once I was able to add it to said Arcade1Up cabinet through MAME, I'm able to play it as much as I want and I'm starting to love it! That stunt track on Rush 2 ate up hours of my childhood.

I remember renting SF Rush like every other weekend and then begging for Rush 2 when it came out (it was one of only 3 carts we actually owned) and then I played that one to death. 2049 never quite jived with me and I never understood why, so that's for putting it in words.
I think the car selection of 2049 is one reason I never quite got into it like I did with Rush 2. Which is a shame because the circuits look stunning, even if they do feel a bit vague.

I grew up playing Rush 2049, when I was younger I didn't know there were 2 entries before it, but 2049 is one of my favorite racing games. When you mentioned that some of the short cuts don't feel like time savers, I've found out that that's true, only a handful actually are, some are very risky to take and some are only meant to hide things like coins, but once figure out which ones are the right ones to take you'll stay in first at all times. I completely agree with the limited visibility too, it's rather hard to see those trolleys at certain points. I know the game got a release later on the PS2/XB/GC on the Midway Arcade Treasures releases but I'm not sure if its the arcade port or a port of the console version, maybe that cut track is there if its the arcade port?
I have 1 & 2 on the N64, and 2049 on the Dreamcast. Great trilogy, would love for an HD trilogy collection. Oh, completely forgot L.A. Rush... i haven't played that one.
I grew up with 2049 on the Dreamcast. It has all the various customization options. Engine, tires etc. Also all of the tracks have names in the DC version. Shame you couldnt experience battle mode, its amazing. One of the best car combat games ever made, I always wished it had bots. Also you left out the Obstacle mode. Which is an awesome bonus you get once you bet a certain number of tracks.

12:59 Rush the Rock is not at all an arcade port of Rush 2, but an arcade port of Rush consoles. The first Rush release on arcades had only 3 tracks. When the N64 version came out with a lot of new tracks and cars, the arcade version got updated with the same new tracks and cars as the console version, plus the full Alcatraz track and was labeled The Rock. Arcade owners could just install an updated rom in the same cabinet. So Rush the Rock is basically the arcade version of San Francisco Rush 1 from the N64 but with arcade graphics.
There is also a _PlayStation 2_ version of _Rush 2049_ in the _Midway Arcade Treasures 3..._ which also includes _San Francisco Rush the Rock: Alcatraz Edition_

there is another game that is a spiritual successor to rush called Nitronic Rush, and its really good, its sequel called distance is awesome too.

funny how people like things differently. This is my fav racing game of all time and I still play it semi-regularly 28 years later.
Man I loved this series, I grew up with Rush 2. But 2049 was this thing I could never get my hands on, and when my cousin finally let me have his copy, the battle mode... My Gosh.. It's the most fun I've had on an N64 to date, I've probably spent hundreds of hours spanking my brother and cousins on this mode, PLZ find someone to play with. It's AMAZING!!!

I saw a double Rush The Rock: Alcatraz Edition arcades at a karting location and Rush 2049 arcade games in a little bit at various locations with my summer camp in summer time and i have 2049 at my dreamcast and gamecube
Shoutouts to that one version of San Francisco Rush for PCs that for some inane reason was software-locked to one very specific kinda bad graphics card.

Actually I enjoyed the “repetitiveness” of the tracks in the original as it allowed for maximum exploring and exploitation of all the things to see instead of a hurried tour of the whole city in Rush 2 although I love that one for different reasons. Handling in SFR was tricky it’s true, but you could get the hang of it. What frustrates me to this day is the flawless way the drones drive and when they do crash they get put way farther ahead then you do when you crash. You have to drive frustratingly perfect to win in the circuit.
Also I don’t think you ever found the hidden half pipe area in Track 2, I always had a blast driving on that as a kid.
Rush 2 was my favorite
For Rush 2049 There is a PS2 port of the dreamcast version as well in one of the Midway Gems game packs. Its a decent alternative to the N64 version IF you dont own a dreamcast like me.
