  • Few pieces of film history resonate as much with Adam as Indiana Jones costume--the iconic leather jacket and buttoned shirt a defining trait of not only the character but of the pulp adventure genre. One of the production's jackets has resurfaced, giving Adam a chance to see how it was worn and distressed for screen and the surprising weight of the leather.

@@GlitchSystem-xf7jb And some may end up in museums; many collectors loan, some eventually donate, or a museum itself could bid. But even if some pieces enter (or re-enter) a black hole for a time, it’s a double-edged sword; these sales are almost entirely responsible for prompting museums, studio archives, and - very gradually - the general public to finally see enduring value in original props and costumes. If it wasn't for collectors tracking things down and creating a visible market over the past few decades, much of what resides today in museums would have either been tossed or remained boxed up in warehouses/attics. On the whole, these auctions are far more stories of appearances than disappearances.

I was lucky enough to be measured up at Wested Leather by Peter Botwright before his death for a Raiders Jacket - my second one from him. He was so kind and patient with my geek out - and when he learnt I was working in the industry he let me try on the Mad-eye Moody coat he had just got back from Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire. It was one of those epic days that I still remember regularly. I bought my dad a A1 jacket from the patterns used for Memphis Belle that day as well.

Back in the late 80s I bought a jacket like this from the OLD "Banana Republic" (when they were still independent and made good products). Made from goatskin, rather than horse or cowhide. It was very supple and looked naturally aged. Much lighter weight than a pilot's jacket. It's a little worn, but I still have it.

The vertical panels on the shirt are typical of guayaberas. Maybe this design was chosen because, growing up in the American Southwest (or at least his childhood scenes having been filmed there), it's reasonable his fashion choices might be influenced by a type of shirt popular in Mexico.

Love the jacket. I remember about 25 years ago I wanted to rent an Indiana Jones costume. The costume shop wanted 250 to rent, and it was a bomber jacket, not Indy’s. I had the hat from MGM Studios in Orlando. I ended up buying a jacket at Wilson’s leather for under $100. I was in my basement distressing it to look like it did on the VHS cover. I wore a tan shirt, wrinkled, brown pants and some work boots. At the Halloween part on the Intrepid in NYC I got a lot of compliments. I’ll never forget we saw Toby Keith perform at Boo Country Bash. Good times.

After the first film, the producers had no desire to work again with Peter Botwright/Wested Leather who made the jackets, but Noel Howard, at Bermans and Nathans, being a nice man, was able to obscure which supplier the jackets for the 2nd film came from (which was still Wested Leather!) Both men no longer with us, sadly.
Noel Howard had some items from Temple of Doom stored at his flat (shirt, pants, jacket, boots) which were being held for Anthony Powell.

Bermans and Nathans made the Temple of Doom jackets, and they are just slightly different than the originals. They have smaller pockets and buckles instead of D rings on the side straps which face the opposite way than the original. My guess is this will garner $25k - $40k.

A couple of comments about the leather jacket. It's mentioned, with surprise, that the jacket is kind of light. This is actually period-correct. Jackets like this were windbreakers, not necessarily for warmth. This was the case of the Army Air Corps A-1 and A-2 jackets; the wearers would be clothed in wool uniforms and the jackets went over the outside. In contrast, the AAC's shearling jacket, the B-3, had very good insulation.
The second point is about the leather itself. Most of the flying jackets in this period were goatskin or horsehide. Both are VERY durable leathers. However, for a prop jacket, you don't want that! You want something you can easily scuff up to make them artificially aged.

I've wondered about having a different sized wardrobe for the doubles.
But, since Terry Leonard is beefier and taller than Harrison is (I've met Terry twice - once in the 90s on the set of Mighty Joe Young and again on the set of Bird Box, a little before covid hit).
But, since Terry is at least 6'5", and Harrison is 6'2" one would assume the doubles get their correctly sized wardrobe, too.

It really IS an adrenaline rush to screen match something. I own a piece of original pre-cell sketch art from the 1990s Masters of the Universe cartoon that is Teela solo, nothing else. During the Q & A, I asked Adam why they (Myth-Busters team) blew up buster in Bye Bye Buster, to where I remarked on how Adam cos-played Indiana Jones on the show and quoted a line from last Crusade for which he said at the same time "It belongs in a Museum" Jinx (Neither he or me called it). He explained that it was required for the story. Sad for Buster but good enough explanation. And not a day after Fan-Expo he releases the video of Indiana Jones Jacket. Just luck of the draw timing. what would I use?... well bookbinder glue A it's acid-free and reversible and it stays flexible and to fix it in place? a mild hot iron (with mild I mean warm not scolding hot) you will see the damage but it is stable like it needs to be.

Growing up, I had a shirt with that kind of vertical panel crossing the shirt pockets. It was just a white shirt, no relation to the movie, but it did the same thing of breaking the bottom line of the pocket - and on mine it wasn't sewn correctly so the pocket basically had a hole down into that long panel. I think it was just a style in the early 80s. I wouldn't be too surprised if this was an off the shelf pick for the first film.

At about 3:41 into the video, the jacket has what looks like 3 tacks poking through the back of the left shoulder. Anyone know what that is? Thanks!

Maybe those vertical strips of fabric on the Last Crusade Indy shirt were sewn in to hide a wire rig or other SFX setup?

Adam is so tactile a person, you can see him practically bursting while he restrains himself from touching the pieces. It has to be so tempting.
