- MOMMA'S RED BEANS & RICE - Not Your Typical
2 teaspoons OLIVE OIL
1 large YELLOW or WHITE ONION, chopped
1 GREEN BELL PEPPER, chopped
4 cloves GARLIC, finely minced
2 pounds HAMBURGER meat
1.5 pounds HICKORY SMOKED SAUSAGE (I use Downhome brand made in Stonwall, La)
1/4 teaspoon SALT
Fresh Ground PEPPER to your taste
2 cans (6oz) (170g) TOMATO PASTE (I used basil, garlic and oregano flavored)
1 teaspoon dried THYME
1/2 teaspoon ONION POWDER
1/2 teaspoon GARLIC POWDER
1/4 teaspoon CAYENNE PEPPER
6 cans (16oz) (454g) PINTO BEANS (I use Bushes Best)
1 can (14.5oz) (411g) BEEF BROTH
In a large 10 quart Dutch Oven or pot add OLIVE OIL on med low heat. Add ONION, BELL PEPPER and GARLIC and saute for 3 to 5 minutes to soften the veggies. In a separate pan cook the sausage rounds until caramelized. Take up and set aside. Add HAMBURGER meat to the pot of veggies and brown. Season with 1/4 teaspoon SALT and fresh ground PEPPER to your taste. Spoon out any grease. (I use lean meat so I don't have to drain) Add TOMATO PASTE, stir and cook for a couple of minutes to deepen the tomato flavor. Add the THYME, GARLIC POWDER, ONION POWDER, and CAYENNE and stir in to mix. Add the PINTO BEANS with their juice, the SAUSAGE and the BEEF BROTH to the pot. Stir and cover. Cook on low for 20 minutes stirring occasionally to make sure it doesn't burn. Serve and enjoy over RICE with a warm piece of buttered cornbread!😊
Amy this looks yummy I will definitely make this. Love your stories about your Mom giving you all chores and about John’s Dad We love you and John
I love how you carry on a conversation while you are prepping and cooking like we, your audience, are in the kitchen with you.😊
I truly feel like you are right there with me. Glad you love it. I love that you enjoy. Thank you for your kindness.
@@amyslouisianakitchen I am responding to your kindness and warmth to your audience. You have the ability to make your audience feel like they are part of your family.
❤️
My mom was the white glove lady. I am the youngest of two girls. I had chores and my older sister did too. One chore wax and polish her wooden floors. My sister had to wax ( my mom had that paste wax) and I had to help polish the floors. Wash the baseboards and window sills. I am glad she taught me how to cook and clean and sew.

Thank YOU for ALL of your hard work and joy for us to watch !! 😊❤
Thank you for sharing this wonderful recipe, Amy!
Looks delicious and easy enough to make, never had this version of red beans and rice, can't wait yo try it.
I grew up on a farm and I miss it, so I love seeing your day to day on your farm. Watching your vlog brings back a lot of memories.
Amy I love to hear you talk. How boring it would be if you cooked in silence. Amy I love the way you never address any negative comments. Not many cooks can do that girl. I think it is very smart to ignore the negative & embrace the position.
Girl it isn’t easy but I try to stay on the positive side of things despite ugliness around us. That is the one thing we can control isn’t it. Thank you so much for your kindness and writing me such a sweet message😊💜💜💜
Hello Amy
I made John’s grandpas cat head biscuits and gravy
Turned out so yummy
I took pictures too 😁
Going to make your meal from this video, we love pinto beans our choice of beans 👍
Thanks again
Brenda
Thank you for this recipe. Its delicious!
I spent some time in Houma and Lockport, Shreveport and Leesville.
You’re so right; y’all have lots o’bugs, for the most part we can see and hear our critters coming!
😅😅😅glad you hear your critters coming😅 ours are sneaky!!😅😅😊💜
THAT LOOKS SO GOOD. AFTER YOU MOVED OVER TO THE STOVE I COULDN'T HARDLY HEAR YOU AND I HAD MY VOLUME ALL THE WAY UP,I LOVE ALL OF YOUR VIDEOS
Love your videos. It may just be me but after you move to the stove the sound went down. Definitely going to make this can't wait to try it.
Can't wait to try this. 😋
So tasty! I am droolin!
Thank you Amy. I’m making this recipe right now.
Yum,simple,,🐎🐎🐎🐎😊🤠can't beat it,"beans!""1
I'll be trying this!
Watching this after breakfast, I made John Murray's Granpa's biscuits. They were really great. I had one with sliced tomato and bacon, another with honey and butter. The Red beans sound good, thanks so much for meal ideas. You know sometimes we get into a rut with the same ol' meals,it's good to have variety, I think ,along with some of the tried and true.
I agree totally!!😊💜
Ma'am I could listen to you all day..I'm from Alabama. Live in PA now I miss the southern women ...and I am gonna make this dish..I learned from my grandma also how to make food
Thank you so much for your kind message 😊💜
I can almost smell that delicious food. I can just tell it was tasty. Thanks for sharing. God Bless
God Bless you too!
Hey I loved that recipe that we couldn't hear you for a little while
I know it Nancy. So sorry. I’m so better next time.
I’ve always put ground beef and smoked sausage in my red beans and rice. Mostly because my husband can never get enough meat! Lol
One time in the summer my son said MOM, I AM BORED TO DEATH !! I was like WOOHOO HERE TAKE THIS BUCKET OF SOAP WATER AND SCRUB ALL THE BASEBOARDS. HE NEVER TOLD ME HEWAS BORED AGAIN !! LOL
😅😅😅I bet he sure was not bored again. Too funny😅😊💜
I must admit it does look delicious
👍yummy .
Miss Ruby
Funny, I had beans & rice for dinner tonight, and this just randomly came up. 😁
That is weird. 😅😊💜I love it though.
Its true. When you switch to the stove, its hard to hear.
I just caught this. I am from Shreveport but I have been in Texas since 84. Cracked me up to see you use Down Home sausage. I used to live in Stonewall where it’s made. I love Down Home sausage. I buy an ice chest full when I go back and visit. What part of La are you in. It’s great to hear you mention Jena. Ha ha. I used to live there in 73/74. Love your recipe. My ex worked for the timber company there. Great recipe. Great watching another La girl do some great cookin🤗🤗
Hey girl. I’m just seeing this message. Thank you so much for sharing this with me. Girl I don’t blame you for getting an ice chest full of that sausage. I have tried others thru the years and have always gone right back to down home brand. It is the perfect amount of fat, spice and smoke. My Aunt had married family in Jena too. They were Hinton’s. It’s a small world really isn’t it?! Thank you for writing me. I really enjoyed hearing from you!!! 😊💜💜💜💜💜
Looks so good! And know it smells wonderful cooking. Love one pot....except the sausage....meals. ❤️
😅😅
I have made it before when I just cooked the sausage snd took it up. Then I cooked the rest of the stuff in that one pot. I was trying to not draw out this video. I love how you referred to it. Made me laugh😊💜
Oh Amy this looks sooooo good!!!! 😋 YUMMY 😋 ❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I love bread and butter pickles!!!
I like this recipe. I always think red beans and rice is too heavy for side dish but not enough for main dish. This version is great for main dish.
Exactly!!😊
Chores help develop work ethics! Kids need to be encouraged to work, it helps them develop creatively and they learn basic survival skills
Yes they do and yes I did!!
My husband makes them the same and adds cut up Irish potatoes to.
Calls them trail ride beans.
He cooks pinto beans tho. Same ingredients you use, but no bell pepper. Sounds so good tho, thank You !!!
Your hubbies beans sounds good too!!!
I couldn't hear you after you moved to the stove.
I love your version of red beans and rice! It may have been said but that part of the video's sound was extremely low on my device. I thought it unusual that pinto beans are used. I would probably prefer it with pintos.
I love them too but they are from my childhood. We tend to love flavors from our past.
Another winner! Amy!! Love that you are thinking “outside the box” when you add to traditional recipes! This looks so good, I know it was delicious!! Please keep these marvelous Southern recipes coming! God bless you, John and family!!
God willing I’m sure gonna keep them coming!!😊💜 thank you for your kindness
I think I’d sneak a little jalapeño in there.
I had never eaten beans and rice..we don’t eat that here in East TN, but when I moved to Shreveport the lady who let me live with them until I got on my feet made regular beans and rice. I rem asking her if it was something everyone in LA ate or a dish she created. She cracked up! I liked it but would have eaten it anyway rather than offend her. Never have seen it made like yours which looked amazing! I think I will try it sometime but will have to leave out the garlic out. I think I’m the only person in the America who can’t handle garlic. You look so pretty this morning as always. Don’t worry about the Amy Police...your fans will handle it for you. 😂 Love you all!
Thank you so much for all your encouragement. I love you too😊💜
Love this recipe I’m going to make ASAP..could you tell me who made the huge pot you’re sautéed the onion and bell pepper in.. I would love to have one of those big ole pots LOL❤️
Thank you so much for your kind comment. I got that pot a few years ago from pampered chef. I’m not sure they have it anymore but they usually have something very similar.
This looks really good! I probably will make half a recipe but this is going on the menu for this com6week. I was thinking about putting it in the crock pot, have you tried that with this recipe?
Also, the sound was almost gone, I had to turn it all the way up and still had a hard time hearing you, not a complaint just letting you be aware 🤔☺️
Made this tonight
I also add celery & bay leaf and ham jocks. I would rather make this with pork shoulder but Mississippi doesn' t know what this is. Have to go to New Orleans for that. I also use smoked sausage and ham. I never heard of putting ground beef in this.
I love that you show us not just tell us
Made it tonight!
Yay!! Now I’m craving some 😅😊💜
Amy the Volume was lost when you changed from chopping to the stove.
Can you please tell us how you fix your rice?
I don't like red beans and your look so good I'm going to try them and make it for my grandson and my husband and daughter to see if I will like it thank you for sharing
You may want to do a voice over since your volume dropped way down.
The sound stopped working adequately once you moved to the stove😔
Mrs. Amy, would you please do shrimp or soft shell crab po boys with a Louisiana roumoulde or aioli sauce?
I sure will. I’ve done a beer fried shrimp Poboy but I’ve been wanting to make a sauce.
I’ll tell you what I just did. I added the shrimp Poboy video in the description box of this red beans and rice video so you can watch it😊💜

THANK YOU ❤️ 🤗🙏
THANK YOU ❤️ 🤗🙏
THANK YOU ❤️ 🤗🙏
Your sound disappeared once you went to the stove ??
My stepdad made these. But he called them cow poke beans. They were delicious! Thank you Amy, I had forgotten about them.
I love that name. Cow poke beans💜
I just ran up on you tonight and I like you, so I will subscribe and hang on for a while. I’m a Tn. Old woman living in S. Florida, I know I am going to love all you cook.
So glad you were able to move to a warm climate. Are you near or on the beach?
@@amyslouisianakitchen we have been here since 1972 , we live 4 miles from the beach. If you ever come to the east coast of Florida let me know and stop by to see me.
Sound went away.
Where did the sound go ??
I dropped my mic off me snd didn’t realize it wasn’t still connected. So sorry.
Now I can hear but barely
Can hardly hear you darlin. I hate that I'm missing your recipe. 🤗
I’ve never had any Popeyes food.
Your not turned on,Amy
Turn volume up
Get on with it !
Sound quit on you
we lost your Sound as soon as you got to the stove.
Volume is gone Amy
Can’t hear you.
I can't hear you!!!
Really ?
1:18
Can't 🙉 you
Your sound went down after you move to stove. We can't here you now by the stove .I love to here you talk so turn up the sound please thank you .
Are you moving hamburgers from one pasture to the other pasture later when you are done cooking? "Hamburger meat" is simply ANY ground meat that is formed into hamburger patties then made into a hamburger which is a type of sandwhich. Beef, pork, chicken, turkey, venison, bison etc, You are cooking with ground beef. NOT "hamburger meat". Its driving me crazy.
😅😅😅
Once again your sound is low.
Your Mike is not picking up very good
We want to see the food you are cooking not your face. Stop going up and down with the camera. Why didn't she plate it so we can see the whole meal plated.
