From what I can gather it's the guy coming to terms with his childhood trauma. After he had escaped his kidnapping, he couldn't even look at the neighbour's house without getting night terrors or feeling extremely anxious. And when the family eventually moved away, instead of conquering that fear, he buried it in his memories in hopes of supressing it. Years go by and now he's an adult. Judging by the letter, he's being evicted (or maybe it was an advertisement for the house, I don't know) and decides he should move. But unbeknownst to him, said house is his old home opposite the neighbour's. Once he realises this, he becomes understandably frightened (see cutscene when he approaches the ruins of the neighbour's house) and tries to sleep it off, hoping to once again repress the fear. He starts having a nightmare about the neighbour and the house he had been trapped in. He's reluctant and afraid, but still carries on trying to discover what's in the basement. As the dream goes on, he starts becoming braver and less scared towards the neighbour. And in the final confrontation, decides to put an end to the terror that's haunted him for so long - The Neighbour. He soon wakes up, feeling refreshed and lighter than he's ever been. He looks out of his window, now no longer afraid of the history he had with it. Though the neighbour will forever live in his memories, he'll live as an after thought. After years and years of nightmares and trauma, he can finally put it behind him and start a fresh new life. With this, he greets his new neighbours and starts moving boxes into his home.
This is just what I got out of it. Pretty solid, but I wish it was longer

Every subsequent build of this game has become more and more abstract and more and more buggy.

To be honest, I don't know what on earth happened, I remember seeing this when it was announced and being NORMAL, neighbor was hiding something in the basement and you needed to find out. now you have all these weird..shit going on, breaking existence and making no sense at all. WHAT ON EARTH HAPPENED TO THIS GAME!?

Tiny Build, the company that made this game, is probably more focused on Yandere Simulator, since it's more popular than Hello Neighbor, and the creators just let this go to shit thinking that they can make more money off of Yandere Simulator than Hello Neighbor. That's just a theory though, a game- ...I'm sorry.

Dynamic Pixels made Hello Neighbor, apparently with some help from tinyBuild, the publishers, although I don't know how involved they were. Meanwhile, Yandere Simulator is being made by one dude with some help from random people every now and then, and tinyBuild are only publishing it with no involvement beyond that, at least that I know of.
All the hype about this game, all those alphas, all those mysteries and theories and hidden messages and the way they just ended the is a slap in the face. 😤

The ending leads to more theories and mysteries,what happened to the neighbor? Why was the house torn down? And don't forget about (in my opinion) his missing son and daughter? We need a sequal.

yes if you look you can see the shadow man appear before him when he enters the burned down neighbor's house i think the shadow man is the one behind it all or the shadow man is a representation of his past fears coming to haunt him and he conquers them
Oh my god please don't tell me it's another one of those "It's not real" plots.
And all it took was a year and a half of development hell to get the game finally published.

They sure added a lot to the game. hard to tell whats going on story wise. The layout of the house seems crazier. Cant wait to see the full playthrough to put together the story. Nothing like saying hello neighbor even in your dreams

Ahmad Syauqi nice thought. I dont think this is the case here, but I think that plays into the imagery. I think it's more like the Lovely Bones where the main character is reliving their death (in this case, capture). Piecing it together with the audience allows both, us and the character to know the story at the same time, therefore bringing peace. It seems they took the story to a deeper, darker place like both of us picked up on, but i feel like they scaled back.
For example, What was behind the master door? What did he do with the kids? What was that mildly aggressive grunt the neighbor was making the whole time? Why did they choose to slow down that grunt in the "boss fight?" There was a lot of meaning behind the imagery here, but it was all disproven in the cut scenes. Damn shame.
I would’ve loved it if it was simply just a creepy neighbor with bad intentions. Plain and simple. All of this dream nonsense and the messy house makes it less scary and harder to take seriously.
You can't make a phycological horror game without some twists/mindfucks.
@joseph lastname Except you can. Maybe all the great psychological horrors have twists and mindfucks, but at the core of the genre it's simply not neccessary, and if you don't know what you're doing then it just feels confusing and tacked on.

Jack Overland Frost People just overhyped this game. If it wouldn't have been so expected, it would've seemed better.
A game that started out as a simple and endearing concept, that's since become so convoluted and weird, I don't even know what to think of it anymore.
Woulda been awesome if the suitcase at the end was slammed shut by the neighbor's hand as a sorta "screw you I'm not gone" kinda ending. Would have been way more satisfying than the cliche "oh lmao it was a dream rip" thing

So.. Umm.. He just a dream?
To me this feels like it has a lot to do with internalizing childhood trauma. The childhood act is his warped memory of the events; he knew that he witnessed something, but the figure of the victim stayed shadowy and empty because he didn't know what they looked like. He only knew that they needed help and he couldn't do anything about it, and was in turn victimized for even trying. The house and fence was impossibly huge and confusing and full of traps because that's how his psyche chooses to deal with what happened- "Of course I couldn't escape sooner! The house was impossible to escape from! But I braved it and made it out alive anyway!"
In the dream, the victim and the neighbor both loomed over him in the dream as huge, insurmountable obstacles as the sources of his guilt and his fear, and the tasks that he had to complete were even more daunting. That he woke up from it and carried on like it was nothing could indicate that this is something he revisits often, and is used to brushing it off as nothing.

This makes me think of that stories untold business. Except this time the premise doesn't make up for the ending.
Progressively getting harder the more you die is a good mechanic but eh.

i disagree yea we got a lot of seqeuels but at least we got complatly story with consistant quality
I can sorta piece together some semblance of a plot, but not everything.
This left me with a lot of questions.
What is the actual story from this game, because I only have ideas and none of them are wholly consistent.
There a little flashbacks in the middle of the acts that give a glimpse of the story which I saw enough for this to make sense (like when you die 3 times in Act 1). I would probably recommend seeing Manly's full playthrough before you try to piece the story together.

i really like the very first hello neighbor...the ai is great but after that the game(games updates) is just put some secrets so youtubers use cheat and discover it put some this and that let them make theories about it.....now they release this full game...its like...hmmmm...not hating...just saying it...

This goes through every update
So it's finally here... I will refrain from forming a complete opinion on the game until I get to see your playthrough in its full, but I will say that right now I'm a tad worried that the game still looks worse than the original alpha. Perhaps seeing it with more context will dissuade those feelings.

It never really seemed clear as to what you were supposed to be doing. Like the devs were going for a certain feel of the game during the first alpha/beta or whatever, now it seems they got too ambitious and couldn't finish the game.

Basically your character is the neighbors son, and in the final scene you play as the neighbor protecting a younger version of you from the demon(shadow monster thing). The reason why you get bigger in the final scene is that it shows the neighbor getting stronger and bigger every time he fights the demon. In the end he defeats the demon and locks it in his basement which is why he guards it so heavily. When he abducts you, he does not actually harm you and just wants to get you out of the house and away from the demon

From what I understood. The dude had a trauma with his neighbour when he was a child. He returns to his old house, falls asleep, and has a nightmare related to all that trauma. So yeah... pretty disappointing
I was hoping the creature or whatever would be some paranormal force forcing the neighbor to kidnap and kill for some reason or another... so yeah, sucks it's another "all a dream" cliché

One thing I noticed about this 'horrible language' is that one letter swaps with another letter. Like the "SIMMING" posters in which the M and the S swapped.

TinyBuild definitely improved as far as story, but it's not very lengthy and lacks a OST.

This story is clearly a reality within a reality, the neighbour is using some kind of supernatural power to keep himself from facing his end of some kind of faust like deal. However you foil it by collapsing the reality he creating to cheat the consequences of his deal thus trapping both him and that demon in a purgatory. While you wake up into your own reality.

Wait. So, what was in that door with four locks? Or was there no way of knowing? Was that it? If it was it could have gone to a really dark place, which I think they went to but scaled back. The fear of being murder would put you into fight or flight and being so small would make the adult seem giant. I dunno. I've never hears about this game, but they did a nice job. It was Toy Story meets Lovely Bones
