Wolfgang Petersen came to fame by directing the highly acclaimed "Das Boot" (1981); one of the best submarine movies ever made! After that the doors to Hollywood were open to him! 🙂
Looking forward to this! It sometimes seems like this is a somewhat forgotten film from the 90s, but it’s a near-masterpiece on the back of Malkovich’s truly remarkable performance.
Great performances. Really nice reaction too Coby. The Secret Service does do other things. In fact theey were initially formed to combat counterfeitting, and I believe they are (or for a long time were) a part of the Treasury Dept. Malkovich is amazing. Don't know if you saw it but he was hysterical in Red. He also was strong in a very small part in the movie Rounders. Coby, don't know if you have seen The Sting with Paul Newman and Robert Redford and so many fine actors, but it is a really entertaining movie too. Stay safe and well!!
He was also the VP of the toy company that didn't like the Tom Hanks character in the comedy film "Big" (1988). John Heard was also John Pierce in the film "Beaches" (1988) and he was also in the film "Radio Flyer" (1992). All told he had 182 acting credits to his name before he died in 2017.
Lovely reaction! I had no idea this movie was still roaming around as interesting, but I am well pleased. I loved the film when it came out, and rewatching it a few months ago, I found myself still enamored with it. It reminds me of the best parts of The Day of the Jackal (the original), with a new and modern take (not to mention location and background). Not that I like it as much, and it is entirely different, but you might like "Bridges of Madison County", and it is quite a different movie which might show you that he has depth too.
I've always loved this one. I must say, you've got the sweetest smile I have ever seen! Very smart as well! I enjoyed re-watching thru your eyes! Great reaction!
"I thought the Secret Service just protected the president." They're agents of the US Department of the Treasury. While, ironically, their most visible role is the protection and investigation of threats against the safety of the current and former presidents, vice president and their families, as well as candidates/nominees for those positions and their spouses, they also protect foreign heads of state and their families while visiting, plus events designated as in need for special security by the Secretary of Homeland Security. On top of that, they are the enforcement arm of the Department of the Treasury. They investigate activities such as counterfeiting and cybercrime.

Amazing film. Thanks for the review. I saw it in the theater back in the day and it's still one of my faves. Highly underrated IMO. FYI, The Nick of Time was filmed in the same hotel as the final act of this film (the Bonaventure is a nice hotel and iconic due to several films).
Great reaction to a great movie! Clint is an icon as both an Actor and Director. Of all the oldies, westerns and Dirty Harry stuff are a must see. But one that showcases his Directorial talent is "Sully" about the Miracle on the Hudson, starring Tom Hanks. A true story, which Eastwood handles very well as Director.
Love this film and your reaction to it was amazing. I'm another one who saw this at the cinema and still remember being blown away by it. You said you've seen all of his more recent films? Does that include "The Mule"? I think you'll love it if you haven't seen it.

Wolfgang Petersen also directed "Shattered" two years before this movie. That is a terrific suspense thriller starring Tom Berenger and Bob Hoskins. That is definitely something you would like. He also directed "Air Force One" with Harrison Ford in 1997.
Shattered still has the lowest movie profile, highest WTF rug-pull of all time in a Who Done It murder mystery thriller. It's an uneven film that's taken from a thin pot boiler novel with an exceptional million dollar plot twist. The film adaptation's screenplay didn't quite solve the central key creative issue when translating book to screen of this particular big secret reveal the whole story hinges on and reality is the whole 90 minute runtime is running in place delayed gratification because the entire premise is the twist so the whole middle section of the movie is padded and doesn't move the plot forward which even a great director like Wolfgang Peterson can only do so much to keep things interesting, and the film looks stunning and visually breathtaking, but is dull without forward plot propulsion. It's a testament to the power of that twist that it's so Earth shatteringly mind blowing, it stays with you long after you've seen the movie. One shot Inparticular. THEE shot. It's the reveal moment and it's up there with the reveal of Rosebud in Citizen Kane and last image table turn fake out moment to end the original Planet Of The Apes. But, this gangbuster cracker jack of a mind f*ck is unfortunately inside what looks like all these decades later, the best directed and shot Academy Award winning looking 90's cable TV movie of the month on Skinamax.
One of my favorite Eastwood movies! Wolfgang Peterson directed this one. I love John Mahoney. Two other movies that he's in that I like are Frantic with Harrison Ford (1988) and The Russia House with Sean Connery, Michelle Pfeiffer and Roy Scheider (1990). Another Clint Eastwood movie I enjoy is the 1971 psychological thriller Play Misty For Me. Great reaction!
Great reaction, as always, Coby! Fantastic movie and glad it is in your library now! Your reaction to Bum/hippy Malkovitch made me laugh aloud and think a ref! In that scene when he runs...I swear he is the model for Joe Dirt many moons later 😄
My favorite song on the soundtrack for this movie is Herman Hupfeld as time goes by. Watching this on laser disc in 1993 was a bit better than the normal VHS version of the movie.
Wolfgang Petersen is originally from Germany. In addition to this 1993 film, he has directed movies as widely varying as Das Boot (1981, in German), The Neverending Story (1984), Air Force One (1997), and The Perfect Storm (2000).
Such an excellent film and with such great actors in it too. I wish they made more of these films nowadays. Glad you enjoyed it and if you like the tense kind of dramas and thrillers, please watch A Few Good Men. Its amazing ! Simon ( fron Wales) xx
If you would like to see an "approximate" measure of John Malkovich's brilliance do watch Stephen Frears' 1988 masterful "Dangerous Liasons", also with Glenn Close, Michelle Pfeiffer and the impossibly young Uma Thurman and Keanu Reeves, it is not possible to see it just the once. Malkovich is absolutely delightful as a person, quirky and fascinating, makes you feel you could listen to him forever.
Peterson is a master director. One of the top 100 films u could ever watch is Das Boot, in German with English subtitles. And the serious mind bender, Shattered! A crime thriller!
5:15 A lot of people don't realize that the USSS was actually originally founded in 1865 to combat counterfeiting. At the time, about a third of US currency in circulation was believed to be counterfeit; Uncle Sam don't play that shit, so a commission was established (signed into law by Lincoln hours before he was assassinated, coincidentally) to figure out what to do to police & suppress counterfeiting. As a result of that commission's findings, the USSS was founded in July of 1865. Presidential Protection Details didn't come along until after William McKinley was assassinated in 1901.
Wolfgang Petersen was an incredibly underrated director, I always thought, sadly passed away just under a few years ago now. Directed "Das Boot" and "The Perfect Storm", among others. Always thought he should have done more projects but appreciate the legacy he left behind. I'm sure I recall reading somewhere that Petersen thought this was the best screenplay he'd ever read, which I thought was very telling. The script was also passed around Hollywood for about 10 years before it was finally sold for about a million dollars, give or take, depending on where you read. The scene where Eastwood recalls the assassination at night was slightly improvised in a way, according to what I've read, as Petersen asked Rene Russo to hold his hand right at that moment which Eastwood wasn't expecting, and apparently the tears were genuine because of that. Overall, It turned out incredibly well and I think Malkovich is an actor who should be utilized more in a way too, always turns in interesting stuff. I think this was his shining moment as an actor although hopefully, he'll do something else equally as memorable sometime in the future. Great reaction to a film with great atmosphere, performances, and pacing.
Easily my favorite John Malkovich role i've ever seen. Even if Clint is magnificent at all times, Malkovich is SO good in this. It's almost like a battle of acting when they're together.

Just FYI: The US Secret Service was a branch of the Treasury Department. In 2003 they became part of Homeland Security. Their prime function is enforcing monetary law (counterfeiting, etc.). In1901 they were assigned the added duty of protecting the President, his family, former presidents, presidential candidates, and other dignitaries.
1:01:43 Il vous faut absolument voir, si ce n'est déjà fait, "Play Misty for me" (1971), produit, interprété et réalisé par Clint. Un thriller haletant sur fond de Jazz. Pur chef-d'oeuvre. Inratable.
I have always been surprised that Rene Russo didn't have a bigger career - she is gorgeous, funny and convincing in action roles (for example in the Lethal Weapon movies). She's a great counterpoint to Clint in this and she's also excellent in the modern version of The Thomas Crown Affair (with Pierce Brosnan), a very slick and fun heist movie.
Ine of the big reasons she didnt have a bigger career is becuz she didnt start acting until she was 34-35yrs old. Before that she was a model... She had a pretty successful acting career for how late she started...
The fact that Coby has watched Absolute Power but not In The Line of Fire is shocking. Absolute Power is a much much lesser known movie. In The Line of Fire is one of his best movies.
This was one of the big hits of the summer of 1993, and yes, making $100 million was a big hit for just about any movie then, especially an adult-oriented crime thriller giving a look at an agency we didn't see in many movies. Now, this kind of thing is in every other TV series. I can't evaluate how some see it as "forgotten" or "obscure" or whatever now to younger people but then, it was heavily marketed and one of the top anticipated movies that summer. Rene Russo was coming off her popular role in "Lethal Weapon 3" the year before and it was Eastwood's first movie after "Unforgiven."
Another great (but very different) Dylan McDermott movie is Home for the Holidays (1995). It’s set during Thanksgiving but it’s great anytime of year. The cast is a fantastic ensemble, also having Holly Hunter and Robert Downy Jr. Lots of awkward and twisted humor. And it’s directed by Jodie Foster.
Great reaction!!! I've always loved this movie, but there really isn't a Clint Eastwood movie that I don't love. I'm dreading the day when he is no longer around.
This is a great movie. Haven't seen it in years though, so it was nice to rewatch it with Coby. A similar movie I think you'll like starring Bruce Willis and Richard Gere is "The Jackal". Another more light hearted one to watch is "The Saint" with Val Kilmer and Elisabeth Shue.
yea great fun thriller / political stuff and rene russo was 34 and Clint 63 as hes 94 now. He certainly looked like a fit older ss agent and just a good re watchable film. WOW Coby was so invested in Clint's character I didnt see the tears coming, One thing is when did he have thought to get a bullet proof vest, but thats a good ending for a great film hero in this one

Was about to go to bed and saw you were reacting to this. Sleep is for the weak, it was worth it. Night.
I was staying in the hotel where and when they filmed the final showdown. It was a fun experience for pre-teen me
Coby is Her!! This reaction is fire 🔥🔥🔥
I recall the movie " The International" with Clive Owen having a good roof top chase
Great reaction, Coby! Gary Cole was the SSAIC, and Bob Lumberg , and the VP Bingo Bob in West Wing after Tim Matheson’s John Hoynes. Now he’s on NCIS.
Thanks, Coby!!! Another AMAZZZZZZZING reaction.
You're the best!
Such an excellent film and with such great actors in it too.
I wish they made more of these films nowadays.
Glad you enjoyed it and if you like the tense kind of dramas and thrillers, please watch A Few Good Men. Its amazing !
Simon ( fron Wales) xx
Such a good movie, and your reaction was awesome as always. *high-fives*
Thank you!! 😁
Leary: "You want to save me Frank?"
Frank: "To be honest and fair with you; no."
Favorite line in the movie.
Wolfgang directed Das Boot. About a German U-boat crew in WWII. If you thought this was rough to watch Das Boot is tough but incredible.
Clint was 62-63 in this film. Clint stayed in shape, and did a lot of running in private life, and on film.
IIRC, he was also famous for running with his dogs (dobermans?) and popping tennis balls in his bare hands.
Hi Coby, love your reaction to this movie. Hope your keeping well, take care👍.
Thank you !
You’re most welcome😎. You have a lovely day👍.
Best acting scene involving 2 actors talking to each other on the phone ever! (at 1:02:55)
I just noticed your E.T. coffee mug! Love it!
Coby needs to get in touch with Dylan for a guest role on "FBI - Most Wanted".
Coby is the best reactor 😂
They look like dinosaur chicken nuggets."
🤣 🤣 🤣
Thats awesome. Lol
Easily my favorite John Malkovich role i've ever seen. Even if Clint is magnificent at all times, Malkovich is SO good in this. It's almost like a battle of acting when they're together.
Coby is reacting to many great movies! Excellent job!
it's from you guys! the subs and fans comments, mixed with what we think she'll love - but mostly we try to be quality movie channel with the best recommendations going through
@@criminalcontent the early spaghetti westerns you will love FISTFUL OF DOLLARS, FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE and THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY. They all have two release dates one being Italian the other American. Then Dirty Harry series starts in 1971! Here we go! 🎥 👍🏻
Inratable.
I hope you see this! If you haven't seen the movie, absolute power, another great Clint eastwood movie.
She had a pretty successful acting career for how late she started...
criminally good Clint:
"The Eiger Sanction" (1975)
"Dirty Harry" (1971) & 4 sequels
"Tightrope" (1984)
The fact that Coby has watched Absolute Power but not In The Line of Fire is shocking. Absolute Power is a much much lesser known movie. In The Line of Fire is one of his best movies.
The lady landlord also had a part on the TV show, Wiseguy with Ken Wahl
Wolfgang Petersen directed Air Force One and The Perfect Storm. He also directed the German film, the submarine epic, Das Boot.
Malkovich simply amazing here.. chilling!
Couldn't agree more!
Coby fanclub checking in! ;)
Lumbergh! To me, he'll always be Cotton McKnight, Dodgeball commentator extraordinaire.
yea great fun thriller / political stuff and rene russo was 34 and Clint 63 as hes 94 now. He certainly looked like a fit older ss agent and just a good re watchable film. WOW Coby was so invested in Clint's character I didnt see the tears coming, One thing is when did he have thought to get a bullet proof vest, but thats a good ending for a great film hero in this one
