    Im planning to do this as well. Wish there was a completel list of part numbers for this modification. Tama's website doesnt show photos so I have no idea what's actually needed.

      I did a Google search of the Tama rims and found the part numbers. When I gave those to my local drum shop, he found them in his catalogs. Yes, he still uses catalogs.

    I've been struggling with this for decades. I absolutely hate having two floors, because I don't like have ANYthing "behind" me. Everything I hit needs to be infront of me, even if just by a degree or two, including the hi-hat So, whatever floor I'm using will be parallel (or very close to it) with my snare, and the same height. And, like you I'm built in a way that my snare is high than most, so my stick and arm are perfectly aligned in a straight line when doing a rim shot on the snare. But, positioning has been a nightmare. And, I'm working with a custom kit with a 12ply birch shell, on top of it. So, I'll definitely need two points of support. I just always struggled with my option for the 2nd point of support on the floor. I even thought about adding a second rack bar on the bottom that would use an arm to mount in where one of the floor tom legs is, then, then either a RIMS Alloy, or Star mounting system (which I love, but are very expensive) for the batter side. I've solved my hi-hat problems with a Remote hi-hat (3ft) cable, now if I could just solve my "mounted floor toms" issue I'll be set. This was helpful....thank you for sharing!

      I know what you mean. My biggest floor tom isn't quite in a comfortable spot. It's just a tad bit behind the line where I'd like it to be. I have been contemplating moving it over to the left side the entire time I've had this set. It would help me with some other things I want to be able to do with my left hand too. I'm just having a hard time breaking from tradition on that. Just saw Dave Weckl at a clinic a couple weeks ago. He got me to thinking about it a little stronger again. Might have to make it happen.

      @@basementdrumlab Yeah…I’m having a custom kit made, and I’m contemplating going back to 10, 12, 13, 16 sizes, but having a deeper 13” Tom, that’s still mountable but with a deeper tone. Those traditional sizes sound better, more balanced to my ears. Btw...I tried having my 14” floor on the left side, and I wound up never actually using it. I remember really loving being able to move my 16 over to where I could reach it. The only time I hit it was doing solo type stuff (in which case it was actually very cool/creative). But, from a fundamental playing perspective, I didn’t use it at all. If only one of these manufacturers would come out with a 13” tom that sounds like a 16”. Then all out problems would be solved! I finally solved my hi-hat problems (albeit for $550). So, I’m holding out hope that some genius will invent that some day (for God knows how much money….).

    Gibraltar rack?

    Nice you know perhaps you could do a drum kit tour and also do some drum covers like other drummers do

      I’m getting there. That’s the end game. The build out is taking way longer than it should because my life schedule has me slammed right now. Plus, I’m still contemplating replacing all of these heads. I’m just not happy with them. But, some playing videos are coming. Thank you for being patient with me.

    You used a Gibraltar rack system. Was there a reason you didnt buy the Tama? Just curious because I plan on this upgrade as well.

      I had a Tama Rack in the early 90s and loved it. When I went to build this set, I just didn't feel like Tama had advanced as well as Gibraltar. It felt like the Tame hard ware of the 90s hadn't really advanced that much. It just seemed like Gibraltar had a lot more options and versatility.

    B-E-A utifil kit! I purchased a used Rockstar kit last week. The 14x14 tom had a broken rubber ball that wouldnt keep the tom flat. Purchased a gibraltee L rod and the damn tom is too heavy. Didnt even hold. I ended up putting it on a snare stand. I’m convinced those L rods cant hold the weight. 😅 Maybe its the ball material. Frustrating! Love your kit once again! 🍻🍻🍻

      14s are that weird size where they are almost too big to rack and too small to make in to a floor tom. On my last set that I bought used, the guy who had it before me made a floor tom out of the 14”. It worked but always looked a little different.

    I mounted my floor toms by their two back leg mounts on my rack, it was a real pain in the arse to get everything aligned just right, but they're real secure, and not going anywhere. Plus, that way you don't have to bring the bar they're attached to up as high. My fear with mounting toms 14", and up by just a single L-rod is putting all that weight on ONE surface. Seems very sketch to me, I'd be afraid it'd eventually fall, or start to sag.

    • @basementdrumlab

      I mounted my floor toms on my last Tama set by one of the leg mounts. Just flipped the tom over.
      The thing I like about the StarCast mount is that the weight is on the rim.

      If you have time, go back and look at how his floor toms are mounted to his Gibraltar rack with the L-arm. The L-arm he used was mounted directly to a heavy duty rack clamp awith memory lock. He didnt use the typical ball/socket type tom arm generally sold by Tama and other brands. Trust me, the system he used is ultra solid. Impossible to break unless an ape plays it and I'm still pretty confident on this.

    It looks like you’re using a Gibraltar rack. How the heck do you get floor toms to hang on the rack without twisting down when you play on them? How do they support all that weight if you crank those clamps down they dent your tubing

    • @basementdrumlab
      @basementdrumlab  10 місяців тому

      Amazingly enough, it doesn’t dent the tubes. I have them cranked but not as hard as you’d think. They aren’t as heavy as some floor toms I’ve felt.

    • @codersexpo1580
      @codersexpo1580 10 місяців тому +1

      Yah I ended up getting a couple Gibraltar SC-GCML 1.5 drum rack memory locks. One on each side of the mounting clamp. This helps a great deal and allows me to tighten at a reasonable amount to avoid denting the rack bar.

    • @basementdrumlab
      @basementdrumlab  10 місяців тому

      @@codersexpo1580 That’s a smart idea. I might have to copy that and put additional memory clamps on the other side of the main clamps.

    Doesn't mounting toms by the hoops detune them?
