Synthstrom Deluge as a Sample Mangler (resample trick)

  • There's a lot of debate about the abilities of the Elektron Octatrack being unparalleled with other samplers. When people talk about the Deluge, they often think of it as a bit of a "straightforward" sequencer or stem playback device, and that they need an OT to really mangle samples. I disagree!
    Having owned both a Synthstrom Deluge and an Octatrack for quite a long time, I've got a pretty good understanding of where there's some crossover - and this video demonstrates a fraction of the mangling capabilities the Deluge has (on top of all the other amazing things it does). They are both different machines with different workflows, and both have pros and cons that will be up to the user which one is "best" (for them). Everyone has their own interpretation of HOW they like to mangle samples, too. So, that's my way of saying YOU DO YOU BABY, NO NEED TO BE A TRIBAL DOUCHEBAG ABOUT IT.
    All sounds and processes are internal within the Deluge using the stock 808 kit, but the final output has a bit of stereo saturation from the Deluge running through my eurorack (which I forgot to bypass - sorry mum).

    Awesome work and some excellent rowdy noises! BTW, if you hit Play and Record again whilst it's resampling, it will run to the end of the loop and finish, then your recordings are always the right length for your current track.

    I bought teh Deluge mostly bc of this video. If you want perfect loops, BPH, use the same key press when u turn off recording (press and hold record, press play). Cheers, man!

      Ugh, can't believe I forgot that shortcut to auto-switch it off again... So much built into this machine that I sometimes forget a shortcut! Hope you have fun with your Delly!

      I accidentally went a bit too destructive in this one, but that's part of the fun too! And yeah, the automatic structuring of resamples in the Deluge is a godsend

      The key is how quickly you can move: mangle > resamples > reload > repeat forever. Keeping each mangling on it's own row of a kit also means you can "time travel" back to previous versions - kind of like peeling back the layers in a looper

      Once you have resampled do you create a new kit and load the resampled audio on it? Could you explain the combo of buttons - how you did the pitch so that the sample did not slow down? Thanks so much - haven’t done this on my Deluge yet! cheers

    • @briberysproductionhouse
      @briberysproductionhouse  2 роки тому

      @@peacefulpigeon7254 you can either do new kit or new row - I show both techniques in this vid. To timestretch you need to disable the “link” setting between pitch/speed on the far left column of pads

    after doing resample+play, you can push this same button combination again and it will automatically stop playing and resampling when the current loop ends

    Although the Deluge and Octatrack are totally different beasts, they both share having so much flexibility within each device that you can come up with really creative workflows. I don't think there are many devices that fall into this category.
    I have similar thoughts with my Octatrack - I both love and hate it... And if I don't use it in a while, I forget how to do even really simple things! Nothing but love for my Deluge though, and although it has some cryptic shortcuts, general use and resampling etc are super Intuitive.
    Cool video by the way - thanks for sharing!

    Here’s another one: chop your loops and give the slices a “stretch” playback mode, then place notes with different gate lengths and the loop accelerates and slows down based on your pattern

    Whooaaa this is so cool. This thing seems so much cooler than almost every sampler/sequencer, but the lack of export makes me so sad. Nothing else seems to provide the option to make the strange
    combo of music I want to make as readily as the Deluge. What a crazy instrument.

    • @Cybrianon

      My sentiments exactly. I'm a guitarist, with techno leanings. I did some research, and this unit kept recurring in the top options, based on the type of music I wanted to create, and the methods I use to realize my creative vision. Finally decided to pick one up, but found them as rare as hen's teeth, here in North America. I didn't want to buy a used Deluge, and I wanted a machine that featured the newer OLED display, so I went straight to the source and ordered one from Synthstrom Audible, in New Zealand. The website is easy to navigate, the purchase process simple. Within a week, my Deluge was on its way, shipped directly to my door. The cost (in US$) was sobering but I took the plunge, because the builders of the instrument will most likely create future upgrades which keep the Deluge at the productive forefront, and - let's face it - the price will most likely head higher.

      @@Cybrianon Since watching this I got an SP404MK2 and I do love it. But I still have Deluge on the wishlist and feel the same about it haha. I'd go the same route as far as getting the new one with OLED. I'm keeping my eye on it while I save because the Push 3 caught my eye haha.

    I have an Akai Midi Mix going into my deluge, And in the deluge im primarily mixing Audio Stems that I have sampled from my laptop.
    Its disappointing because it seems Midi control is not compatible with audio tracks on the deluge, As it just says 'Cant' on display,
    Im simply trying to use volume faders, and filters controlled externally. Any help?

    question on the sidechain. How exactly does it work? Only on hi hats and bass drums and on per track basis only? you cant sidechain high hats from track 1, with bass drum from track 2, right?

    • @briberysproductionhouse
      @briberysproductionhouse  2 роки тому +1

      Hey, sorry I missed this one. There is only a single side-chain, but anything can be the trigger for it.
      So yes, you could sidechain track 1 hats from the track 2 kick, but this kick would be the sidechain trigger input for ALL tracks that are sidechained.
      By default, the kick drum in all the stock kits is set to trigger, but you can change this to literally anything - or send multiple sounds to trigger the sidechain.
      Then, each and every sound (i.e. every synth, every audio track, and every row in a kit) has it's own sidechain amount and an adjustable ADSR curve for the sidechain - so you can get pretty detailed and customised on the sound.

    • @briberysproductionhouse
      @briberysproductionhouse  Рік тому

      Sorry man, sold my OT shortly after getting the Deluge. You can do the same sort of thing, but the workflow is far far longer and more laborious (IMO, of course). Resampling is so easy on the Deluge and I found it really annoying on the OT, but YMMV!

    • @pedrol8234

    • @briberysproductionhouse
      @briberysproductionhouse  Рік тому +1

      @@pedrol8234 it’s a super powerful machine, but you kind of have to work within its limits, as it’s can’t “do everything”. There is almost always a workaround for everything, but the OS can be pretty dense sometimes. I’d suggest watching a stack of YT vids and reading through the Elektron forum to find answers for what you are wanting to do!

    the deluge is too much for me... each time you resample, where are those other samples going? are they all playing at the same time? I dont think so. so what happened to them? they are just somewhere in the memory, unnamed? yeah, its too myopic for me. its like looking through a pinhole.

    • @briberysproductionhouse
      @briberysproductionhouse  Рік тому +2

      Everyone is different when it comes to gear and what makes sense to them - Deluge is no exception.
      To answer your questions: every time you resample it goes to a "resample" folder. In the vid, I was resampling, loading that resampled track, and muting the previous one.
