    I considered adding the oxi one to the mix but stuck with the deluge for sequencing since it does pretty much everything + sequencing. Couldnt think of having another device on the desk doing one thing. Crazy how much the deluge does and how intuitive it is. When i see the oxi one, I think of all the new things i have to learn and different types of sequencing. I just want to hit a pad, then another to set its length, done. The oxi looks like the octatrack of sequencing and after owning like 4 octatracks over 6 years cause i just had to figure it out. I've learned to keep it simple.

    Great video! My dream would be a combo of the Oxi, Polyend Play, and Deluge. I bought a Oxi, but sold it and stuck with the Play+ because i use the samples a lot and the random play modes are super fun for improvising. The Oxi sequencer experience is light years ahead tho, plus it just works. Never able to get slides to work on the Play, but within minutes of booting up the Oxi had them going. May have to buy another one lol. Stochastic mode was super fun as well

    Wondering if the Deluge community firmware will add a feature similar to Oxi harmony mode? I use my Deluge mainly to control my modular synth, as a drum machine, and occasional voices to supplement my modular. It works well for all that, but my Sinfonion module functions as a "harmony mode" for all my modular tracks and Deluge can't participate. Oxi One would solve that problem for me, and free up a bunch of modular rack space, but I'd still need Deluge (or something else) for my drums.

    • @haciendaUS
      @haciendaUS 2 місяці тому

      yeah, i switched from Hapax to Deluge b/c of the arranger mode but so much of the open source work has been on the audio side, which is what i use it least for. it's a great brain to run my several pieces of external gear across 16 MIDI channels but especially since the latest Hapax firmware (2.0) it's light-years ahead of Deluge in terms of MIDI composition. if Squarp could ever bring themselves to embrace true linear arrangement, I'd likely switch back

  • @Cookielayinjack

    I think oxi's main strengths is modular integration with all the cv and gate outputs. The hapax and deluge definitely have more features that justify their price points, but they are like $500usd over the oxi, so I would hope those offer a little more. Oxi one black edition is sooo sexy.

  • @letmefeelthevibes
    @letmefeelthevibes 2 місяці тому +2

    Cool :) I love my Deluge, I can do pretty much everything that comes to my mind with it. I'd say its "killer feature" is the audio looper that helps me a lot to making transitions.

    • @letmefeelthevibes
      @letmefeelthevibes 2 місяці тому +4

      @@javiermeza2557 Sure.
      So 2 things about my transitions depending on the my setup:
      1_ if i use only the Deluge in standalone, i don't use the audio looper for transitions, because the Deluge has no loading time: when you change from a song/project to an other, it will do so seemlessly on beat! So you can make transitions playing with effects, cutoff frequency, etc.... classic stuff.
      2_ if i use the Deluge to sequence other gear, then i will send the entire setup's audio output to the Deluge's audio input. When I want to transition to next song, or just next vibe, and i need to change my other synths patches/presets: then i will create an audio loop that i can play with (with effects, cutoff freq, etc..) with the Deluge while I change the patches/presets of my other synths. Then i can switch to next song/project sequence on the Deluge.
      My english is a little rusty, i hope i was clear enough and it can help you in your decision :)

    • @javiermeza2557
      @javiermeza2557 2 місяці тому

      @@letmefeelthevibes wow thanks for the input! I got some more Qs for you :)
      About Setup 1: You said deluge transitions from one song to another seemslessly on the beat, but you play with effects etc. Do you have a midi controller mapped to the deluge and use the inboard effects or do you have a separate effects units to help with transitions (like an octa)?
      I would really like to keep the setup as minimal as possible but wondered about this.
      About Setup 2: When looping, do you mean you loop like 8 bars of the current song, then change all the presets and stuff on the other gear, and once everything is ready you apply effects to the 8 bar that is looping before transitioning? If so, again the same question, how do you use effects?
      Your english is very good and clear, thank you for the inputs :)

    • @letmefeelthevibes
      @letmefeelthevibes 2 місяці тому

      @@javiermeza2557 1_ i use inboard effect controlled with Launchcontrol XL, but it's not necessary, you can already control 2 effect parameters at once on the Deluge, and switch from a set of effect parameters to an other by the press of a button.
      An octatrack would give you more effects and the ability to crossfade from a song to an other in a more DJ style. It's up to you to decide if you "need" it.
      2_ Yes. Deluge can apply effects to only one sound within a clip, or the entire clip, or the entire song, and it's pretty straight foreward to use.
      Check out RSKT - the capable musician , he made the best Deluge tutorials and can help you understand a lot about the Deluge.
      Also SynthDad, he made a pretty good video about Deluge's looper, and other great Deluge's videos used with VCV Rack and other gear.

    • @letmefeelthevibes
      @letmefeelthevibes 2 місяці тому

      @@javiermeza2557 i simply use the inboard effects, no midi controller. I can use additional effects from Ableton or VCV Rack sometimes.
      Midi controllers with Deluge can be a nice extra if you want a keyboard with aftertouch and velocity sensitive keys and/or some knobs to assign to whatever you'd like.
      Octatrack is nice, but it is a whole different beast with a very different workflow, i would recommend to really learn deeply one before considering the other.
      About looping, yes. I loop the lenght of the longest pattern/melody, then when it's looping i can change the presets and stuff of any external gear i need to change, then i apply transition/build up effects to the loop, then move foreward from there.
      Check out RSKT - the capable musician, and SynthDad. They both made great videos that will help you understand how the Deluge works and what it can do (which is crazy). RSKT for the basics to advanced. SynthDad is more for advanced stuff.

      Not entirely true. A lot of people bought or ended up using the Deluge mainly for its sequencing capabilities. Notably the arbitrary amount of arbitrarily long clips was a feature
      basically no other hardware sequencer had. Also the very big matrix which was way more convenient than the classical row of 16 buttons where every information must be crammed.

      I know that. But it being a very powerful sequencer too means that it makes sense to compare it with dedicated sequencers, specifically for people (which I never said are me btw, I bought a Deluge specifically to get a self-contained groovebox) who are mainly interested in that aspect. That's what this video is for, because on the sequencing front, no they are not totally different beasts. People who already are covered in the synth department anyway may legitimately wonder which one would be the best fit for them (because before the Oxi One and Polyend Play were released, the Deluge was kind of the only offer for that kind of hardware sequencing workflow, even for people who don't care much for internal synths).

The Hapax just made sense to me and only the harmonizer function was confusing. I don’t rely on these day to day as I also have Deluge and Polyend Play, so being able to pull it out and use it without having to relearn it was useful. Your product is looking promising to fulfill that, and it has a seamless workflow for step and pattern building and scaling. I have a notation launchpad pro m3 but it feels limited for hardware sequencing, I don’t get the fluid feel as I know it has limitations. Oxi is looking very promising, well done.

    Had 2 Deluges (old and the new OLED)....Nice idea but with wav samples it just crashed all the time. So ended up using it like as a midi sequencer (an expensive one). Kind of pointless when the OXI does midi seq 10x better. Oxi has way mrore connectivity and build quality is superiror. Pair OXI up with the Roland SH4D (for roughly the same price as the Deluge) and its far more powerful. For the me the only thing letting the OXI down is the chord mode - for some reason its impossible to create user chords with Bank A and Bank B of chords. And Deluge has a better arranger mode.

    Hi, Attention !!! There is a big error in your comparison of midi modulations that I must correct because such an expensive choice should not suffer from any malpractice: The Deluge LFOs as well as its envelopes absolutely do not work at midi to modulate an external synth or whatever. they just act internally. So no midi LFO!
    The arpeggiator, velocity and aftertouch as well as the mpe or modwheel work in midi.
    You should also know that several new scales are coming soon in the next update as well as a chord mod and a custom chord mod.

    • @MidlifeSynthesist
      @MidlifeSynthesist  2 місяці тому

      Hi, thank you for pointing that out, indeed the LFOs and envelopes on Deluge only work internally with its own synths. You can however automate all CC lanes either in live record or grid edit, so it is still very powerful and flexible in that regard. After seeing your comment though, I edited out my mention of LFOs to avoid confusion 👍🏻.
      Regarding future new features such as chord mode, as I said in the video, new firmware is always coming up on these two and I hope the comment section keeps us up to date.
      PS: I am a healthcare worker so the word "malpractice" is particularly hurtful to me since it means "improper, illegal, or negligent professional behaviour", which I would argue certainly does not apply here. The Deluge is Synthstroms only product and Oxi only makes a few things, that will probably be in production for decades. If a Roland box is in production for 5 years it’s a miracle. I don’t think their dsp stuff these days is going to age very well.

    I think if someone makes music by arranging hand made sequences (for example someone plays keys or guitar and tries to find the right sequences on those instruments), the Deluge is closer to that workflow and has more to offer, (more and longer tracks, audio tracks, looping). If someone composes music on sequencers, using sequencer attributes as a “music idea machine” then the Oxi One has a lot more to offer. The Hapax is a very good choice for both of these music making styles, and out of these 3 devices it is also the one that is easiest to learn and implements the best user interface, and also (even)more midi connectivity than the other 2.

      Eh, can't say I agree. I bought a Pyramid to serve as my main sequencer because I wanted to do live midi looping. I have found it to be frustrating. The manual is poorly organized. Squarp's support for their devices is not great, and the community around the devices tries to fill in the missing pieces, but often I found they did that in defensive and passive aggressive ways. This video reminded me that I need to explore midi looping on my Deluge; maybe I can ditch the Pyramid.

    Hands down, the Oxi One is the biggest hardware let down in my history as a synth nerd/producer. It promises something, it is not. It is not the complex, ultimate Midi Cv sequencer. For the price (and buzz of the YT synth salesmen) one could expect a professional tool for music making. To be fair, the build quality is great. But the main part, the sequencing, is simply not good. The layout is confusing. If you want to create complex patterns with Eurorack and some other hardware synths it all starts to fall apart. It might be okay for the hobbyist to create a semi random sequence. But for the 750$/€ you can expect more. Looking back when I owned the Beatstep Pro, this one is much more hands on and clear to create music with. And the price point is really good. After the Oxi One I went back to sequence with Ableton via Midi CV Yarns, my 0-Control and a Keystep 37. Don't believe the hype!

      Try reading the manual. Just because it format come with you doesn’t mean it can’t do all the things you say and make complicated or intricate rhythms and patterns. I mean no disrespect but you are not doing it right.
      The oxi one is one of the fastest writing tools I’ve ever used and has seen an insane amount of updates. If the oxi is something you find confusing I think you’re going to have a much harder time with anything else that’s half as capable

    Oh man, I should have held onto my Oxi one, I had it very early on and it kept freezing and crashing and irritated the hell out of me. Seems it’s grown to be a hell of a beast.
    Looking to get a sequencer again and finding myself choosing between the two, but it’ll probably be the deluge because it’s also a hell of drum machine and rompler too. At least from the last time I used the Oxi, surfing around the grid piano roll was much smoother with the deluge for me, but this was a while ago. The real answer is I shouldn’t have sold either hehe
