  • Hi guys! Welcome to a new episode of Sampler Wars, where we compare two well loved samplers and see which one is best for you, beyond the spec sheet and in practical everyday use. This time, we´ll be looking as the ‪@SynthstromAudible‬ Deluge vs the ‪@AkaiProVideo‬ MPC. In part 1, we´ll go over the workflow difference of having a touch screen vs a small SP 404 type screen, note input, button combos and sampling.
    In Part two we´ll continue to dig in with things like the internal synths, cpu power, MIDI integration, portability and battery life and more! Hope you join the conversation! See you next time

    It would fun to see an update if you have played with the Deluge community firmware and screen change. I think the primary criticism of the complexity doesn't go away, but both products have evolved enough that this would be an easy popular video since so many of us are interested in your thoughts on these issues. Two years later I still found this and part 2 useful, thank you!

    I own both the Deluge and an MPC One, and both are great. The deluge obviously costs more then the One but seeing as the Live and One are very similar I think the comparison holds.
    The deluge is a brilliant portable music composition device but it’s screen and browsing ability lets it down. If you plan on using the deluge regularly then I agree that you’ll end up remembering all the shortcuts and that certainly helps, however if you know you are not going to be using it all the time then the frustrations mentioned in this video will be felt.
    Also if you enjoy sample editing then the MPC is the one to go for. The deluge does the job and is pretty novel in the way it shows the wavelengths but you cannot beat the Akai when it comes to editing and sampling.
    Like all comparisons it’s all about what you want as a composer. Deluge for Portability, sequencing and probability; MPC for sampling, beat making and those new virtual synths in the latest update.

    I absolutely love my Deluge - I traded in a few old korg boxes and some other gear and got one a year ago. As my only device the muscle memory is there (as you say!) and I can get where I want to quickly. The Deluge sampling workflow is not amazing (for instance, no truncate, which is a pain), but after a bit of practice it's quick to break up a beat or a melodic sample. I'm adding an SP-404 to the mix for live performance and to add a greater range of FX - the Deluge is very clean sounding and needs a companion to deliver more of a lofi vibe. Great video, thanks.

    My best friend has the Deluge and I have the MPC. After using both, I think the Deluge is better for sequence based music while the MPC is better for sampling. I wish you would do a comparison of the synth engine and FX capabilities on each. I found the MPC to be better and more versatile for FX while the Deluge has more comprehensive synth engines. Just my thoughts. They each have thier own advantages depending on the user's workflow and what style of music you are trying to make. They sound great together tho!!!!

      I looked at both a long time, but ultimately decided on the Deluge and I think you've outlined the differences well. I was looking for a really easy intuitive sequencer with synths and I didn't care about sampling so I think I made the right choice. But I can see how somebody who relies more on sampling might make a different choice. Also the Deluge requires more memorization to get the full functionality and to make it open up, and I can get why somebody might not want to take on that learning curve. I absolutely love it but I can get why others don't.

      Do you feel the mpc would be better in a live performance environment?

    • @alfreddawson3765
      @alfreddawson3765 2 роки тому

      @@adamking3380 I think it depends on your performance style. After using both devices, the MPC can definitely hold its own for a 2 hour set (even 4 hours on the battery if you really want to), but it still has some issues to perform well. For example, it's difficult to switch between projects due to load times, so you really have to have most everything in one big project and bounce everything to samples in order to transition smoothly from one song to the next. The Deluge can definitely be used as a standalone performance device, but I'm not sure that it could hold up for 2 hours, just due to the sample editing features. I think it would be great for a 30-45 min set, but any longer than that probably needs another device to help with transitions or generate more interest in the performance. The MPC has the XYFX, Pad Mutes, Track mutes, and Master FX like Half-Speed that make it ideal for live performance, so for the most part, the MPC wins. The Deluge works well as a companion for other gear, and could be the brain of a small setup, for example adding a small mixer, a Volca sample, and maybe a KP-3 Kaoss Pad would be a great combo for a 1-2 hour live set.

    The deluge’s superpowers are disk-streaming, the sequencer, portability(it’s a lot smaller than an MPC) and the singular vision of design that comes from one person. The MPC on the other hand is super flexible. The I/O(midi and 32 audio Chan routing), sampling choices(chop tool paradise, auto sample, fat ssd), and it’s solid cpu efficient synths and fx are awesome. But sensitive pads, good preset/packs, a modular synth and lush/complex fx are lacking on both. (But that where a M+ comes in if you can deal with the bleeding edge of a new product, crackles and crashes)

Once the muscle memory kicks in the experience is super low friction. The UI is extremely smart. There is 3 synths in it. The samplings / chopping UX is super nice. And the audio quality is on par with the best.

    I've had a Deluge for a few years and I sold it a couple of months ago. I still love the Deluge, the community behind it, the workflow, the performance and the company itself. On the other hand, it has some drawbacks and the lack of a decent screen is definitely the big one.
    Many Deluge users see this tiny 8-segment screen as a plus and I get that, but I'm not sold on it. It's actually the biggest reason why I sold it in the end (the other one was the lack of decent FX). In the beginning you deny it's an issue, you think you can live with it, you're making excuses for it and finding workarounds. But if you've had the thing for a while, it gets pretty old.
    It was cumbersome to browse for presets, load projects, etc. Having a qwerty keyboard on it helped for a while and you could type in your own filenames, which made life a bit easier, but it never felt fluent. Starting a project on the Deluge and wanting to finish it in Ableton was also something that felt a bit annoying. I felt there was was always some kind of workaround necessary for these type of things. Although the machine itself is very capable and once you know the shortcuts, you can get around it pretty fast, there also some major downsides.
    There's a decent chance that I will own another Deluge in the future or maybe it's successor in a few years, but for now I'm using an MPC Live 2 and for me it does every thing the Deluge did for me, being the brain of my hardware setup, being able to sample my own instruments and being the perfect sketch pad to start ideas on. The upside is that I can now easily start a project on the MPC and finish it in Ableton, the sampling workflow is really nice, having Splice support is a big plus, the FX are a lot better and easier to implement imo. And then I didn't even mention all the other features that got added in the meantime like support for Class Compliant Audio Interfaces.
    The MPC is not perfect either, but suits my needs a lot better.

    Long term Deluge user here. I'm in love with this little box, but if there was one other I'd get, it'd be the Akai. The Deluge is a brilliant, fuss free knob twisting delight. • @sinepilot
      @sinepilot 2 роки тому

      I love the way you describe it, it helps explain why I love it too. I come from a musician background and my main frustration creating electronic music has been finding a sequencer that feels like an instrument, as far as ease of bringing forth listenable (unsampled) songs are concerned. Unlocking the grid's potential is no different than constant practicing on a guitar...developing the muscle memory helps unlock the potential. The screen and wood make it easy to fetishize, just like any self respecting guitarist would of their axe! No disrespect to the MPC line and the people who make great music with it, but for me and my background, the Deluge was definitely the right choice.

      @@adamking3380 If you memorize the shortcuts you like to use on the Deluge, there should be no menu diving. It should feel a little more like an actual instrument in that respect. This is the comparison I’ve been waiting for! My main question is - which is better for (a flexible) live performance? Does one ‘out improvise’ the other?
    My gut says the MPC is better for my live performance ambitions - but there’s a LOT that I don’t know.
    Thanks for any responses!

    • @sinepilot
      @sinepilot 2 роки тому +3

      Out of the box, I suspect the MPC might be better. If you're chopping samples, the choice might get even easier. Their pads are well respected. I used to ask around a lot and nobody has ever mentioned superior pads, except for maybe Maschine. If you have to menu dive during a performance and aren't too familiar with everything the box can do, the MPC will get you there faster.
      However as soon as you add a MIDI controller with velocity and aftertouch to the equation, and assuming you're willing to devote the time to mastering the Deluge's grid, the comparison gets a lot stickier. As a sequencer I'm having a hard time imagining anything easier or more intuitive. Nothing is faster for getting an idea in the head into reality out of speakers. In this respect it really feels like an instrument. Having a wealth of synths on board (170 presets) makes it great for writing from scratch _or_ filling in the gaps left by your main synths. Once the shortcuts are ingrained, there should be virtually no menu diving during a performance.
      I say all this as a musician who pretty much ignores sampling, so that really didn't factor into my decision. I used to be a bassist and so I'm accustomed to knowing only one instrument, but devoting the time to learn it well and so it's natural for me to approach the Deluge in the same way. Keeping the shortcuts ingrained is no different than constant practice on the guitar, muscle memory is an integral part of being a musician. I can see how somebody who relies more on sampling (esp creating their own) might make a different choice. But if easy fast sequencing is of primary importance, for both drums and other instruments, then Deluge all the way.

    I have a Deluge and MPC One.
    I love them both and have yet to mate them. I will say that Deluge slows down when I start having too much fun; the MPC never slows down. Deluge also has voice stealing. I bet the processing power and memory are noteworthy comparison item - prob with that is MPC has tons of each and shares that need with its massive display.
    Lastly I’ll say sample management on the Deluge is terrible. It’s too easy to mess up organization; and unless you’re handy with XML editing and/or completely re-hashing your sample orG structure it’s just a total drag.
    Last last - sneaking suspicion that MPC just sounds overall crisper; punchier. But Deluge is great for getting weird and I think if I just use it to make weird stuff I can pass it through the MPC and vice versa and have a stellar time

Sample editing is awkward enough that I do it on a computer instead, I don't mind that too much but it is a downside. The lack of velocity on the pads is another real issue, but on the positive side its very easy to record midi from another synth, and its also very easy to edit velocity.

      Hello my friend, bang for buck I’d recommend getting into the MPC ecosystem with the MPC One. The platform has grown immensely with each new firmware update (new one coming out on the 23rd of june) and seems to have room for more. My second recommendation would be the sp404mk2 if you want a straightforward sampler. Hope that helps!

    Availability is also important, I wanted a Deluge, BUT you can only get it from NZ and they don't do paypal or any form of credit, There is also the dreaded VAT and import duty etc to consider. Whereas the MPC live(now live 2) is available in all your normal music suppliers where you can pay via Paypal Credit(in my case) or other credit companies and no import problems. Also there is a lot of information on how to get started on the MPC, not so much for the Deluge.
    If the Deluge had a better/larger screen I would overcome the availability problem somehow. Used Deluges are quite rare in the UK as that was another avenue I explored unsuccessfully. If they make a Deluge mk2 with a larger screen and touch and velocity sensitive buttons, I would be right at the front of the queue, but I can't in all honesty see that ever happening. In the meantime I am very happy with my MPC live.

      "BUT you can only get it from NZ and they don't do paypal or any form of credit" that's not true at all (at least for USA residents). There are credit card, paypal and bank transfer options. I paid 24.00 for shipping and had the unit a week later.

    What I'd LOVE the MPC to do is to copy the user interface / controls of the Fantom G series. That sequencer really was something else, it was easy to use and was lightning fast even without a touchscreen. You could connect a mouse but I never ever used that, since the scrollwheel, cursor keys and shift key was all that was needed. Direct editing of the pianoroll was very much a list based affair though. Note sure how you could improve that except for using a larger screen and a pen - kinda like why I enjoy using Korg Gadget on the ipad a lot.

      Totally different use case, octa is more leaning toward live performance. While MPC and Deluge are designed as daw in a box. Ofcourse you can apply effects per notes on mpc or deluge, but you will have different approach to reach the goal.

    Deluge reminds me a weird marriage of that emu 128 with yamaha rs7000 . Is a proper fun groovebox for electronic especially and packs a killer fm and prolly one of the best sequencers too. .mpc is well mpc not really a groovebox but a drum machine sampler with optional synths which they sound meh at best and 90%, if act as a main clock in a dawless ecosystem is out of sync.. but for functionality is a mucb faster machine to learn . Deluge is pretty deep
    Last but not least deluge actually fixing bugs on updates dont bypass em...

    I've switched from MPC live to Deluge, then to Force, then back to Deluge and now thinking about getting the Live 2. I'm definitely not able to choose :D
    For me the Deluge screen was never an issue. I loved to use the OP-Z without any screen, so this also fine. My nr. 1 issue with the Deluge is the performance. Just take a really good patch from boards of deluge and you're done. Scrolling starts lag, everything slows down. And that's just one patch. 2nd...the effect are really "meh". No proper distortion, reverb and delay don't sound great.
    I like the workflow, it's fast. I feel i can get something started quickly, but find it difficult to finish it on the device. And there's no usb audio or export to ableton, so finishing something outside of the box will be difficult as well.
    As for the MPC...looking back, there's not much to complain. There are drawbacks, but not that huge. I miss some modern ways of sequencing (param. locks, chance..) and a clip system rather than a sequence by sequence song mode. Also i can't switch from project to project seamlessly like on the Deluge and loading a project takes a while. But when it comes to sampling...OMG, it can't get easier than that.
    I think there will be a Deluge for sale soon :)

    I feel like Maschine gets overlooked a lot, due to its software/hardware combo origin. Coming from a classic mpc background (60 and 3000), I never got back into the mpc line. They always very menu-divy, compared to the Maschine software. I don’t own the maschine+ (yet) but I don’t think the mk3 and + differ alot.
    But what my Maschine-spoiled self doesn’t have, is a portable, ‘lounge anywhere and play around’ allround sampler.
    I do own the op-1, sp404 OG and still waiting on my mk2. But as much as I love them for what they are, they shine and frustrate both , due to their limits.
    On paper the mk2 is a dream come true, but the biggest ‘what if’ is the Deluge to me. And while the MPC probably does more things that appeal to my genre (hiphop), I can’t help but get the feeling I’m getting the same experience as Maschine, but less fluid workflow wise. The Deluge might be one ‘lazy chop’ function away.
    How ‘annoying’ do you think the sampler’s limits on the deluge get over time? And does the ease of the sequencer compensate for the extra time it takes to edit samples when looking at its workflow compared to the MPC?

    • @sinepilot
      @sinepilot 2 роки тому

      I don't do much sampling so it was an easier decision for me. If sequencing has been your frustration, Deluge's grid is the answer. The right sequencer was the missing holy grail of my setup until I found the Deluge. So fast & intuitive compared to anything else

    • @bagoftrix
      @bagoftrix 2 роки тому +1

      @@sinepilot you make a great point: ‘what is my main frustration in my current workflow’ is what I should focus on. I think due to starting out on vintage gear, I’m pretty quick with sample editing, but also spoiled by maschine. I think what my dream machine (pun intended) is a portable battery powered Maschine+. Which would be a logical next step for Maschine. Guess I’ll just wait for my sp404 mk2 and that next Maschine version in the future.
      But… I do love gear, ideally I just have them all and switch when I feel like it hahaha! Too bad my budget doesn’t agree.. at all. I’m a weirdo that likes the grey Octatrack just because of its look. I want a deluge because it’s different and made by a small passionate company … yeah, most of the time common sense is out the window and it’s just a feeling. And a dosage of fomo.

    • @sinepilot
      @sinepilot 2 роки тому

      @@bagoftrix So what do you think you're missing more? A great sequencer or a great sample editor? If you've already got an Octatrack, my vote is go with the Deluge. Full disclosure: I don't juggle many files or samples so the reported pain of browsing the Deluge isn't really a deterrent for me.

      I stopped following Maschine after a while... From what I last heard the software was a bug-ridden clusterf**k though. Any news on that front?
      Rn I don't own any of these boxes. What I want is sth. that has intuitive/logical workflow as much as possible, gets me off staring at my computer's screen as much as possible, and getting as far to finished song before loading stuff into a DAW and finishing there. Would I be mistaken to dismiss Maschine from the list of candidates in your opinion?

    • @bagoftrix
      @bagoftrix 2 роки тому +1

      @@kostoglotow its been stable for me, I had a horrible version some updates ago, but right now it’s in a good place I think. The hardware/software synergy is what makes me love this workflow the most. Zero menu diving. But granted, they are slow in getting features added that should’ve been there already. Like backup auto-saving. Crash means bye bye everything since you last manual save. But no device or software is perfect, to me, it’s workflow almost is.

    Well done so far!
    I seldomly watch video's from start to end, but this one happens to be very fitting for me (an I watched it from start to end)
    You already talked about my main 'concern' (screen vs no screen).
    My second big question with these machines comes to 'the rest of the process'. So after making a song on the device. What do you (have to) do to make it a finished track. I'm thinking multitracking to a DAW (do you need it, how well does it work etc.etc.).
    Third big question : internal synth engines. How do they compare soundwise. Same for the FX sections. (is that question 4 then?)
    Fourth (fifth, if you count FX as a separate question) using the device as you 'main brain' in a multi instrument setup. What are the pro's and con's for each one when using them as your main sequencer for other synths / drum machines.
    Thanks man, I really like the niche you fill when it comes to talking about how it is to use a product without ending up with 30minutes of blablabla
    And one kind request , please don't use intermediate ads (they did not appear, but if you have plans.....) .
    I know it will generate more money (and you have to earn a living), but it really kills the video flow for me (and I usually end up skipping to something else because I don't like this)

    I cant stand remembering deluge button combos and that dam file diving in the limited screen , and even though when i have used it ive gotten original cool sounding stuff i think i ill sell mine as i get sick of forgetting how to operate it if i dont use it for a couple months. i have a lot of software and gear and instruments so i dont feel like dedicating most my time to one device . I have bad short term memory and im not good at reading huge manuals so if i was to dedicate most my time to one device besides string instruments and keyboards , it would be to software like ableton . hate the deluge screen and i dont find it “retro charming” at all and wish they would design a plug in screen display app for easier work flow and less file diving . not to mention its hard for me to see the pad menu unless im in a really bright room or use a flashlight so i had to buy a layover menu short cut to even see where things are. the people at synthstrom are quite helpful though. They have a woman in customer service who’s name i cant recall but she is great ! and very helpful.
