Wow! I really enjoyed your review. Lots of thoughtful comments on the music and lyrics. I appreciated how thoroughly you dove into the background of each song. The songs resonate so much more once you learn the meanings behind the songs.
I literally have 2 world records as I solo hiked to all three of Canada’s oceans 21,000km on the worlds longest trail. I’ll tell you I felt like I was walking a hip song especially when I crossed the hundredth meridian.
The Hip have several amazing albums but Fully is my favourite. At the 100th Meridian needs to be viewed in concert to get a true perspective of how much we love the track. Gord and the band gets behind it and rock. I can listen to this album over and over again. I would also recommend Day For Night as well as Trouble At The Henhouse for Hip albums. Saw them in concert 50 times including their final show in Kingston and love these guys
50 mission cap.....as a Leaf fan.....this one means a lot to me.....been on the planet for 50 years and still waiting for my cup. Great review guys....they are Canadian Icons....probably only behind Rush in terms of popularity.
As a habs fan, but from Bill's neck of the woods, I really love tgus song. Stay safe buddy. I can't wait for the day our team's rivarly is the nost important thing.
Maybe now that Canada is one of the cool kids on the international scene, more people outside of Canada will discover and appreciate them and their Canadiana-rich lyrics.
look at this later super job. nice review from what I could see.. did a little skim going to watch the whole whole thing later.. I first became aware of them when I used to truck up to Canada back in the early 90s they were in establish band coming on for almost 10 years and I heard the hundredth Meridian which was an amazing song...and then I became a fan kinda lost track of them for a few years there about maybe seven or eight then got back into him again right about the time gourd announced his cancer to the world and you can still see that on UA-cam I believe his last performance.. that it was just a matter of time sadly til cancer battle was lost..many people love discovered the th through the years and it's really cool to see when people out of the blue start finding out about them especially those that are not Canadian... btw more than once Through The Years many have referenced TH as the Canadian REM
I saw The Hip more times that I can remember. In 2015 they toured, doing the Fully Completely album from start to finish (or fully, completely if you will) live. I went to the February 10, 2015 show. I had grown so used to seeing them live. I wish I had known that was the last time.
Great review! So happy that you guys reviewed the hip. Hopefully you'll do a few more from these legends. Also wondering if you have enjoyed their live material. They were an epic live act. Keep up with the great reviews.
I first became aware of the group from the Documentary 'Long Time Running' about the final concert of the band. Loved the video on possibly my favourite album of theirs. Ahead By a Century is my favourite song of theirs but I also adore Courage and Wheat Kings from this one. Great video as always guys
One of my favourite albums for over 25 years now. Just incredible. Day For Night is maybe their masterpiece though. Not as "immediate" as Fully Completely but super emotional and textured. BTW some fans think Eldorado is about Alcoholics Anonymous. They have so many great albums- Phantom Power, Trouble at the Henhouse, and Music @ Work are really underrated. In Violet Light is really good too.
Thank you for reviewing the hip, the band and Gord Downie are absolute legends in Canada, there is really no comparison for an American artist. If you havent, I'd reccomend watching the hips last show in Kingston. The CBC aired it live commercial free, and its estimated over 1/3rd of Canadas population tuned in live.
thx again and as i keep repeating, great review. This isn't my favourite Hip album (maybe top 5) but i thought it might be more accessible to audiences outside Canada. A number of great songs - my favs are At The Hundredth Meridian, Wheat Kings...errr, i think i'm about to list most of the tracks....anyway i'll add another Hip album down the road - hope all are healthy, keeping safe and able to pay bills - i worry for so many from an economic and mental health perspective beyond the physical illness side. difficult times indeed.
It was our pleasure and very enjoyable. Take care of yourself BMac I know it has been a challenging few weeks and we share the same worries you do. Stay safe my friend!
Although the first 4 albums are all great ...these guys really are more of a live band. I saw them 14 times starting in 1988. I would say road apples is the best album imo but this one is close.
I'm so glad you reviewed this album and band. I love all their stuff but Road Apples and Up to Here for the early TH and Phantom Power and Trouble at the Henhouse for their middle period - all are great.
I would like to suggest as a whole album reaction: Gord Downie's The Secret Path 💖🇨🇦 Also his last solo album before he passed Introduce Yourself. So beautiful! 🤩
haha thanks Jason we appreciate that. As you saw we didn't know anything about the HIp going into this and they have been a great discovery for us! Really appreciate you watching!
You guys are far more musically educated than I am. Most of the artists and albums you review are ones I have not heard of. You guys are always good at telling the stories behind the songs as you comment on each track. I always enjoy listening to the facts and your opinions. Both Trey and Shawn, you gave this a high rating of 8.0 and 8.25 respectively. Must be a very good album.
Way to do your research especially being Texans. Surprised 100th meridian didn’t grab you like it did me, always been one of my favourite songs. Such a good album, thanks for covering it!
I know! I lived in Buffalo and they were huge there. On the radio constantly and when they came to Buffalo, filled a 15,000 seat arena. A few years later, I am living in Syracuse, NY and the 3,000 seat venue is half full. I also saw them in Myrtle Beach, SC (small venue, House of Blues, maybe 1000?) and half the cars in the lot were from Ontario!
@@lewisbernstein4272 as a Canadian living in a border town it always amazed me how I would see them at a sold out full size arena in Canada one month and then have the ability to road trip through a few states the next few weeks catching them in bars and other small venues. It was a pretty amazing way to pile in as many shows as possible for a few tours.
this might be out of left field, but i think you guys should react to a rock/folklore band called les cowboys fringants from quebec in canada, especially la grande messe album. or anything by harmonium or especially offenbach, it would give you another perspective on canada too
Great review and analysis gentleman. I was in High School in Toronto when this album came out and it was everything to me. The album previous to this was Road Apples which was fantastic as well. So many great songs on that record, The Tragically Hip was the soundtrack to every camping trip or cottage weekend benders, But if you are interested I recommend a listen to Road Apples and then the album Day For Night, produced by Daniel Lanois and in my opinion their best album. Thanks for this, it helped pass the time in quarantine. Music is the cure for many ills. Stay safe, all the best.
I have heard of the Tragically Hip but have never actually heard anything by them. I listened to about half the album in preparation and, yeah, I didn't like it at all. The thing is, I'm reasonably sure that this is entirely to do with me and not the band themselves. Despite the fact that I was a teenager in the 1990s, I've always had a severe aversion to '90s alternative rock and grunge. In fact, considering just how much I love music from the '60s through the '80s (and a fair amount from before that too), it's amazing just how little '90s music really works for me. I don't know if it's just that I find the production particularly sterile or that the rock-based music of the time had lost almost all of its "roll" (Keith Richards is so right!) but aside for some very fine albums by artists of decades past (Neil Young, Macca, the Stones, Dylan, Cash) and the odd notable exception like Radiohead's The Bends and OK Computer and much of Ween's output, the only '90s stuff that I find myself coming back to at all is Britpop. I'm of the undeniably unpopular belief that grunge didn't save rock and roll, so much as did all it could to kill it by leeching out all of the joy, lightness and, well, "blackness" that was so central to rock and roll in the first place. And the less said about the utterly rubbish pop-punk "revival" of the '90s/ early 2000s, the better. I mean, sure, I could probably think of more exceptions to my dislike of '90s music (REM had some very good stuff in the '90s, for a start) but, yeah, however much I can admire the talents of people/bands like Nirvana or Nine Inch Nails and however much the pop music I sneered at at the time now sounds like Beethoven in comparison to current pop music, my appreciation for the '90s has never grown in the way that my appreciation for the '80s or '50s very much has. All that said, nice review as always. It certainly helps me gain a greater appreciation for why people like this stuff so much. I still don't like it, though.
Interesting. Personally I love this album and I love 90's rock. However, I do think that the Tragically Hip made themselves sound more "alternative" for this album. There is a chance that you would enjoy the more blues-tinged sound of their two previous albums - Up To Here and Road Apples
Nice take guys, like some of the other commenters this is also my favourite Hip album. Hundredth Meridian and Fifty Mission Cap, but back to front this is all killer no filler.
This should be in every music fan's album collection.
Agreed! Thanks for watching Joseph!
Wow! I really enjoyed your review. Lots of thoughtful comments on the music and lyrics. I appreciated how thoroughly you dove into the background of each song. The songs resonate so much more once you learn the meanings behind the songs.

So glad you guys found the Hip. They are the official soundtrack of my life.

They are my favorite band seen them 4 times Gord Downy was a awesome entertainer and the band. First band that I play when I'm listening to music
They are so so good! Thanks for watching!
Since you’re checking out Canadian treasures, check out blue rodeo.
Actually have an album review and triple shot song reaction up of them, really enjoy them.
Fully completely by the hip is 9.9/10. This is a true classic
haha I have ranked 5 albums EVER as 10/10. As you saw we gave this a really high rating. Really good album!
Up to Here, another great album
Really appreciate the suggestion and thanks for watching Ska Sc!
It's a 10/10 but anyway....check out some live versions. Highway girl double suicide version. New Orleans is sinking killer whale tank version...
haha I have given out 5 10's EVER. A really good album though as you saw from our review. Thanks

Can you do Road Apples?? or Trouble at the Henhouse? they are so good - any Tragically Hip album
We will check it out. Thanks!
Best band ever when their entire catalogue is spun a few times...
High praise but I know many believe that!

Thanks Ken appreciate the kind words and you watching. Stay safe!
The fact they didn't take off in the US has always baffled me
