On the theme of the Indy hat ... my dad was born in 1922 and I was his first daughter and I was born in 1945. As early as I can remember in 1947, my father always wore that Indy hat with the wide brim and the same chestnut color. These style of hats were the costume of the day. He had 3 brothers and a father and they all had the same hats, my grandfather's was black. I have a picture of all of them together and they look like gangsters, but of course they were not. That was the look of the day. Then around 1970's the wide brims went out of style, so did the felt and as much as my father could keep his clean, it began to fall apart and he had to get a narrow brim hat that faked straw. It looked awful. By the time the Indy movies came out and that hat came back to fashion, he was already suffering from ill health and didn't go out much, otherwise I would have gotten him one. Instead, I bought one that imitated Indy's and I wore it myself. It is stunning. I still wear it on occasions and I get the compliments. They all call it my Indy hat. Your collection is excellent. You know so much about all the pieces, it's amazing. Keep up the good work.

I remember seeing Crystal Skull and being frustrated during the waterfall scene and how his hat didn’t react to the water as it did the previous films.
The hat is as much of a character as Indiana Jones is. It’s something that needs to have attention to detail.

    • @joespropsandartifactstour6731
      @joespropsandartifactstour6731  3 роки тому +5

      Thank you for the support.
The Crystal Skull hat is much more of a thicker felt than the Raiders hat.
It's a mixture of a thicker felt and the Director wanting the hat to mostly look Heroic in adverse conditions.
      That's my take on it.
      All my best.

Fantastic collection! A bit of info for you regarding the black disc on the side of the gas mask bag: There is a loop on the opposite side that soliders would tie a cord to and stuff it down in the small side pocket. When they would use the mask, the bag would sit in front of them, causing it flop around when they would run. To prevent this, they would take the cord from the pocket, wrap it around their chest, and then wrap it tightly around the black disc several times to "tie off" the chord. This kept the gas mask bag flat to their torso while they moved about. Also, the gun Indy used in ROTL as a S&W M1917 Hand Ejector II model, .45 - not a .38. Not that anyone would even care - that's a great gun you have and is close enough in my books!

    • @joespropsandartifactstour6731

Thanks for all the info. I had forgotten about the 45, lost in time but thank you for bringing it to the surface, as with other factoids.

The metal disc on the gas mask bags are for a lashing cord that ran out of the inside of the bag, from that tiny pouch in the center, wrapped around the body of the soldier and was then wrapped around the disc multiple times, like you can do with envelopes that have a round (usually red) circle on the outside, to secure them, but so they can also be quickly undone and removed without having to untie the cord.

Love this video and love you collection.
Regarding the SOC and Peru river hat creating the soft Cairo look - the Peru River was filmed after the Streets of Cairo scene. The floppiness, which I absolutely love about the SOC hat, came from overworking the hat, plus the humidity and sweat from Ford. Nadoolman and Ford worked these hats to death before the movie, and as the movie was shooting, which is why the hats have very different characteristics even in the same scenes.
What's interesting to me is: the Peru jungle scenes (filmed in Hawaii), the hat doesn't have a turn. And it's the last sequence of filming the movie. So the didn't this particular hat nearly as much, and didn't get it wet until they filmed the river scene - the last scene of filming production.
As much as I love the SOC hat for being so janky, my favorite is the hat as seen moments after Indy swings across the pit, and hangs the whip. That one little blip of instance in the movie, is Indy Hat perfection. Just dusty enough to look well worn and used, straight crown sides, nice deep tall front bash, pinch isn't too tight, love the swoop of the brim, slight turn, but not too much, and the hat retains it's shape quite well. It's not entirely floppy here. :)

Great gear. You mentioned that you don't know the purpose of the metal disc on the bag. The bag was designed to be worn on the chest for quick acess to the gas mask. The short webbing strap went over the neck. To stabilize the bag, the piece of string that should be in the tiny center pocket was fastened to the tiny loop on the right side, then strung around the wearer's back and wrapped around the metal disc to fasten it.

The disk on the side of the gas mask bag is for winding and tying the string that went around your chest to hold the bag in place. If you look on the opposite side of an original MOD issue Mk VII bag, near the bottom you will find a tiny open pocket barely large enough to insert your little finger where the string was kept and the opposing end secured until actually donning the mask during an attack. Remarkable presentation, interesting how the fascination continues after all these years!

Incredible look! The last one had the best crown, the Indy hat’s crown is almost a 10 gallon 😂 if you ever want one done by the guy who has had every Indy movie hat in his shop call up Baron Hats in Los Angeles and ask for Mark. He shaped and aged most of the hats for the movies and has restored the originals from Raiders. If you go to the shop ask to see the book in the safe, it’s the names and the hat sizes from Harrison Ford to Elvis Presley.

Excellent video mate, there are varying opinions on the length of whip Indy carries, but the general consensus of opinion was that he carried a 10ft, but used an 8ft such as in the Cairo market fight scene, if I’m not mistaken, your crease & coral whip has a steel cable in its construction which would allow you to do swings with it, the guy who made that was Dustin Damrel, im assuming he carried the 10ft because it looks more whip on screen, keep those videos coming 🙂

Hey! I fucking loved this video. Also, I thought I could shed some light on the purpose of the metal wheel on the Mk VII. So originally, that metal piece was used to hold a piece of string. The piece of string was wrapped around the wheel when not in use. In use, the string wrapped around the leg to hold the bag to the wearer. The little loop on the other side of the bag was meant for tying the string to the other side. Anyway, keep up the amazing work! I can’t tell you how fucking refreshing it is to see an IJ cosplayer that actually knows what he’s talking about.

You then redo the center crease & pinches, bearing in mind they will be a little off center with regards to the interior of the hat. Trying to get the "swoop" with a brim that wants to be symmetric won't have the natural looking flare but look overworked

I see now, you are talking about the, "turn". The swoop I refer to is what happens to a hats brim when exposed to extreme wet, the brim will stoop down lower than its manufactured level, which is what the Cairo hat had as well as the turn.

Hello Joe! This video demonstrates your expertise in everything Indiana Jones. I just received my Herbert Johnson Poet model fedora, made with the rabbit fur/felt. This is the same model used in Raiders, as I understand it (unless they used beaver). My issue, which you perhaps could help me with, is stiffening the fedora. It is really, really soft, and can lose its bashing and creasing without much handling. If you have some tips on stiffening, they would be greatly appreciated. Yes, there are lots of hat care tutorials on youtube, but something tells me your experience with this iconic piece of Indiana Jone's wardrobe would be most valuable. Thanks!

The only thing I can suggest is a LIGHT spraying of starch to stiffen it up.
Having said that, I would test it on something first....
To be honest, best not to that, it might make the fibres go funny.
As you are well aware of, the Raiders hat was very soft, softer than many replicas out there. As for how well the original held its shape I do not know.
Ford did seem to be able to mold it into many contours and behind the scenes footage shows the hat ( in my opinion) to be very malleable.
All my best and again- DO NOT try the starch !!!

I have a Cairo hat that I’m constantly applying dirt to and it’s like the felt just purges itself of impurities. You try to keep something clean, and it can’t help but get dirty, but damn, trying to keep something dirty and it can’t help but get clean 😂

Got a lot of info here, however I’m even more unsure of which route to go when getting the pieces. Obviously Alden405 is a no no for me at 600€ per pair, rather adventure boots from Wested it is. Fedora - I’m hoping to get a Herbert Johnson one. Perhaps in Raiders style… The trousers, gun belt etc I’m still undecided. Overall I’d like it to be a bit mix and match.

No one on forums or on the net actually mentions if any of the pants offered by either makers are high waisted trousers as vintage, dress trousers would be fitting. I understand most people don't like high waisted trousers these days, but that's what I'm actually looking for to be accurate. How would you say the Wested pants fit? The annual income of a 1930s -1940s, college professor was not that great. Hence, Indiana Jones was always open to invitations for travel and archaeological digs and treasures. Brilliant video! AFAIK the US military never used Staybrite, which is that nasty aluminium (or whatever it is) the British army used in the 1980s (not sure of the dates it was used). I've seen many US army buckles that were issued coated with a lacquer the soldiers called "QM". Of course the first thing the soldiers would do was apply "QM remover" to get them back to the plain brass, which they would polish with Brasso as they always had done. I think QM remover is sort of like nail polish remover.

Hi, I know I'm a bit late to the party but amazing video! Love the idea of the same jacket all the way through! Can I ask a little advice? I'm looking to get my first Indy fedora and have pretty much decided on Advintage. Herbert Johnson were my original pick but everyone keeps saying Advintage is better quality so I'll trust it. I just can't decide what colour to get, preferably I'd like a mid brown like your ToD hat or the colour seen at the end of the film when they return to the village, mid light brown but not raiders pale. Would you say that the True Sable would meet that or would it be too dark? It's just the pictures on the site vary wildly in colour for true sable so thought I'd ask some advice. P. S Have you seen the new Wested Legacy range?

      @joespropsandartifactstour6731  3 роки тому +2

      Thank you for the support.
When I bought my Indy hats there was no such discovery of true sable, mid Brown, ect, the hats just came in the colour we all thought it was, Sable.
Any fading will happen over time, the sunlight will fade the Dark Brown of the hat to true Sable anyway.
There are a few great private vendors out there..
Screen Capped (Brian Lalonde) and Andrea Tognarelli are the best to go for, as well as Advintage Fedora.
Certainly try those people out for real accuracy and choice.
When it came to Wested I was happy with the Hero jacket.
Now, there is so much more choice to go for.
