The original story of Mulan ended with the mongels invading and her committing suicide rather than be gang raped and live as a slave. If I remember correctly
@@josephwatkins1190 You remember kind of right, but not really, the ending you are talking about is the Suit Tang romance ending, but that ending is a later invention, the original ending that appears in older poems is pretty happy and very similar to the one in the original Disney movie, she got offered a position as a concubine (sometimes another position), sherefuses and ask only for a orse or camel to go back to her village, her family embraces her, she comes back to dress as a woman, they celebrate and invite all her army buddie, which are shocked to know she is a women and joke about how they did not notice in 12 years.
@@josephwatkins1190 Isn't Mulan supposed to be much earlier. The Mongol conquest is in the 13th century and she fought the huns in the first movie and I think they disappeared in china before they showed up in europe when the western roman empire was still there. To be fair its not even so clear if the huns were from there as we only have writen sources by the people around them like the chinese and romans and they didn't pay much attention to the actual tribes and tended to call a whole bunchof them with the same name.
If it is supposed to be a stink badger ( benefit of doubt, etc ) it "just" had to swim maritime asia. It would also be the kind of animal restricted to a specific set of islands because they have no other choice. Even if a merchant had imported one, it would show up in a fancy resturant, not hunting an adult human through an enviroment that could easily kill it.
I remember the dvd trailer for this movie. It stated "Mulan will have to choose between her duty and her heart." I genuinely thought she was the one who was going to be married off for political reasons. And she'd have this complex conflict over wanting to marry Shang and marrying a stranger to save her country. That would have been way more interesting than this mess. And my god, what did they do to Shang's beautiful face???
I agree. It would have been better and cause a real rift between them instead of Mushu doing childish things. Shang wasn’t that handsome but here he’s fugly.
Honestly agree. Trash movie. The ONLY thing it got right was the raw emotion from Mulan when Shang fell. I actually cried, caught up in the intense emotion, despite knowing its Disney and he's not dead.
Brittney Lester girl same!! The voice acting is amazing and the scene right after when she plunges the sword in the rain gets me every time. Why such an emotionally well done scene was in THIS movie I’ll never know 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️
They did get that right I agree. Ming Na Wen, the voice of Mulan, even cried doing that scene and so did her mother. So it makes total sense why that scene had so much emotion.
Was Mulan really all that concerned with "the heart" in the first movie? Wasn't the whole point of the first movie that she sacrificed her own wants for the sake of her family?
Actually she herself admitted toward the end that maybe she didn't just come for her father maybe she did come for herself. Maybe she wanted to prove she could be worth something and do things right. So no. Even when she wanted to do right by her family she was still thinking about herself and that's not bad.
Private Walnut *Mushu, and yes I believe so according to the rumors. Here’s my prediction: Mulan is a strong independent woman who is never listened to and disobeys her father to join the army. She’s a complete badass with little training and kicks ass on the battlefield as an obvious woman with her helmet off with a tiny Dragon as a pet/spirit guide who will save her at just the right moment. I doubt Shen would even approach her for a relationship and probably will be trained by her somehow. How’s that Disney? Am I in the park yet you greedy pricks?!
Private Walnut they want a more “historical correct” movie. Because that is what made the original Mulan film good, not the wise cracking Eddie Murphy Dragon, best training song since Eye of the Tiger or comedy
The closest thing to a skunk in Asia, let alone the Old World, would be the stink badgers...that live on islands far away from mainland China. There are Old World porcupines...who, in the case of Asia, live on the same islands as the stink badgers. The grey squirrel is New World.
*facepalm* Shang threw a _shuriken._ A Chinese soldier threw a shuriken, literal _centuries_ before they were invented...in JAPAN. ..."Because Asian", I guess. *fuuu-*
@@eldermillennial8330 I can not answer your question for sure but the fact many of the Japanese and Korean weapons and militarized culture orginated, inspired and were influenced from and by China, I would not be suprised Chinese throwing stars existed before. However, it seem the Japanese took extra steps with throwing stars and advanced more with it.
Being a princess doesn't sound too great from a more adult perspective. In more progressive societies you're prepared from birth to be a government official, and in traditional societies (what most Disney movies take place in) you are groomed to be sold or traded for diplomatic deals! Think about it, princesses were just bargaining chips! But little girls really want the title and status associated with it, as it comes with an awesome palace/castle and a walk-in closet filled with pretty, extravagant dresses. This isn't even an opinion, it's an empirical fact! Disney made MILLIONS off of dress and costume sales after Frozen alone!
Well to be perfectly honest if i had to be in literal actual medieval times being a princess would be nice sure i would probably be treated like shit by my husband but at least i wouldn't be drinking water filled with shit
Declan McKenna the Disney Universe was going to get destroyed regardless or not if Sora interfered with other worlds that aren’t his because of the fact that Xehanort was going to destroy the Disney Universe regardless of Sora helped them or not, so it only makes things better that Mulan having the same dialogue in Mulan 2 as Sora does all throughout the Kingdom Hearts video games.

“All those problems..they weren’t us; THEY WERE YOU!” No hun, you’re projecting. Honestly if that was all it took to break them up I’m p r e t t y sure they’re not right for each other. That’s literally my entire thought process throughout the whole movie. Plus Shang was right the entire time??? Like you’re risking millions of peoples lives so that these princesses can marry some men they met 3 days ago??? That most likely will get bored of them in a year at most.
Not only that, but they are princesses. Now they married common men, so they won’t keep their titles and have to actually work for a living, something they’ve never done. They where complaining about pinchy shoes, which I guess might be an allusion to foot binding? Which I’m not sure of on there. But news flash a lot of women where subjected to that and also had to work the field! I’m so annoyed by this movie! I completely agree with you.
Yeah how come that corny first grade storytelling bullshit gets rightfully panned here, but is hailed as fantastic and touching moments in KH? I love the games, but god damn does the writing range from corny to shitty.
"Aren't there rules?" "Of course, right next to the rules about dressing up like a man and joining the army - by the way, you're still slated for execution." Nice reference to one of the not-so-nice endings from the original myth XD
It was not a myth, but a Ballad. The one I read she was accepted i to the army due to still being a good soldier. She was also called to the Palace and offered the chance to be his Concubine. Which is actually quite a high honor in China, as Chinese Concubines were much closer to actual wives then they were in the West
@@blankblank1284 From what I recall, there were at least two different ending variations - the one you just described (although she committed suicide in that one) and one in which she was executed for impersonating a man. I *think* there might've been a third variant where she lived but my memory is a bit fuzzy on that.
Actually, in the oldest version of the ballad, she simply goes home and then reveals to her most trusted comrades that she was a woman all along, with zero repercussions; en.wikisource.org/wiki/Translation:Ballad_of_Mulan It was only in the later versions that they added in the parts of her being chosen as a concubine and committing suicide or being executed. Same. It wasn't just that the sequel missed the entire point of the first movie, its like the writer deliberately tried to go against everything the first movie said about courage and responsibility while also insulting it.
Supposedly there was a third movie plan that was supposed to deal with the consequences of the second movie but i think Disney scrapped due to how dark it is

@Surya Singh While the Japanese writing system does borrow Chinese characters, they have their own 'alphabet'-type system (2, technically). Generally, if most of the characters are written with just 1 or 2 lines (like counting pen strokes), then it's probably Japanese. Also, Japan uses English words much more often than China, mainly due to it being a mandatory second language, so that's another hint.
@Surya Singh you would think that they made sure to actually get it right since it is someone's culture and they are two separate cultures. Might just be a little bit disrespectful including because he took the time to edit it in.
@JoeRingo118 One could Google it, especially since it's cheap anyway. Or an element of self-awareness would have made the joke funnier instead of seeming like minimal effort.
@JoeRingo118 It seems based on this thread that to those who notice it detracted from the joke, this defeating the purpose. I'm not trying to talk about racism, I'm just saying that an extra two seconds would have made it less distracting for those who notice. Sure it's not the end of the world, but the point is there.
Not to mention the crosseyed expression for some reason grabbed my attention as the camera from the NC zooms in on Mulan. I get the feeling that the expressions in this movie almost feels like Cans Without Labels.

"Mulan will have to choose between her duty and her heart."
I genuinely thought she was the one who was going to be married off for political reasons. And she'd have this complex conflict over wanting to marry Shang and marrying a stranger to save her country. That would have been way more interesting than this mess.

The villain sat there and sang a song about how she was gonna fuck up her life and she still did it???
This got better animation (mostly) though which is just insulting
2 things that I learned from this:
"China is so dead."
"Prepare to meet Kali."
IN HELL
In history, The mongols did invaded China. So, maybe that's why the movie ended that way.
At least they got married before their inevitable murder
Watching this as a kid, the conflict between mulan, Shane, and mushu was insufferable. I actually enjoyed the guys and the princesses getting together quite a bit though.
As bad as this movie is, I still say Hunchback of Notre Dame II is the worst of the Disney sequels!
Belle's Magical world. 'nuff said
Beauty and the beast 3 is much worse
I mean, I’m not gonna say you’re wrong
In animation yes, but I will admit I enjoyed the romance in that one better than in this one
Dan Gurney I’m sure you haven’t seen Pocahontas 2
A single line in this film from the matchmaker sums up the whole thing:
*ahem*
"COME BACK WHEN YOU GET PERSONALITIES!"
@Ianvs_Maximvs fr fr they don't deserve any women and every princess always marries the wrong men
I can see why everyone hates this film.
But the animation looked decent.
compared to other Disney sequels it sure did, this and th Brother bear sequel have amazing animations for a dvd sequel
@@patax144 I'd add Lion King 1 1/2 and Tarzan 2 to that list. Those looked damn near close to identical to the first films
@@MegaAnimationFan You do mean the animation as well, right?
@@thefantasticretroreviewer3941 That's what I said, the films LOOKED identical to the originals. Meaning they had very similar animation
Dexter The Nostalgia Toonster the animation in this movie looks good, but the style and movements of it just doesn’t fit.
I love the original movie and this movie is soo offensive.
How offensive is it?
@@thefantasticretroreviewer3941 really offensive like I recently watched on Disney + and I really hated it the only thing I like where the three princess getting with the army guys I thought that was pretty cute and I guess the animation was fine but for some reason that makes it even worst.
@@trixxartarchive7705 Okay, now I see why
@@thefantasticretroreviewer3941 yeah I didn't mean that it was like personal offensive.
@@trixxartarchive7705 So you didn't really mean its offensive, that is just another way of saying how terrible Mulan 2 is.
That kind of makes sense to me or something.
I mean this is most likely the Canonical ending because Genghis Khan kind of completely decimated china
Mulan is the best. But Mulan II, now that's a problem.
Isaac Martinez Chavez still better than pocahontas 2!
@@nicktechnubyte1184 Is it WWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYY worse?
At least the sequel isn't canon.
Nick Technubyte I actually like pochahontas 2 but I didn't like mulan 2........I didn't like that Mushu turned into a jerk in mulan 2
Yeah, even back when this came out, I didn't like it.
And now we know why the Mongols conquered China.
Mulan fans: I hope the remake never comes out.
Covid-19:I got you buddy.
If only.
Thank you for articulating why I HATED Brave when I saw it in theaters.
You know it is going to be good when the last time he reviewed this movie he blew out the mic.
Wait, he seriously did that😅😂
Grandmother (original Mulan): take a cricket just for luck and even you can’t blow it
Mulan II: *wanna bet?*
Fun fact: when critic said that Mulan 2 was doing the same plot as brave, I looked it up and brave came out 8 YEARS AFTER MULAN 2! Think about that brave fans!
At least brave made up for it's lack of action with a really powerful emotional arc that honestly inspired me to get back in touch with family members I had cut out of my own life.
@@jarongreen5480 not to mention Brave looked amazing (except for Merida’s face. I’d have liked it if they made her look a little more fierce. Just a little)! Those environments looked beautiful! It almost makes me want to go visit Scotland one day!
@@jarongreen5480 plus the humor.
Well I guess he should say “Disney your just eight years away, eight years away…”
@@KingCasual1986 I think Merida had the perfect face. Youthful but still rebellious. The face of someone who breaks the rules. Besides her mother covered that fierceness in her face.
"There's no way the live-action version can be worse than this".
Nope, just probably more bland.
Which would you rather drink? Flavorless water or a blended drink of the most painful hot peppers?
Well from what I can tell they will be focusing on the action, so this is the one remake that I might give a chance. Definitely not lady and the tramp remake
The one in the role of Mulan supports the police in Hong Kong...
AndreNitro X1000 you mean focusing on the true story of Mulan.
@@klimmr At least I can look back at the hot pepper drink and joke about how stupid l was.
Mulan II, DISHONOR on YOU, DISHONOR on your family, DISHONOR on your COW 🐄, DISHONOR!!!!
I wouldn't mind seeing a Doc Brown and Marty cooking show.
it'd be Doc doing all the over-complicated work with onions and a kitchen sink turned into a microwave and Marty being all confused about every single step.
As long as it's like Hell's Kitchen. I'd watch it.
Sounds heavy...
Right? I'm down for watching Doc and Marty on a cooking show 😁🍿
@@chrissonofpear1384 Weights got nothing to do with it
