      @@GlitchSystem-xf7jb And some may end up in museums; many collectors loan, some eventually donate, or a museum itself could bid. But even if some pieces enter (or re-enter) a black hole for a time, it’s a double-edged sword; these sales are almost entirely responsible for prompting museums, studio archives, and - very gradually - the general public to finally see enduring value in original props and costumes. If it wasn't for collectors tracking things down and creating a visible market over the past few decades, much of what resides today in museums would have either been tossed or remained boxed up in warehouses/attics. On the whole, these auctions are far more stories of appearances than disappearances.

    I was lucky enough to be measured up at Wested Leather by Peter Botwright before his death for a Raiders Jacket - my second one from him. He was so kind and patient with my geek out - and when he learnt I was working in the industry he let me try on the Mad-eye Moody coat he had just got back from Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire. It was one of those epic days that I still remember regularly. I bought my dad a A1 jacket from the patterns used for Memphis Belle that day as well.

    Back in the late 80s I bought a jacket like this from the OLD "Banana Republic" (when they were still independent and made good products). Made from goatskin, rather than horse or cowhide. It was very supple and looked naturally aged. Much lighter weight than a pilot's jacket. It's a little worn, but I still have it.

      Wested Leather is the company that made the jackets for Ford in the film's (they renamed themselves to Wested in like the mid 90s) and they were all goat and lamb skin. Phenomenal Leather.

    Love the jacket. I remember about 25 years ago I wanted to rent an Indiana Jones costume. The costume shop wanted 250 to rent, and it was a bomber jacket, not Indy’s. I had the hat from MGM Studios in Orlando. I ended up buying a jacket at Wilson’s leather for under $100. I was in my basement distressing it to look like it did on the VHS cover. I wore a tan shirt, wrinkled, brown pants and some work boots. At the Halloween part on the Intrepid in NYC I got a lot of compliments. I’ll never forget we saw Toby Keith perform at Boo Country Bash. Good times.

    A couple of comments about the leather jacket. It's mentioned, with surprise, that the jacket is kind of light. This is actually period-correct. Jackets like this were windbreakers, not necessarily for warmth. This was the case of the Army Air Corps A-1 and A-2 jackets; the wearers would be clothed in wool uniforms and the jackets went over the outside. In contrast, the AAC's shearling jacket, the B-3, had very good insulation.
    The second point is about the leather itself. Most of the flying jackets in this period were goatskin or horsehide. Both are VERY durable leathers. However, for a prop jacket, you don't want that! You want something you can easily scuff up to make them artificially aged.

    • @bbb462cid
      @bbb462cid 8 днів тому

      Yes, correct. I have three Cooper A2s and they are literally _summer weight_ jackets. Great windbreakers and great when layered, but certainly not for warmth on their own.

    The vertical panels on the shirt are typical of guayaberas. Maybe this design was chosen because, growing up in the American Southwest (or at least his childhood scenes having been filmed there), it's reasonable his fashion choices might be influenced by a type of shirt popular in Mexico.

    Adam is almost exactly a month older than me (July 15 and August 17 1967) and there’s something warming to my heart about thinking of almost 14 yo me and almost 14 yo Adam sitting in a theater seeing Raiders for the first time. Adam, this is perfect timing. Last week Adam graciously came up to Vancouver Canada for Fan Expo. Adam like always was wonderful to all the attendees. During the Q & A, I asked Adam why they (Myth-Busters team) blew up buster in Bye Bye Buster, to where I remarked on how Adam cos-played Indiana Jones on the show and quoted a line from last Crusade for which he said at the same time "It belongs in a Museum" Jinx (Neither he or me called it). He explained that it was required for the story. Sad for Buster but good enough explanation. And not a day after Fan-Expo he releases the video of Indiana Jones Jacket. Just luck of the draw timing. Hope you have a good trip in London and thank you very much for coming to Vancouver.
    PS. hope you enjoyed the 3D pictures of you on Season 3 of the Expanse.

    I own a Raiders jacket made by the same clothier in England that made them for the first film. Bermans and Nathans made the Temple of Doom jackets, and they are just slightly different than the originals. They have smaller pockets and buckles instead of D rings on the side straps which face the opposite way than the original. My guess is this will garner $25k - $40k.

  • @glennwallace9203

    After the first film, the producers had no desire to work again with Peter Botwright/Wested Leather who made the jackets, but Noel Howard, at Bermans and Nathans, being a nice man, was able to obscure which supplier the jackets for the 2nd film came from (which was still Wested Leather!) Both men no longer with us, sadly.
    Noel Howard had some items from Temple of Doom stored at his flat (shirt, pants, jacket, boots) which were being held for Anthony Powell.

    Growing up, I had a shirt with that kind of vertical panel crossing the shirt pockets. It was just a white shirt, no relation to the movie, but it did the same thing of breaking the bottom line of the pocket - and on mine it wasn't sewn correctly so the pocket basically had a hole down into that long panel. I think it was just a style in the early 80s. I wouldn't be too surprised if this was an off the shelf pick for the first film.

    But, since Terry Leonard is beefier and taller than Harrison is (I've met Terry twice - once in the 90s on the set of Mighty Joe Young and again on the set of Bird Box, a little before covid hit).
    But, since Terry is at least 6'5", and Harrison is 6'2" one would assume the doubles get their correctly sized wardrobe, too.

    normally I would leave an icon like this untouched but the broken repair irks me it needs to be restored to screen accurate it is a degrading bit that will keep on degrading so it needs to be fixed.
    what would I use?... well bookbinder glue A it's acid-free and reversible and it stays flexible and to fix it in place? a mild hot iron (with mild I mean warm not scolding hot) you will see the damage but it is stable like it needs to be.

    For some reason I found it slightly disappointing to learn that the Indy jacket is light. I got obsessed with leather jackets because of Indy, love a good, heavy leather jacket, surprising and a little "huh, well" about it being lightweight

    The only scene I ever had a problem with in raiders was when Indy swaps the idol for a bag of dirt,and is surprised when he still sets off the booby trap. Really Indy? You thought ten ounces of dirt would do the trick? That idol head probably weighs 10 pounds! I guess the university where Dr Jones teaches does not have an elective on weights and measures.

    Now I know why the jacket looked so cool on Indy, but the replica Disneyland was selling at the Adventureland Bazaar across from the Temple of the Forbidden Eye attraction didnt look cool on me. Im not Harrison Ford. Oh, and the Disney replica was crafted for durability. Not a stunt jacket.

    • @k2sworld
      @k2sworld 10 місяців тому +4

      A company called, Leather Concessionaires, made the jackets for the first film. That later became Wested. Bermans and Nathans made them for Temple of Doom, using one of the originals as a template/pattern, but they aren't exactly the same.

    Striated lambskin? Goat is "pebbly", cowhide is heavier.Lamb is soft and might explain how shredded that sleeve got.
