"Canadian Treasure" to say the least.. the Hip are revered by many of my generation up here. They wrote about Canadian content so didnt get the respect they deserved south of the border . I like to think they were our house band.

Opening line, " He said I'm fabulously rich" In concerts in Canada the crowd would sing "He said I'm Tragically Hip" goosebumps just thinking about that! As well as "that night in Toronto" seeing them sing that in Toronto...memories!

Poets, Ahead by a Century, Fiddler's Green, At the Hundredth Meridian, Little Bones, Fireworks, Twist My Arm, Bobcaygeon, In a World Possessed by the Human Mind, but Nautical Disaster is my the best song off Day for Night but they're all great -there are so many great Tragically Hip songs - just a great group

You never saw someone control the pit until you saw this band. Gordie kept the anticipation at a fever pitch until he was absolutely ready and the whole concert would just lose their minds. They opened with this for a reason and it was glorious.

Cheers from Canada. It's difficult for people to understand how popular and revered the band is here. Their music is woven into the fabric of our culture and is the soundtrack to many of our lives. Glad to see someone made the request , and happy to see the band get some exposure.

If you guys haven't done so yet you should check out some of the videos that came out of the band's final tour. Gord Downie was such a wholesome guy that he was loved by our entire country, and when he got brain cancer (and eventually sucumbed to it) the whole country felt the loss. Their final performance of this song is such a powerful thing to see and hear.

Interesting to hear BNL talk about trying to make it in the US . They said ‘ might as well write “Bare Naked Ladies” on $20 bills and throw them out the window’ to promote themselves at first because there’s so much competition. TH were Canadian to the soul and happy enough with that . Probably a big reason they were adored by everyone of a certain age group in Canada

@@ReactionsToTheClassics If you want a handle on Gord Downie and The Hip, you need to know about Gord's final solo project. This was The Secret Path. It consists of an album of songs, a graphic novel written by Gord and illustrated by renowned comix artist Jeff Lemire, an animated television film, and a package of instructional materials. It tells the story of Chanie Wenjack, a twelve-year-old Anishinaabe boy who ran away from a residential school in 1966 and attempted to walk 370 miles to his home in Ogoki Post, a First Nations village that is normally reachable only by bush plane. He died of hunger and exposure. Gord worked closely with the boy's surviving grown-up sisters. The Hip had previously performed in remote (and clearly unprofitable) First Nations communities and worked with musicians there [see the song "Goodnight Attawapiskat"]. These are places I know well, and I can assure you that Canada's First Nations have overwhelming love and respect for The Hip. The Secret Path had a tremendous impact, which has become even more powerful after the recent discovery of the unmarked graves of children at sites of abandoned residential schools, places where Catholic, Anglican, Presbyterian and other churches attempted to crush aboriginal children's spirits and "beat the Indian out of them" ---- with a blind eye and financing from the government. It is now used as a teaching tool in grade schools across the country. The next generation in Canada will grow up knowing all about little Chanie Wenjack, and this alone is enough to earn Gord Downie's place in our hearts.

In fall of 1999 I wrote an alternate version of this song, about playing Monopoly:
    "Park Place, Too"
    I said I'm fabulously rich/
    Cuz I just passed GO!/
    I am the Battleship /
    Call me Monopoly Joe/
    With all my properties /
I am the king of the board /
    You're totally broke /
    If you land on Ventnor/
    Chorus:
    I own the railroads /
    States Avenue /
I got red hotels on Boardwalk/
    And Park Place, Too
The secret rules of the game /
    Are hard to enforce /
    The acquisition of Baltic /
Is just a matter of course /
    But I can roll a 3 /
    Land on Community Chest /
What does your Chance card show, dear? /
    I won a beauty contest/
    Chorus:
    I own the railroads /
    Pacific Avenue /
I got red hotels on Boardwalk/
    And Park Place, Too
I sang it at a Keg Party in Kingston (home of the hip). Reviews were mixed.

So, the day after the drums were recorded for this song I was hanging out with Johnny the Drummer and Dan Ackyroid in New Orleans watching Aerosmith play old blues stuff during Mardi Gras of 1995. The band was busy in the studio with the drum tracks Johnny had completed, so Johnny was allow out to play. He is from the same small city as Ackyroid. I had met him in 1988 when my friends band opened for them and when I bumped into him in Jackson Square he remembered me and asked if I wanted to go see Aerosmith later that night. :)

You mentioned that he sounds pained. Check out a few of the videos from The Hip’s final tour when they play Grace, Too. Especially the final concert (when Gord D loses emotional control and bawls unabashedly). For those who have relatives who battled Cancer or battled it themselves, the emotionality can be especially painful to watch.

If you're working through the Hip catalog you may have an interest in how deeply he affected Canadians. Should finish off with their last concert in his hometown before Gord passed away, knowing full well it would be his last. It was basically a love letter to Canadians and all the fans that made his career. Maybe Trudeau's press conference about his death too.

I've been missing in action as it's been a tough period, as i'm sure it has for many - anyway thx for a great review as per usual - to add a little bit, as is my nature:
The lyrics from "Grace, Too" may have been inspired by the plot from one of the pioneering and most celebrated films of the "noir" genre: 1944's Double Indemnity. "Film-Noir," or "black film," itself refers to the French style of film making that heavily influenced Hollywood after World War II. Having been made on the cheap in post-war France, (Causing the films to be literally dark and cast in shadows) the genre specialized in gritty, pessimistic, often crime centered stories.
Gord Downie studied film at Queens University. In fact, the title "Day For Night" is taken from a Francois Truffaut film of the same name. As you can read in other entries, "Day For Night" and other albums make reference to terms used in French (and now Hollywood) film making such as "cinema-a-clef," "tableaux vivant" and the eccentric 1926 French film-noir classic "metropolis."
In the Day For Night's lyric booklet, certain words are highlighted in bold throughout. Here's what they say when put together: Metropolis noir, take a look at this photograph, book, make me feel. Insanity, move through night, bemused, winter in the dark. I'm helpless with space. We're no longer relevant, emergency. If there's glory in miracles, it's that they're reversible.

Another Canadian band that's worth a listen to, is Rush. Three superbly talented musicians painting soundcapes. Tom Sawyer, YYZ-live in Rio, and Spirit of the Radio for starters.
Both bands are Canadian, been together for decades, seamless performers, they craft nuanced lyrical commentaries, and both have lost band members to the same type of brain cancer - Gord of The Tragically Hip, and Neil Peart of Rush. Two musicians sorely missed.

It would mean the world if you guys could do a reaction video to watching "The Stranger" from Gord Downie's (The Tragically Hip lead singer) solo album just before he passed "Secret Path".
It's an important story that Gord wanted to share; and that I feel we, as Canadians, should share to help keep ourselves accountable.
