Great video man. Yeah, I love the Deluge vibe. I’ve had mine for some time now, I loved it immediately, but unlike other gear, that honeymoon phase didn’t go away. I’ve had so much gear over the years, and the Deluge, for me, is the best device I’ve ever owned. I would say the eighth great thing about the Deluge is Synthstrom Audible - they are so dedicated to this machine, and their users. The feature updates have been phenomenal! Enjoy your new baby!

I have almost zero production knowledge/experience. I’ve been a didgeridoo player for about 27 years now and play hand drums and a few other instruments.
Been watching a ton of videos on various devices. The Deluge sits at the top of my list (along with SP404 & Maschine +).
This little box CHANGED MY LIFE. It's everything I've wanted, in one portable machine. I produce acid and oldskool rave, and this is THE synth/ sampler/ looper/ sequencer/ drum machine I've always needed without breaking the bank. You'll be burying me with it. And I TOTALLY relate to the "vibe" of this box. It gets under the skin, and stays...

Thanks for this in-depth look at the Deluge! After much research and watching many reviews/tutorials on the Deluge, it certainly packs a BIG "punch" when it comes to what one gets in this unit. I have not seen anything come close to its value (features/performance to $$) so far. In addition, I realized that the reviewers and those providing in-depth tutorials can go from scratch to creating an almost full song (or at least some great music) in far less time than other well-known devices. Very impressive. It appears to be very intuitive and great ease-of-use when it comes to its workflow process. In addition, very little menu-diving which is great. The majority of the functionality is right in front of you. Other units have a ton of SHIFT functionality not labelled, or, significant menu-diving. Again, thank you!

Wow! Im blown away by the ease of use. That time stretch is so easy too! Im super salivating right now...I just bought my first Drum machine/Sampler, the Isla S2400, I have midi keyboard, the SLMK3, Ableton live 11 on laptop, and I really prefer hardware over software...this Deluge looks like a perfect fit for a beginner like me?......thank you for this video...

Your channel helped me find the Rytm when I was looking for an awesome analog drum machine. Since then, I found the Deluge as well and between the two I have never been more prolific. It was like a light switch was flipped. Glad to see you're hooked too. One thing I will say: I am currently new enough, I still go cross-eyed over any discussion of sidechain. If anybody has a good link that breaks it down, I'd be most appreciative.

Sidechain is basically using ie. a kick, to duck the volume of another track. This can clarify a mix so a bass track doesn't interfer with the drums, or a synth track doesn't overwhelm the drums, also for a pumping effect on a track for dynamic effect.
I bought an MPC One but never really vibed with it. This seems like the beefed up circuit tracks that I was hoping to get with the MPC. I really like the idea of easily switching between working standalone and then integrating with a larger setup.
Will probably buy this once I sell the MPC, thanks for the video showing its features. I'm glad you did the comparisons with the Circuit Tracks.

As both a Deluge and Rytm owner, the Deluge has changed how I interact with the Rytm: I still use the Rytm for pure percussion, however I now control any of it's more tuneable elements via Keystep and/or Deluge (in the past, any Rytm pad where I found myself using Chromatic mode to play melodies will probably be sequenced by the Deluge now rather than the Rytm).
The Rytm's MIDI OUT is connected to Keystep's MIDI IN, Keystep's MIDI OUT is configured to MIDI THRU and sent to Deluge's MIDI IN. Now either Keystep or Rytm can be used to control the Deluge or record into the Deluge's sequencer, and the Deluge synths can now benefit from the Keystep's velocity and aftertouch. Meanwhile, Deluge's MIDI OUT is going to Rytm's MIDI IN and Rytm's MIDI THRU is going to both my Mother 32 and Subharmonicon via a splitter, and then the SubH's clock is patched to my DFAM, so the Deluge and Keystep are controlling the Rytm and all three elements of my Moog tower. It's so much fun.
If you actually followed all that, you'll notice I've created a loop of MIDI devices each controlling the other. One issue I ran into, I usually want the Deluge to be my primary clock but the Keystep wants to take over depending on whether I'm using the Keystep's arpeggiator/sequencer, and this would create all sort of funky unwanted behavior because the Keystep was in turn getting it's clock from the Rytm and the Rytm was getting it's clock from the Deluge. It created a looping paradox that the hardware couldn't handle. There was no way I could find to get the Deluge to ignore the clock coming from the Keystep without creating even more unwanted consequences. I was able to fix this by changing the clock source on the Keystep to CV instead of MIDI (so it doesn't get any clock from the Rytm), and then running a patch cable from Deluge's Gate #4 (the one Deluge gate that sends out clock info) into Keystep's CV Sync In. Now the Keystep is getting clock info directly from the Deluge and can arpeggiate without everything going wonky.
Cool setup, and great problem solving to make it as flexible as possible. I'm a big fan of having everything assignable to everything else, so you can go wherever the creative flow takes you. I'd love to see the setup in action!

Great video! Im very new to making my own music. I've been mixing live for a few years but other then that I'm not very musically inclined that I know of. I started with a pocket operator a year ago and now I already have an MPC live 2 and the tascam model 12 😊. I had my eye on $1100 worth of pedals but after thinking about it for a few days I might buy one of these next.

I like most things digital. But I would like to make ambient with light beats and very weird sounds. My kids are musicians so the main goal is to produce what ever they want. They play instruments (drums, piano, guitars, vocals.)
The pedals im intrested in are the microcosm, Deco, bananana effects tararira.

I gradually needed a more focussed production sound so purchased Tanzbär 2 drum machine. But listening to songs made only on Deluge last September I'm blown away by the production (I did rerecord it through an Oto Boum analogue compressor). I'm going to drag Deluge out from under the bed, I need it's extended arrangement benefits.
For me it is the best ‘all in one’ box I’ve found. There are plenty of instruments that do specific things better, but the workflow and flexibility of Deluge is hard to beat. Thanks so much for watching!

Having had the Deluge right from the beginning, I agree with all said in this video. The only two issues I wanted to highlight is 1) complex midi mapping f.ex to a LaunchControl mixer or Faderfox midi device is still a pain; 2) when you add all your samples to a 512GB or 1TB as card, the small screen is still limiting and I tend to use my 1010music BlackBox much more for sampling. However, with a large room full of music gadgets, the Deluge is still the one I will rush to rescue if a fire breaks out ;-) it is refreshing to see this video as it expresses well exactly how I felt three years ago or so, and I am sure it will last for you as well.
Thanks! I'm working through the sample management now. I've decided to make specific folders for dragging samples in to the Deluge. I'm renaming the key samples and folders of samples in to 4 characters, so it will be more user friendly. More planning on the front end, but more usable in the long run. I like the thought it takes to decide what I really want to have access to. I'm super excited to use the deluge for years to come!
Interesting to read about the Blackbox. I was just looking at that and wondering Blackbox or Bitbox Micro - oh, I also have a Deluge, hence the comment.

*don't try this at home unless you're a tech* I rewired mine to supply a keyboard with power out of the DIN socket, so I can run it off the powerbank or charger & still use my controller.
also, the new screen.... game-changer. even though it's the same information as the old moving-around-red-crayon LED display, it's so much better having it in grown-up writing.
Great overview, thank you! I just got one this week and am absolutely loving it. Just got a bunch of midi cables to hook it up to the other hardware, but like you show towards the end, I could have all done it via USB/Ableton Live (where they're all already connected via USB anyway). That said, the main appeal for using the Delige for me is NOT using Ableton. I stare at a screen 10 hours a day and as much as I love Live, I just don't want to see another screen at the end of the day. That's why I don't even mind the LED (though that OLED retrofit IS tempting!)

Got it since day one and still love it. Mostly I use it as a MIDI sequencer and a quick and dirty drum machine. Firstly I didn't like the synth engine, until the Boards of Deluge soundsets came out, they are a whole different level and I heard the first time, what the synth engine is capable of. Really the only thing that I don't like is the delay, the fact that feedback and amount are coupled makes it really difficult to use and dial in... or am I doing something wrong? ;)
I'm having a lot of fun playing around with the synth engine. I do still find myself sending tracks out via MIDI once I get back in my studio from a sketching session, but I do dig it. Delay is not super precise, but nice that it is by channel or global. Crazy flexibility. Thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to comment!

Using Deluge as a sketching device is how I've been using it. It's so easy to just take it to your lap and start realizing your ideas.
I wish Deluge would make multitrack recording to a daw as easy as Elektron devices (overbridge).

I'm still a bit hesitant because of the 'different' approach it takes.
It feels like I can get lost in more than one place on the Deluge, since it is mostly a bunch of lit up buttons and a 4 characters 'display' to tell you where you are.
I know it has many many shortcuts, but still, I'm quite worried I won't remember a lot of them them and things like patch naming and scrolling with only 4 characters without knowing where you are going (since you don't see the list of patches / menu items etc. etc. )....
Really I want to like it more, but that is a strange design choice if you ask me.
I could be very wrong of course.
I was worried about the same thing, but I was amazed at how intuitive it was. It really is about the buttons and knobs. The screen is just a little help. I would prefer a few more characters, but you quickly shift from using your eyes to using your ears. It feels more like making a patch on a synth than using a DAW.

It’s solid. Very flexible and creative for sound design with all of the different types of synthesis. More than capable. Likely won’t replace my dedicated synths, but best engine I’ve seen in a groovebox by miles.

I have a Moog Matriarch and essentially want to sample & sequence it. I also have a TR6S and wished I could link them all together. I want to play the matriarch in layers also. You know... bass, leads, pads, etc.
I was possibly looking at getting the Squarp Pyramid, and the Octatrack. Sequence on the Pyramid, since it seems super quick for polyrythms and such, then throw that audio into the Octatrack so I can layer everything.
How would you compare the deluge to the Octatrack and maybe the pyramid in terms of immedicey and just general opinion in sequencing & sampling?
Things that appeal to me from the deluge: Sequencer, Polyphony, Sampler
You could sequence and sample with the Octatrack at the same time. If you want something separate, I love my OXI One sequencer. Deluge is a great 'all in one' box, but lots of menus and button combos make it a challenge for deep work. You also might want to look into a 1010 Blackbox for the sample layering side. So you’re using usb connection to not only power the deluge but to also do the midi for the external synthesisers? 🤔 because I see not connections to the midi din sockets.

I think it would depend on the type of music you want to make and how portable you’d want it to be. I love how it has integrated into my full studio, but also how I can take it alone (or with a small synth) on the go. Such a great machine. Thanks for watching!

I love my Minitaur, and the Hydrasynth looks amazing. I was looking at that and the Peak for something more 'modern'. My studio has a lot of warm sounding analog stuff, so I could use some balance. You might want to look at the Digitone. It is the most user friendly way to get some really cool FM sounds that I know. Also, as analog synths go, I think the Minilogue XD is some serious bang for the buck. Thanks for the idea on the studio set up. I will plan a future video around that. Thanks so much for watching!!
does the live looper automatically adjust the start and end points like on the boss rc-505?
I'm not sure actually as I haven't used it much. Check out Ron Cavagnaro's channel. He has a ton of solid in depth Deluge info.
Can it lay out 128 unique samples and lay them out on the sequencer grid? So you can launch live samples by pressing the buttons? I would love to have a way to play a ton of different samples live in real time without requiring a laptop to send midi to it (like a midi controller)
I don't think it can do sample per button, but rather it does sample per channel. The caveat is that there are 'unlimited' channels. They wouldn't all be on the same page, but you could have a ton of individual samples. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
@@SURCOlive thanks man. This was a great overview of the deluge. Could it perhaps do a isomorphic / piano roll mode with multisampling so you could assign a different sample to each fret/piano note, and still end up with a good 30 or 40 samples or so?
That's something Push is very good at. You have 64 pads (each one can be a sample), but you can quickly move between pages of these 64, I think there's 5 pages?
I think the key is that push controls those functions in a computer on Ableton while the deluge and others do it internally. Hoping Ableton comes out with a Push 3 stand alone soon!!! Thanks for watching!
Do you use this to sequence drums on elektron boxes or still use elektron sequencer
I always use the Elektron boxes for drum sequencing. I’ve used the Deluge for melodic sequencing, but now I’m using the OXI One
You missed one. The components are end-user replaceable. This is very rare in the synth industry.

Is there any velocity sensitive pads on it or you have to adjust each step afterward?
They are no velocity sensitive. Since they are so small, people into finger drumming usually just connect a controller, and the Deluge accepts velocity input. Thanks for watching!

is it possible to do loop recording and comp takes? i.e. if i am making a guitar solo and do 3 runs, and want to take the best parts of each of the three takes?
I don't believe it does comp takes. I use the Deluge as a device for getting songs started, then move into Ableton for arrangement and mix/master. It is fantastic as that sketch pad, but not sure it will facilitate finished tracks as you are looking for. Thanks for watching!

@@stringsnare I have. It is very comprehensive and very functional. It is significantly larger and much heavier than the Deluge if that is a concern. It is easier to negotiate with the big screen. My issue with the Force when I tried it out was that for the size, weight, etc, I would rather use a laptop and controller. I love the portability of the deluge as a hardware device and the Force did not have that advantage. I'm having the same issues with the Ableton Push 3 as I test it out, but the actual software is so much more powerful that it makes up for it so far. They are all very different machines that are great at different things. I would suggest dialing in what you want it to do, then shop from there as they all have strengths and weaknesses for different uses.

So, when others limit number of tracks/polyphony - isn't that because of RAM/CPU power? When Synthstrom says Unlimited - isn't that just mean "well, depending on complexity of effects used, synth complexity and polyphony we just can't really say what it would be" ?
Yes and no. They use their RAM/CPU capacity to arrive at their number of tracks/polyphony, and they often build the hardware around this number. Where this is an advantage for the Deluge is that they leave the number of tracks and polyphony up to you and your creative choices. Other companies pick a number without knowing your use. For example sample tracks on the Digitakt or Circuit are limited to a set number of tracks no matter how long or short the sample is or how high or low quality the recording is. All of these have major impacts on RAM and CPU, but you don't have the ability to expand capacity if you opt for a shorter or lower quality sample. With the Deluge, you can strategically use certain samples at lower bit rates or shorter lengths to buy yourself more tracks. From a practical standpoint, I've never hit the track limit when sketching on my Deluge. On my other devices I hit the limit within minutes and begin the process of finding or creating work arounds for them. I love that for sketching the limitations like these stay out of the way (although there are others for sure). It all comes down to personal workflow and priorities. Thanks so much for watching!
As a full featured groovebox, do you prefer this or octatrack?
As a 'Groovebox'- Deluge. As a full featured tool for live performance- Octatrack. For me a groove box is a sketchpad, and the Deluge is amazing for that.

Very familiar with it. Absolutely no comparison to the Octatrack for performing live. It’s not even close. But… I love my deluge for traveling and portable beat making.
I have yet to find a deluge video making good track - Someone please link me. I'm open minded. I want to want this. (no red means recording)
Ok, i appreciate that there are many options in this thing, but what concerns me is: if so much is possible, but there is no screen and little ammount of knobs, I fear the user experience will be tricky (menu diving, shortcuts, etc)?
Very little menu diving, but there are a ton of shortcuts. Virtually every pad is a shortcut and the writing is small. You quickly learn the 5-10 you use all the time and the workflow is actually super fast. I was worried about the same thing but it has not been an issue for my workflow. There are aftermarket overlays that make the shortcuts easier to see if that helps. Thanks so much for watching!

@@tendingtropic7778 not at all! I’m still 100% an Elektron fan for my live performances and studio production! Deluge fits in as my sketch pad. I travel a lot for work and Deluge is perfect to take along to sketch out production ideas on a plane or in a hotel. Then when I return to the studio I easily flesh them out in Ableton or sample them over to Octatrack or Digitakt. For my workflow Deluge is a first step in the production process. My Elektron gear is mainly for dawless performance. This is partly why I’ve been so impressed with Deluge. I didn’t think it would have a place in my workflow but it filled a niche I didn’t know was helpful.

A hardware and memory limited polyphony is limited polyphony. They just didn’t define when notes are going to drop out or get missed. I’d rather just have someone fork over those limits than to tell me it’s limited by hardware.

Very feature packed! The limit has a lot of variables like sample file size (bitrate of the samples). I have never personally found the limit, but my stuff tends to not be super busy. Thanks so much for watching!

I love the portability vs power of the D. But as your midi grid sequencer brain there now are many competitors. Love to hear how your setting on with the D after the honeymoon.
I agree that there are other (and better) sequencers out there. The Deluge is still my go to for portable sketching. I travel a lot for work, and the ability to pull it out anywhere and sketch, then get back in to my studio after the trip and flip all those tracks to midi to integrate with my hardware is great. The Deluge is the embodiment of the saying "A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one." There are devices that do each individual thing better, but I have yet to find anything that has such a complete feature set for my particular workflow that is this size and battery powered. That said, it does not participate much in my day to day studio workflow, and it is not included in my live setup for those same reasons. I have a lot of great specialists for both of those, so I don't need a jack of all trades. Thanks so much for watching!
@@SURCOlive hi Sir. I bought the Deluge to assist me in sequencing other midi gear. For that, I think it does an ok job. The on board sounds and effects are certainly not something to write home about but it is nice that everything is close but abs easy to access. With that said, what would you say is a viable competitor to the Deluge?
@@Romenet310 Hey! It really depends on your use case. For sequencing other gear (if you don't need internal sounds or samples) I love the Oxo One sequencer. If you want an all in one device with a great sequencer that can sequence multiple devices and has good internal sountds too.. you can't go wrong with Elektron. I love the Syntakt as it has 12 tracks that can each be midi tracks for external gear, or can sequence the many internal analog and digital synth engines. If you prefer a sample based workflow with the ability to sequence external gear, the Digitakt is great. 8 internal sample tracks, and 8 dedicated midi tracks for external gear sequencing. The elektron sequencer is the same in both, so you get a ton of power depending on your needs. I hope this helps.

I wish I bought this instead of the OP-1. It's not working for me. I guess it's easy to sell it since it's popular. I think I will buy this after I managed to sell the OP-1
Right there with ya. Sold my OP1 yesterday actually. Powerful little gadget, but it didn’t fit my workflow at all.
keep both… if you can. very different use and fun. Deluge need learning curve and constant use where op1 is just immediately fun
I nearly sold mine. Awful mistake! And update 4.0 just came out. I'm glad that I still have it and it's going nowhere.
perfect everything except you need to use it constantly to remember how it’s work as there is NO SCREEN. just stop two weeks and you will need to look to the 300 page manual… I had it since years but still go down to 40% of capacity if I don’t use it constantly …. please model 2 with a real screen !

@@SURCOlive I can’t think of a better ‘Groovebox’ than the Deluge. It’s so much a ‘jack of all trades’, in a positive way, and the ability to go from loop to groove to full arrangement is unparalleled IMO. The Analog Rytm mk2, and Analog Four mk2 come into their own when I find limitations in the Deluge’s drum or synth sounds, and their workflow is more focussed.
The approachability of the Deluge also makes it a great tool for non tech heads to come up with ideas after minimal tuition. Clients love it, my grandchildren love it, and for me, that is priceless
@@leggzter I’m right there with you on the A4 and the AR. Some of my favorite production tools! I do agree that they all have very different roles in my process. The Deluge seems to have wiggled its way comfortably in to a hole in my workflow that I didn’t think I could fill with one piece of kit. Fits like a glove.

I feel similar about my op-1. More quirky and wish it had an option for more tracks and that powerful sequencer.
But the creativity fueling is there.

I couldn’t connect with the Op-1. Sold after a week. The Deluge had me in 15min and I’ll never get rid of it. It’s my go-to sketch pad for track ideas that integrates right into my studio when I get home. Thanks for watching!
@Light Science I wonder if it is because of the duties charged to import it into your home country. I just emailed the company as they said they would provide an estimate . I order and received items from the UK and the charge was less than $100 on a $4000 purchase perhaps the sellers are passing along the duty? I also have seen sellers charge more for items that take a long time to arrive overseas..not sure how long it takes to receive from NZ perhaps oI also have seen higher or es on reverb as the used items often includes accessories like a storage case, a hard plastic cover, or the button overlay that usually cost about $100 at retail

Here's what he left out... It has severely outgrown its hardware interface and using three button functions...no transition features...and the synth sucks... For what it costs, get an Akai Force instead... It does so much more than the Deluge... Check it out and see for yourself...
