Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked is a 2011 American live action/computer animated musical family comedy adventure film directed by Mike Mitchell. It is the third installment in the Alvin and the Chipmunks film series following the 2009 film Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, which was a sequel to the 2007 film Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Apparently David Cross despised this film mostly just because one of the producers was needlessly cruel to him, giving him a run down trailer and just going out of their way to make the experience unpleasant. Sounds awful. His one positive note is that apparently "He takes some small solace in the fact that a number of parents have told him that he made an otherwise miserable film tolerable to watch for them."
According to NBC News, David Cross did not believe it was necessary for him to be present during the week of filming aboard a Carnival cruise ship for Alvin and the Chipmunks 3: ChipWrecked, as he felt he was unrecognizable in the pelican suit. Director Mike Mitchell and the other producers were in agreement that a stand-in could take his place for that portion of filming, except for one specific producer he mentioned who disagreed.
David was fined $150,000 for disclosing this information publicly. In response to the fine, he made an appearance on Conan in January 2012, where he expressed that ChipWrecked was the most unpleasant experience he had encountered in his professional career and advised against supporting the film. This incident had a negative impact on his career. Despite his frustration, David acknowledged the success and recognition he gained from his work with the Chipmunks, surpassing his own creative endeavors. He later apologized for his outburst the following day, clarifying that Janice Karman did not mistreat him.
Despite the controversy, ChipWrecked managed to earn $398 million globally. Ian Hawke, the former record executive turned screenwriter, was excluded from Alvin and the Chipmunks 4: The Road Chip due to this event. Following the fallout, no major film studio, apart from Honora Productions, BitTorrent, and UA-cam, agreed to distribute Hits, David's directorial debut, after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2014. Alvin and the Chipmunks 4: The Road Chip went on to generate $251 million worldwide in December, 2015.
By June 2024, David's career had dwindled to small roles in Kung Fu Panda 3, The Post, Sorry To Bother You, 8-Bit Christmas, and You Hurt My Feelings. He also made occasional guest appearances on television shows such as The Heart, She Holler, Goliath, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Genius. Karen Rosenfelt, the producer David accused of mistreatment and antisemitism, quit 20th Century Fox in June 2016 following the release of Me before You. She has since been involved with Amazon Prime Video as a producer for The Summer I Turned Pretty since June 2022. Mike Mitchell also confirmed that The Furious Five will be reduced to cameo appearances in Kung Fu Panda 4. It's disappointing that Tony Hale couldn't help David reconcile with 20th Century Fox to get his job back in February, 2015.

When comedian and actor David Cross took a role in “Alvin and the Chipmunks,” he received endless criticism from fans used to the alterna-comic’s anti-authoritarian stance. His memorable response suggested he was aware of how it looked, but hey, kid movies pay the bills. Well, it's four years later, and Cross is appearing in "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked" opening this weekend. "I’m contractually done," he said during press rounds for his television show "The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret." "I was contractually obligated to do three, which is kinda standard." But now his outlook on the work is considerably less positive.
"This last film was literally, without question, the most unpleasant experience I’ve ever had in my professional life," he says of 'Chip-Wrecked,' where he reprises his role of record executive Ian. Without naming names, he says, "It’s safe to say I won’t be working with some of those people ever again. Not the actors. And the director [Mike Mitchell] was great. We got along. There were a couple of people, though…it was just a really awful, unpleasant experience." Which isn't to say the entire 'Chipmunks' experience has been rotten for him.
