I've been a huge fan of all 3 series since I was a kid, mostly thanks to watching my dad play. So when I heard "Sam and Gabe" in MGS3 I was super excited. Syphon Filter is criminally underrated.
Konami didn't write mgs4 they published it, Hideo Kojima wrote it and it disrespected the entire series and retconned it same as MGSV though the gameplay in mgsv was amazing. ✌️💜

At the very beginning of MGS1 Colonel Campbell says that he pulled Solid Snake out of his retirement, which primarily was enjoying life in Alaska dog sledding and stuff, in order to go to Shadow Moses and stop Liquid Snake, so maybe before Shadow Moses as Solid wasn't an "Army Infiltration" soldier after that and instead being more regarded to Spec Ops/Black Ops. The other possibility is after the end of MGS4, where (and here's some spoilers for an old game) old man Big Boss tells Solid to just go. Live his life the way he wants to. That he doesn't need to fight anymore. From there, Solid isn't heard from again.
They formally adopted Solid, Liquid and eventually Solidus after MGSV. The three of them became legendary war heroes. No nuclear weapon was used ever since.
